Fourth Sunday of Easter
April 25, 2010
a brief gospel
seven short lines
about a shepherd
who knows, loves, protects his sheep
a single image
a thousand years in the making
a tribe of nomads
leading their flocks
from one watering hole to another
over the centuries
became convinced
that their paths were not random
but carefully planned
by One who had chosen them
guided them
watched with them through the night
strengthened by shepherd patriarchs
guided by shepherd leaders
championed by shepherd kings
they learned to address their Holy One
with all respect and tenderness
as the Shepherd of Israel
now the Son has come
to take his place beside the Father’s flock
has laid down his life to protect them
has picked it up again
to lead them home

Stewardship of Treasure
The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
—Acts 13:52
Because the disciples had heard Our Lord’s call, they were
able to spread the message of the Gospel with strength and
vitality. We, too, can experience that same joy if we take
time to listen to God, to ask for His direction and to allow the
Holy Spirit to guide our lives and our decisions.

Gather in Prayer and Service
Thank You, Father Leroy!
Today we honor Father Leroy Wickowski as he
retires this week after 44 years of faithful service as a
priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Ordained by Cardinal Cody on April 26, 1966,
Father Leroy’s first assignment was to St. Tarcissus
Parish (1966-1975). He then served at:
Holy Name Cathedral
St. Robert Bellarmine
Holy Family Villa
St. Giles
St. Luke
(1975-1988)
(Pastor, 1988-1994)
(1994-1996)
(1996-2005)
(2005-present)
Father Leroy has been greatly appreciated and
much beloved by the people of each of these parishes, and we are especially grateful for
his service to us at St. Luke’s during these past five years. He has been faithful and
generous in his priestly ministry.
Father Leroy will continue to reside at St. Luke Rectory in retirement. He will
continue to celebrate Sunday and weekday Masses for us at St. Luke’s, but he will have no
other parish duties. We are happy that he will still be with us.
Father Leroy, we thank God for your priestly ministry for all these 44 years, and we
ask the Lord’s abundant blessings on you during your retirement years. May you have good
health and much happiness.
Congratulations on your retirement!
Thank you!
May God bless you always!

First Communion Next Weekend
Town Hall Meeting in Waldron Hall
Next weekend at all the Masses except 7:30 AM we will
be celebrating the First Holy Communion of our Second
Graders. What a joy it is for us to share in this wonderful day
with the children and their parents and families.
May the Lord bless them and keep them always in His
loving care.
The St. Luke Board of Specified Jurisdiction invites all
school parents and interested parishioners to a Town Hall
Meeting on Tuesday, April 27, and Wednesday, April 28, at
7:00 PM in Waldron Hall. Topics discussed will include the
state of St. Luke School, tuition and budget for 2010-2011
and the future. Please plan on attending one of the nights.
Thank You for
Haitian Earthquake Relief
Farewell Events for Fr. Osric Banda
Catholic Relief Services has gratefully acknowledged the
receipt of the special collection for the Haiti earthquake.
St. Luke’s sent $9,178 for this purpose. Thank you for this
generosity. And let us continue to pray for the people of
Haiti as they continue to recover and rebuild after this
devastating event.
Holy Thursday Collection Helps Poor
Our Holy Thursday collection for the poor brought in $2,224.
As previously announced, 75% of this money ($1,668) has
been sent to Bonaventure House, a residential facility for
homeless persons living with HIV/AIDS sponsored by the
Alexian Brothers. The other 25% ($556) has gone to our
parish’s Needy Persons Fund for assistance to people in our
own community.
Thank you for this generosity for the poor.
Annual Appeal Update
Thank you for your response to the 2010 Annual Catholic
Appeal. Our parish goal this year is $63,383. To date, $57,251
has been pledged and $30,086 has been paid.
Thank you for your support of the Archdiocese’s ministries
and services.
Prayers for Our Military Personnel
As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, let us pray that
all our military personnel may be kept safe from harm and
return safely home to their loved ones.
We pray especially for Sgt. Sean M. Durkin, Spc. Joseph T.
Caron, Cpl. Michael D. Jankiewicz and Pfc. Jonathan D. Hall
who died recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. May they rest in
peace.
Let us pray that the leaders of our nation and of all nations
may work untiringly to end all war and violence and to build
a true and lasting peace among all peoples.

ST. LUKE Gather Us In
April 25, 2010 ♦ Fourth Sunday of Easter
Our visiting priest from Zambia, Fr. Osric Banda, is
completing his graduate studies at the Catholic Theological
Union in Chicago and will be returning home to Zambia on
May 25. We are grateful for his presence at St. Luke’s during
these past nine months and most especially for his leading
us in worship.
On Sunday, May 16, Father Osric will celebrate the 10:30 Mass,
and we will have a Farewell Reception in his honor in
Waldron Hall. Everyone is cordially invited to take this
opportunity to thank Father Osric personally and to wish
him well as he embarks upon his new assignment at the
seminary in his diocese.
Please save the date on your calendar.
Take the St. Francis Pledge
All across our country, Catholics are taking
the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation
and the Poor and joining the Catholic
Climate Covenant. The St. Francis Pledge
is a promise and a commitment by Catholic
individuals, families, parishes, organizations
and institutions to live our faith by protecting
God’s Creation and advocating on behalf of
people in poverty who face the harshest
impacts of global climate change. To join the
Covenant, you commit to act on each of
the five elements of the St. Francis Pledge.
The St. Francis Pledge
I/We Pledge to:
PRAY and reflect on the duty to care for God’s Creation
and protect the poor and vulnerable.
LEARN about and educate others on the causes and
moral dimensions of climate change.
ASSESS how we — as individuals and in our families,
parishes and other affiliations — contribute to climate
change by our own energy use, consumption, waste, etc.
ACT to change our choices and behaviors to reduce the
ways we contribute to climate change.
ADVOCATE for Catholic principles and priorities in
climate change discussions and decisions, especially
as they impact those who are poor and vulnerable.

Regarding Vatican Media Coverage
The issue of sexual abuse has once again been the focus of
much media coverage lately, including efforts to accuse
Pope Benedict of managerial neglect in his responsibilities,
past and present. Where lies the truth?
The Chicago Archdiocese has posted a number of excellent
articles and documents related to this matter on its website.
Go to www.archchicago.org and to Selected Articles
Regarding Recent Vatican Media Coverage. Of particular
note are the following:


“Keeping the Record Straight on Benedict and the
Crisis” by John L. Allen, Jr. (3/26/10)
“The Pope and the New York Times” by William McGurn

Prime Timers
The Prime Timers will be playing Bridge tomorrow, Monday,
in the Convent. We start at Noon and play until 3:00 PM.
Players at any level are welcome.
Tuesday, May 11, is the date for our visit to local historical
churches. We are staying close to home this time and will
be visiting West Suburban Temple Har Zion, a Jewish
synagogue at 1040 N. Harlem Avenue, River Forest, and
Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest. Of course, we will
have lunch at a local restaurant! We will leave from the
Convent at 10:15 AM and will carpool. Anne Canapary is
taking reservations, so please call her at 708-771-9221.
This is a good website to stay in touch with. Meanwhile, let us
keep Pope Benedict and the entire Church in our daily prayers.
