Message From
Our President
Jackie Poloski
Christmas is over and the long month of January begins. The special cooking is done and the food eaten,
the months of baking is devoured, the carefully
wrapped gifts are opened and hopefully enjoyed and
family and friends are getting back to normal.
I had a wonderful Christmas with all my family. Only
a couple of my 12 grandchildren missing. Many
brought girlfriends/boyfriends on Christmas Eve. I
really enjoyed meeting them and the great fun we
had with fireworks and gift games.
I hope you enjoyed gatherings, big or small, with your
family and friends.
December saw fall wind-ups in some activities like
floor curling and Texas hold-em, at New Horizons but
both will be starting up again in January.
Erica Timchishen
We're so lucky to have all the activities at our centre

Our Christmas tournament has come and gone
once again. Bruce Geske wandered off with the first
prize, a bottle of Crown’s finest apple cider. Kel
Crawford came in a close second, with Loni
Loughery walking home with the first out bottle of
beer. Join us in the new year for more fun and
games at New Horizons as we dive into our second
half of the season. We play Weds. From 1:30 to
about 3:30 (depending on your skill).

KITCHEN NEWS
Sharon Peichl
Our Friday lunch teams met to plan the schedule for
the 2016 lunches.
Our 7 teams made some adjustments to cover for
winter absences of a couple of leaders. No we don't
resent them - we wish them a very happy winter!!!
Some discussion at the meeting raised a couple of
questions from our customers that we would like to
explain. Lunch is served from 11am to 12:45pm. The
new lunch closing hour of 12:45 is due to the long
hours put in by each team to prepare and serve.
Team members want to play too! Cards and curling
call us too! Cooking and set up start at 8 or 8:30, and
some team members also shopped and prepared a
day ahead. Dishes and floors must be done after
each lunch, so holding lunch open until one for only 2
or 4 servings doesn't seem reasonable. Preorders for
lunch is not fair to those in line and quantities available. Portion size is geared to lunch not supper, even
though sometimes it seems like a major meal. We try
to judge fairly, and prepare for 50 but have been
happy to welcome 60 and more. Sorry if it’s stretched
a little thin! We have run out more often this year,
and will do our best to adjust. We will continue at 50
in the new year as quite a few may be away, but we
will monitor numbers to see if that proves true.
All our kitchen volunteers are to be praised for their
delicious offerings and thanked for their good work.
The lunch program has been operating for about 12
or 14 years and we hope to offer it for many more.
We are so lucky to have such an excellent facility
and equipment!

As far as maintenance in December goes, it was a
fairly quiet month. No specific projects last month,
only routine maintenance items. Some extra shelving
in the pantry for the pots and pans. The corroded tap
sets in the bathrooms have been replaced with
brand new units, please remember to wash your
hands...

The Fabric Arts Group has been growing rapidly in the last year or so. We
now have over 25 members. Some
come most weeks, some only in the
summer, some only in the winter and
others come when they have the time.
We are a very friendly and versatile group with abilities at various levels. Tuesdays are spent doing
show and tell, sharing ideas, getting help from other
members and working on projects. The last little
while was very busy. Many purses were made as
well as items for the Art, Craft and Quilt sale. The
sale went over very well. Many items were purchased and the silent auction was well attended.
We are also working once again on sanitation kits
for Days for Girls (http://www.daysforgirls.org/)
which supplies reusable sanitation products to girls
in developing countries. These allow the girls to
attend school on those days of the month when otherwise they would have to stay home. We are planning a “yard sale” and possibly a felting class in the
New Year.
If you are working on a PHD (project half done),
looking to share your talents or learn new skills,
drop in on a Tuesday and see what it is all about.
Just be aware, fabric arts is very addictive.
A Very Special Thanks goes out to
Fred Ralke for fixing 9 of our

from broken legs. Fred used his
extraordinary knowledge of legs to
come to the Centre’s rescue.

A man goes for a prostate exam. The proctologist is
checking him out when he finds a roll of hundreds
up the guy's bum. He pulls out the money and
counts it, "You're not going to believe this but I've
just found $1900 dollars up your bum." "Hmmm",
says the patient "That’s why I haven't been feeling
too grand."
An angry wife was complaining about her husband spending
all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with
him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The
same as you I suppose," she replied. So, the husband ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one
shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass
and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she
spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well,
there you go," cried the husband. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!"
A 92 year-old man went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later the doctor saw the man walking
down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his
arm. At his follow up visit the doctor talked to the
man and said, "You're really doing great, aren't
you?" The man replied, "Just doing what you said
Doctor, 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful'." The
Doctor said, "I didn't say that. I said you got a heart
murmur. Be careful."
A drunk guy walks into a bar and approaches the bartender,
"Can I have a pint of Less, please?" "I'm sorry sir," the barman
replies, looking slightly puzzled, "I've not come across that one
before. Is it a spirit?" "I've no idea," replies the guy, "The thing
is, I went to see my doctor last week and he told me that I
should drink less."

Tom, Dick and Harry, three explorers, were
captured by cannibals in the jungles of Borneo.
The cannibal chief says to them, "If you pass
the tribal test we will let you live. Go into the
jungle and gather 10 items of the same fruit.
"So the three guys scamper into the woods,
and Tom comes back first with 10 apples. The
Chief explains the trial to him, "You must shove
the fruits up your butt without any statement on
your face or you will be eaten." The first apple
was okay but Tom winced in pain on the second apple, and was promptly killed and went to
heaven (he was a good explorer). Dick comes
back with 10 berries and the chief explains the
trial to him as well. Dick doesn't think it should
be too tough and begins. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
But on the ninth berry he burst out in laughter
and is killed. Tom and Dick meet in heaven
where Tom asks, "Dick, why did you laugh?
You almost got away with it!" Dick replied, "I
couldn't help it. I saw Harry coming with an
armload of pineapples."
A woman came up behind her husband while he
was enjoying his morning coffee and slapped him
on the back of the head. "I found a piece of paper
in your pants pocket with the name 'Marylou' written on it," she said, furious. "You had better have
an explanation." "Calm down, honey," the man
replied. "Remember last week when I was at the
dog track? That was the name of the dog I bet on.
"The next morning, his wife snuck up on him and
smacked him again." What was that for?" he complained. "Your dog called last night."

It was Christmas Eve. A poor old lady was sitting
alone, except for her cat, in her tiny house, in front
of a small fire. Suddenly, there was a flash of light,
and the old woman's good fairy appeared in the
room. The old woman was astonished, but the
fairy reassured her: "Don't be afraid! I am your
good fairy. You are very poor, and all alone at
Christmas, so I have come to grant you three
wishes, to cheer you up." The old woman was
about to speak, but the fairy held up her hand.
"Wait!" she said. "Before you make a wish, think
carefully! You will get exactly what you wish for,
and no wish can be undone!" So the old woman
sat silently, staring at the fire and thinking. Eventually, she spoke: "First", she said, "I want to be
very, very wealthy." Poof! Immediately, the tiny
house was packed with pots full of gold coins, and
sacks of bank-notes. There was more money than
anyone could spend in an entire lifetime. The old
woman looked around and smiled. She thought
some more, and spoke again: "Next", she said, "I
want to be young and beautiful again, like I was
when I was 18." Poof! The old woman disappeared. In her place sat a beautiful young woman,
with smooth, white skin and long, golden hair. The
woman looked at her hands and arms, felt her hair,
and smiled. "Third", she said to the fairy, "I want
you to change my cat into a handsome young
prince, who will love me and take care of me all my
life!" Poof! The fairy disappeared, and the cat leapt
up from his place by the fire as a handsome young
prince. He reached out to the woman, pulled her to
her feet, embraced her, and kissed her passionately. Then he gazed into her eyes and said: "Hah!
Now you're really going to be sorry that you took
me to the vet!"
My doctor asked if any members of my family suffered
from insanity, I replied, No, we all seem to enjoy it.
THURSDAY FLOOR CURLING
Jim Richardson (and his assistant Bev)
Jim and Bev want to thank all those who came out
and joined us for Thurday morning floor curling. We
averaged over 20 members each Thursday. Everyone seemed to have a good time, I know we did.
Special thanks go the Bingo group who put down all
the tables after Bingo on Wednesday nights. Wow –
great job! Special thanks also to those who came out
faithfully early on Thursday mornings to help us set
up – Fred Ralke, Al Kist, Ed Kustra and Bill Sass.
Jim I and I couldn't have done it without your excellent help.
We are now off to warmer weather and will leave
Thursday Floor Curlers in the safe hands of Fred and
Vera Ralke. Please join them Thusday, January
7th.
We wish each and every one of you a safe, healthy,
happy New Year.

With Four Locations in Winnipeg
As I look back over 2015 and I see how much goes
on at our Centre, the activities, the events, the gatherings. We are very fortunate to have this place to
go for our games and gatherings. Over the last few
years the membership numbers have been strong
and growing. With more people come more ideas
and more life experience. We can use that here at
the Centre. Current numbers are 549 for the year so
far, 84 of whom are new to the Centre this year.
The January General Members meeting was held at
the Centre earlier this week. It would have been a
good meeting to have a higher attendance at. To get
a truer perspective on how the general member
population is thinking higher member turnout is always better. The members who did attend had lots
of questions for the Board and also contributed lots
of good ideas for future discussions. The next General Meeting in April should be a good one.

Carpet Bowling is one of the original New Horizons
Activities that was started up back in the 1980’s and
we are still up and running and we welcome more
members to come and play, age is not a problem.
This is not like the 5 or 10 pin bowling in an alley, but
a little more like Lawn Bowling. We toss our balls and
try to get into one of the three circles, not pushing out
others as both colors win points.
After your lunch join us for and hour and a half for
easy, fun exercise and comradery. Hope we see you
there, enjoying this sport.
We play Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m.

Tours
Roger Newman
MAHNOMEN IS VEGAS AT A FRACTION OF THE
COST
It's like going to Las Vegas at an affordable price.
That was the pleasant discovery of 56 bus passengers who travelled to Minnesota's Mahnomen Shooting Star Casino on a three-day tour in late November. They included 33 Interlake residents, mostly
members of Gimli's New Horizons Club, and 23 Winnipeg residents from the East Kildonan and Fort
Garry neighborhoods.
"We always have a good time," says Elaine Einarson, the New Horizons tour chairperson who organizes four U.S. gambling trips a year for club members and guests. "The two trips just before and after
Christmas give our groups a nice break from winter."
Einarson signs up the Interlake passengers for B &
B Tours of Winnipeg led by Bruce and Brenda Rand.
The latest contingent of local passengers, a mixture
of veterans and a few newbie gamblers, left the New
Horizons Club at 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning on a
four hour trip that took them to Winnipeg to pick up
more passengers, through U.S. customs and then
on to Mahnomen.
Many Gimli passengers lacked sleep because of the
New Horizons Christmas dinner the previous evening, but they were in a good mood because the
three-day tour is a bargain by any standard. It costs
only $156 per person and the Shooting Star Casino
gives each gambler a $100 start-off credit to tempt
them to play 1,100 slot machines and the blackjack,
poker and bingo games.
The comparison to Las Vegas is appropriate. The
Shooting Star Casino, opened in 1992, would not be
out of place on the Vegas strip. It is an opulent operation that has transformed Mahnomen from one of
Minnesota's poorest cities into a prosperous community.
For some tour members, the trip was almost as
much about Christmas shopping as it was about
gambling. A stop was made at the Grand Forks Columbia Mall on the way down, followed by an excursion to Detroit Lakes stores on the middle day, and a
last shopping chance in Thief River Falls on the way
home. Popular bus driver John kept the bus humming right along on schedule despite a short but intense snow storm in the Detroit Lakes area. Nobody
was ever bored as amiable hosts Bruce and Brenda
ran bingo games and other prize-giveaway contests
as the comfortable bus traversed the highways.
Now that Christmas is over, Einarson is planning to
organize a second winter gambling trip, with Devil's
Lake, North Dakota, and Warroad, Minnesota, being
possible destinations. It too will probably attract a full
load of passengers despite the unfavorable U.S. exchange rate in recent months.
Calling all Photography
Fans!
If you enjoy taking pictures, consider
taking part in a New Horizons 55+
Photo Group. Right now we are collecting names and emails of interested members, with a plan to have an initial meeting in the new year. Group meetings will be once or
twice a month on a day to be determined by group
members.
Meeting topics will be determined by group members as well, and may include the basics of photography, troubleshooting in photography, travel slide
shows, photo editing or photo editing software, lighting and special modes of photography, outings on
specific dates or with specific assignments in mind,
and lots of sharing of everyone's images!
This group is not intended to be a formal class, as
everyone's experience and images provide a
chance for others to learn. The office will have a
sheet posted on the bulletin board to try and establish if this type of thing will work at the Centre. If you
are interested, put your name on the list and we will
try and develop the Program.

Christmas Capers was a Blast!!!
Sold Out in ten days, great music, lots of dancing,
eating and making merry!
Look out
2016, here we
come!
From an
empty room...
It is so exciting, a New Year, a new beginning and a
new hope for a wonderful healthy and happy future.
This is the time of the year when many people make
resolutions to make personal changes.
Our Tai Chi class looks forward to helping all those
that want to start an exercise program that has
many health benefits. I have included members reports, in previous newsletters, on how each of them
has benefited from practicing Tai Chi on a regular
basis.
If you are interested in joining our group please contact the office or myself for more details.
We all hope 2016 will be a fun and rewarding year.

Dinner…
Then
Dancing
Your social committee would like a little input from
the membership-at-large. Would you like to see a
Saturday evening piano bar? A games night? A talent show? A magician? Or ventriloquist? A variety
show? Dinner theatre? More dances? We can only
keep you “entertained” if we know what you want!
So write down your suggestions and leave them with
Jonie or Chris at the office and they’ll make sure we
get the info. And to all, good health and much
happiness in 2016.

GIMLI
OPEN 7 DAYS
A WEEK
Wood Carving seems to be where the crowds are
hanging out these days. The attendance at this
popular past time have increased from our resident
“experienced” wood cravers to three tables full of
people. Lots of wood chips everywhere in that room
on Fridays from 1:00 to 3:30.
News from the
Seniors Resource Program
Are you living alone or with
an ill spouse and would like
the comfort of knowing that
help is only a press of a button away? If so then Lifeline
is just the right thing for you.
Lifeline is monitored 24
hours a day, seven days a
week. Responder’s phone numbers are programmed in the Lifeline unit and when help is
needed, you just press the button you wear and
someone from the monitoring centre will call your
responder to come and help or the ambulance can
also be dispatched if needed. For a reasonable
one time installation fee and low monthly monitoring fee, Lifeline will give you and your family piece
of mind. If you’re interested in the Lifeline or know
of someone who might benefit from this service
then please call the office at 642-7297.
