A word from Fr. Ted
Pastoral Appointment
Bishop Brown recently announced that I have been
appointed to a second six-year term as pastor at St.
Pius V parish. I am grateful for his confidence in me
and particularly grateful for the participation by more
than 50 staff members and parishioners who did an
online evaluation of my six years of ministry here. I
hope to work on the weaknesses that they highlighted
and to grow in the skills I need to be a better servant
and shepherd.
I welcome your constructive criticisms and hope for
your generous participation in the many areas of
parish life that cannot thrive without your many gifts.
UCLA Filipino-American Health Study
St. Pius V Parish and UCLA Cancer Center are
collaborating in a study to increase colorectal cancer
screening among Filipino-Americans. The study
includes a small group educational session and three
brief interviews.
We invite Filipino-Americans, 50-75 years of age, to
participate in our study. There will be a small
compensation to you and a donation to the parish for
your participation.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE: Sunday, May 29.
“One of the easiest ways that I have found to live out my
Baptismal calling is to give blood. It takes only a few minutes,

Share your God-given gift with someone in need. (You can give
at 16 years old with parent’s permission).
STEUBENVILLE YOUTH WEEKEND: We will be
attending the San Diego Steubenville Youth Conference from
Friday July 29 thru Sunday July 31 at California State
University San Diego. We either dorm at the university or at the
University of San Diego. The weekend is filled with
outstanding talks, (especially the chastity talks for young men
and women), music, Mass, praise and worship and deep
reflection. The cost of the weekend is $200 which includes the
conference, food, room and transportation. A 30% deposit of
$60.00 is needed by May 29 to register, then you can make
payments until you are paid in full. We will have opportunities
for fundraising that will go specifically to your conference fees.
The conference is open to all high school youth as well as those
graduating from the eighth grade this year. There are some
scholarships available for youth that cannot afford part or all of

SE NECESITA UN PASTOR
Por un tiempo estuvo de moda tener cerdos como
mascotas. La publicidad que rodeó a estas criaturas nos
informó que, contrario a la imagen popular, son animales
muy limpios y también bastante inteligentes. Resulta triste
decirlo, pero las ovejas probablemente nunca gozarán de
este tipo de popularidad doméstica. Ni limpias ni
inteligentes, son mayormente indefensas cuando se dejan
solas, aunque el rebaño sea numeroso. La imagen bíblica
de que somos un rebaño de ovejas no resulta muy
favorecedora. Triste es el caso de las ovejas sin pastor
porque, sin duda, perecerán dada su incapacidad de valerse
por sí mismas o su carencia de defensas contra sus
predadores. Colocarnos al centro de esta imagen poco
favorecedora puede fortalecer nuestra fe. Sólo cuando
tomamos profunda conciencia de que necesitamos un
pastor, podemos apreciar nuestras bendiciones al haber
sido entregados al Pastor, a aquél que dio su vida por
nosotros y fue resucitado para la vida eterna en el Espíritu,
a fin de poder guiarnos por siempre mientras lo seguimos
en fe.

ÉSE NO SOY YO
Nunca olvidaré mi primer día de clases. En aquellos días las escuelas primarias católicas tenían un gran número
de alumnos. En mi clase de primer grado había cincuenta y dos estudiantes. La maestra hizo una etiqueta con cada uno
de nuestros nombres y nos la entregó para que nos la pusiéramos ese primer día de clase. Lamentablemente, mi etiqueta
decía “Edward Gallagher”. Ése no es mi nombre. Cuando noté eso, intenté protestar: “Hermana, ése no es mi . . .”. Ella
respondió inmediatamente: “Edward, no se le debe contestar a una hermana”. Intenté nuevamente, “Pero hermana…”.
Ella tenía las manos llenas con cincuenta y dos de nosotros, y aparentemente no había tiempo para esta conversación. Así
es que pasé mi primer día de clases con un nombre que no era el mío. Nunca olvidaré el rostro de mi madre parada en la
puerta de la casa ansiosa por recibir a su primogénito luego de su primer día de clases. Miró la etiqueta que leía “Edward
Gallagher”, frunció el ceño, e inmediatamente llamó a la escuela para aclarar el asunto.
LLAMADOS POR NUESTRO NOMBRE
Esta temprana vivencia me enseñó mucho sobre el valor y la importancia de mi nombre. En el evangelio de hoy
escuchamos a Jesús decirle a sus discípulos que las ovejas aprenden a reconocer la voz del pastor. No siguen la voz de
un extraño. En el rito del bautismo, la primera pregunta que se les hace a los padres es: “¿Qué nombre le dan a su hijo?”
Y justo antes de decir las palabras “Yo te bautizo . . .” el sacerdote o diácono llama al que está por ser bautizado por su
nombre. En cierto modo, aprendemos a escuchar nuestro nombre pronunciado por Dios desde el momento de nuestro
renacimiento en las aguas bautismales. Ésta es la raíz de toda llamada vocacional, ya sea el matrimonio, el orden sagrado
o la vida consagrada. En este día que recordamos que Jesús es nuestro bondadoso pastor, escuchemos una vez más al

FIN DE SEMANA DE STEUBENVILLE PARA LOS
JOVENES: Estaremos asistiendo la Conferencia de Jóvenes de
Steubenville en San Diego salimos el viernes 29 de Julio hasta
el domingo 31 de julio. La Conferencia se dará lugar en la
Universidad de San Diego. Pasamos la noche en el mismo lugar
o en la Universidad de San Diego. El fin de semana está lleno de
temas excelentes, (especialmente el tema de la castidad para los
jóvenes), música, Misa, alabanza y adoración y reflexiones
profundas. El costo del fin de semana es de $200.00 que
incluye la conferencia, comida, alojamiento y transportación.
Deposito de $60.00 es requerido a mas tardar para el 29 de
Mayo para poder registrarse. Después pueden hacer pagos hasta
saldar la cuenta. Tendremos oportunidad para recaudar fondos
que irán específicamente a las cuotas de la conferencia. La
conferencia está abierta a todos los jóvenes estudiantes de high
school al igual que aquellos que están por recibirse del 8º grado
escolar en este año. Hay algunas becas disponibles para
