WCMCQ students Sanah Sadiq, Zena Ghazala, Arnab Chowdhury with a professor, in Doha, recently.
Three WCMCQ students
publish 1st review article
JOSEPH VARGHESE
DOHA
THREE students of the Weill
Cornell Medical College in Qatar
(WCMCQ) have written a review
article on neurotoxicity titled,
‘Metal Toxicity at the Synapse:
Presynaptic, Postsynaptic and Long
Term Effects’, which has been published in the Journal of Toxicology.
This is the first time the university’s students have written such a
review article.
It took almost two years for the
42-page article to be completed by
the third year medical students,
Sanah Sadiq, Zena Ghazala and
Arnab Chowdhury. The review
was done after a research of 260
papers on toxicology published
over 40 years.
Commenting on the efforts of the
students, WCMCQ Assistant Dean
for Student Affairs Dietrich
Busselberg, who assisted the students in the project, said, that it was
the most comprehensive paper on
metal neurotoxicity.
Busselberg, who is also professor
of physiology and biophysics said,
“Most of the papers on this subject
are very short comprising of just a
few pages. But this one has been
elaborate, with all the details. The
students have taken great pains
researching the published articles
and going through them for almost
two years. It is a fabulous work
with comprehensive information.”
It took almost two
years for the 42-page
article to be completed
by third year medical
students Sanah Sadiq,
Zena Ghazala and
Arnab Chowdhury. The
review was done after
a research of 260
papers on toxicology.
Chowdhury said that they looked
into various aspects of the topic.
“We tried to analyse how metals
affect neurotoxicity and the implications. We also looked into the presence of certain metals in the body. Some of them are important to the body
while others can be harmful,” he said.
Sadiq said the main focus of the
review was to examine the effects of
metals in the central nervous system, specifically at the synapse.
“We highlighted the mechanism
by which metals and their compounds interfere with the process of
synaptic transmission and synaptic
plasticity,” he said.
Ghazala said that different studies had used various methods and
came out with inconsistent findings. “Inconsistent findings have
been the results of application of
different methods. Some people
may use test tube studies while
others may use mice for tests.
Findings from testing on mice
may not work well on the human
body, therefore the inconsistency.
We have taken care of these
aspects in our study,” she said.
Busselberg said that once the
work was completed by the students it was sent to the journal
which readily accepted it. There
were not many problems in getting the review accepted as it was
comprehensive and informative,
he added.

QC opens housing complex for Indonesia’s quake victims
IHSAN YOUSSEF
DOHA
QATAR Charity (QC) inaugurated a large
residential complex in Sumatra to house
victims of the devastating earthquake
which struck Indonesia recently. The housing project — built as part of a series of
humanitarian efforts in the Island nation
— is worth QR2 million.
The inauguration ceremony was attended
by QC Director of Follow-up Ibrahim
Zainal, Deputy Governor of West Sumatra
province Dr Andy Zine El-Abidine, Deputy
Governor of Padang Abdul Ghaffar and
Director of QC office in Indonesia Hassan
Ozkor. A QC delegation was also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Zainal said,
“The main objective of the QC’s housing
project is to achieve sustainable development for poor communities.”
“QC launched this relief project in
Sumatra immediately after the earthquake
struck the region two years ago. The QC also
provided emergency aid, such as food, relief
materials and water supply. Moreover, the
QC constructed other makeshift houses for
those affected by the disaster,” Zainal said.
Qatar Charity officials with Indonesian earthquake victims, recently.
“The residential complex in Badan
Bariaman is one of the leading projects completed by the QC. The project enjoys technical and engineering expertise. It was made
at a cost of QR2,008,000,” Zainal added.
The QC official further said that the housing project was designed to accommodate
the affected families, as well as to improve
the living and environmental conditions of
social groups affected by the earthquake.
“Around 70 housing units have been provided. It can accommodate 70 earthquake
affected families. Each housing unit consists
of two rooms, a hall and health facilities in a
45-square-metre area. The housing units
are permanent houses and are earthquake
resistant. The project has been completed
under the supervision of the QC’s engineering team in Indonesia,” he noted.
On the selection of the families for the
houses, Zainal said, “The QC delegation
reviewed a list of families affected by the
earthquake. We were assisted by community leaders and local authorities in Sumatra.
The housing units were delivered to the families who were severely affected by the earthquake. The QC delegation supervised the
process of the families’ movement from
temporary shelter to the new housing units.”
Zainal pointed out that the QC delegation also constructed a mosque named
Nur Al Yaqin in Padang, West Sumatra.
The single-storey mosque consists of ablution and health facilities. It was built on a
225-square-metre area at a cost of
QR137,070,00.
“The QC also signed a memorandum of
understanding with the Ministry of Health
to construct a health clinic in Padang, on a
400-square-metre area. The clinic consists
of two floors. It has modern health facilities
and was completed at a cost of
QR363,000,00,” Zainal said.
Besides the work in Sumatra, the QC has
also placed a foundation stone of Al
Mujahideen Mosque, to be built on a 300square-metre area. The mosque is intended
to be a social and religious centre for the
people of Depok province in West Java.
“The QC wants to ensure human dignity
and social justice for poor communities
through the implementation of such projects,” Zainal said.
He thanked the people of Padang and the
local authorities for their cooperation with
the QC team while executing their duties.
The QC delegation also inaugurated the
Tariq Bin Ziyad Educational Centre in
Bekasi region, in the province of Java,
Indonesia. The centre comprises a school,
a mosque, a library, a hostel facility for students and a health clinic. The projects are
part of a series of projects implemented by
the QC in the field of community development in Asia.
For his part, Indonesian Minister of
Social Affairs Al Sayyed Moukil commended the QC for its relief efforts and humanitarian projects in the region. He expressed

Virgin Health Bank partners
QU orientation sessions conclude

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
PATIENTS in the UK with
diseases such as leukaemia,
lymphoma and sickle-cell
anaemia are to benefit from
better access to potentially
life-saving stem cell therapy
thanks to a new multifaceted
partnership that has been
announced by Virgin Health
Bank
and
Cambridge
University Hospitals.
Virgin Health Bank (VHB),
the cord blood bank whose
international headquarters
are at Qatar Science &
Technology Park (QSTP), is
to
collaborate
with
Cambridge
University
Hospitals (CUH) on a range
of initiatives which will
improve the availability of
cord blood banking and stem
cell therapies for both current
and future patients. The
ground-breaking agreement
is the first of its kind between
a private cord blood bank and
a National Health Service
Foundation Trust.
Cord blood is the blood that
remains in the umbilical cord
after a baby has been born. It
is a rich source of stem cells
which, once collected and
processed, can be used in
therapies.
Mothers delivering babies
at the Rosie Hospital in
Cambridge will be able to
contract with VHB to have the
cord blood of their newborns
collected and stored rather
than it being discarded as is
the current practice.
Dr Rajan Jethwa, Virgin
Health Bank Chief Executive,
said: “This agreement is of
immense importance within
the context of the UK healthcare economy. It is a testament to the vision of both
Cambridge
University
Hospitals and Virgin Health
Bank, who together have created an innovative partner-
ship which will benefit
patients and, most importantly, the development and
availability of stem cell units
for transplantation in the UK
and worldwide.
“The UK’s National Health
Service has already used stem
cells from Virgin Health Bank
in a successful transplant for
a child with sickle-cell
anaemia. That child is now
cured and we hope that,
through this partnership, we
will be able to contribute to
improving the quality of life
for patients and saving more
lives in the future.”
Dr Mike Scott the scientific
lead at CUH said this is a
wonderful opportunity which
in the future has the potential
for wider application to provide therapeutic tissue to
replace diseased or damaged
tissues in patients with conditions such as diabetes, degenerative neurological disorders
and cardiovascular disease.”
THE two-day hayakum (orientation) sessions for new
Spring 2012 students of Qatar
University (QU) and their parents concluded on Thursday.
Male
Foundation
Programme and undergraduate students participated in
sessions organised by the
Admission Department to help
them become familiar with the
programmes, resources, services and activities at QU.
The parents’ sessions were
designed to respond to parents’ questions on new and
existing issues, and to address
their concerns and role in supporting their children’s academic experience. Female
students and their parents
had their sessions on
Thursday. The orientation
programme included an open
discussion forum and informative presentations on QU’s
services such as reception
desk, students call centre,
sponsor services, and student

follow-up, as well as advice
and techniques for parents on
how to be involved in student
academic support.
Additionally, the new
admits received personalised
academic advice and course
recommendations. They registered for classes and learnt
how to track their degree
progress, and access MyQU
portal and QU e-mail account
services. They also collected
their ID cards.
Director of Admission Aisha
al Thani said: “During student
orientation, we endeavour to
educate our new students
about, and invite them to
become involved in, the many
academic, co-curricular and
extra-curricular opportunities
that QU offers.”
Director of Student Services
Department Abdulla al
Shandoor said that orienting
parents on the QU environment is part of the solid commitment to bring the best
advisory services to parents in
a way that will enhance their
children’s academic life.
He added that contact with
parents prior to the start of the
academic year helps to build a
strong interactive communication platform that would serve
to mitigate future obstacles
students may face.
