Strong Contenders in La Academia California is the most heavily represented in the show, with Carmen from San Francisco, as well as Mariana and Frank from Los Angeles. Other U.S.-based contestants include Ronald from Miami, Gustavo from Chicago and Noé from Houston. We wish them the best as they compete against some of the finest talent in Mexico. We also have some great coverage updates as Comcast carriage was added to our stations in New York and Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Phoenix is also boasting new coverage with DISH Network. Our Names & Faces section features Senior VP/Director of Network Sales, Angélica Bengolea, who has been an important part of Bob Turner’s sales team for the past five years. Saludos, Martin Breidsprecher • CEO La Toya Jackson Presides La Academia Tribute Concert to her Late Brother Michael Concert three of La Academia was presided by La Toya Jackson, older sister of the late Michael Jackson. The concert featured a special medley number performed by contestants that included Jackson’s hits Billy Jean, Thriller and Beat it. Special guests for the next concert include the music sensation Franco De Vita, boxing champs Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Márquez, as well as Lynda Carter. From an initial 35 contestants, the field has narrowed to 25, as students give it their all to be the next La Academia finalists. Her husband initially supported her participation in the show. However, as he cares for his stepdaughter, the dynamics are often difficult. At one point, he asked Carmen to drop everything and return to San Francisco. Carmen’s talent and mettle will be tested in coming weeks. Frank A fan of Luis Miguel, Julieta Venegas and José José, Frank grew up between U.S. and Mexican cultures in Tijuana and Los Angeles. He is currently studying economics, but has music in his blood. Mariana She has dedicated her life to performance since age three. She is a graduate of the Orange County High School of the Arts. Gustavo He left everything in the United States to fight for his dream on La Academia 2011. His goal is to succeed and ultimately bring his wife and his three children to Mexico so they can meet his parents. He admires Pedro Infante and Javier Solis. Noe At just 18, Noe is the father of two children and determined to compete for his family as best he can. Ronald Born in Venezuela, Ronald auditioned for the La Academia in his adopted city of Miami. Many have commented on his striking resemblance to the Puerto Rican pop star star Chayanne. AzA Gazette The Azteca America Newsletter 4 Azteca America Gets Comcast Carriage in New York and Philadelphia Congratulations to our New York and Philadelphia stations for the addition of Comcast carriage. Our New York WMBC channel 63.6 is operated by the Azteca Station Group. It is also carried on Cablevision 232, DirecTV 40 , Dish 39 and Verizon Fios 461. The Comcast position is channel 286. Our Philadelphia affiliate W36DO channel 36.3, operated by Una Vez Mas, is carried on DirecTV 33. The Comcast positions are channels 268 and 568, with the signal included in Comcast’s digital, limited basic and Latino packages. “This is positive news for our stations as well as for our network as a whole,” said Azteca America CEO Martin Breidsprecher. “We look forward to sharing continued coverage advances in coming months.” Cruz Azul With Strong FLM Soccer Results After Week 7 As the current soccer season approached its midpoint, Cruz Azul was two points behind overall league leader Guadalajara. The “maquina,” as Cruz Azul is affectionately called by fans, had four wins two ties and a single loss as of week seven. Jaguares was tied with Pumas for fifth place with eleven points, and Puebla finished the week with nine points. Newcomer Xolos of Tijuana is holding strong and actually slightly ahead of last season’s runner-up, Monarcas Morelia. Nevertheless, the season is still young, with a total of 17 weeks of regular season play before the liguilla post-season playoffs, which are scheduled to begin in the first week of November in route to the final championship during the first week of December. AzA Gazette 5 The Azteca America Newsletter Road to La Academia 2011: The Castings With a four-month-long casting call that concluded in Mexico City last month, more than 420,000 young US Latino musicians and singers had participated in the preparation of Spanish-language TV’s most popular musical reality show: La Academia. Azteca America began castings in June in Atlanta, with firstgeneration finalist and La Academia icon Yahir, who lent some of his musical know-how while also mingling with fans. Castings continued in July in Oklahoma City, Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago, La Vegas, Phoenix, Houston, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Guest judges included Cynthia Rodriguez, Chacho Gaitán, Víctor García, Aline Hernández, Paolo Ragonne, Edu and Juan Barragan as well as members of the La Academia production team, who selected the Azteca America representatives that continued with strong showings at the time of publishing. Angélica Bengolea After a second stint at Univision, she realized it was time to head to Azteca America. Senior VP/Director of Network Sales Azteca America Network An integral part of the Azteca America sales team since 2006, Angélica oversees network sales for the network, with teams in New York in Miami. “What I enjoy most about Azteca America is the challenge,” she days. “We’re still the feisty upstart that is proving itself every day to clients and agencies to be a great advertising investment.” Angélica has over 20 years of experience in media sales. She began her career in Univision as a network account executive and later went to general market network radio (ABC Radio Networks). She also opened an in-house Spot Radio rep office in New York for Liberman Broadcasting and later moved on to Spot When not sealing deals for the network, she enjoys being with her family and playing tennis. AzA Gazette The Azteca America Newsletter 6 Station Spotlight Dallas • KAZD channel 55 Dish, DirecTV and ATT&T U-verse 55; Verizon Fios channel 3, Time Warner 19, Charter 18 Luis F. Hernández, VP and General Manager Although the Una Vez Mas station group has been headquartered in Dallas since 2002, it took a great leap at the end of last year when it migrated its signal to full-power KAZD TV 55 With a 1000 KW transmitter located on a 500 meter antenna, the Una Vez Mas flagship station sends out a strong over-the-air digital signal to the complete Dallas-Ft. Worth DMA, which ranks fifth in the nation in both Spanish-language and general market viewers. Overthe-air signals are especially important in Dallas, where almost 40% of Spanish-language viewers watch free TV. “It’s been exciting, and it puts us on a plane with our Spanish-language peers,” says Luis. The station launch was accompanied with a strong marketing campaign on radio, outdoor and print media leading to February sweeps, with a second stage prior to May sweeps. KAZD builds its audience from the early morning with the live feed of the Azteca Noreste morning news from 6 to 8 am. The programming has resonated strongly with the mostly Mexican Hispanic population in the community. However, the strongest programming draw has been live FLM soccer with a strong uptick in viewership following the station migration. To bolster existing network sports programming such as DeporTV, Deporte Caliente and Antesala Deportiva, KAZD has launched the only locally-produced Spanish-language sports program in Dallas, Marcador Azteca. In addition to giving local flavor of national and international sports news, Marcador Azteca covers the dynamic local soccer scene in Dallas, which includes over 18 leagues that field about 500 teams. Although Luis says the station is still young, with eight months on the air, he adds that the positioning in the market is being noticed by top advertising agencies in Dallas. KAZD has also been successful as of late in attracting female audiences to daytime programming as a welcome balance to the mostly male sports audience. This summer the station has been active with the promotion of its La Academia casting, with 3,000 people in attendance to watch a concert of ten local finalists.The winner was later sent to Los Angeles to compete with national candidates. Luis and his team have been also been active in the community with the promotion of Dollar Day, a special event held at the Dallas Zoo to attract wider audiences before kids return to school, and will soon host a Texas State Fair Hispanic Heritage concert featuring La Mafia. He has also spearheaded a year-long informational campaign called Azteca Contigo, where 60-second capsules look to empower and inform the community on issues such as immigration, health, education and finances. A current campaign is sponsored by Oncor, the regional power distribution company, that focuses on tips to save energy. Phoenix Secures Dish Carriage UVM’s KPDF affiliate in Phoenix has picked up the last of its missing pay TV piece with carriage on DISH Network The channel 41 spot mirrors its over-theair position, as well as its channel position on DirecTV. The station is also carried by Cox Cable on channel 56 and Qwest on channel 16. “DISH subscribers will now have access to Azteca’s excellent sports, entertainment programming on Channel 41, as well as our recently launched local news that airs weekdays at 5:30 pm,” said KPDF GM Gaby Cardenas. “We’re always looking to improve the ways to reach viewers and serve our community.” AzA Gazette 7 The Azteca America Newsletter Contacts: EXECUTIVES: Luis J.
