The 2016 Spotlight on Kenyan Music programme will aim to transcend
geographical and cultural boundaries through cross-cultural musical
encounters; composing repertoires that combine a myriad of unique Mwanate
LQVWUXPHQWVDQGUK\WKPVIURPDFURVVWKH$IULFDQFRQWLQHQW
In February 2016, in partnership with the Nile Project, the Kenyan
musicians Kasiva Mutua (percussionist) and Rapasa Nyatrapasa
(nyatiti and adung player) fused Kenyan musical traditions with
those of the Nile Basin; thus enriching their own compositions with
3DQ1LOHVRXQGV
In the second cross-cultural musical encounter, the French-Tunisian Bado
Oud maestro, Jean-Pierre Smadja (aka Smadj), will be in Nairobi to
FROODERUDWHZLWK.HQ\DQPXVLFLDQV,WZLOOUHVXOWLQDULFKPXVLFDO
mix of the sounds of the age old Middle Eastern musical instrument,
the ‘oud’, with the distinctive melodius taarab traditions of the Kenyan
FRDVWDQGWKHUK\WKPLFPZDQ]HOHEHDWVRIWKH*LULDPD

were twice runner-up in the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards for Asaph
