Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore Leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our community together we can solve hunger™ 2013 Annual Report 251,676 meals and 147,799 snacks 52,259 BackPacks (261,295 meals) distributed to nearly 3,000 children served through Kids Cafes at 49 elementary schools through the BackPack Program 2 Dear Foodbank Friends, What does it take to get a meal on the table? In your home, it may go something like this - decide what you are in the mood for, find the right recipe, visit the grocery store, purchase the necessary items, prepare the meal, serve and enjoy. Here at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, the process of putting food on a table looks quite a bit different, but one essential ingredient remains the same - you. This past year, we served hundreds of thousands of our neighbors providing food to sustain themselves and their families. But we did not do it alone. You made it possible by your gifts of time, food and funds. Your support allowed us to work alongside more than 400 Partner Agencies and Programs – food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens, Mobile Pantries, Kids Cafes and BackPack sites. Together, we were able to touch the lives of Virginians in every county and city in the region providing them with nutritious food, hope and dignity. While we can measure the impact of the Foodbank in meals delivered and numbers of clients served, nothing can measure what it means to help everyday people take control of their lives. For these individuals and families, hope is a hot meal, a bag of groceries, a well-nourished child. Without your investment last year, we would not have been able to impact the lives of so many. There is no simple recipe for providing 14.2 million meals over the course of a year, but we are always working to increase our efficiency, capacity, and network of community supporters as we lead the effort to eliminate hunger in our community. We thank you for your contributions and remind you that together, we can solve hunger. Sincerely, Joanne E. Batson Chief Executive Officer Kenneth J. Thomas Board of Directors, President 3 Hunger in America From April to August, 2013, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore staff and volunteers visited 93 Partner Agencies and conducted surveys with 437 participants for the Hunger in America 2014 Study. The vital data from the study will guide our future decisions surrounding the operation of efficiently getting food to those in need. The Foodbank’s Hunger Study Coordinator, Chelsea Benetz, recorded some of her observations throughout the five month survey process, and shared this story: While visiting St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Suffolk, a young woman in her early thirties participated in the survey that was currently homebound because of a disorder involving seizures. She was living with her parents, and together they were finding a way to make ends meet, which is what had brought her to the church’s pantry. She shared her story with tears in her eyes and thanked us for the chance to take the survey, and answer these tough questions in hopes to find real solutions. Meanwhile, another woman who was also taking the survey overheard the conversation and rose from her chair to encourage her saying, “Don’t you give up, now. Don’t give up.” Although results from the study won’t be available until early 2014, the experience of conducting the surveys gave us a real glimpse into the lives of those we are serving alongside our wonderful Partner Agencies. With the support of donors like you, we are truly making strides in the effort to solve hunger. 1 in 7 individuals are food insecure in Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore 4 turning hunger into hope 5 Over 6,200 volunteers gave over 41,000 hours in FY2013 Volunteers Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Foodbank, doing everything from inspecting and sorting donated items, to packing bags for the BackPack and Mobile Pantry programs. Our incredible Volunteer Team Leaders donate time monthly, some even weekly or daily, to lead other volunteers in warehouse activities and also help by working at Foodbank events. The time our volunteers donate is a significant part of why we were able to distribute more than 14.2 million meals last year and demonstrates that together, we can solve hunger in our region. The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore was selected by VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads to receive the 2013 Volunteer Achievement Award in the Nonprofit Volunteer Program category. It’s just another testament to our incredible volunteers that give so generously of their time and talents for the children, seniors and families who are struggling with hunger in our area. “We have the best volunteers! They are the key to making our work possible, allowing us to make a greater impact and be more efficient in distributing food to those in need. Volunteering with the Foodbank is fun, and volunteers are vital to the process for caring for our community.” Mr. Jan Cline, Volunteer Manager 6 helping make hunger disappear 7 = $60 A $10 donation allows the Foodbank to distribute up to $60 worth of grocery items Healthy Mobile Pantry Program Fiscal year 2013 saw the successful launch of the Foodbank’s Healthy Mobile Pantry Program through partnerships with organizations such as the Obici Healthcare Foundation and the National Dairy Council. This pilot began with the realization that there is a real need, particularly in the city of Suffolk, for increased access to healthy foods to minimize the risks of diet-related diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Distributing a mix of low-sodium, low-sugar, whole grain items, with fresh produce and lean meat, customers are also engaged in dialogue about nutrition, quarterly tastings, and provided healthy recipes to try at home. The program represents a significant investment by the Foodbank to provide nutritious options to customers, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. With the pilot receiving excellent feedback from customers and the community, a similar program is planned to be added in Portsmouth in 2014. Over 952,000 meals distributed through Mobile Pantries Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore 8 Farmer’s Initiative Maintaining health and proper nutrition can be a daily struggle for those experiencing hunger. Some 6 billion pounds of fresh produce goes uneaten in America each year—making this an area with great potential for food banks nationwide. Last year, the Foodbank distributed over 4.6 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. We work with local farmers to either buy this product or have it donated, as well as work with organizations that will harvest the crops. This collaboration prevents perfectly edible food from being wasted. The Foodbank and its more than 400 Partner Agencies and Programs then distribute these healthy items to the individuals that need this highly nutritious food. Types of fresh produce distributed last year included potatoes, apples, onions, sweet potatoes, carrots, cabbage, bananas, melons, oranges and corn. Over 4.6 million pounds of fresh produce distributed in FY13 9 Eastern Shore Our Eastern Shore Branch’s Community Garden continued to bloom this past year with a productive second summer bumper crop. More than 6,000 pounds of nutritious vegetables such as green beans, collards, and tomatoes were planted and harvested. Our garden expanded from 10 raised beds to 20 and a hoop house was erected to allow for a longer growing season and more productive plants. The delicious vegetables grown were distributed to 25 of the Eastern Shore’s Partner Agencies and then given to local children, senior citizens and families to enjoy. The garden continues to be an educational tool and a growing source of supplemental, healthy food for the community. Volunteer opportunities at the Eastern Shore Branch are also becoming more abundant. There have always been opportunities for people to help out at the Foodbank’s Eastern Shore Branch, but with the garden, we can now offer additional ways volunteers can get involved by literally getting their hands dirty. 10 How the Foodbank Works $ Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore DONATIONS ARE MADE: the Foodbank secures donations from the food and grocery industries, government agencies, individuals and other organizations.
