(JALAL PATHIYOOR) Ministry steps up efforts to curb software piracy JOSEPH VARGHESE DOHA THE Ministry of Justice will collaborate with Adobe Systems Incorporated MENA to step up efforts to protect intellectual property rights (IPR) and reduce software piracy in Qatar, according to Abdulla Ahmad Qayed, director of Intellectual Property Centre at the ministry. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Qayed said the ministry would organise a series of seminars and other events to create awareness about the negative social and economic effects of piracy among resellers and end-users. He said Adobe MENA would be a key partner in the efforts. Qayed pointed out that government efforts in the last five years have contributed to a significant reduction in software piracy rates. “Qatar has taken a firm stand against software piracy and violation of intellectual property rights. The Ministry of Justice, in particular, has been committed to tackling this problem by underlining the legal implications of IPR violations while also creating awareness about the detrimental effects of using pirated software,” he said. “Resellers and end-users have to Abdulla Ahmad Qayed (left) with Naser Samaenah at a press conference, in Doha, on Tuesday. (MANEESH BAKSHI) realise that software piracy harms a country’s innovation and ability to continuously produce intellectual property, which eventually reduces overall economic activity. We plan, in collaboration with Adobe, to execute high-profile initiatives to maximise the use of genuine software and further reduce piracy in Qatar,” he added. He urged people to report individuals or organisations using pirated software to the appropriate agencies or contact the Ministry of Justice on telephone number 44842274. Head of Anti-Piracy and License Compliance at Adobe Systems MENA Naser Samaenah said: “The Ministry of Justice has been leading the campaign against IPR violation in Qatar, which has reflected positively on the country’s software piracy rates over the last five years. Still, there is much more that needs to be done through the combined efforts of the government, software industry, resellers and end-users.” He said Adobe has a legal right to initiate action against the use of pirated software. “Studies have shown that a significant reduction in software piracy can generate millions of Riyals of additional revenue for the government as well as new jobs and a range of investment opportunities in the IT-related industries,” Samaenah said. QATAR Airways’ first Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft took off from Doha for Dubai on Tuesday on its maiden commercial flight. The state-of-the-art aircraft is being deployed on four daily rotations between the two cities, marking a new era for Middle East aviation as Qatar Airways is the Boeing 787 launch customer in the region. The Flight QR106 took off from Doha International Airport at 0800 hrs for the one-hour journey to Dubai. The 787 services to and from the UAE will target peak travel times in a combination of morning, afternoon and night flights to Dubai. The new operation came in less than a week after the aircraft’s delivery flight from Seattle to the Doha International Airport to give staff an opportunity to get familiar with the aircraft before it entered commercial service. Qatar Airways has placed orders for 60 Dreamliners. The next four 787s are due to join the fleet by the end of December. Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar al Baker said the maiden commercial route marked another achievement for the airline. “This day signifies an exciting and anticipated occasion for Qatar Airways as well as the global aviation industry. It is with pride for my country, our employees and myself that we are embarking on another momentous achievement for our awardwinning airline with the introduction of 787 passenger flights. The Dreamliner is yet another first for Qatar Airways, our customers and for the Middle East aviation industry.” He added: “Dubai is one of our most popular routes and we felt it is important to give our passengers in and around our neighbouring city an opportunity to experience the comforts of our new plane before it begins long-haul commercial services. With this launch, we reaffirm our continued commitment to challenge and lead the aviation industry.” “I have no doubt that our passengers will cherish their first time onboard our 787s and look forward to savouring the experience time and again. The 787 raises the bar for luxury commercial travel and the experience for travellers around the world will never be the same again,” Baker added. Qatar Airways has ordered for 60 Dreamliners. The next four 787s are due to join the fleet by the end of December. After the Doha – Dubai route, the 787 will spread its wings on one of the airline’s five daily flights to London Heathrow. As more 787s join the fleet over the course of the next few weeks, the aircraft will be inducted on other long-haul routes including Zurich, Frankfurt and Delhi. Qatar Airways has 254 custom-made seats across its 787 Business and Economy Class cabins with specially designed interiors, together with a unique inflight entertainment system offering over 1,000 audio and video programming options. Its Dreamliners are also the world’s first fully connected 787s with wireless facilities for passengers to remain in touch with their friends and loved ones on the ground. (JALAL PATHIYOOR) EFFECTS of extremism and civil war, childhood memories, art of dance and Egyptian women were some of the subjects discussed in this year’s Arab Film Competition at the DTFF. Four films revolving around these themes were presented at a press conference in Al Mirqab Hotel on Tuesday. They are among the 27 films vying for best in narrative, documentary and short films from the region to be announced at the award ceremony to be held at Al Rayyan Theatre on Thursday. Director Brahim Fritah shared his experience of working with 200 inexperienced child actors for his entry Playground Chronicles. Inspired by true events from his childhood (between five and 15 years), the director revisited his experience against the backdrop of social turmoil. The young Brahim was played by Yanis Bahloul. The director praised the young actor. “There were about 350 children who auditioned for different roles in the movie. We got 220 of them and Yanis was among the first few boys who auditioned. I was impressed with his intellect and the way he moves with the camera and his acting,” said Brahim. Meanwhile, the documentary O My Body! explores art of dance through behind-thescene experience of dancers. Instead of showing the dancers perform on stage, director Laurent Ait Benalla featured them during rehearsals. He said for him this was a new technique that offers a new experience to the viewers. It shows the transformation of the young dancers backstage. “Around 400 young people from Algeria auditioned. We selected 10 of them. The huge turn out of people shows that Algerians are curious about hip-hop dancing. They are open to this new kind of dance,” said Laurent. The Repentant which was screened in various film festivals including in Cannes explores the ‘dark era’ of Algeria. Director Merzak Allouache said the film shed light on the events that transpired in the country and an opportunity to share Algeria’s story which has not been explored, unlike the events in Egypt and Tunisia. “I believe I have an obligation toward the society. I believe this movie is part of a more comprehensive approach. It may not change everything in Algeria but it is a way of examining things,” the director said. He added that all the Made in Qatar makes Indian dilemma about crossover cinema its presence felt TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA QATAR Foundation’s investment in media education is paying off at this year’s DTFF’s Made in Qatar series, with three short films that began as student work at NUQ premiering at Katara’s Opera House. The films were Sara al Derham’s Ghazil – The Story of Rashed and Jawaher, a family drama taking place in the Gulf 100 years ago; Bader, a documentary about a boy who uses poetry to overcome problems at his local school by Sara al Saadi, Latifa Abdulla al Darwish and Maaria Assami; and Amna al Khalaf’s animation about a woman following her heart called Brains of Empowerment. Khalaf said that she drew on Qatar’s diversity for inspiration. “I try to combine folklore and traditions of different cultures to try and send a meaningful message,” Khalaf said. In an effort to project Qatar’s growing creative talent onto an ever-bigger stage, Doha Film Institute and NUQ co-hosted the opening night of the series in style with a red carpet screening and hip-hop concert at Katara’s Corniche. The sell-out screening fea- tured the premiere of Lyrics Revolt, a feature-length documentary about hip-hop and the Arab Spring. The film was produced by NUQ alumni Shannon Farhoud, Ashlene Ramadan, Rana Khaled and Melanie Fridgant, and received cheers from the audience throughout the night. “It was great to see local filmmaking receive such enthusiastic support from both international visitors and across Qatari society,” said Dean and CEO of NUQ Everette E Dennis. “We believe there is a great thirst for more original content produced in Qatar and the region, and we are encouraged by the growing number of local people telling their own stories.” Sara al Saadi, director of Bader. while his mind was focused on telling a story to the public and less concerned of the competition. “Festivals are opportunities to meet filmmakers and to have your movie screened for different viewers. I thought about the people when I made the movie, and not about winning or the festival itself. I thought about Algeria. Sadly, while The Repentant has been shown in different festivals it has been screened only thrice in Algeria,” said Merzak. Another film presented is In the Shadow of a Man directed by Hanan Abdalla. The movie tells the story of four Egyptian women from different backgrounds. It explores “what is it to be a woman in Egypt today”. Finding new ways to tell tales TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA (From left) Ashutosh Gowariker, Anupam Kher and Rajeev Masand at a panel discussion, in Doha, on Tuesday. (JALAL PATHIYOOR) JOSEPH VARGHESE DOHA THE process of crossover may exist in certain movies, but they are not made with a global objective, said a panel of eminent movie personalities during a discussion on ‘Bollywood Films — Crossover’ on Tuesday. The panel expressed the opinion that Indian cinema do not depict a national canvas as films were made in different languages based on regional topics and traditions. Director Ashutosh Gowariker and actor Anupam Kher took part in the discussion while film critic Rajeev Masand moderated the session held at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Opening the discussion, Gowariker said that Bollywood films were primarily focused on Indian audience and was not afraid of taking the global stage. “It is true that most Indian movies are inclusively for the domestic audience. It is not a matter of fear. We have a large audience back home and the movies are self-sufficient. Moreover, filmmakers in India need to cater to different audience with regional appeal and attention to local details,” he said. For his part, Kher said that movies were not made with a specific objective of being a crossover. “It is not the movies but actors who need to cross over. What matters most about a movie is its quality. The rest just follows. It is the movie’s originality and craft that matters,” he said. Gowariker said the distribution network in India “was not very effective in the past and a lot of movies suffered”. He added, “Lagaan was treated as a movie with a universal theme. It was appreciated in countries like Brazil and the US. But we cannot plan and put all the ingredients in a movie for it to be appreciated by the global audience.” Kher stressed that movies were made for the people. He continued, “A filmmaker looks to make a movie which can appeal to the sensibilities of the audience. Original works always get the deserved recognition.” He suggested that marketing tactics need to be strengthened to make films more appealing. Dismissing the idea that the length of Indian films makes it a liability to go global, Gowariker said, “Movies such as Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series are long, but enjoyed by everyone. The movies’ length does not matter. Different genres demand different time-length.” IN a Doha Talks session entitled ‘Transmedia: Storytelling in the Digital Age’ held as part of the fourth Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF), panelists discussed the power of good storytelling to transcend multiple platforms, the role of location in multi-platform entertainment and the power of transmedia to create immersive, interactive and engaging content. Mayhad Tousi, co-founder and CEO of Boomgem, said there are three drivers of change in the digital world — demographic shifts, a reshaped global power structure and disruptive innovation. The session, moderated by Ayman Itamil, went on to discuss how, as technology develops, it affects the way we tell, understand and enjoy stories and how, from immersive games to interactive websites, multi-platform storytelling is becoming the new standard of audience engagement. “Storytelling needs to be sustainable and it isn’t in its current form,” said Tousi. “Transmedia is about finding new ways of telling stories using more than just film or traditional media as a platform. “It’s about using new ways of delivering stories. It’s not about resisting a rapidly changing environment,” Tousi added. De Niro leads Silver Linings Playbook’s MENA premiere AILYN AGONIA DOHA DAVID O Russell’s film Silver Linings Playbook was wellreceived during its MENA premiere at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival on Monday. The People Choice Award winner in the Toronto International Film Festival has Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence among its cast. De Niro, who led the film’s red carpet event held prior to the screening, surprised the audience when he went on stage to introduce the movie. He was accompa- nied by his co-star Anupam Kher. Doha Film Institute (DFI) CEO Abdulaziz al Khater graced the occasion and warmly welcomed hundreds of fans who trooped to Al Rayyan Theatre for the special screening. The complexity of the characters De Niro and Jacki Weaver as the football-crazed parents of ‘bipolar’ diagnosed Patrick played by Cooper maintains its hilarious momentum till the end. The legendary De Niro, as always, is in top form portraying a supportive father and someone who pins his hope on superstition, which is actually the driving force behind his role’s comic element. Cooper in this movie proved that he was more than just a pretty face in Hollywood. As a mentally-disturbed character, he is David O Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook has Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence among its cast. His onscreen chemistry with Lawrence who played the depressed young widow Tiffany also complimented his acting and the “crazi- ness of Patrick”. Lawrence received mixed feedback with her portrayal in the Hunger Games. In this film, her maturity as an actor is well articulated. In real life, Cooper is over a decade older than Lawrence, a fact other critics have pointed out. But as Patrick and Tiffany, the age gap did not register onscreen at all. Even during her confrontation scene with the great De Niro, Lawrence asserted her maturity. Overall, Silver Linings Playbook is a must-see among the films being showcased in this year’s Festival. It will have an encore at Al Rayyan Theatre at 6pm on Friday. 20 Wednesday, November 21, 2012 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 9:00 pm OSN News: MSNBC NEWSNATION 9:15 pm Disney Channel: KIM POSSIBLE 7:40 pm Discovery HD Showcase: THROUGH THE WORMHOLE WITH MORGAN FREEMAN 7:00 pm OSN Sports 4: ANGLO WELSH LV CUP TV PRIME TIME GUIDE OSN NEWS AL JAZEERA 7:00 PM LIVE MSNBC THE ED SHOW NEWS 7:30 PM DISNEY CHANNEL CARTOON NETWORK ADVENTURE TIME A.N.T.
