Alta High Marching Band 2014-15 DRUMLINE AUDITION PACKET Open Clinic: February 14th, 3-5pm Alta Band Room Audition: March 7th, 3pm Alta Band Room Congratulations on trying out for the Alta High Drumline! After a hugely successful first season, we’re ready to make another statement this year as we perform and compete around the state. Get ready to rock! Auditions for the drumline will take place on March 7th starting at 3pm. There will also be a clinic on February 14th from 3-5pm to go over technique and skills to work on for the audition. Both the clinic and the audition will be in the Alta High Band room. Here are some important points to remember: 
The audition is made up of three parts: 1) Solo Exercises, 2) Group Warm-‐ups, and 3) Solo Etude o Solo Exercises: Two basic exercises will be preformed alone in front of a judging panel to see your execution and technique. o Group Warm-ups: These include four exercises you will play on the drums with a full line. Be prepared to switch around instruments on audition day. o Solo Etude: One basic etude will be preformed on a snare drum in front of a judging panel to listen to your timing and musicality. 
All players who audition (snare, tenor, or bass) should attempt the audition etude. 
You may play the exercises with traditional or matched grip (whatever is most comfortable). However, we ask that you use traditional grip if you would like to be considered for the snare section. 
The tenor excerpt consists of a movement exercise that will demonstrate your basic ability to move around the drums. Play this if you would like to be considered for the tenor section. If you have more experience on tenors, you are welcome to include some solo work or more advanced exercises. 
Remember: It is not required to play all of the enclosed material for an audition. Do the best you can on as much as you can.  If you have prepared another solo or etude that demonstrates your abilities, feel free to prepare that as well. As you prepare for your audition, here are helpful tips to consider: • The focus of the audition will be on fundamentals of drumming. That means clean technique and solid timing. • Make a special effort to make a clear distinction between your accents and taps. • If it comes to speed vs. accuracy, go with accuracy! It’s better to play an exercise slow and correct than fast and sloppy. Being part of a drumline takes a great deal of work and dedication. But with all the effort that goes into it, the payoff is huge. Thanks for being willing to audition for the Alta Drumline. We’re looking forward to another great year! Happy drumming, Nate Haines Drumline Instructor Be prepared to play both of these exercises alone for your audition.
