Spring/Summer 2009
MLB All-Star Game is July 14,
Reinforces St. Louis is
Best in baseball and beer
St. Louis will
host Major League
Baseball’s All-Star
game on July 14
and the event provides the opportunity for St. Louis to
reinforce its reputation for the best in
baseball, hospitality and beer.
The Tuesday
night game will
be the first time
the summer classic
has been held in St.
Louis since 1966.
A l l - S t a r ga m e s
had been held in
St. Louis in 1940,
1948 and 1957 in
Sportsman’s Park.
This year’s game
will be held in the third year of the “new”
Busch Stadium. It was last held when the
St. Louis Cardinals former home was new in
1966, a game held in typical St. Louis 100plus degrees and about which N.Y. Yankee
manager Casey Stengel remarked that the
older stadium “holds the heat so well.”
The 2009 version will be held in
what is generally considered to be
one of the best of the new ball parks
in Major League Baseball.
Hosting the summer classic is
expected to generate millions in
spending and St. Louis County
retailers will garner their share of
sales and profits when fans and those
associated with the game will spend
money for hotels, meals, beverages
and recreation.
Anheuser-Busch will participate
in the festivities in a variety of ways,
both civic and business. Because the
game will be sold out, there will be
many on- and off-premise watch
parties throughout St. Louis County.
Anheuser-Busch is providing special
packaging for Budweiser and Bud
Light to commemorate the game.
Budweiser and Bud Light will be
available in special All-Star versions of 16-ounce aluminum bottles,
24-ounce cans and on carrier packaging for
20-pack bottles.
Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses raises $340,000 for Backstoppers
Officials of the St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association presented a check for more than
$340,142 to The Backstoppers on Christmas Eve.
The check was the proceeds of the 21st annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses boxing show
last Thanksgiving Eve at Scottrade Center. Grey
Eagle and the Budweiser brand sponsored the
event.
A boisterous crowd of 17,542 watched
matches between area police officers and firefighters. The crowd also observed boxing’s
traditional “10-Count” to honor the nine public
servants who lost their lives in the line of duty
in the previous 12 months.
Jerry Clinton, the association’s Executive Director, presented the check to The Backstoppers’
Executive Director Ron Battelle as area police
and fire officials looked on.
“Our St. Louis community has stepped up
to support The Backstoppers when the need is
the greatest,” said Clinton. “We are pleased to
continue our long-standing efforts on behalf of
The Backstoppers and the families of those who
give their lives protecting our lives and property,”
Clinton said.
Participating in the presentation were David Stokes, President and CEO of Grey Eagle
Distributors, and association officials Jack Martorelli, Steve Holley and Jim Hubbard.
Proceeds from Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses
brings total contributions to more than $2.6 mil-
lion since the event was first held in 1987.
“Ring of Champions” sponsors were Ameren,
Anheuser-Busch, Battle of the Badges, Clayco,
Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers, Mark Bulger Foundation, Dave Mungenast Motorsports and Sam’s
Club.
Those honored by the “10-Count” were Deputy
Michael Triplett of the Washington County (MO)
Sheriff’s Department; Sgt. William Biggs and
Officer Thomas Ballman of the Kirkwood (MO)
Police Department; Firefighter Ryan Hummert
of the Maplewood (MO) Fire Department; Officer Grant Jansen of the St. Charles (MO) Police
Department; University Police Sgt. Michael King
and Leonard Riggins of the St. Louis Fire Department. Each died in the line of duty since last year’s
Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses.
Officers Jeffry Kowalski and Steve Sheldon of
the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department also
will be honored. They were shot in the 1980s and
their recent deaths have been directly connected
to their wounds.
The BackStoppers cover St. Louis City; St.
Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Ste. Genevieve,
Perry, Franklin, St. Francois, Lincoln, Pike, Warren and Washington counties in Missouri; and St.
Clair, Madison, Monroe, Bond, and Clinton counties in Illinois. BackStoppers also cover members
of Troop C of the Missouri Highway Patrol and
District 11 of the Illinois State Police.
Kris Tharp of the Madison County (IL) Sheriff’s
Office, left, and Jim Cacciabando of the Hazelwood Fire Department box during the recent
Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses fundraiser at Scottrade Center. Tharp won the match.

Grey Eagle’s retail customers will soon receive information about We ID to help
them deter underage drinking and materials about Alert Cab.
“Grey Eagle and Anheuser-Busch have worked together for more than a quarter
of a century to fight alcohol abuse, drunk driving and underage drinking,” said Shawn
Freeman, Marketing Director at Grey Eagle. “By providing up-to-date information,
we also are helping retailers continue their own efforts in this area.”
April is Alcohol Awareness Month and materials emphasize that the legal drinking age is 21 and that identifications will be checked.
Materials included:
•
2009 Drivers License Booklets — showing drivers licenses from all 50
states, the District of Columbia and Canada, including those that identify
drivers under 21 years old.
•

St. Louis Cardinals, Budweiser, Sportservice
Launch Designated-Driver Initiative
“Designated Driver of the Season” Will Win Tickets to the MLB’s Home Run Derby
The St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis area
Budweiser distributors and Sportservice are
teaming up to offer the Good Sport program
at Busch Stadium for the seventh consecutive
season. Good Sport is a comprehensive action
plan designed to promote a positive environment
by reminding fans to act responsibly, respect
the rights of others and use a designated driver. “One of our goals as an organization is to provide Cardinals fans with a safe, family-friendly
experience at Busch Stadium, and the Good Sport
program is a great way to both engage and reward
fans in this effort,” said Joe Abernathy, St. Louis
Cardinals vice president of stadium operations.
“We’re pleased to partner again with the St.
Louis Cardinals and Sportservice to encourage
Cardinals fans to drink responsibly and make a
designated driver part of their winning game
plan through the Good Sport program. When it
comes to preventing drunk driving, we’re all part
of the team,” said Carol Clark, Anheuser-Busch
vice president of corporate social responsibility.
Good Sport rewards participants who sign
up to be the designated driver for their group
with a free soda or O’Doul’s. In addition, one
lucky participant is selected as the “Designated
Driver of the Game” during each home game
and he/she receives a Good Sport shirt. Then,
midway through the season, the first “Designated Driver of the Season” is drawn and the
winner receives two tickets to the MLB’s Home
Run Derby. At the end of the season, a second
“Designated Driver of the Season” is chosen
and that individual is entitled to throw out the
first pitch at a Cardinals home game and take
home Cardinals merchandise. The program is
supported by Anheuser-Busch and its St. Louisarea distributors Grey Eagle Distributors, Lohr
Distributing Co., Krey Distributing Co., H.W.
Herrell Distributing and Illinois Distributing Co.
For nearly three decades, Anheus er-Busch has led the alcohol beverage industry in the fight against alcohol abuse.
The company and its distributors have invested
more than $750 million in dozens of communitybased programs and national advertising campaigns to promote responsible drinking and help
prevent underage drinking and drunk driving.

On a chilly winter morning, a young woman
bought milk, bread and other staples at Florissant Dairy, 2975 Patterson Road in busy Colony
Square in Florissant. When she returned to the
car, it wouldn’t start. But help was at hand.
Owner Chris Endres had jumper cables in her vehicle and, a short time
later, the young woman was on her way
home. “All in a day’s business,” said Chris.
keep records, pay a wide variety of taxes that
seem to continue going up, mop the floors and
change the light bulbs. It’s all in a day’s work.”
Florissant Dairy is open at 7 a.m. (8 a.m.
on Saturday and Sunday) until 10 p.m. (11
p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 p.m. on Sunday) year around. “We kid each other that
we don’t have holidays and we put in a lot
of hours each week,” Chris said, “That’s difficult at times but it’s wonderful to serve the
customers. Many live nearby and we’re on a
busy street that generates a lot of store traffic.”
Beer accounts for about one-third of all
store sales and Anheuser-Busch beers are
by far the most popular. “Our customers
want Bud Light, Busch, Budweiser and all
the A-B beers,” Chris said. “They know they
are buying quality products and that most
of them are brewed in here in St. Louis.”
“We get great service from Todd Hunter, our Sales Representative,” Chris said.
“He goes out of his way to make sure we
have what our customers are buying.”
Customer Service
is all-important at
Florissant Dairy
Customer satisfaction is a way of life
for Chris and her husband and for her sister
and brother-in-law, Loretta and Mark Dwyre who comprise the workforce at the store.
During two recent prolonged electrical
outages due to weather, Florissant Dairy was
open even if Chris and her family had to use
flashlights. “I remember dumping a lot of
melting ice cream even after we gave away
as much frozen food as we could,” she said.
“But we were there to serve the customers.”

Chris Endres has owned Florissant Dairy for five
years. She says customer service is vital for small
businesses.
Owning a small business is always challenging but even more so these days. “Small
business owners do everything themselves,”
Chris said. “We order the products, sell, them,

stores. “We had basil for one customer and
yeast for another,” Loretta said. “They were
surprised that we had them. Unfortunately we couldn’t help a man who asked for
ping-pong balls,” Loretta said with a smile.
The location has been a convenience/grocery
store for more than 20 years. “Kids came to the
store for candy 20 years ago and now we see
their children looking at the candy,” Chris said.
