Volunteers give their time, energy & resources to help make New Horizons a better place to play. This year we are holding our Gimli New Horizons is in the midst of renovations once again. (just like Winnipeg in the summertime…) New Floors for the Hallways, Foyer, Coat Room, and Office!!!! The Centre will be closed for about a week during the construction, we expect likely the 22th to the 26th. Please check with your activity leaders to see if your activities are proceeding. Volunteer Appreciation in conjunction with our July General Members Meeting. Any members who volunteer are encouraged to stop by for a hot dog and a pat on the back for a job well done. Cocktails 5:00 • Hotdogs 6:00 Meeting 7:00 p.m. We meet Tuesdays from about 10:30 to about 2:00 in the afternoon. We’re a friendly crowd who all share a passion for quilting and other fabric arts. Often we have lunch and catch up on the news of the time. If you’re a new member at the Centre drop by and check it out. A man who says what he thinks is called a bach-e-lor. PEROGY MAKING The Office Well, with the close of another season of perogy making behind us we can say that it was successful despite weathering a few times with a few less volunteers than normal. Our regular steadfast group suffered everything from odd medical issues to a period where we lost about 20 volunteers to a nasty cold/flu bug that was going around. We persevered however and managed to continue to get out the hundreds of dozens each month. It’s rumored that Mike Michaluk and Jackie Wilson may not be returning next year. (Thanks to both of you for all your hard work) If you are a new member to the Centre this is an excellent way to dive into the mix, meet some great new people and walk away feeling very involved. There are people to teach almost all the different aspects of perogy making. I bet between all the people involved there is probably over a 1000 years of perogy making experience between them. We are looking specifically for one or two people who are good at organizing to take the lead on this two day event, if you happen to be interested, call the office at 642-7909. Have a great Summer Everyone, Hope to see you back in the Fall! A Beautiful Women A wife, arriving home from a shopping trip, was horrified to find her husband in bed with a lovely young woman. Just as the wife was about to storm out of the house, her husband stopped her with these words: Age 3: She looks at herself and sees a Queen. Age 8: She looks at herself and sees Cinderella. "Before you leave, I want you to hear how this all came about." So he continued: "Driving along the highway, I saw this young woman looking tired and bedraggled, so I brought her home and made her a meal from the roast beef you had forgotten in refrigerator. She had only some worn sandals on her feet, so I gave her a pair of good shoes you had discarded because they had gone out of style. She was cold so I gave her a sweater I bought you for your birthday that you never wore because the color did not suit you. Her pants were worn out so I gave her a pair of yours that were perfectly good but too small for you now. Then when she was about to leave the house she paused and asked, "Is there anything else your wife doesn't use any more?" Two Virginia rednecks go on a fishing trip. They rent all the equipment - the reels, the rods, the wading suits, the rowboat, the car, and even a cabin in the woods. I mean they spend a fortune! The first day they go fishing, but they don't catch anything. The same thing happens on the second day, and on the third day. It goes on like this until finally, on the last day of their vacation, one of the men catches a fish. As they're driving home they're really depressed. One guy turns to the other and says, "Do you realize that this one lousy fish we caught cost us fifteen hundred bucks?" Age 15: She looks at herself and sees an Ugly Sister (Mum I can't go to school looking like this!) Age 20: She looks at herself and sees "too fat/ too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly"but decides she's going out anyway. Age 30: She looks at herself and sees "too fat/ too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly" but decides she doesn't have time to fix it, so she's going out anyway. L Age 40: She looks at herself and sees "clean" and goes out anyway. I Age 50: She looks at herself and sees "I am" and goes wherever she wants to go. G H T E Age 60: She looks at herself and reminds herself of all the people who can't even see themselves in the mirror anymore. Goes out and conquers the world. Age 70: She looks at herself & sees wisdom, laughter and ability, goes out and enjoys life. R Age 80: Doesn't bother to look. Just puts on a purple hat and goes out to have fun with the world. S An old sea captain with one wooden leg, one hook replacing a missing hand, and one missing eye goes into a bar. The other guy says, "Wow! Then it's a good thing we didn't catch any more!" "From birth to age 18, a girl needs good parents. From 18 to 35, she needs good looks. From 35 to 55, she needs a good personality. From 55 on, she needs good cash." "Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up interest wrinkles the soul." --Douglas MacArthur 50th Anniversary A couple goes out to dinner to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. On the way home, she notices a tear in his eye and asks if he's getting sentimental because they're celebrating 50 wonderful years together. He replies, "No, I was thinking about the time before we got married. Your father threatened me with a shotgun and said he'd have me thrown in jail for 50 years if I didn't marry you. Tomorrow I would've been a free man!" I D E The sailor sitting next to him says, "You're really in bad shape. What happened to your leg?" "I fell overboard," says the Captain, "and before my mates could pull me aboard, a shark bit it off." "Terrible," says the sailor. "And what happened to your hand?" "We attacked a man-o'-war," says the Captain, "and one of the attackees chopped it off with a saber." "Awful," says the sailor. "And how did you lose your eye?" "Seagull droppings," says the Captain. "Amazing," says the sailor. "I didn't know seagull droppings could put your eye out." "Can't," says the Captain. "But it was my first day with the hook." The Centre seems intact, a little bit of water seeped into some of the crawlspace but the fans have been going constantly to dry things out. The fan situation in both of the bathrooms has been dealt with once again. Rick’s Electric replaced both of the old fans with brand new modern, almost silent fans. The drywall was patched up and the area repainted to make it like new again. The well water test report is pegged to the bulletin board for those who wish to peruse it. SUNSHINE REPORT Marion Gale For the month of May, a Get Well card was sent out to Henry Dallmeier, who was sick in hospital. Cards of Sympathy were sent to Gord & Lori Seale, Janet Isfeld and Eileen Dalman, Francis Einarson, and Phyllis & Al Olson, all of whom went through the passing of family members. Our sincerest condolences go out to all of you. If you hear of any members with problems, please don’t hesitate to call the office at 642-7909. Tours Elaine Einarson Just a Reminder; Next bus trip is scheduled for September 27, 28, & 29th to Spirit Lake. Keep an eye on the bulletin board at New Horizons for more information as it gets closer to the date. If you have any questions, please call Elaine at 642-9495. 9 Centre St., Gimli, MB Mon. - Sat. 11:30 am to 9:00 pm Sunday Noon to 8:00 pm Facebook: Comodo Chinese Restaurant During the next few months, as a New Horizons Member, you may get a call from Jackie or one of her Committee people asking if you might consider stepping forward to fill a board position at the Centre. New Horizons Board of Directors is made up of 16 positions in total, 6 Executive and 10 regular. All New Horizons Members who can volunteer their time in any of these roles are encouraged to seek nomination for the Annual General Meeting in October each year. It would be wonderful to have several people to choose from for each of the roles. If you feel you have a skill or the energy to contribute something meaningful to your Centre please consider running for election in one of these Board positions in October. If you are interested you can reach Jackie Poloski by leaving a message at the office. Board Position: Treasurer Board Position: Maintenance The role of Treasurer ...
