5th Annual Montana’s Premier Public Wine Event Whitefish Lake Keep it Blue! 2014 AUCTION CATALOG A benefit to support... Welcome to the 5th Annual Whitefish Wine Auction - Montana’s Premier Wine Event! We are delighted to host two evenings of extraordinary wines and exquisite cuisine featuring the blue water of Whitefish Lake as our backdrop. The Whitefish Wine Auction brings our community together to celebrate Whitefish Lake and to secure funding to “keep it blue.” Proceeds from this year’s event go toward the management of the Averill’s Viking Creek Wetland Preserve which is owned and managed by the Whitefish Lake Institute. The wetland preserve is an important kidney to Whitefish Lake and incredibly rich in biodiversity. In 2013, we opened the Living Wetlands Interpretive Nature Trail in the wetlands. I’m humbled by the generosity of the many wineries, distributors, auction items donors, corporate sponsors, and professionals that have donated to this year’s event - and thank you for your support by attending and bidding tonight! On behalf of the Whitefish Lake Institute board of directors, committees and staff, I invite you to enjoy the festivities. Environmental Scientist Dietrich Perchy—2014 Intern Proceeds from the Whitefish Wine Auction will support WLI’s Science, Education and Community Stewardship programs, including the ongoing work of the Living Wetlands Interpretive Nature Trail in the Averill’s Viking Creek Wetland Preserve which WLI owns and manages. The 28.82 acre wetland habitat across the street from The Lodge at Whitefish Lake offers outdoor education opportunities and a comfortable respite for people who live, work, and play in the area. Bordered to the north and east by the 215-acre Murdock Nature Conservancy Easement, the Preserve provides a large, contiguous area that protects water quality of Whitefish Lake and provides habitat for aquatic, terrestrial, and avian wildlife. Auction proceeds support the ongoing restoration, monitoring, and maintenance of the wetland, ensuring that the area receives the appropriate level of resource management. Please see page 46 for additional information about the trail. Elected in 2005 in a race that began with six candidates, he then ran unopposed and was re-elected in 2009. In that same year Engen battled the recession with the Best Place Project which produced the Missoula Economic Partnership, a private- and publiclyfunded economic development organization with the goal of bolstering Missoula’s economy. With his leadership team and capable City staff, Engen delivered balanced budgets to Council, continued to deliver important services to those who count on the city for clean, safe streets, fire and medical aid, permits and parks and much more. The popular mayor was again reelected in 2013. He passed an open-space bond for Missoula and worked with Missoula County to help ensure that important lands were protected for generations to come. Engen’s Affordable Housing Team worked tirelessly to achieve a affordable housing resolution, and under his direction, the City updated and reformed their antiquated zoning regulations. Mayor Engen was appointed to serve a three-year term on the state Gaming Advisory Council from 2010 to 2013; was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Montana League of Cities and Towns in 2010 to represent Missoula and other cities and towns in; and in 2011, appointed to the local executive board of The University of Montana. A Missoula native, Engen lives with his wife, Tracy in the Rattlesnake Valley with several rescued dogs and a bunch of fish. Before serving as mayor, Engen served as a City Council member, was an award-winning writer and editor for the city’s daily newspaper, owned and operated his own small business and volunteered for several nonprofit organizations. As an unpaid auctioneer and emcee, Engen has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to help friends and neighbors in his community. We are grateful that Mayor Engen has returned this year to help Whitefish “Keep it Blue!” Sommelier—Dan Vogel Dan Vogel’s director-level food and wine experience was honed through management positions in alcoholic beverage distributorships, restaurants, hotels, and educational institutions in Honolulu, Hawaii; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Spokane, Washington. The company is headed by Nelles’s grandson, Timothy Brocopp, who has stewarded over the company’s expansion into western Montana. The company began selling wine in 1979, after the state allowed for private distribution. Over that period, Intermountain has assembled an iconic portfolio of fine wines, both domestic and imported, helping the company provide excellent selection and service for our customers. Intermountain Distributing proudly supports local and national charities, and is a strong promoter of community involvement and the responsible use of their products. Drew returned to his hometown in 2007 to plant his estate vineyard, McQueen, in SeVein Vineyards of Distinction. In 2008 he launched Doubleback, an estate-focused winery with the goal to produce ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon. To make this dream a reality, Drew and his wife Maura collaborated with Drew’s childhood friend and Consulting Winemaker, Chris Figgins (Figgins Family Wine Estates), known for Leonetti Cellar and FIGGINS. Doubleback’s first release—the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon—made it to the Wine Spectators Top 100 List 2010. In early 2011, Drew acquired a second SeVein estate vineyard—named Bob Healy after his late father-in-la—to further the production of highquality fruit for Doubleback. The Bledsoe’s vision is to create a premium wine experience completely focused around quality, and are committed to using only the best viticulture and winemaking practices to ensure Doubleback is one of the best bottles of wine you drink. Join Drew and Maura as they pour their 2011 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon. With a gorgeous deep ruby color, the nose explodes with crushed and sautéed bramble fruit, crème brulee, and a dusting of allspice. The palate is long and sexy, with silk smooth tannin and a lovely background note of toasty French oak. The vibrant acid backbone cuts through its richness ending with a generously long finish. 2011 was a cool year, but the vineyard sources on the southern end of the Walla Walla Valley achieved optimum ripeness. Therefore, in a year when “generous” and “voluptuous” applies to very few wines produced in the greater Columbia Valley, the 2011 Doubleback is a rare exception! The quaint and charming Lincourt Vineyards is named for Bill's two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney, and the tasting room is housed in an old-fashioned 1926 Sears Craftsman kit home. The 2010 possesses all of the attributes one would expect from low-yielding, cool-climate terroir. The aromatics range from lemon curd and baking spices to grilled almonds and wet stone. The handsome stables have been refurbished to house the winery, with tremendous detail in the planning of a modern facility, while honoring age-old winemaking tradition. Package Value: $1648 Faust 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa,12-Bottle Case From the Foley Family Wines Portfolio The Story: Faust, the wine, celebrates a legend which has inspired many great minds, among them the German poet Goethe, from whose masterpiece Faust draws its inspiration. In Goethe’s most famous work, the aging scholar Dr. Faust barters his soul in the afterlife in exchange for another chance at youth. He gets his chance, yet ultimately his soul is saved by love. Faust is indeed the fruit of renewed passion for Agustin Huneeus, though Mephistopheles has not yet appeared to claim his soul. The underlying premise for all of his wines has been that great wines must be a reflection of a great vineyard. Faust is not. Instead, Faust is a tribute to Napa Valley’s noblest grape – full-bodied, decadently rich and unctuous Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wine: To express the complexity of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape and diversity of the Napa Valley, Faust uses Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Agustin’s family vineyards in Rutherford and Coombsville, Napa Valley's eastern foothills south of Atlas Peak. Agustin’s relationships with growers in Napa Valley appellations, such as Yountville, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, St. Helena and Rutherford, round out the wine with small lots from these spectacular mountain and valley terroirs. Faust is crafted at the state-of-the-art Quintessa winery in Rutherford. The grapes are hand-picked, double-sorted, gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel and French oak fermentation tanks. After cold-soak and fermentation, the must undergoes a maceration period of up to three weeks. Critical flavor, aroma and color compounds are extracted at this phase. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels for an aging period of 19 months. Value: $610 Steele Wines 2014 marks Jed Steele’s forty-sixth year of being involved in California winemaking. From his start as a cellar worker at Stony Hill in Napa Valley in 1968, to UC Davis for a Master’s Degree in Enology, to starting Edmeades in the Anderson Valley and being there for ten years, to then starting Kendall-Jackson and working there for the first nine vintages of that wildly successful winery, to the start of his own Steele Wines in 1991—it has been an incredible ride. During this time he has produced wines from just about every top quality wine region in California, from Santa Barbara to Mendocino. The line-up of vineyards which Steele either owns or from which they purchase grapes has evolved slowly over the years to now consistently draw on some of the finest vineyards in California. Steele specializes in wines with final bottling of less than 1,000 cases. This reflects their never ending fascination with many different varietals and vineyard locations, and allows them to maintain the practice of true craftsmanship in the production of small lot bottlings. The winning bidder will enjoy four extraordinary bottles of Steele wine including: 2011 Steele Merlot, 6 L Bottle This wine is a mouthful of pleasure: lots of fruit, medium tannins and a long lingering finish. Some cellar time is recommended for this wine if only to allow all of the great aromas and flavors properly meld. 2011 Out Kaste Red, 3 L Bottle A defiant, delicious red blend of several Lake County varietals. This wine stands alone! 53% zinfandel, 31% syrah, 6% tempranillo, 5% petite sirah, 5% petit verdot. 2011Steele Pinot Blanc, 3 L Bottle The fruit from the Bien Nacido Vineyard outside of Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County tends to have tropical fruit aromas and flavors, as well as peach and melon characteristics as well as the hallmark green apple character common in Pinot Blanc. The nose is aromatic with a soft and creamy mid-palate. 2011 Shooting Star Pinot Noir, 3 L Bottle The Lyon and Dorn vineyards are combined to provide perfect balance for this Pinot Noir. The Lyon provides structure and rose petal scents, with hints of tannins. The Dorn vineyard gives to the blend strawberry flavors and soft Noir. Value: $1450 Doubleback Chris Figgins and Drew Bledsoe go back many years, growing up a stone’s throw away from each other in Walla Walla some 400 yards from Leonetti Cellar. The two reconnected in early 2007 when Drew decided to enter the wine business and selected the world-class wine region and his home town of Walla Walla as his first choice. Chris was at the top of Drew’s list for a winemaker but was unsure of Chris’ interest outside of winemaking for Leonetti. The timing was very serendipitous as Chris had just started Figgins Enological and was looking for the perfect client for his first consulting collaboration. For more information about Doubleback, please see page 12. Having a very high respect for Drew, Chris took on Doubleback as his client in a business relationship that became official in the spring of 2007 just as Drew announced his retirement from the NFL. Chris assisted in the vineyard design and planting for McQueen, Drew’s estate vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley and he consults on all winemaking and viticulture practices. It is a true collaboration from dirt to bottle. 2007 Cabernet 1.5 L Bottle The 2007 Cabernet shows a deep, elegant ruby color in the glass. The nose exhibits attractive black cherry, plum and smoky meat elements. Damp earth, cedar and lilacs all come through with a subtle hint of cracked black pepper. Flavors of blueberry syrup and strawberries are present. The mouth-feel is extremely soft on the palette and the wine is very balanced with great acidity and subtle tannins. The finish is long and silky leaving you wanting another sip. The Bledsoe’s are very excited about this wine and look forward to sharing it with you. Value: $500 Doubleback 2008 Cabernet 1.5 L Bottle The 2008 Doubleback is a deep, elegant ruby color in the glass. The beautiful nose displays cherries, wet stones, dried meats and a hint of cinnamon. This vintage is remarkably well balanced on the palate. The approach is soft with very nice acidity. Cherries, strawberries, pomegranates, are all present, mixed with hints of mocha chocolate and cloves. The finish and mouth feel are lush and velvety making you long for your next sip. They are incredibly proud of the wine and how it is drinking but patience will pay off in a big way. They recommend opening your bottle of Doubleback in advance or performing the process of double decanting. Value: $500 Doubleback 2009 Cabernet 1.5 L Bottle As with our previous vintages, the 2009 shows a beautiful deep ruby color in the glass. The nose evolves dramatically after a couple of hours. Initially there are notes of dried fruits, strawberries and a hint of saddle leather. After about 90 minutes the aromas evolve and begin to show some high toned floral notes and red fruits. The juice is round and soft on the attack with nicely integrated tannins even in its youth. The ripe red fruit is balanced nicely by crisp acidity. With the deft touch of a true master, Chris Figgins captured the essence of this fantastic vintage in the 2009 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon. Please open at least a couple of hours before enjoying to allow this wine to show its true character. Value: $500 Chalk Hill 2010 Estate Red, Two 6-Bottle Cases From the Foley Family Wines Portfolio Since its founding in 1972 by famed attorney Fred Furth, Chalk Hill—an elegant, iconic wine estate producing world-class wines located in the Chalk Hill Appellation of Sonoma County—has been Sonoma County’s benchmark producer. For over three decades the winery has produced exceptional wines that have received high acclaim from the trade, press and consumers. Nowhere else will you find such transitional terroir: nestled atop the cooler Russian River Valley, just over the ridge from the warmer Alexander Valley. Among the estate’s ruggedly beautiful hillsides, a scant few hundred acres make up a patchwork of carefully nurtured vineyards which rest atop the rocky soil where the Russian River once meandered. Here, nature is joined by vineyard and cellar artisans to bring forth wines that reflect the character and richness of this special place. The 2010 Estate Red is incredibly rich and luscious. The nose is composed of opulent aromas including black cherry, blackberry, plum jam, Provencal herbs, vanilla, and pipe tobacco. The flavors are equally lush with additional notes of spicy oak, vanilla, blueberry pie, and bittersweet chocolate. Although the wine shows surprisingly well in its youth, the generous, underlying tannins suggest a long and complex future. Value: $1020 Altvs 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, 12-Bottle Case From the Foley Family Wines Portfolio Altvs is a project begun with the 2005 vintage at Merus winery in the Napa Valley. The idea: to produce hand crafted, small lot Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines that celebrate the hedonistic qualities of lushness, density and ripeness while remaining true to the intensity and power of modern day Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. In a very short time since its initial release, Altvs has captured the imagination of an international audience, garnering critical acclaim through the world of fine wine. The 2009 Altvs is opaque and highly aromatic with notes of dark fruit, leather, spice and licorice. The palate features all of the above plus cocoa, berries and graham crackers. The tannins are present, but integrated. This is bold wine with well-integrated tannins and great potential. Value: $896 Harlan Estate 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Donated from the Private Cellar of Dan Averill A very rare offering of a privately cellared and profoundly great wine. It came across in a blind tasting as one of the most remarkable wines with most tasters mistaking it for a first -growth Medoc. The wine revealed an opaque purple color a fabulously complex sweet nose of minerals fruitcake cedar toasty new oak and pure blackcurrant fruit. Although huge in the mouth the wine is remarkably wellbalanced with its high tannin level well-concealed by copious quantities of sweet ripe fruit as well as huge amounts of glycerin and extract. Robert Parker has consistently rated the 1991 Harlan Estate in the mid to upper nineties but in this blind tasting with so many high quality wines it was a big-time winner. “Should be at its best by the turn of the century and last for 2-3 decades.” Value: $1250 Rob Akey Art Original 30” x 24” Oil Painting “A Day at the Lake” Born a second generation Whitefish, Montana native in 1956, Rob Akey displayed an early propensity for drawing and painting. In the fall of 2005, after a lifetime of honing his skills and refining his work, Rob achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist. "I've been studying the American Impressionists, a genre curiously absent from most art history curriculum. The influence and benefit to my work has been significant. Therefore, they have established long-term relationships with only those winegrowers willing to work within the parameters of their rigorous vineyard demands. Sebastiani 2008 Cherry Block Cabernet, 6-Bottle Case From the Foley Family Wines Portfolio Bill Foley purchased Sebastiani in 2008 and immediately took a number of steps to enhance wine quality and raise the winery’s image. Working closely with winemaker Mark Lyon and the viticultural team, Bill lowered production, restricted yields, acquired new barrels and winemaking equipment, revamped farming protocols and acquired additional vineyards to guarantee consistent and superior fruit sourcing. The winery now makes the finest wines in its long history with emphasis on single-vineyard and sub-appellation wines. An important part of the Sonoma County community for more than 100 years, Sebastiani Vineyards are long-term practitioners of sustainable farming, and they work with the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance to ensure all aspects of the business are gentle on the environment. Cherry Block is the flagship wine at Sebastiani—the ultimate interpretation of Sonoma Valley Cabernet based on growing on volcanic soils. While the core of the Cabernet comes from both the original old-vine block of estate Cabernet and younger vines, small amounts of fruit from other Sonoma sites are now included. The result is a more complete and compelling wine that epitomizes the elegance, structure and graphite, terroir aromatics unique to Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. While the 300+ acres of vineyards surrounding the winery will always be the cornerstone of their identity, starting with the 2012 vintage, they started producing their first Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The wine comes from extraordinary vineyards throughout Sonoma County consisting primarily of Foley Family Estate Vineyards. This Pinot Noir features fruit from some of the best sites in Carneros, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Valley, and Sonoma Coast. In 2005 the Blacks purchased the Doe Ridge property in Yamhill Carlton to continue growing the brand. They chose a site in a differing appellation to add complexity and variety. This vineyard has been turned into one of the largest experiments of its kind with twenty acres farmed biodynamically and twenty acres farmed sustainably through the Low Impact Viticulture and Enology (LIVE) program. Today The Four Graces produces pinot noir, pinot gris, and pinot blanc renowned nationally and internationally for their balance, elegance, complexity, and richness. Wine critic Robert Parker awarded those early efforts near-perfect ratings of 98 and 99 points, which quickly catapulted Schug and Phelps to international fame. This classic Carneros region Pinot Noir offers a wide range of flavors and aromas, in the tradition of the finest red Burgundies of France. AVERILL'S VIKING CREEK WETLAND PRESERVE LIVING WETLANDS INTERPRETIVE NATURE TRAIL The Averill’s Viking Creek Wetland Preserve has enabled WLI to protect in perpetuity 28.8 acres of important watercleansing wetlands and wildlife habitat from development. The primary function of this wetland area is flood attenuation and water quality buffering, while providing diverse wildlife habitat in an urban setting. Since the streams and groundwater of the area drain directly into Whitefish Lake, water quality buffering is vitally important. An Outdoor Classroom A series of interpretive trail signs and companion Trail Guide lead visitors to explore the many interesting natural features of the wetland and encourage sustainable visitor interaction within the wetland surroundings. The main trailhead kiosk contains information about the wetland’s natural and cultural history, and the usage and safety rules. There are two satellite trailheads near the Viking Lodge and at Crestwood Park to provide ingress and egress options while highlighting unique area attributes like the restoration area near the Viking Lodge and the mature aspen stand near Crestwood Park. With such close proximity to town, preschool, elementary, middle school, high school and college students—in particular those studying natural resources and biological sciences are enyoying this outdoor classroom. WLI partners with high school classes to conduct field trips and research, hosts several hundred wetland visitors annually as part of the Road Scholar/Elderhostel senior programs. An important educational component of the project addresses how—through an open dialogue between diverse constituencies—a solution was created to allow economic expansion while providing natural resource protection. It is an appealing site for specialty groups such as bird watching groups, wildlife biologists, plant biologists, wetland biologists, botanists, hydrologists, and natural resource managers. The trail is wheelchair friendly easing visitor access. WLI License Plates Support Water Quality!! Montana drivers can choose from a number of license plates, ranging from the standard plate to designs that reflect their support for special organizations and places. Your purchase of a Whitefish Lake Institute plate will provide you with a beautiful license plate and will support the only organization that’s sole purpose is protecting Whitefish Lake. The health of Whitefish Lake directly affects public health, economic strength, and promotes a valued recreational opportunity for residents and guests. Part of the larger Flathead Watershed, Whitefish Lake is an important resource within and beyond the boundaries of Montana. Water from Whitefish Lake drains to Flathead Lake, which then flows to the Columbia River Basin and toward the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 2005, the Whitefish Lake Institute is committed to protecting and improving the Whitefish area lake resources of today, while providing a collective vision for tomorrow. By purchasing a specialty plate, you’ll be supporting our work to keep Whitefish Lake clean, while strengthening our community. The popularity of Whitefish Lake for summer and winter activities put many pressures on water quality. You’ll be helping us maintain and improve the lake while encouraging education and sustaining important scientific research. Contact your county motor vehicle department and ask to purchase this specialty plate. The Flathead County Department of Motor Vehicles can be reached at 406.758.5690 or http://flathead.mt.gov/dmv/. Click on “View Plates” and you will be directed to the Montana Department of Justice. Click on “Parks & Environment” and scroll down to Whitefish Lake Institute. The plates are $25. Your county treasurer will charge an additional one-time fee ($20) to cover administrative costs at the time of purchase. The plate will be automatically renewed each subsequent year after purchase. You do not need to wait until your annual registration renewal date. You can purchase the plate at any time, including when renewing your registration. This specialty plate may be used on any registered vehicle with the exception of trailers, motorcycles and ATVs. What We Do The Whitefish Lake Institute (WLI) is a science and education based 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation led by a volunteer board of directors and assisted by two volunteer committees—the Science Advisory Committee and Citizens' Advisory Committee. WLI is not an advocacy organization—we conduct research and provide scientific data. WLI accomplishes its work through three key focus areas, Scientific Research, Education & Outreach, and Community Stewardship. Within these focus areas, we establish programs appropriate to achieving the goals of our mission. WLI is funded by a broad base of members, research and education grants, special events, and through programmatic partnerships with other organizations and resource agencies. Together, we're investing in our future. How We Do It WLI partners with other organizations to creatively fund research and develop programs that benefit Whitefish Lake and other local water resources. Data from our Scientific Research programs is provided to the community and resource managers to enable them to make informed decisions about water quality issues. WLI focuses most of its research work on Whitefish Lake and its tributaries, but also researches other lakes—through special project funding— in Flathead, Lake and Lincoln Counties. Efforts through our Education & Outreach program include classroom visits to grades K-12, in-house college internships, educator in-service training, presentations to civic groups, and Road Scholar programs for seniors. Through our Citizen Stewardship Program, community members participate in activities that protect Whitefish Lake and its tributaries, and WLI participates in community groups and efforts that extend our reach. Collectively, these programs allow us to reach almost 1000 citizens of all ages annually. WLI also trains volunteer citizen scientists in monitoring lakes through the Northwest Montana Lakes Volunteer Monitoring Network (NWMTLVMN). Volunteers contributed over 1000 hours to the program annually.
