WELCOME TO ST. LUKE • River Forest, IL 60305-1835
Adele Lillian Adams
If it does not please you to serve the Lord,
decide today whom you will serve…. As for
me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
~Joshua 24:15
When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be
willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord.
A partner is a person who invests their time, talent,
and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must
actually do something and not merely talk about it!

This is the last weekend for St. Luke’s collection of
school supplies at all Masses for Catholic Charities’
West Suburban Services Health Fair.
The August 29th Health Fair
provides medical exams and
school supplies for families in
need. Requested items include
new backpacks, pens, pencils,
notebooks, glue, scissors,
paper, rulers, folders, crayons,
and markers. Please deposit
your donations in the bins in the back of church.
Volunteers are also needed to help with the set-up
and operations at the event. To learn more about the
Health Fair or to volunteer, contact Esmeralda at
708-329-4022. Thank you for your generosity!
All are invited to a special Mass at 2:15 pm today
(Sunday) celebrated by Archbishop Blase Cupich at
Holy Name Cathedral.
At this Mass, the Apostolic
Nuncio to the United States,
Archbishop Carlo Maria
Viganò, will invest Archbishop
Cupich with the pallium that
Pope Francis blessed at the
Vatican on June 29.
The pallium is an important
symbol of the office as the Archbishop of Chicago.
Archbishop Cupich will greet the faithful after the Mass
until 4:30 p.m. This event is open to the public and no
tickets are needed.
All Religious Education families are invited to Book
Pick-Up Sunday on August 30. Please join us in
Waldron Hall after the 9:00 am Mass. Enjoy some
refreshments, pick up your children’s books, pay
tuition, and meet the catechists from 10:00 am to
noon. We all look forward to a wonderful year!
Classes begin on Wednesday, September 9.
~Sister Colleen Nolan, OP,
Director of Religious Education
Fr. George Kintiba, SVD, of the Divine Word
Missionaries will be at all of our Masses next
weekend, August 29-30, as part of the Archdiocese’s
Mission Co-op Program. He will be describing some
of the work of the Divine Word Missionaries, which is
an international community of
priests and brothers with more
than 6,000 members in 70
countries, including some right
here at the Chicago Province
House in Techny, Illinois.
Divine Word Missionaries
travel to the far corners of
the world where they build
hospitals to care for the sick, educate the poor, teach
the hungry to farm, and celebrate the sacraments.
They work to help the neglected and forgotten build
a better future while growing vibrant Catholic
communities of service and faith around the world.
This visit is part of the Mission Co-op Program of
our Archdiocese. Please be generous in the second
collection to help support missionaries like these
and others around the world.
The 2016 Mass Intention Book
will open tomorrow (Monday). To
schedule Masses, please complete a
Mass Intention Request Form (located in the racks
near all the church doors) and submit it with payment
by mail, in the collection basket, or through the mail
slot in the front door of the rectory.
Please list the dates and Mass times you are
requesting, the name(s) of the person(s) for whom the
Mass is requested, and whether they are living or
deceased. Be sure to list your name, address, and
phone number in case we have a question.
All requests will be taken in the order received.
Requests will not be taken by phone.
Five Masses per person will be scheduled initially.
Remaining requests will be scheduled on a rotating
basis to allow everyone an opportunity to get the
dates of their choice.
Please Note: Mass Intentions for weekday Masses
through the end of 2015 are also still being accepted
at the rectory or by calling 708-771-8250.

Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive
Since its inception by St. John Paul II in 1994, the
World Meeting of Families has strengthened the
sacred bonds of families across the globe. Sponsored
by the Pontifical Council for the Family every three
years, it is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of
families. Each gathering has a theme that energizes
and enlivens the event while adding great depth of
meaning to our understanding of families. This year’s
theme is “Love Is Our Mission: The
Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the
impact of the love and life of families
on our society. This meeting will
happen over the course of three days
– September 22-25 – in Philadelphia
and will be followed by the visit of
Pope Francis to the U.S. on September 26-27.
The World Meeting of Families Adult and Youth
Congress (September 22-25) offers families access to
the riches of Jesus’ teachings on marriage and family
life. We start with the fact that God made each of us
for a reason. The God we meet in Jesus Christ loves us
and calls us to love as he does. Marriage is the
sacrament that brings human fertility into this mission of
love. If we understand that love is our mission in our
marriages, families, and parishes, then we have
learned a basic truth that will shape many other areas
of life. For example, if fidelity to the covenant requires
restraint and perseverance, if our bodies and the
material world can be vessels of divine grace, then
Please remember in your prayers
these couples who are preparing to
receive the Sacrament of Marriage:
Arthur Lawrence and Barbara Bosco
Dominik Meyer and Emily Luchini
Efren Gutierrez and Jessica Huerta
Daniel Kaminski and Emily Mannix-Slobig
Nicholas Burjek and Katharine Burns

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE • River Forest, IL 60305-1835
we can approach questions of sexuality, ecology,
technology, and medicine with renewed commitment
and insight.
We now realize why a catechesis on the family has
actually been a catechesis for all of life. If we have
learned to think of our families as domestic churches, if
we have learned why moral individualism is not the
right context for receiving Catholic teaching, then we
have adopted a view that will reorient
our whole identity. This mission is not
reserved for the few or for the
extraordinary. Nor does it mean that
families somehow have to stop being
themselves or seek after some impossible
perfection in order to witness to the
Gospel. It may mean that we are sometimes minorities
in a secular culture that sees life differently. But the
Church has wide experience of many different cultural
contexts, offering wisdom and advice about spiritual
practices to sustain us.
Love is our origin and destiny, which is why only the
way of love can truly satisfy, and that is why Love is
Our Mission. The World Meeting of Families will offer
a wide variety of talks full of beautiful and enlivening
truths and practical ways to live them so that our
families can flourish and experience more joy.

Remember the 68 immigrant detainees held at the
McHenry County Jail and Kenosha Detention Center
this month who have asked for our prayers. They are
from Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ghana,
Great Britain, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria,
Panama, and Russia.
Pray that the outcomes will be positive for all of
the detainees and their families.
In the city of Chicago, the following people were killed
between August 7-13:
Michael Walton, age, 31 Demetrius Wooten, age 18
Torri Williams, age 17 Marquis Mitchell, age 32
Marlin Dixon III, age 20 Unknown man in his 20s
Ricardo C. Mendez-Bucio, age 18
May we keep their families and others touched by
violence in our prayers. May we also pray for the
perpetrators and the impact the violence will have
on their lives as well.

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE • River Forest, IL 60305-1835
If you or someone you know is feeling called to join
the Catholic Church, to receive the Sacraments of
Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation, or simply
to grow in your understanding of the Catholic faith,
St. Luke Parish invites you to participate in the
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
This process involves regular meetings over the next
eight months, culminating at the Easter Vigil next April.
Through this process, the Church welcomes converts
into our community, and provides baptized Catholics
an opportunity to return to more active participation in
the Church or to learn more about the Catholic faith.
For information about this process, please contact
Deacon Bob Slobig at 708-771-6430 or by email
at [email protected].
