Spring/Summer 2011 Grey Eagle Now Sells Stella Artois
Spring/Summer 2011
Grey Eagle Now Sells
Stella Artois and Beck’s
Premium Beers
Grey Eagle is now selling two of the bestknown beers in the world.
Grey Eagle and other area Anheuser-Busch
wholesalers now distribute Stella Artois and
Beck’s brands that are part of the AnheuserBusch InBev company according to Grey Eagle
President and CEO David Stokes.
“We are excited about the growth potential
for these two brands and are pleased to now carry
the full portfolio of products from our partner
Anheuser-Busch InBev,” said David Stokes.
Mr. Stokes said Grey Eagle has tried to acquire
the two brands since the creation of AnheuserBusch InBev in 2008. Recent negotiations have
successfully brought the brands to AnheuserBusch wholesalers in the greater St. Louis area.
Stella Artois is a high-end European Import
and a classic Belgian lager, golden in color with
exceptional clarity and a spicy hop character. It is
brewed using only the finest natural ingredients
– water, barley malt, hops, non-malted grains
and Stella Artois’ unique yeast strain – a muchcherished secret.
In Belgium, every beer has its own unique
glass designed to highlight the brand’s special
flavor, and Stella Artois is no exception. The Stella
Artois chalice glass is designed to ensure that the
head foams perfectly and the aroma is preserved.
A “chalice cup” can will soon be available.
Stella Artois was originally brewed as a special
holiday beer. It was christened Stella, which is
Latin for “star.” The beer was so well received
that it became available throughout the year. A
protected historical site, the modern Stella Artois
brewery, still located in Leuven, was constructed
in 2004.
Beck’s is a premium German pilsner, golden in
color, with a robust, distinctive full-bodied taste,
a fresh “hoppy” bouquet and a rich, full head. It
will soon be available in 20-bottle cases.
In 1873, three entrepreneurs in Bremen,
Germany, shared a vision for creating exceptional
beer only from the finest ingredients. The Beck’s
recipe has not changed and is still made with the
same unique ingredients.
Brewed in Bremen, Germany, Beck’s is made
in accordance with the “Reinheitsgebot,” the
German Purity Law of 1516. It is brewed using
only top-grade barley, hand-selected hops from
the Bavarian Hallertau region, fresh glacier
water and Beck’s exclusive strain of yeast that’s
been cultured and cultivated for generations.
Also available are Beck’s Light, Beck’s Dark,
Beck’s Oktoberfest and Beck’s Non-Alcoholic.
Grey Eagle Expands into Franklin, Gasconade Counties
Grey Eagle Distributors, which sells and
services Anheuser-Busch products and other
premium beverages, has expanded its service
area west to include most of Franklin and
Gasconade counties, the first expansion in the
company’s 48-year history according to David
M. Stokes, President and CEO of the company..
Grey Eagle has added approximately 180
retail accounts in the two counties in areas south
of the Missouri River. The area includes major
towns including Washington, Union, Villa Ridge
and Hermann.
Grey Eagle and Krey Distributing Company
of St. Peters jointly purchased Missouri Eagle
Distributors. Krey now serves the areas once
served by Missouri Eagle north of the Missouri
River in Warren and Montgomery counties.
Many Missouri Eagle employees were offered
positions at Grey Eagle and Krey and a good
portion of those employees accepted the new
positions.
“We have integrated our new employees into
our company and have established delivery and
sales routes in Franklin and Gasconade counties,”
Mr. Stokes said. “We are striving for a smooth
transition in these counties and we are dedicated
to helping our retailers grow Anheuser-Busch and
beverages sales.
“Missouri Eagle did a great job supporting
both the retail accounts and the community and
we intend to maintain that strong tradition,” Mr.
Stokes said. “We are pleased to be able to meet
the needs of our new retailers and welcome them
into our Grey Eagle family.”

Sarah Panzau, a member of Anheuser-Busch’s
Corporate Social Responsibility Speakers’ Bureau,
will appear at three St. Louis County High Schools
in April. She will talk with students about making
good choices including not drinking and driving.
She is scheduled to be at Vianney High School
and Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood on April 20
and will speak twice at Marquette High School in
the Rockwood School District on April 27. Her
presentation is titled Living Proof.
Sarah grew up in Belleville, Ill., and fell in
love with the sport of volleyball the first time she
picked up a ball in sixth grade. From there, Sarah
blossomed into a star player on several select club
teams, was a three-year starter for her high school
squad. In college, Sarah earned Freshman of the
Year honors and was named to the National Junior
College Athletic Association All-America team
as an outside hitter.
In 2003, Sarah decided to drive home drunk,
missed a highway exit and rolled her car four
times. Without a seat belt, she was ejected
through the rear window of her car, her left arm
was torn from her body and she was thrown onto
the roadway.
A year after the crash that cost Sarah her left
arm – and nearly cost Sarah her life – she began
to speak to students in her home state of Illinois
about the poor decisions that led to her crash.
Sarah became a member of the Anheuser-Busch
Speakers Bureau and after a year and a half of
speaking regionally in the Midwest, she began
to speak nationally in 2005.

Grey Eagle Salutes New Retailers in Franklin, Gasconade Counties
As Grey Eagle expands its service area, it
is finding a strong cadre of retail customers in
Franklin and Gasconade counties dedicated to
meeting the needs of their customers.
Leonard and Shiela Vogelgesang own Wayside
Liquors in Villa Ridge and Catawissa.
Leonard and Sheila Vogelgesang have
owned Wayside Liquors since 1984 and the
convenience store sells everything from bread
and beer to motor oil, lottery tickets and gasoline.
And they sell fish bait from the store at 3302
Highway 100 in Villa Ridge.
“We sell everything our customers need
or want,” said Sheila Vogelgesang who began
working at the store in 1976. “We consider
ourselves a one-stop shop and Leonard and I
really enjoy talking with our customers.”
Leonard drove a tractor-trailer truck for the
United Parcel Service in Earth City before retir-
children, Brent Kluesner and Michelle Kluesner
Hoerstkamp. The South Point location is the
newest Fas-Trip convenience store. Of the seven
locations, six are in Grey Eagle’s service area.
With a slogan of “More than
just a Fast Trip,” the stores
sells gasoline, food, wine,
liquor and beer and a large
variety of other merchandise.
“Our South Point location
is Fas-Trip’s newest and the
largest at 5,000 square-feet,”
said Michelle. “Because the
City of Washington is moving in
our direction, we are confident
t h at t h e s t o re i s l o cat ed
where it will be even more
successful in years to come.”
On a recent day, a large
number of Shamrocks for
Dystrophy were displayed as
Fas-Trip participated in the
annual Muscular Dystrophy
Association fundraiser. “We
are very involved in community events and many
charities rely on our support. We learned the
value of that from our parents,” Michelle said.
Many years ago, the bar at Simon’s on the

Although Hermann is now much larger, Steve and
Linda Simon wanted to preserve history in the
Missouri River town that has become a must-visit
for tourists from throughout the world.

we knew it would be the type of business to draw
local customers throughout the year but would
have the advantage of attracting tourists from late

purchased it, separating the restaurant and bar,
but we didn’t want to make changes that would
detract from the historic nature of the riverfront.”
Located less than a block from the Missouri
River at 4 Schiller Street, the restaurant is known
for the quality of the food and service. Popular
entrees include charbroiled shrimp, prime rib,
slow-smoked barbecue, German foods and several
types of fish.
Much of the menu is similar to that served at
River’s Edge, a restaurant on the Gasconade River
that the Simons have owned for 22 years.
Although Hermann is known for the wineries
that surround it, Simon’s on the Waterfront sells
more beer than wine and a majority of it is from
Anheuser-Busch.
Steve and Linda Simon own Simon’s on the
Waterfront in Hermann.
If you are riding Amtrak, the train stops near
Marquart’s Landing at 300 West Front Street in
Washington. If you are driving, there’s plenty of
on-street parking. And if you came to look at the
Missouri River, well, it’s just across the street.
Rick Marquart may have a perfect location
in Washington. His restaurant and bar is in the
historic downtown Washington area. You will
likely meet people you know when you arrive
and, if not, you’ll make new friends before you
leave. And if you want you can watch sports,
there are 18 flat-screen televisions in the bar or
on the outdoor patio that is a favorite spot during
warm weather.
“We bought the business eight years ago
and made a lot of changes when we bought it,
remodeling and upgrading things,” Rick said.
“The building itself goes back to 1855 and was
once a hotel so it is very versatile. We have an
upstairs bar and a large room for private parties.”
Rick and General Manager Alan Breid say
that Marquart’s Landing’s signature item is
pizza. The menu is large and includes steaks,
shrimp, salads, specialty sandwiches, salads and
appetizers.
When asked about beer sales, Rick says that
Anheuser-Busch products are the best selling.
“When I walk out to the patio during the summer,
I see a lot of people watching Cardinals games.
enjoying one of Mike Shannon’s frosty ones.”
