Head Story Sports
Issue 7 By Students, For Students March 2008 Head Story By Clair Hoswell It’s March and therefore things are looking up, in more ways than one. Weather’s lightening up a little bit, spring training for a lot of sports has begun, and oh right! SPRING BREAK. Indeed, this is a very exciting time because in just a few short days we’ll all pull a William Wallace and scream “FREEDOM!”. Whether you’re hitting a vacation spot or just chilling in Calgary, try to relax some and let the loveliness that is spring to lift your spirits. Also, this month contains a holiday! St. Patrick’s Day is here and I hope you all wore green. It’s customary to pinch people who don’t wear green. (I hope that sounded menacing…) Anyway, did you know that leprechauns are really not an Irish symbol? So can we skip over that whole “hearts stars horseshoes, clover and blue moons” business? Well, I wish you a “Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona” (Happy St. Patrick’s Day) and hope you wore green! Slaínte! (Cheers). Sports By Josie Bethair Did you know that the Boston Red Sox were the first team to wear green uniforms on St. Patrick’s Day? Indeed. Also, Boston was the first city to have a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the US. Sigh, I love March. Table of Contents p.1………. Head Story Sports p.2………. Comics p.3………. Advice Column Recipe p.4………. Please watch this space. We believe that a book review will briefly appear the morning of April 1, while you are on spring break. Then, it will quickly disappear, like a shadow in front of an oncoming train. How hard is it to make a hit song? This youtube movie not only answers this question, but also proves just what the combined powers of Scott Adams’ fans and a German band called RIVO DREI can achieve with lyrics that almost make sense. Yet, it seems unlikely that any of these actually mean what they seem to say. Really, what would it be like to be someone else? One would be looking through the eyes of another body, through the other person’s memories, perspectives, even biases. Wouldn’t that just mean that they would be the other person? Or when someone gives the aforementioned statement to another person, do they mean something completely different? Do they mean what they would do if they had been in an identical situation to theirs? That would still be an inaccurate statement – you don’t consider the other person’s experiences that led up to their decision, the perspectives that shaped it. For instance, imagine you were a wealthy, overall well-off person, telling a homeless person that “if I were you”, you’d get a job and stop crowding up the sidewalks. But suppose there’s more than what is on the surface. She could be subject to prejudice – she can’t get a job. She could have a phobia or disability that prevents her from getting a job. This may seem a little out of contact with our daily lives, so let me give another example. “If I were you, I’d start picking up my slack and do my homework for once.” Suppose, however, that this “slacker” in fact has a lot going on in his life already. He can’t help but worry about keeping his job, stresses about appearances, can’t go to sleep because his mind is too full of endless worries. He could be full to the brim with other things he is doing already; sports, missions, drama… He might not consider that particular piece of homework to be important in his later life, since he’ll never use that anyway because Math 30 is definitely not required for social services and volunteering. He could even be stressed out over a dying pet, and not be able to focus on anything, never mind school. Really, when you take a look at it, every soul is so mind-bogglingly complex that it is surprising we understand each other at all.
