MINISTER of State for Foreign Affairs HE Dr Khalid bin Mohammed al Attiyah on Monday said under the fleadership of the Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, empowerment of women has become an article of faith with the establishment. Exercise of political, social and economic rights by women is guaranteed by the country’s Constitution and the laws. Attiyah was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Third Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on the Advancement of Women, which kicked off in Doha on Monday. He noted that Qatar was signatory to a number of agreements and international and regional conventions on the rights of women. At the institutional level, numerous institutions and governmental bodies were established to promote and protect women’s rights and eliminate all forms of discrimination against them, Al-Attiyah said. “Qatari women have assumed the highest positions in the state’s institutions and the private sector, including ministerial positions,” he said, adding, “they have also contributed significantly to the country’s renaissance.” “However,” Attiyah noted with concern, “despite all efforts made by the UN, governments and relevant agencies and civil society organisations in this area, women are still facing many challenges and obstacles.” He added that societal and legal discrimination between women and men was a frightening obstacle. “Women are the ones who suffer the most poverty and are more vulnerable to the negative effects of armed conflict than others,” Attiyah said, noting that the maternal mortality rate was still unacceptably high in many developing countries. Egyptian Minister of Insurance and Social Affairs and Head of NAM at the ministerial level Dr Najwa Khalil expressed her deepest thanks to Qatar for hosting the meeting, particularly for holding it at a “crucial” time, when women were looking “Qatari women have assumed the highest positions in the state’s institutions and the private sector." to play a central role in society. The Egyptian minister also praised for the efforts it put in to come up with the schedule for the meeting which, the Minister said, would enhance cooperation between the member countries. The meeting represented a good opportunity for member countries to recommit to women issues in their respective societies, she said. Director of the NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women Rafia bint Selim thanked Qatar for hosting the meeting and expressed the hope that the final document of the meeting would feature resolutions that “are in keeping with the ones made in Guatemala. More than 500 delegates from across the globe participated in the Sunday meeting. Al Attiyah was the head of the Qatari delegation whereas the Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Jaber al Thani inaugurated the meeting and called to activate the Doha Document for gender equality. The meeting approved the document and referred it to the ministers for approval. I have toured many countries in the Middle East before but I never had the opportunity to come to Qatar. I can see that people here are warm. I don’t know much about this place but I have many friends who live here with good experience,” Blunt said. The charming artiste expresses joy over meeting his Doha fans, mostly teenagers. The English singer/song- writer and former army officer has received numerous awards “The audience will be part of the show. As a band, we rely on their response. We will ensure we give them good first impression.” and accolades, including two Brit awards, two World Music awards, two MTV Video Music awards, an MTV European Music award and five Grammy nominations. The song ‘You’re Beautiful’ from his debut album ‘Back to Bedlam’ brought him to fame in 2005. Promising the audience a memorable show, Blunt said, “The audience will be part of the show. As a band, we rely on their response. We will ensure we give them good first impression.” He said he was eager to perform before an interesting mix of audience like those in Qatar. Ritz-Carlton unveils plans for expansion in Qatar RAMY SALAMA DOHA THE Ritz-Carlton hotel group has announced its plans for expansion in the country. The announcement was made at a press conference on Monday by Alex Kyriakidis, president and managing director for the Middle East and Africa of Ritz-Carlton’s parent company, Marriott International. “We are looking to expand in the near future. We are in the position of being able to stimulate tourism in Qatar, and we’re very confident about the future of the market in the Gulf area, and extremely so when it comes to Qatar,” he said. He said that Marriott International currently owns 38 hotels around the world and employs 12,000 people. “By 2015, we expect to open 90 hotels, and to employ 30,000 people worldwide. This is an annual growth rate of 25 percent. We are delighted with the performance of our hotels in Qatar, and based on the latest numbers, we’re doing better than expected,” he said. Kyriakidis noted that Qatar was seeking to position itself particularly as a hub for conferences and international meetings, as well as a cultural tourist destination.” “Qatar’s government is very much interested in hotels and in the hospitality industry in general, and this makes sense. Qatar needs to be able to host a large number of visitors in order to grow, and there is need for more hotels in the country, both in the long and short terms,” he added. Speaking at the press conference, Herve Humler, president and chief operating officer of Ritz-Carlton, said that with the construction of Qatar’s new airport, the country will be well positioned to compete with any airport around the globe. “Qatar will be a new hub in the Middle East and in the world. This is in addition to the large number of construction projects in the works, and of course Qatar’s rich Arabian culture. We are looking at different opportunities in the country, and when we have made the final arrangements, we will be making a formal announcement,” Humler said. He expressed appreciation of Qatar government for supporting the group’s hotels in the country. Bob Kharazmi, RitzCarlton’s global officer for worldwide operations said that Qatar was spending a lot of money to attract visitors to the country. “We, for our part, want to make sure that they leave Ritz-Carlton hotels carrying back great memories, and that they keep coming back,” Kharazmi said. TAMUQ’s career event tomorrow TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA AL AHLI Hospital’s orthopaedic and physiotherapy department will hold a public symposium on total knee replacement surgery on Thursday. The two-part event will feature an afternoon session from 4pm to 6pm which will include presentations, workshops, advices, and display of equipment used in total knee replacement surgeries. The evening symposium, to run from 7pm to 8pm will include lectures by orthopaedic experts at Al Ahli Hospital and testimonials from patients who have undergone the procedure. Al Ahli Hospital Medical Director Dr Abdul Azim A W Hussain will also make a presentation on the vision of the hospital to be a centre of excellence in total knee replacement. Addressing the media on Monday, Dr Emmanuel Tolessa, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Al Ahli Hospital, said, “The event will create awareness for the general public about knee replacement, what it involves, its complications, and the latest implants used internationally. We will also show the outcome of the past 20 cases we’ve done since we started performing it about a year ago.” Total knee replacement surgery, which costs about QR55, 000 at Al Ahli Hospital, is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability caused by osteoarthritis. The surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee. Tolessa also said, “The surgery takes an average of an hour and 15 minutes. Once that is done the patient just goes up for physiotherapy and in about four to five days will be fit enough to go home and start out-patient physiotherapy. Knee replacement is actually fairly Dr Emmanuel Tolessa, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Al Ahli Hospital, at a press conference, in Doha, on Friday. (MANEESH BAKSHI) good and nowadays you can access what we call minimal invasive knee replacement. You can do a minimal access rather than doing a huge incision. The benefits include early mobilisation and less pain. Speaking about his experience, Richard Forbes Robertson, a 60-year-old Western expatriate who underwent total knee replacement at Al Ahli Hospital five weeks ago, said, “I had bad knees because I used to play rugby when I was young. My knees were always sore. But then about five years ago, they started getting worse. I’ve been living in the Middle East for 18 months and I wanted to make sure that I have it done because I wanted to continue to work. Because of my knee problems, I could not stand properly so I also had a back operation before. “It was just all pain and having to take stronger drugs to kill the pain which affected my work. After the surgery on my right knee, I can feel much more relaxed. I can walk comfortably without feeling much pain because it’s getting better by the day.” WCMCQ faculty launches public health journal TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA TEXAS A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) will host its fifth annual ‘Careers for Engineers’ event at the Texas A&M Engineering Building on Wednesday. More than 45 companies and organisations are scheduled to participate in the event. Shannon McNulty, programme coordinator for continuing education and event organiser, said, “The event has more than doubled in size since its inception and welcomes participating companies from Qatar, the Gulf and beyond.” Dr Todd Kent, assistant dean for academic affairs, added that the event was particularly valuable because it gave students the opportunity to interact with industry leaders from across the region. “Careers for Engineers allows our students to highlight their accomplishments and begin the process of becoming professionals in their respective fields,” Kent said. “Texas A&M at Qatar is excited to play a role in developing the Qatar’s human capital. That role is highlighted at this event as our students and graduates show industry leaders how they can contribute to Qatar’s future development and growth,” he added. WEILL Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMCQ) faculty has partnered with an international team of leading medical and healthcare practitioners, educators, and policy planners to launch the Journal of Local and Global Health Perspectives. The Journal of Local and Global Health Perspectives is the brainchild of WCMCQ faculty members Dietrich Büsselberg and Ravinder Mamtani, who partnered with David O Carpenter of the University at Albany, New York, and Albert B Lowenfels of the New York Medical College, to form the journal’s chief editorial panel. The journal is a peerreviewed, international publication focusing on research concerning all aspects of global health practice at local levels, in addition to the implications of local health issues within the global context. Mamtani, professor of public health and associate dean for global and public health at WCMCQ, explained the importance of the journal. He said: “This is a first for the Middle East, as there is no other journal in this region sharing research and perspectives on public health (From left) Dr Ravinder Mamtani, Dr Lotfi Chouchan and Dr Dietrich Büsselberg of WCMCQ, in Doha, recently. issues with medical practitioners around the world. In creating the journal, we have brought together global leaders in clinical health, genetics and translational research, infectious diseases, toxicology, biostatistics, community and population health. “These practitioners come from regions as diverse as North America, Europe, India, Africa, and Qatar. Together they form the editorial team which is overseen by Büsselberg, Lowenfels, Carpenter and me, ensuring a broad base of scientific as well as geographic experience in public health.” Dr Büsselberg said: “As medical doctors, educators, and researchers we all stand to gain immeasurably from sharing our experiences, as well as our expertise, across borders and regions. For example, what practitioners and researchers learn about the treatment of diabetes here in the GCC has implications for treatment in the United States and vice versa. We all have valuable knowledge to share and this is why the journal has been created.” Tuesday, February 14, 2012 $GYHUWLVLQJ+RWOLQH (PDLODGYHUWLVLQJ#TDWDUWULEXQHFRP <RXҋYHKHDUGWKHEX]]QRZ0XOWL9LWDPLQ7KHUPDIROLDQWLVKHUH7KLVKRWQHZH[IROLDQW IHDWXUHVDXQLTXHWKHUPDOWHFKQRORJ\WKDWDFWLYDWHVXSRQFRQWDFWWRGULYHEHQHÀFLDO LQJUHGLHQWVIXUWKHULQWRVNLQ&OLHQWVKDYHVHHQSUHVVIRUWKLVSURGXFWDQGZDQWLW PHDQLQJ\RXQHHGWRJHWWKLVSRZHUIXOVNLQSROLVKHURQ\RXUVKHOYHV 7RJHW0XOWL9LWDPLQ7KHUPDIROLDQWDQG$*(6PDUW JLYHXVDFDOODWRUYLVLWGHUPDORJLFDFRP 4DWDU6NLQ&DUH&HQWUHVSRUWFLW\32%2;²'RKD4DWDU Tuesday, February 14, 2012 (^LSSRUV^UWOHYTHJL\[PJHSJVTWHU`PU8H[HYPZZLLRPUN MVYK`UHTPJPUKP]PK\HSZMVY[OLMVSSV^PUNWVZP[PVUZ! :HSLZ4HYRL[PUN +DYLQJ\HDUVVDOHVH[SHULHQFHLQSKDUPDFHXWLFDOVDOHV0XVWKROGD 6XSUHPH &RXQFLO RI +HDOWK /LFHQVH 3UHVHQWDEOH JRRGORRNLQJ DQG ZHOOYHUVHG 3UR¿FLHQW FRPPDQG RI (QJOLVK $UDELF+LQGL LV D SOXV 4DWDUL'ULYLQJ/LFHQVH 0;KLZPNULY \HDUV¶ H[SHULHQFH LQ UHOHYDQW ¿HOG )DPLOLDU LQ PDUNHWLQJ DQG GHVLJQLQJLQWHUQHWZHESDJHV3UR¿FLHQWLQ(QJOLVK4DWDUL'ULYLQJ License 7YVMLZZPVUHS/HPY:[`SPZ[WVZP[PVUZ Full knowledge and well experienced in latest trends of haircuts, tints, highlights, and including hair care. :RPU;OLYHWPZ[WVZP[PVUZ Full knowledge and well experienced of skin, body treatments, and technical equipment’s 7YVMLZZPVUHS4HUPJ\YPZ[7LKPJ\YPZ[WVZP[PVUZ +DYHIXOONQRZOHGJHRIKDQGDQGIHHWFDUH([SHUWLQQDLOSROLVKDSSOLFDWLRQVDQGDUWL¿FLDOQDLOV([SHULHQFHGLQJHOH[WHQVLRQVQDLODUW and French tips is a plus *HSSJLU[LY(NLU[ +DYLQJH[SHULHQFHLQWKHUHOHYDQW¿HOG$EOHWRPDNHDSSRLQWPHQWV with clients via telephone. This is unique to all Gallery One stores in each country and via the website it extends the reach of each such collection far beyond the physical boundaries of the country. Its bespoke collections and concept have made Gallery One into one of the biggest attractions for visitors to existing outlets outside Qatar. “The Daily Telegraph” has rated the Gallery One store at Dubai’s Emirates Mall as one of the top three. The concept is simple. They offer photography and graphics. These are available as large-format prints and can be customised with frames and mount options. The philosophy behind it is: make a great work easy to buy. From high-end collectable prints by big names in photography to impressive, large-size canvas, g-1 is accessible and welcoming. The ambitious brand wants to grow and reach major cities all over the world. The addi- tion of Qatar to the international network is part of Gallery One’s recently launched franchise programme in key territories, and Qatar is just the third country after the UK and Bahrain to host a Gallery One store outside the United Arab Emirates. Ibrahim al Jaidah, the franchise partner in Qatar said: “Gallery One is a genuinely intriguing concept that brings with it the opportunity to be part of a growing network as well as associate with a strong consumer and online retail brand with proven potential. When people think of us, we want them to think beyond the term ‘art gallery’. Among the highlights of the outlet at The Pearl-Qatar at the time of the launch were iconic collector’s items like a boxing glove autographed by Mohammed Ali and a track shoe with Usain Bolt’s inimitable scrawl on its side. Featured pieces such as these are expected to cycle through the outlet as soon as buyers are secured for incumbent items in the store’s showcase. Going beyond a typical art gallery, Gallery One products are priced competitively and it tries to make something available for everyone. On offer are five categories of products. The home line is the backbone of all g-1 outlets and features everything from art boxes to limited and unlimited photographic prints from a growing range of collections. These are available as large mixed-media framed and unframed canvas, all priced to suit the pockets of a broad range of consumers. One of the most interesting features is the ‘Signed By’ section of the outlet which has photographic print memorabilia signed by the subjects. Sourced through reputable dealers, the autographed prints are fully authenticated and come with a comprehensive guarantee. The fifth product line, appropriately named Etcetera, is a high-quality range of novelty goods ranging from flick books, postcards, lomographs, note cards and even refrigerator magnets. FRENCH artiste Jean-Pierre Smadja, also known as Smadj, enthralled Qatar music lovers with a blend of multi-cultural tunes during a concert at the Qatar National Theatre on Friday. The performance was part of Smadja’s current tour of some Gulf countries which include Oman, Kuwait and the UAE. The event was organised by the Institut Francais, formerly known as the French Cultural Centre, with assistance from the Tunisian and Greek embassies in Qatar. Talking to Qatar Tribune, Cultural Programme Manager at the Institut Estelle Roure said, “Our mission is to promote interaction between different communities and cul- tures. We want to bring French culture to Qatar and hope to find ways to share cultural activities with others.” Roure added, “Smadj lives in Turkey, where he met a member of his band, Orhan Osman, a Greek national. The band experiments with oud in fusion with electronic music. So, this concert cuts across cultures. The Institut Francais appreciates the opportunity to entertain people in this way because Qatar is a multicultural country. We are thankful to the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage for hosting this event.” For his part, Smadj, talking about his experiences, said, “I have been to Qatar before. But it was with a different band, DuOud. We also recorded an album with Yemeni musicians and spent a month in Yemen and visited Oman, Dubai (the UAE) and Qatar. I was born in Tunisia, but left for France with my parents at the age of five. I don’t speak Arabic but my parents do. I have an interest in the Tunisian culture. Having spent 30 years in France, I went to Turkey to work. I am now dividing my time between Istanbul and Paris. I also love the Turkish culture with its oriental flavour.” Smadj was accompanied by Orhan Osman, who played the bouzouki, a Greek stringed instrument, and Rico Gauthier, a Frenchman who played the flute and saxophone. The music was a blend of Western and Oriental forms, styles and instruments. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic community, including the Greek and Tunisian ambassadors.
