HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, LEIGHTON - OLD LAWN MOWERS
In future the Church Cellar will be locked for security reasons.
At present there are two old lawn mowers in the Cellar which do not belong to the
Church. They need to be removed as soon as possible. If anyone knows who
they belong to, could they let that person know what is happening.
Any queries get in touch with the Church Wardens.

Great Timing!
This month’s issue has plenty of memories,
results and photos from a splendid day out at
the Leighton Show. Many thanks are due to all
involved in the hard work and preparation.
And what about the weather? It couldn’t have
been better. After weeks of dismal rain and
mist the day of the show was perfect September sunshine.
Absolutely brilliant planning! The Met Office could
obviously learn a thing or two from our organisers.
So many photos … spoiled for choice. We’ve fitted in
as many as possible on the next two pages. Apologies if
your entry or favourite event is not represented - no
favouritism - just decided on what may fit together well. It
would have been easy to fill the whole issue with pictures
and news from the Show.
Time Flies It’s not just us. Everyone we’ve asked could
hardly believe that the Leighton Village Hall is actually
30 years old. The hall treasurer, Tony Garrett, is organising
a commemorative issue of the news letter and an exhibition
of pictures, newspaper articles, videos, etc. about the fund
raising, building, opening ceremony and past or recent
events. Please help by sending (loaning) any memorabilia
you may have to add to the anniversary event in December.
Please see ‘Coffee Club’ page 10 and ‘Help Needed’ page 13.
The First Issue of the Leighton News was in September
1986. Only a single A4 page (double sided) but with
terrific ambitions from the outset:
‘It will be a monthly sheet …if things go well we will be
bringing out a Sunday Colour Supplement and £1million
Bingo Game if the circulation so warrants!’
We haven’t quite got to the stage of affording the bingo
game but the falling cost of technology means we may
have the next best thing for a colour supplement - see the
column opposite.
Steve
The first Leighton News produced in colour was No. 278
for October 2013. Of course the print edition still had to
be in B&W but the files used for printing could also be
put on the web site for viewing online. The print
version will always be best for reading articles, looking
up phone numbers and contact details but for all the
interesting photos and artwork we hope readers are
also enjoying the web site.
As well as viewing the pages in Acrobat we can now
offer a Flipbook version. Turn the pages by clicking,
dragging a mouse or swiping a touch screen. This is a
no cost option because it uses the same files as the
print version. Pages can be magnified and searched.
It uses the same kind
of software the
County Times
employed for paid
subscriptions - but
totally free for lucky
Leighton News
readers! It works
well on computers and tablets though smart phones
are a bit of an eye-strain.
Other possibilities inclued the pages showing video
clips or linking to another site. Online from the back
cover, click the link to to go straight to the new web site
of N J Evans our sponsor for October.
Try out Flip Book versions of the Leighton News by
going to: www.long-mountain.co.uk or scan this code
with a tablet or phone. Just click or touch
the covers for September and October to
open the issue. On tablets and phones it’s
worth trying different browsers. Let us
know how well (or not) it works for you.

After a busy Summer of bookings and
maintenance work, plans are well underway to
upgrade the toilets, maintain the floor and do
further exterior and interior maintenance in
October. The Management Committee always
welcome new ideas for improvements - contact
number as below. As the 30th Anniversary
approaches, Leighton Village Hall continues to
be one of the most used halls in the area and is
unique in that the hall and car park are owned

Village Grapevine
Bon Voyage to Brian and Jenny Webb who lived at Cwm Coedre Cottage for many years along with their
daughter Claire. Jenny and Brian have sold up and moved to the far off shores of Welshpool where we hope they
will be very happy.
................
Welcome to the couple that snapped up the house, James and Sophia. James immediately threw himself
into village life by joining the Leighton Bank team of Rob, Pete and Fred to put the Show marquee up.
................
Welcome to baby Chester Dylan Evans who arrived on the 17th September, a son for Eva and Jamie and a
little brother for Martha and Nansi. Chester arrived on the birthday of his 23 year old uncle Dylan Walton
................
Congratulations to Rob and Becky Smith on the recent christening of their little Willow Erin in Holy
Trinity Church, Leighton. Willow is the 6th grandchild of Chris and Terry Walton.
................
Welcome back to Rev Robert who is slowly easing himself back into parish life after health problems.
Nice to see you back Robert, we have missed you.
................
The whole village sends their support and great respect to Jean and John Bennett, Goppas who have
had such a tragic time of late with the loss of the lovely Izzie. We hope that you both and Mary, Paul,
Emily and Lily know that Leighton people are thinking of you all and send our love.
................
It was with sadness that the village heard of the passing of two people who spent their younger years
growing up in Leighton and who will be remembered by so many. Frank Knight who used to live in School
House recently died as did Rob Dixon who used to live at Pentre Lodge (formerly Pentre Villa). Our best
wishes go to both families.

SAVE ENERGY -- SAVE £££
FREE ENERGY APPOINTMENTS
Impartial advice in your own home or in the CA Bureau
As a part of the Energy Efficiency in Wales Project aimed at combating fuel
poverty, Powys Citizens Advice is delivering FREE Energy Best Deal Extra
appointments across Powys. These appointments give people access to
private one-to-one advice meetings on Energy Efficiency in their local area
and homes.
Are you unnecessarily wasting cash on your energy bills? It only takes 20 minutes to check, and it
could save you over £200 a year.
The Energy Best Deal Extra (EBDx) sessions are with a qualified adviser, and focus on delivering
tailored energy advice
Powys Citizens Advice Bureau energy adviser, Chris Price says, “This is an opportunity to receive
help solving problems such as ‘why are my energy bills so high?’ ‘What can I save by switching
providers?’ ‘I’ve got behind on my utility bills, what can I do?’ EBDx sessions can help you find the
best energy deals and more.”
An Energy Best Deal Extra appointment may help you with:
• Finding the best deal.
• Grants for improvement.
• Help if struggling to pay bills.
• Finding the best deal and saving money on your bills.
• Complaints or issues with suppliers.
• Help for older, low-income or disabled customers.
Knowing your rights with energy providers can be a confusing topic and Powys
Citizens Advice Bureau want to help you make sense of your choices. 92% of
EBDx clients seen in 2013/14 found their appointment helpful. One client said
“I’m saving around £150 a year on fuel bills. I could not thank the advisor
enough”. Another saved £230 a year just by switching supplier!

WE NEED YOUR HELP !!!
30th Birthday Celebrations
This is where we need your help:
Do you have pictures, news articles or memorabilia relating
to the opening of the village hall when it was built in 1985 ?
Do you have pictures of any events that took place at the
village hall over the last 30 years. ?
Please check through your old photograph albums, old shoe
boxes and any where else that you may have any information of particular
interest relating to the village hall. If required, the originals can be copied and returned.
If you can help us in this project please contact Tony Garrett on 0788 966 6906
or email [email protected]
As part of the village hall’s 30th birthday celebrations, we are looking to produce a news letter
and also a small exhibition in the village hall in December displaying pictures and news articles
of events that have taken place in and around the hall over the last 30 years.
