Scenes from last year’s September Sensation: The GRalley
THE GRALLEY: Funding our Mission
The excitement is palpable as time for the GRalley draws near! Our numerous section leaders have been
working overtime to make everything just right. Vendors have been recruited, volunteers assigned, auction
items added, equipment ordered, bands booked – the fun is waiting to happen. What we need still is for you to
invite your friends, family and neighbors to come join us, thereby making sure that this, our essential parish
fundraiser, is a success. Thank you so much, and see you next Saturday for the Edgewater GRalley!

From Father Grassi
It’s hard to believe that it’s coming up this Saturday, our third annual GRalley. So many people have been
working so hard to make the day a success, highlighting the Edgewater Community, having fun, and providing
needed funds for St. Gertrude Parish. A personal acknowledgement of my gratitude goes out to our chair
couple and their co chairs for providing the necessary leadership. Thanks to the folks working on ticket sales
and the ones promoting the raffle, both key to the financial success of the event which will be coordinated by
the finance chairs. Marketing has made the GRalley a known product in the community and beyond. The
Silent Auction tent will be a magnet thanks to those who gathered and will display the items. Sponsorship
seekers have raised funds that will help defray the cost. And, the volunteer co coordinators will have over 400
of you in place to make the day flow seamlessly. Community Relations has worked on our licensing and lots
of those necessary details. There will be howls of delight from children due to the creativity of the Kid’s Area
team. Eco-Friendly Advocacy will keep us green and teach us to be even greener. Gert’s Grill and Gert’s
Goodies head chefs will coordinate the army of cooks who will assure that we are well fed while Logistics will
have everything in place including other restaurants. The Artisan Alley procurers have gathered a bevy of
booths with beautiful and unique items to tempt us. Security will assure that we will be safe. And, the
Entertainment Committee has put together a spectacular line up. What a team! Thanks to them and to all of
you who have volunteered and to all who will attend this coming Saturday. God will bless you for your
generosity! See you there.
DJG
The words of Amos and Luke today deal with the failure of material wealth and the futility of
selfishness. Instead of seeking security and assurance in our "things," we are reminded that “…there is one
God. There is also one mediator between God and God’s children, the man Christ Jesus.” For me, the central
message of Jesus is to love unconditionally, to realize we are all one and beloved by the one God. Our Jewish
brothers and sisters have just completed the period of introspection and renewal culminating in Yom Kippur,
and will soon celebrate Sukkot, the festival of the harvest. Our Muslim sisters and brothers just celebrated Eid
al Fitr, the joyous breaking of the fast of Ramadan. Although praying with different voices, all celebrate the
unlimited love of the one God.
As Catholics our central prayer is one of inclusion, abundance, and sharing – the gift of the table, the
Eucharist. In our Eucharist we commemorate the gift of Jesus who “gave himself as ransom for all,” and
renew our own commitment to pray, act, and celebrate the unlimited gift of God’s love. An old song says
“they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” Today is also Catechetical Sunday, acknowledging that each of
us is called to be the love of God in the world. What better catechesis than to share with a spirit of abundance,
not the fear of tomorrow which leads to hoarding, but the wonder of today that is God’s merciful gift. In our
praying, our doing, our celebrating (even our GRalley!) we can embody the love that forms us. One of my
favorite quotes from St. Francis of Assisi is “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words;”
but perhaps even more to the point is this one from Anonymous, “It is no use walking anywhere to preach
unless our walking is our preaching.” And maybe the most perfect is from my mom, who had
an expansive vision of family. When one of us would ask whether we could bring a friend
home to dinner, her stock reply was “Absolutely, we can always throw another rock in the
soup!” The soup kettle is always full, and there is always room to squeeze one more chair
around the table. Mom understood best: one God, one love, together.
