What Now My Love
!
Spring 2014 Pearcedale
Springtime to us at Tempo Two means one thing. The Iris are flowering. Well, since 1946 we have opened the
gardens to the public to view the Iris and this year we have decided not to open them again and slow down
a bit. - For 68 years, Barry has been doing this firstly with his parents and when they retired, with Lesley for
49 years, so we want to take time to smell the Iris a bit and see what we are really growing. Seasons in the
past we often missed lots of varieties flowering simply because there was no time to stop and look. We will
have more time to use the camera and make better detailed descriptions of the varieties we catalogue. Our
catalogue is our shop window and we enjoy making it the best we possibly can.
We are still growing Iris and will continue to produce a catalogue and sell rhizomes to anyone who wants to
grow some of these delightful plants, though the catalogue will more than likely become smaller as time goes
on. Our breeding program will continue for as long as we can still dig and replant, so we think that will be for
quite a time. We no longer catalogue Hostas as we have stopped growing them because of the work load.
We would like to thank all those people who have bought our Iris and Hostas and also those that took the
time to travel and visit us over the years. If it was not for Iris lovers who enjoyed our Iris, we would no longer
be producing a catalogue and possibly not breeding new Iris, so many thanks.
We continue to send many of our Iris overseas and although it is rewarding, it is becoming more and more
difficult and expensive with Government regulations both here and overseas increasing and charges
skyrocketing. This is why most small growers here and overseas will not export plants. It causes untold
problems and dissapointments to all concerned. More and more countries prohibit importation of plants or
create such a barrier with rules and regulations, that it can become impossible to comply with them.
Enyoy your spring as we no doubt will and we hope you find something in this very modern and up to date
collection of Bearded Iris. Happy Gardening.
Lesley & Barry
HOSTAS
As we phase out of our range of Hostas we have a few plants of some
varieties still available.
If you would like to receive a copy of this list,
please ask and we will forward it by return mail
CULTURAL NOTES FOR BEARDED IRIS
BEARDED IRIS LIKE.........
BEARDED IRIS DO NOT LIKE.......
1. Sunny for at least half the day, preferably afternoon sun.
2. Well drained. A must or they will rot.
3. Replanting immediately after flowering. December to January. However they
can be moved at any time but flowering can be disrupted.
4. Cover rhizomes in Australia with 1 to 3 cms of soil as a mulch. Do not leave
them exposed to the sun or they will scald.
5. Planting at least 35cm to 45cm apart.
6. Breaking up and replanting at least every 3 years for good quality and
quantity of bloom.
7. On planting use a balanced fertilizer that will last 3 to 9 months. Give a side
dressing of a balanced fertilizer in early spring.
8. Watering when replanted, then once established, a good soaking once every
week or two is sufficient.
9. Being kept free of weeds and competing ground cover.
10. Not having to compete with other perennials. It acts as shade and they
won’t flower well. Planting in a bed with Roses or on their own is ideal.
11. A good winter dressing of garden lime. Bearded Iris prefer a neutral to
slightly alkaline soil, although they do well in a slightly acid soil above pH6.
1. Shaded gardens, particularly heavy deciduous trees and shrubs. This stops
summer sun ripening the rhizomes for next year’s flowers.
2. Wet situations, particularly over winter. This will rot the roots and prevent growth
and flowering. If it is wet for a long time, the rhizomes can rot away.
3. Having their rhizomes exposed. This is OK for the northern hemisphere, but in
Australia it is too hot and rhizomes do not appreciate it. They get scalded.
4. Mulch of any type. This can cause rot as well as shade, preventing flowering.
5. Being crowded. Break up and replant every 2 to 3 years for consistent results.
6. Having rich, nitrogenous manures unless balanced with a phosphorus and
potassium fertilizer. Do not use just animal manure or blood and bone as it will make
lots of leaves and few flowers. It can also cause rot and severe leaf spot in summer.
7. Being overwatered. Soak well when watering then let be for 1 to 2 weeks in
summer.
8. Weed infestation or other plants crowding them. It acts as shade and prevents
flowering. Best planted on their own or well apart from other perennials.
9. Being grown in pots. Some varieties will fail if potted. Others struggle and never
reach their optimum size and quality. If they have to be potted for a short
transitional time, this is fine. If it is for all the year, use a large pot or tub at least 12”
(30cm) diameter. Use the best potting mix available and repot every year.
10. Having their foliage cut back each year. It will cause less flowering next season
Only cut it back when transplanting.
OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BEARDED IRIS.
Why won’t my Bearded Iris flower? This can be caused by a number of factors and usually a combination of more than one. Planting in too much shade. Overfeeding
with animal manure or blood and bone, or the reverse, no feeding of anything. Planting too deep. Cover only with 1 to 3 cms of soil. Planting so high that the rhizomes
are exposed to extreme sun and wind blowing them around. Also mulching with lawn clippings or other organic matter. Don’t mulch, it acts as shade and can cause them
to rot. A soil mulch is sufficient. Over or under watering can also cause problems. They need replanting every 2 to 3 years or overcrowded, starved Iris will not flower.
They are a bit like people. Give them a bit of room and ideal conditions and they will perform well.
When is the best time to replant my Iris? Best time is immediately after flowering; generally late November through til the end of January. They can be moved later but
next season’s flowering can be disrupted. If you have to move your Iris at another time, its ok but expect flowers to be smaller, or the stems tipping over in spring.
My Iris have changed colour or all gone white. Iris cannot change colour. Usually what occurs is they grow into one another and get mixed, then the wrong plant is
replanted. If you use weed killers such as Roundup near Iris, it can affect plants and cause flowers to go whiteish and contort. If they recover, the colour will return.
How long can Iris stay out of the ground? Ideally they should be planted immediately on lifting, but can be left in a cool dry place for several weeks.Keep the rhizomes
DRY, not moist as they will rot.
ABSOLUTE CUTE (Blyth 2014 Aust) M 25” Border Bearded.
The most delightful smaller Iris with standards of soft pink,
deepening to lilac at the midribs. The falls are lavender pink with
a rose pink overlay extending 2/3 of the way down the falls and
a fine white line running down from the white, tipped tangerine
beards. Flowers are wide, full and ruffled and neatly in proportion
on show stems. A slow increaser, typical of many Border Bearded
Iris. We love this. Fertility is difficult but will set seed. ((P168-A:

Amorous Heart) Sdlg No. S243-1
$50.00
BUSH HONEY (Blyth 2014 Aust) EM 36” A unique colour
combination. The standards are cream with blended and infused
deep violet midribs. Falls are a strange cream-grey with a light
mustard overlay coming about half way down and the petal
edges are a blend of the standard colour. Beards are mustard
over soft violet. Flowers are beautifully balanced, ruffled and
fluted. Plenty of buds and good show stems. Proving to be a
good parent. Lovely for floral art. (First Avenue X S213-1: Peal

AURA OF GLAMOUR (Blyth 2014 Aust) EM 38” Just about
a perfect show Iris. Superb branching with 3 or 4 flowers out at
once. What else would we expect coming from Head Over Heels.
And the colour is a complete self of lemon yellow including the
beards. Just look at the picture to see the form and those ruffles.
Lovely! (Head Over Heels X (S118-1: Oxford Countess x Upper

$50.00
BRUSHWORK (Blyth 2014 Aust) E-M 36” A stunning plicata that
continues to entrance us whenever we see it. Standards are soft
beige with just a hint of lavender veining. Falls are white with a ¼”
edge of dotting and stitching, deepening slightly at the hafts. There
are a few vertical lines going partially down the falls. Beards are old
gold to bronze. Flowers are so wide and lightly ruffled. Show stems.
Not a rapid increaser but makes good plants. It is an interesting Iris
genetically because neither parent is a plicata, yet plicatas show up
way back in the pedigrees of both sides. Another Woman has given
us some good plicatas. Brushwork has given lovely seedlings, both
plicatas and non plicatas and is also a super grandparent. (Another

CHOCOLATIER (Blyth 2014 Aust) L-VL
35” Right at the end of the season comes
this delightful brown Iris. There have
not been many modern true brown Iris
introduced for a while and although we do
not make crosses for them sometimes they
show up in a cross as this one has when
we were making crosses for blue bearded
pink amoenas. Where did we go wrong?
This one has chocolate brown standards
and plush chocolate brown falls. Beards
are bronze. The picture tells it all. It will
set pods but no seedlings have flowered
from it so far. Good branching. (Ginger
Ice X Fortunate Son) Sdlg No. T125-2
$75.00
DANCE WITH DRAGONS (Blyth 2014 Aust) E 40” We always
thought that one day we could have a pink amoena with blue
beards and this is the most recent introduction from that line of
thought, though far from achieving the goal, but never the less a
fascinating Iris. Standards are mushroom-beige and the falls are
rosy violet blended more rose each side of the beards. Beards
are a very striking black brown. Huge blooms and a strong
grower. Makes show stems and is fertile. (Enter The Dragon X
Chocolates And Silk) Sdlg No T122-1

COLOURS OF THE WIND (Blyth 2014 Aust)
EM 34” A true amoena with no other colour
in the standards but white. Falls have layers
of colour, the base colour is cream with an
apricot beige layer over it and a further layer
of dots and veining of light violet. It is lighter
around the beards and more apricot at the
hafts. Beards are vivid red. Full ruffled flowers
with show stems and a super grower. It is fertile
but virtually untried. (Stylish Edge X (T315-A;

DASH OF BURGUNDY (Blyth 2014

with more magenta towards centre.
Hafts are rich brown and beards are rich

DIAMOND BROKER (Blyth 2014 Aust) EM 36” One of the
loveliest Iris we have in the garden, no doubt due to its parent
Magical. It has proven for us to be a stunning parent. The
standards are light lemon cream, becoming lighter towards the
¼” frilly lemon edge. Style crests show well and are frilly lemon
yellow. Falls are creamy white with a ¼” lemon cream edge,
mostly at the fall bottom. Hafts are lemon yellow and the golden
beards set the flower off. Abundant buds and superb show stems.
Pedigree has a bit of everything, Plicata, amoena and exquisite
pastels. So far, not a lot of seedlings have flowered from it but they
will over the coming years and we expect some winners. (T3341: (O211-A: (L94-1: Ostentatious x (G48-5: Burst x Epicenter)) x

TRULY KISSED (Blyth 2014 Aust) M 35” This colour pattern is
fairly new to the Iris world and has been improved very quickly in

a wide ¾” band of blue violet completely around each one. Beards

RHIZOME ABOVE THE GROUND OR BELOW?
For Australian conditions we recommend covering the
rhizome with a cm of soil to prevent rhizomes from being
scalded by the summer sun. It literally eats a crater in
the rhizome thus reducing the starch (food) for next
year’s flower. Most gardening magazine advice is taken
from northern hemisphere literature on the subject
and rhizomes are left exposed in those countries. Our
summer sun is too fierce here.

We are often asked this question and the
answer is a resounding NO! with the one
qualification: weed killers, when sprayed, can
drift onto a plant and the flowers can fade or
have white edges to some extent and become
malformed. They usually recover from this
and flower the next season if not resprayed.
Another thing that happens is that the Irises
grow vigorously and this causes them to
intermingle and some varieties get smothered
and will not flower that year. In our extensive
experience over the past 50 years, we have
never once seen or heard of an Iris changing colour of its own accord. If they could
change colour then the Iris nurseries would
not be in business!

These fabulous Iris come from a range of species mostly from the Middle East. They have been hybridized with Tall Bearded Iris so we now have
plants that are more suitable to our climate. They prefer a well-drained and sunny position and love a bit of extra lime around them during winter.
They have rather scruffy foliage that tends to die down over summer although with extensive hybridizing we are getting better foliage. Try your hand
and see how you can improve the colour and pattern range yourself.

On the left are some almost ripe Dwarf Iris seed pods. You could try crossing your
own Dwarf Iris flowers and producing your own seedlings. You can cross Dwarf Iris
with Tall Bearded Iris and produce Median Iris. You can cross a Dwarf with a Dwarf
and produce more Dwarf Iris. They won’t all be good but you may find something you
love amongst the offspring. Give it a go. Remember to record your cross on a tag
and tie it to the stem as you cross.

We are regularly asked about the type of marking pencils we use on our Iris field labels. Well, they
are Stabilo Graphite 8008 Aquarellable and we have some for sale here.
Pencils are $5.00 each, posted. We’ve found them to have been the best lasting yet on plastic
labels and painted venetian blinds. (We cut old ones up into 8” lengths and use them in the field)
WHERE ARE THEY?
Several varieties sold out last year, or the year before and have been rested from this catalogue
while we increase the stock. To save you asking they are:
BUTTERFLY AFFAIR, CHASING DESTINY, COLOUR BAZAAR, FIRST AVENUE, GATEKEEPER,
GIRL’S GOT RHYTHM, HELLO BEAUTIFUL, TIMELY KISS and TOUCH OF GOSSIP.

HYBRIDIZING - “DISTRACTIONS”
Hybridizing
When I began seriously hybridizing Iris my aim was to improve Bicolours and Ameonas, (Amoenas have white standards and
coloured falls). I knew it was a fairly narrow field to work with, particularly at the time, over 50 years ago. At that time neither
pattern was particularly well established in a quality equal to the other self colours and plicatas that were so well known and grown
throughout the world. I knew that even with the main plan as it went forward, I would be distracted every spring with my wondering
what would happen if I crossed this with that or that with something else and inevitably many crosses have been made over the
years that have no relationship to my main aims. These crosses for want of a better word, I call “Distractions” They are essential
for peace of mind and to satisfy my curiosity. Along the way I also learnt much useful information about hybridizing and what does
happen when this is crossed with that. I tried crossing everything, Arilbreds, Dwarfs, Spurias, Siberians and just about anything else
that was an Iris as well as numerous other types of plants such as Dahlias and Daylilies.
In my day to day communications with budding hybridizers and people who just want to dabble, the questions that are mainly asked
are: 1.Which colours are dominant? 2. How can I get this colour pattern or a different beard on that colour? 3. What will give the
fastest (good) results with just a few crosses?
I think 50 years ago it was a lot easier to answer the question of definable dominance such as when a blue Iris was crossed with a
yellow one for instance. Usually we could be fairly certain that the resulting first generation would be fairly “dirty” mix of colours. Or
if you crossed a blue with a pink, the results would have been all blues and whites, no pinks, and so on. Today however because of
25 or more generations of mixing things up since then, we can no longer give a definite answer and usually now I suggest the only
way to be sure is to make the cross and see what happens. The segregation can be amazing because of the tetraploid nature of
Tall Bearded Iris and the very complex pedigrees of today’s modern varieties. Check out what a tetraploid plant is on google. It is
complicated.
The third most common query “How can I get the most varied (and fun) results from a small back yard area” My answer is usually
by crossing plicatas either together or crossing a plicata with another variety that has some background plicata in its pedigree even
if it shows no plicata traits when looked at in the garden. Plicatas are recessive, so unless there are plicata factors on both sides of
the cross, no plicatas will result from a first generation cross. If there are plicata factors on both sides of the pedigree, all manner of
variation can show in the first generation of seedlings, this is why it is fun and a fairly good and consistent range of seedlings can
result in one or two generations.
With so many lovely Iris appearing every year from many hybridizers, it is always difficult to mention any “Distractive” crosses to
make. As a result I have a few personal parameters. Firstly, if someone who knows something about breeding Iris recommends a
variety as being a good parent for them, then I will try using it to see where it will take me. Secondly, if I like the look of a variety and
it has no direct relevance to my immediate breeding program, I look at its pedigree and see if it has some proven parents that could
give some promising results. Remember, in selecting seedlings for further evaluation, they should be at least as good as anything
in commerce and preferably better. Also they should have if possible something better in colour, form and growth characteristics.
The other main reason for selecting seedlings for saving that maybe are lacking some necessary factor such as good branching,
would be to carry the line onto a second generation and see if it shows up in the F2. (See the seedlings from the cross X268 on
page 60) Don’t go crazy on selections though if your space is limited because, remember, next year there will be more selections
and also they increase and use up all the space.
I am in the very fortunate position of having available a very up to date collection of the best Iris available to use in hybridizing
as well as being able to make crosses each northern Spring in the garden of Keith Keppel, using his best varieties as well as his
advanced seedlings. Also the latest introductions of many other notable hybridizers such as Joe Ghio, Thomas Johnson, Paul Black
and many, many more, without having to go to the expensive and time factor of importing them into Australia before using them.
Keep in mind also that many introductions from other hybridizers may not have been used at all by the hybridizer or if at all by
anyone, and maybe only to test its fertility. This is certainly true for many of my introductions.
With this in mind I use another factor to choose the Iris I want to cross together. If I did not set some limits, I would have thousands
and thousands of seed and seedlings and nowhere to plant them, let alone assess the seedlings if I could grow them all. This factor
I call “Twichy Fingers” If I look at an Iris and I like it, my mind automatically goes to “do I want to cross it?”, and if my fingers are
twitching with some tweezers, then it is on my list to be crossed. I must say as I get older, there are less and less “Twichy Finges”
varieties as it means so much work, but usually enough suitable candidates show themselves to become pod or pollen subjects.
One of the best results in the last 3 or 4 years from “Twichy Fingers” I mentioned in last years hybridizing notes. That was using
Magical (Ghio) As soon as I saw it, it was “alive” and it has proven to be an
exceptional parent. Joe Ghio says that he has used it a little, but not to any
great extent. I see it used in one or two of his pedigrees. I also note that
Magical won a Wister Medal in 2014 in US, so that also says it is widely
accepted as a great Iris.
Another point to keep in mind when selecting parents is to use modern
advanced varieties. Othewise you will be repeating work that was done
many years ago by others and to be on the cutting edge, use the best
you can get and go forward with them, rather than crossing back to older
varieties.
With these 3 factors in mind, following are some results from making such
crosses.
(As a note to those people that may be interested in any of these
seedlings, they are just in the first stages of testing, so will be assessed
as time goes on. Most will not make the final cut. Of the named varieties,
Smart Money should be available in a couple of years. The others are
catalogued or have been in the past and are in general commerce)

Firstly the “TwitchyFingers” varieties. In this case, two “T.F” varieties. Also it shows the variability from using plicatas on both
sides of the cross and the result is 100% plicatas and there is a high proportion of good seedlings worth saving.
SORBONNE X PETTICOAT SHUFFLE (X148) Sorbonne is a fairly recent plicata from Keith
Keppel that I have admired since it was a new seedling. I have used it a few times because I have
liked it and I know it is a good parent. I think many people have used it in the last year or so.
Petticoat Shuffle is a recent Schreiner introduction that I liked as a seedling and you can see from
the stem with the 3 flowers out that it was a “Twitchy Fingers” seedling and I could not wait for it to
be available to use just for fun.
I think it is the best plicata that Schreiners have recently introduced. The 4 numbered selections
from this cross I thought were well worth saving and the 2 numbered “X” & “Y” were just used as
parents and discarded. Note that X148-X is an amoena plicata and that could open up another line
for hybridizing. (I resisted) There are quite a few seedlings from this cross yet to flower and will
flower in the spring of 2014.

The cross using Petticoat Shuffle as pod parent gave a similar result with 100% plicatas.
(X139) PETTICOAT SHUFFLE X KEPPEL 09-93A - 09-93A is from INK PATTERNS, a violet blue plicata from Thomas Johnson x
a complex Keppel plicata seedling. I thought the seedlings were OK but may not be any better than varieties already in commerce.
Also, the seedlings in the Sorbonne cross and the X138 cross were better quality if further crosses were to be made. I only made 3
or 4 crosses as time and space are always a consideration. If I were a plicata hybridizer, I would have made many more.

Hybridizing
X 138 - PETTICOAT SHUFFLE X KEPPEL O9-85D – 09-85D is Reckless Abandon x 07- 41E -07-41E is a very pretty small
flowered plicata that is also depicted here. Its pedigree is very complex plicata.
Here is a case of “Twitchy Fingers” crossed with a seedling that has a promising pedigree (09-85D) and is not a plicata but has
plicata sisters and has a rich plicata background as a parent. There were about 50% plicatas and a few fancies with a number of
rough bicolours among the seedlings that flowered. I tended to favour the plicatas and I was very happy with the selections made.
Again, more are to flower from the cross in the spring of 2014.

SMART MONEY X ROYAL HARLEQUIN
(X144) - Here are two varieties that had been
recommended as giving good seedlings,
though not crossed together previously
anywhere. I crossed them together and
although they gave a good range of colours
as can be seen in the image of the cross,
none were selected. Royal Harlequin is an
introduction of mine but I had not used it.
Two or 3 people have said they had good
results from it. So far it has not proved so
for me but then I have not combined the
two varieties together that gave others good
results.

GHOST WRITER X SMART
MONEY (X117) Here we have
Ghost Writer that I knew was a
good parent having seen seedlings
from it both in Australia and in US.
Also Smart Money from Joe Ghio
who had recommended it as a
good parent for him. Combining
the 2 varieties together, I was
more than pleased with the results.
Nice wide flowers, clear colours
and an amazing segregation of
colours. Quite unexpected results,
particularly with the amoenas as
when the complicated pedigrees
show up, the recessive patterns
in their backgrounds have a
chance to reveal themselves.
About half the cross of 20 plants were
discarded with several yet to flower.

AVENUE OF DREAMS X MY BELOVED (X103) Again, “twitchy fingers” (Avenue of Dreams) and a recommendation by the
breeder of My Beloved (Joe Ghio) as being a super parent, particularly for soft pastel shades. We certainly have some lovely
pastels, though whether they are standouts in a very crowded field of soft pastel Iris, I doubt. It will be fun to grow them for a couple
more years and observe them. The other negative factor here for me is this cross flowered very late, mid November, and we prefer
early to mid season varieties as late varieties can sometimes get cooked with the onset of an early summer.

O228-4 sdlg) X (V149-1: RECKLESS ABANDON x COTILLION GOWN SIB) Here we have plicatas aplenty (Burst, Epicenter,
Zestful Miss) Plicatas have also come from O228-4). V149-1 has mostly plicata sisters too. Then I added in O228-4. It is from
the pink amoena line and a super parent. This is using the “Twitchy Fingers” technique with a mystery unexplored plicata
(Zestful Miss) to see how they will segregate out and maybe get some bicolour and amoena plicatas. The grandparent O211-A
and the parent U356-1 both had very poor branching and bud count with maybe only 3 buds. However the other parents all
had lovely branching and all the 6 selected seedlings have good to extra branching. We wait to see how they perform this spring.
We particularly liked number 4 with the dark hafts.
