ZUMBA GOLD with LESLY KATZ Tuesdays at 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Fridays at 11:00 a.m. to 12 Noon For the Months of July and August MY TWO daughters often tease their grandfather about being stubborn, a trait he strenuously denies. One day Grandpa was telling them about a horse-pack trip he had taken up the Continental Divide. "The guides felt that the personalities of horse and rider should be compatible," he related. "They matched us up carefully." "What was your horse like?" one daughter broke in. Grandpa's answer was reluctant. "They gave me a mule," he said. CAUGHT up in the fitness craze, I joined a club that offered a reasonably priced membership. Although I never went, a year later I hurried back to renew. "Do you guys have a name for people like me who join and never show up?" I jokingly asked the well-muscled man behind the counter. "Sure," he responded with a grin. "Profit." The Wise Farmer's Donkey One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out a way to get him out. Finally he decided it was probably impossible and the animal was old and the well was dry anyway, so it just wasn't worth it to try and retrieve the donkey. So the farmer asked his neighbours to come over and help him cover up the well. They all grabbed shovels and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, when the donkey realized what was happening he cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down and let out some happy brays. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well to see what was happening and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was shaking it off and taking a step up. As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to everyone's amazement, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off. Will and Guy consider that the moral of this tale is: Life is going to shovel dirt on you. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Through applying wisdom every adversity can be turned into a stepping stone. The way to get out of the deepest well is by never giving up but by shaking yourself off and taking a step up. What happens to you isn't nearly as important as how you react to it. WHEN my daughter Caroline asked me if I would baby-sit for her six-month-old identical twins, I was hesitant. "How am I going to tell April from Stacey?" I asked. Caroline was busy getting ready to leave the house. "Just ask Rick," she said, nodding at her four-year-old, who was engrossed in a cartoon show on TV. "He knows." Confidently, I undressed the twins and put them in the bath. When I was ready to dress them, I called to Rick. "Which one is which?" "That's easy," he yelled back, eyes still riveted on Bugs Bunny. "April always wears blue." L I MY GRANDMOTHER, 75 at the time, went downtown to see her ophthalmologist, whose office was in a large hotel. But there was a door at the end of a corridor she couldn't open. She gave the knob a good, hard twist but that didn't help. Then she tugged and rattled the handle quite vigorously. Suddenly she heard a voice say. "Take it easy, lady! The bar doesn't open for another two hours!" G H T E R S I D E ON A car trip, my grandparents stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. There on a table Grandma left her sunglasses, which she didn't miss until she and Grandpa were back in their car on the highway. By then, they had to travel some distance before they could find a place to turn around. Grandpa fussed and complained, but gradually quieted down as they neared the restaurant. As he got out of the car it was in a humble voice that he said, "Well, I guess while I'm in there I might just as well get my hat." A FRIEND wanted me to enroll in an aerobics class. "No. Absolutely not!" I exclaimed. "I tried that once." "What happened?" she asked, looking puzzled. "I twisted, hopped, jumped, stretched and pulled," I replied. "And by the time I got those darn leotards on, the class was over!" WHILE I was working at a fitness club, a co-worker was showing a new member around. Turning to the trainer the woman said, "I don't feel comfortable here. I feel fat, ugly and not properly dressed. Everyone seems to be thin, beautiful and wearing the nicest aerobic outfits." In an attempt to make the unhappy woman feel at home, the fitness trainer replied, "You shouldn't feel that way. Not everyone here is the way you describe. Look at the fat man riding the bicycle over there. He's not well dressed." The woman stared at the trainer and said, "That's my husband." Stop Paying High Credit Card Rates! Box 4000, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0 KITCHEN NEWS Sharon Peichl Here we go – back in the kitchen for a 'warm up' of our talents for the fall season (too soon upon us!!) Pancake Breakfast time – 3 busy mornings of welcoming the community to our facility and to meet our very capable members who cook and serve for about 2000 hungry patrons each year. It has taken a lot of organization to keep this operation going every year. The lists and job outline are well documented and so very necessary – what would we do without our lists???? Members line up to sign up and then perform so many tasks working together. Thanks in advance to you all!! The next event will be our catering dinner for about 125 contestants in the Heart and Stroke Golf Tournament on the 16th. Another set of lists (!! of course) and led by Marilyn Campbell to ensure all details are attended to. A full day for several teams to produce a great dining experience again. We begin with peeling potatoes and carrots at 9am, and end by (of course) cleaning up to leave our fine kitchen in shape for the September start of our own fun season. The 8 lunch teams will start serving Friday lunches on September 12th. Menus will soon be a part of our 'to do' lists. The draft schedule is prepared – waiting for adjustments due to welcome winter holidays! No problem – we are flexible! We often need spares for the teams and helpers for all events during the year. Team lists and spare list will be posted for you to add your name or just ask at the office. Each team prepares 3 or 4 lunches for 40 or more diners about once every 2 months over the winter. Some teams have been operating for 10 years, and some for 2 or 3. All agree that it is an enjoyable experience, and are carrying on for another year at least. Thanks to every team member and their frequent helpers!! ATTENTION NEW HORIZON FLOOR CURLERS... Fred and Vera Ralke are calling on someone to take over the Thursday Floor Curling Program. The Thursday Floor Curling program plays an important role in New Horizons Floor Curling Activity. On Thursday the floors are prepared and the mats sets up to make the room ready for Friday Floor Curling. Typically, after the room is set-up on Thursday people are encouraged to have a quick game or two just for fun. This provides a good training ground for people new to the sport or people who just want to play for fun. Please let the office know if you would be interested in taking this on. This activity could be run by a few people collectively or perhaps by a husband and wife team. MEMBERSHIP Vera Ralke We now have 572 paid members for the 2013/14 membership year, 135 of whom are new to the Centre this year. BUYING OR SELLING A HOME OR VACATION PROPERTY? GIMLI NEW HORIZONS 55+ BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS Bingo at New Horizons 55+ Edna Lavigne Wednesday Evenings at 7:00 You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. Have you thought about learning ballroom dancing? Here are some thoughts on our Ballroom Dancing Program. Classes are drop in. Come and try a class. Fun! The social nature of this activity is wonderful. We laugh lots and enjoy the sport. Health benefits: Usually as physical exercise. It's important to keep moving as we age. More recently, we've seen research on further health benefits of dancing, such as stress reduction and increased serotonin level, with its sense of well-being. Brain Development: New England Journal of Medicine states,... " the only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing." Doing crossword puzzles at least four days a week - 47% Dancing frequently - 76%. That was the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical. Ballroom dancing has many spontaneous decisions which promote the growth of nerve pathways in the brain. Learn Something New: Dancing integrates several brain functions at once — kinesthetic, rational, musical, and emotional. You are using a lot of your brain, moving and having fun all at the same time! We dance every Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. We will begin in the fall, once golfing is finished and the garden is taken in. Please consider joining us. 5 Pin Bowling Tom Hussey The 2014-2015 bowling season will begin on September 11th at 1:00 pm. The sign-up sheet is now posted on the bulletin board at New Horizons.
