PIT BULL RESCUE CENTRAL Where Education Meets Rescue Annual Report 2009 Pit Bull Rescue Central Page 2 Our Vision: Pit Bull Rescue Central envisions a compassionate world where pit bulls and pit bull mixes reside in responsible, loving homes and where their honor and positive image is restored and preserved. Our Mission: As an organization, Pit Bull Rescue Central (PBRC) will: • Help relieve suffering of and prevent cruelty to dogs identified as pit bulls and mixes thereof, through the public dissemination of educational information • Help reduce the number of homeless pit bulls and mixes thereof, through the public dissemination of educational information • Facilitate the rescue and placement of homeless dogs identified primarily as pit bulls and mixes thereof, into responsible homes • Participate in fundraising in order to provide caretakers of pit bulls and mixes thereof, with the means to: 1. seek veterinary treatment 2. spay or neuter 3. provide food, shelter, and other basic necessities 4. assist a dog to prevent it from being treated in a cruel or inhumane fashion Chevy was hit by a car and her leg needed to be amputated. Her owner LaTeshia reached out to PBRC for financial assistance towards the surgery. LaTeshia - "We are forever blessed as well as touched by you. Thank you so much! Words cannot describe how we appreciate all the help you have given us. You saved our baby girl. Chevy is doing wonderful. She is back to her old self bouncing around as if she had all 4 of her legs. My wheelchair bound son says 'Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You saved my best friend and I don't know what I would do without her.'" “Words cannot describe how we appreciate all the help you have given us. You saved our baby girl. ” Pit Bull Rescue Central Message from the Board of Directors: 2009 was another busy year for PBRC and its volunteers. With a challenging economy, PBRC not only felt its effects with individual donations but it seemed that we received many emails from homeowners facing foreclosure, with no place for their dog to go. The basic needs seem to continue to grow – more dogs in need of homes, more people in need of financial assistance for veterinary care as well as spay and neuter. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to help many dogs in 2009. Even with the down economy, we were able to hold a very successful Poppymart auction in September. And, we launched a very exciting spay/neuter grant program – allowing your donations to reach many more dogs and those who care about them. Fewer unwanted pit bulls will be born thanks to spay/neuter efforts. 2009 was a special year in that many of PBRC’s hardworking and dedicated volunteers took time out from their personal lives to travel to St. Louis, Missouri to care for over 500 dogs impounded from the largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history. We thank them for caring, and for tackling a very difficult task. We hope you enjoy this review of 2009. We look forward to a successful 2010 as we work together to improve the lives of the dogs we love. The PBRC Board of Directors Sneaky is an almost 2 year old female Pit Bull who is looking for an active home in California. She is a very athletic, energetic dog that is looking for a sport/ working home and has already started weight pulling and dock diving! Her left eye never fully developed so it was removed, but that does not slow her down one bit. Sneaky would do best as an only dog or with an appropriate male companion. She loves people and kids – true to the breed! If you are looking for a versatile sporting dog – look no further! PBRC Board of Directors 2009: President – Holly Bukes Vice President – Dawn Carroll Secretary – Stephanie Feldstein Treasurer – Alexis Kelly Director—Sarah Finney Director – Sharon Medearis Director – Marcy Setter Director – Pam Fradkin Director – Chris Cook Director – Amanda Clase Director – Tara Garland Page 3 Pit Bull Rescue Central Page 4 Daily Operations: PBRC's all-volunteer staff is comprised of 36 individuals across the U.S., Canada and Europe. Our Volunteer Committee manages the screening of additional volunteers for an ever-increasing workload. Volunteers reviewed and processed 3,813 applications for adoption in 2009. General inquiry emails to the site numbered 225 per month with an average response given within hours. The website generated over 300,000 hits each day and, though our server is aging, our savvy technical team kept us up and running and virtually no downtime was experienced. Our custom dog-listing application ended 2009 with 2,200 listings hosted on the site. The dog-listing application continues to perform with very little downtime. The web team continues to manage technical support cases due to programming bugs and user-friendliness issues. We realize that modifications and improvements are needed and the application is currently under review. Our website was expanded with exciting new training content including: ‘Before you get your pit bull’; ‘The art of being a breed ambassador’; ‘Dog Introductions’; ‘Managing a multi-dog household’; ‘Crate and Rotate’, and; ‘Crate-training’. Additional informational pages were also added including: ‘Pet loss and grief’; ‘National Pit Bull Awareness Day’; St. Louis Second Chance Fund’, and; ‘Spay/ neuter grant program’. Poppy Shop got a facelift to better facilitate shopping opportunities. All of this was in addition to the daily maintenance that our web team performs to keep the site current and exciting! Allison of Cathedral City, CA, was a full-time student and had recently been laid off from her job. Though she was struggling to make ends meet, she knew it was important to have her pit bulls, Daijah and Plex, spayed and neutered, and applied for assistance through PBRC. Allison's address changed several times throughout the application process, but she never gave up her dogs and she never gave up on getting them sterilized. PBRC was happy to assist! “Though she was struggling to make ends meet, she knew it was important to have her pit bulls, Daijah and Plex, spayed and neutered” Pit Bull Rescue Central Education and Public Relations: Since PBRC is an Internet based organization it's important for us to keep up to date with opportunities to reach out to as many people as we can. Last year we reported that a Facebook page had been created and we had close to 500 friends. This year that number has grown to 4,429 friends. Additionally, PBRC has a Fan Page which has 11,492 fans. Our blog is linked to both pages so anytime a new post is added to our blog it's reaching all of our friends and fans. This has been a great opportunity to share educational material, provide updates on the dogs we are helping and and share upcoming events. We are especially glad to see that the blog posts are regularly generating comments and feedback. Keeping the information and links up to date on our site is a constant work in progress. With so many great new programs being introduced it's important to us to provide as many resources as possible to the people that visit our website. We strive to provide the most valuable and current information out there and this is made possible through communication with a number of responsible Pit Bull related organizations as well as our volunteer team. Three new training pages were created and added to our site: Crate Training: http://www.pbrc.net/training_crate.html The Art of Being a Breed Ambassador: http://www.pbrc.net/ breedambassador.html Polite Greetings: http://www.pbrc.net/politegreetings.html Our annual "I Pittie, the Fool" and Halloween contests provided us with some great photos and a couple of lucky winners! We were very pleased to see so many enthusiastic Pit Bull owners submitting photos and getting involved in the contests. The Pitter Patter Blog which was started last year has been very popular and great new photos are being posted on a regular basis. If you haven't visited the site yet, please do so at: http://pbrcpitterpatter.blogspot.com/ We have many projects planned for 2010 and we're always open to suggestions from our supporters. If there is any information you are unable to find on our site, or something you feel should be added please contact us! Carlos was rescued from the largest dog-fighting ring in U.S. history, and now he is ready to find a loving home that will shower him with treats and kisses. Carlos is very smart and already knows how to sit, lay down, and to walk on a loose leash. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home and would do well in a home with an energetic female dog who loves to wrestle and play as much as he does. Carlos is awaiting his forever home in Missouri. Page 5 Pit Bull Rescue Central Page 6 Fundraising: How is PBRC able to provide financial aid to so many dogs in need, to make sure pit bulls are getting spayed and neutered, to support rescue organizations, promote adoptable dogs, and to create so many up-to-date educational resources for owners, rescuers, and the public? The answer is YOU. Support from individuals - through tax-deductible donations, fundraisers, product purchases from our affiliate companies, and the amazingly generous supporters of Facebook Causes - accounts for the vast majority of PBRC’s income. In addition to direct donations, PBRC volunteers organize various fundraising opportunities to engage our supporters: • The Happy Endings Calendar was a huge hit with 237 entries and 13 lucky winners. • This year we offered a special edition St Louis Fund t-shirt to help the dogs rescued from the Midwest dog fighting raids. Your donations funded their care, training, and transport to their foster homes to help get them on their way to forever homes. • • The PoppyMart online auction continues to be a fun filled and exciting event each year. Thanks to our wonderful auction donors, PoppyMart 2009 had a fantastic selection of quality dog products, unique gifts, and excellent pit bull items that drew in over $13,000 from the winning bidders! PoppyMart not only raises money for the dogs during the auction, it also often leads to ongoing fundraising opportunities with our sponsors. New this year, PBRC was pleased to offer a special holiday Kibble Contest – where supporters got to guess the number of kibble and win a grand prize. Of course, many of our partnerships benefit both homeless dogs and owned dogs. Paco Collars created a design exclusively for PBRC, with the proceeds of each sale benefiting our programs. Idawg sells dog coats that are sized to fit the muscular bodies of our pooches, and we were excited to run a fundraiser that promoted their great product, raised money for PBRC, and gave our supporters a discount. Other treats with a purpose are available in our Poppy Shop including Chelsy’s toys, US Bones, and Best Bully Sticks. Every dollar donated to PBRC, whatever the campaign or time of year, is invaluable to the dogs whose lives are touched by our programs. You make it all possible! “Every dollar donated… is invaluable to the dogs whose lives are touched by our programs” Pit Bull Rescue Central Spay/Neuter Committee: Pit Bull Rescue Central is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless pit bulls and pit bull mixes. At the completion of 2009, Spay/Neuter Committee volunteers had processed 532 applications for assistance. Our extensive research and networking enabled us to assist in locating options and solutions for applicants and inquiries. Additional surgeries were also funded through our Spay/Neuter Grant program. The work of the committee benefited dogs throughout the U.S. and Canada. PBRC announced our newly developed Spay/Neuter Grant program in commemoration of Spay Day USA. Through the grant program PBRC assisted in funding low cost or free spay/neuter programs that specifically benefit these dogs. The committee’s work also includes the dissemination of information regarding health and behavior benefits of spay/neuter, as well as continuing to educate the public on the overpopulation crisis that leads to increased suffering of our breed. The Stern family applied for and received assistance with Mia's spay surgery. They wrote, "Thank you so much for getting Mia help. You don't know how much it means to us here at the Stern residence to get Mia spayed finally." Medical Fund Committee: PBRC’s Medical Fund Committee processed 431 applications from rescues, fosters, shelters, and owners seeking financial assistance for the care of their pit bulls and pit bull mixes this year. With the creation of the St. Louis Second Chance Fund, PBRC has funded medical and basic care for MO Bust dogs on their way to a new beginning. The Medical Fund Committee gave financial assistance to more than 100 cases in 2009! In 2009, the following disbursements were made: Individuals - $14,643.70 Rescuers - $13,181.30 Page 7 Pit Bull Rescue Central Volunteer Committee: PBRC's Volunteer Committee is kept busy assisting PBRC volunteers, processing incoming volunteer applications and adding new volunteers as needed. In an internet-based, volunteer-run organization, these duties keep us very busy! To achieve our goals to help the breed and their advocates, PBRC depends on the skills and backgrounds of our volunteers. The Volunteer Committee makes sure that PBRC'S many committees have the volunteers they need to function effectively. The Volunteer Committee is also responsible for planning our yearly meeting/ gathering. Volunteers donate their time and pay their own way to attend this event. The Volunteer Committee is proud to have helped assemble such a dedicated group of volunteers who not only volunteer with PBRC 365 days a year, but find the time to volunteer in their local communities. Ray Charles was rescued from a high-kill shelter as a baby and is still waiting for his forever home at 3 years old. He was born blind, but it is not a hindrance to him at all. He loves to go for walks and is great on leash. He wrestles and plays with toys and enjoys sleeping in the sun. Ray Charles is looking for an understanding, patient owner who can be his eyes! He is waiting for his adoptive home in California. 2009 Volunteers: Megan Alexander, Sheb (Gulsebnem) Bishop, Holly Bukes, Dawn Carroll, Rob Chesser, Ami Ciontos, Amanda Clase, Chris Cook, Denise D'Antonio, Amy Dengler, Sanya Dunn, Melinda Fayette, Stephanie Feldstein, Sarah Finney, Pam Fradkin, Nikola Halip, Amy Hendrickson, Andrea Jones, Alexis Kelly, Andrea Kilkenney, Lynnette Lynde, Tiffany McBee, Sharon Medearis, Nely Mendoza, Pauline Mercier, Cynthia Polite, Ilene Reid, Luke Rhodes, Jessica Roubitchek, Josh Schneiderman, Marcy Setter, Sue Scime, Gina Taei Current PBRC Volunteers: http://www.pbrc.net/volunteers.html Page 8 Page 9 Pit Bull Rescue Central 2009 Income & Expenses Incom e Sources 2009 F und r ai si ng Pr o j ect s 2 1% D o nat io ns 66% S pa y / N e ut e r A ssi st a nc e M er chand ise 13 % Expenses 2009 37% A ni ma l C a r e Ope r a t i on a l A ssi st a n c e 3% 52% F und R a i si n g P r oj e c t s 5% Edu c a t i on/ Ou t r e a c h 3% Poppy Mart 2009 Donors: 2HoundDesigns, Ameme Designs, Amiela Ciontos, Amy Hendrickson, Amy Turner Studio, Andrea Jones, Andrea Kilkenny, Animal Farm Foundation, Animals & the Afterlife, Annemarie Mountjoy, Art For Paws, Avon Independent Rep/Tiffany, BARK Magazine/The Bark, Bark Natural Pet, Barkingdales, Batzi Belt, Beyond the Tail, Big Apple Pet Supply, Big E's House, Big Paw Designs, Bigdogsporch.com, Bio-Derm Labs Inc Bio-Groom, Bloomingtails Dog Boutique, Blue Acres Farm, Blue Willow Dog Coats, Bourbon and Tank Sabbath, Bow Tie Publishing, Broken Hearts Mended Souls Rescue, Bullywag, Carol Lea Benjamin, Carolyn Cruz/Serenity Services Inc, CD Pits, Chase It Pet Toys, Chelsy's Toys, Christine Winship, Clarity Art and Design, Collar Crazy/Big Dog Spa, Collar Mania, Cynthia Eyler, Dakota Moon - Fine Adornment, Dawn Carroll, Demo Dog Jon Bozak, Devil Cat Art & Photography, Dog ID Collar, Dog Lovers Gift Basket, Doggie Style Designs/Amaroo USA LLC, Doggone Good!, Dogla, Dogs 'N' More, Dogswell , Dominic's Kitchen Store, Doodlesport/Vansant Creations, Drs. The Year Ahead: The PBRC team looks forward to the year ahead! PBRC’s Board of Directors extends it gratitude to PBRC’s loyal, dedicated and hardworking core of volunteers. We also extend our sincere thanks to our donors and supporters, without whom we could not continue to operate. The work of our volunteers and the generosity of our supporters allows us to continue to work toward our vision of a compassionate world where pit bulls and pit bull mixes reside in responsible, loving homes and where their honor and positive image is restored and preserved.
