Patients have come to us for generations, finding exceptional programs not available elsewhere. Nestled on the serene banks of the When mental illness or addiction strikes, Silver Hill is one of the Silvermine River, there is a haven for all of those struggling with preeminent psychiatric hospitals to turn to for help. We are a fully mental illness and addiction at Silver Hill Hospital. licensed and accredited psychiatric hospital specializing in the treatment of mental illness and addiction that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We hold ourselves to the highest standard of care every day. Ward F. Cleary | Co-Chair, Board of Directors Silver Hill is a private, independent, not-for-profit facility. Our priorities are based on patient needs and the best evidence-based practices, untethered by bureaucracy. The bottom line will never trump patient care. That is why philanthropy is so important: as a 501(c)(3) organization, every dollar we raise goes right back into Deann E. Murphy | Co-Chair, Board of Directors “ I want to thank Silver Hill for helping me find my voice & giving me control over my life. For the first time in my adult life I truly feel a sense of well-being & hope.” PAG E Restore Hope 1 From the President Restoring Hope…One Patient at a Time Dear Friends of Silver Hill Hospital, Patient-centered medicine is not new at Silver Hill. It is typically very difficult to obtain meaningful information about the answer to this question, largely because there are many obsta- 72% cles to staying in touch with most of the patients. I can’t thank you enough for taking care of me & teaching me the direction I need to go.” Dr. Kevin Shushtari Over an 18 month period we discharged 645 such patients from our Medical Illness residential programs, of whom 514 (80%) agreed to enter into our Our new onsite internal medicine specialist provides compre- Recovery Support program. They also represent a benchmark for us against which to measure our own continual efforts to improve clinical outcomes. “ T he nurses were really helpful & I could talk to them. T hey were very cautious with my asthma & allergies.” PAG E Restore Hope 3 Program Development We have implemented innovative enhancements to both our adolescent and disordered eating programs. Our Adolescent Transitional Living Program provides highly structured residential treatment for teens. This year, we hired child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Krasner as Service Chief, and our multi-disciplinary treatment team completed intensive two-week Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training. We increased our emphasis on individual therapy and regular work with families as well. This year we also hired psychologist Dr. Erin Kleifield, an expert in the field of disordered eating. She enhanced our specialized track for eating disorders for both adults and adolescents and has been working to integrate DBT into the treatment of disordered eating. “ T hank you for all your dedication and service to our child. T his program was an excellent choice.” “ More often than not, the delicious fare helped me get back into a routine of eating multiple balanced meals a day.” We introduced a West African Djembe Drumming program in our Adolescent Transitional Living Program to promote mindfulness, an essential element of DBT. The drumming program was generously funded by a grateful family. Pharmacogenetics I am proud of our pioneering use of pharmacogenetics, the study of genetic differences among people in how effectively their body uses and metabolizes certain medications. There have recently been important advances in the application of pharmacogenetics to medications used in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Silver Hill is one of the few psychiatric institutions in the tri-state area that now makes regular use of this state-of-the-art technology. When the usual use of medication does not seem to be working for a particular patient, pharmacogenetic testing allows our psychiatrists to pinpoint which medication, or combination of medications, should be prescribed for that patient based on his or her genetic makeup. This not only makes recovery more likely but also increases the probability that the patient will want to continue the recommended medication regimen after discharge. We are only at the beginning of this very exciting revolution in understanding the relation between Educational display at the New Canaan Library for National genetics and treatment effectiveness, and Silver Hill Hospital will stay Eating Disorders Awareness Week at the forefront of its application to patient care. PAG E 4 Silver Hill Hospital 2013 Annual Report In July, Tibetan Monks visited the hospital and we hosted an evening of “Travel to Tibet,” where the monks told stories and demonstrated their work on the sand mandala for the public. Mental Health Education Providing mental health education to medical professionals is central to our mission. Keeping up with advances in the treatment of mental illness and addiction is a challenge, especially for clinicians in private practice. This year Silver Hill sponsored 14 “Grand Rounds” continuing education programs attended by more than 750 clinicians from the tri-state area. Topics included prescription opioid abuse, chronic pain and a review of the new diagnostic criteria in psychiatry, described in the most recent Diagnostic Community Outreach and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Some of the top Community outreach was at the forefront of our efforts. In researchers and clinicians recruited by the American Psychiatric February we published our first Community Health Needs Assess- Association to help write the new DSM-5 guidelines came to Silver ment detailing mental health and addiction needs after conducting Hill to provide continuing education for medical professionals in research and interviews with over 20 Fairfield County community the community. stakeholders. We also continued to sponsor community educational events in the surrounding area. In April, for instance, we partnered with six Wilton community organizations for a screening of Joe Pantoliano’s award-winning documentary, “No Kidding, Me 2!” teaching a standing-room-only crowd about mental illness and recovery. We energized our social media focus to expand our reach even further and provide greater access to credible, pertinent information. Our blog covers mental illness in non-medical terms, and you can now find us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Links for all of these, along with the complete Community Health Needs Assessment, can be found on our website, www.silverhillhospital.org. Patients and families come to us when they need hope restored. Our commitment has never wavered. We promise to treat each patient with dignity and every family member with respect, one individual patient at a time. Co-sponsored movie screening and panel discussion Sigurd H.
