Covey • Made to Stick by Chip Heath & Dan Heath • 12 leadership books to watch for in 2015 Tip: Buy the book you will enjoy reading (The Tipping Point – Gladwell) Step 2 – Honest • Always know that honesty is the best policy - Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) • Be honest about your skills • Tip: If you decide your skills are not as strong as they could be, do you give up? Don’t give up. When possible, adjust your style. Step 5 – Driven • If you want to be a leader, do it. • Director of Communications for Camus Services’ job is to tell the Campus Services’ story. 1. Parking & Transportation Services 9. Student Center Tip: Keep on keeping on Step 6 – Courageous • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – By Stephen R. Covey – “Many people think either/or. If you’re nice, you’re not tough. It’s important to be nice and courageous.” Tip: “High courage and consideration are both essential…It is the balance that is the mark of real maturity…” – Covey Remember to treat others like you would like to be treated not like you’ve been treated. Step 7 – CNB Seen • Put yourself where leaders are. – SGA Rep (Student Government Assn.) – RHA Committee Chair (Residence Hall Assn.) Tip: Join groups that you like. Ask what is needed and fill that position, i.e., committee member = committee chair = board member = officer Step 8 – Volunteer • If you don’t have a job, a group, volunteer, i.e., volunteer for groups like the Earth Day committee Tip: You can volunteer for both oncampus and off-campus, in your major and out of your major. Remember what interests you. I’ve volunteered at Earth Day. Step 9 – Interests • What do you like to do? • What is your major? Tip: Being part of a committee/group, gives you the opportunity to share talents you might not otherwise use in your everyday job or major. Usually, this group will appreciate you sometimes more than you everyday job or major. Step 10 – Professional • Research professional organizations. • And, whenever you can, join a professional association. Tip: Being part of a professional organization will jump-start your leadership skills.
