BUILDING & MAINTENANCE
Everett Lloyd
The crawl space in the Coffee Spot is finally starting to
dry up. The snow fences are all down and stored for
the Summer. The lawns have been trimmed once or
twice to get started and the Petal Pushers are starting
to plant their flowers.
We received the new cooler in the Main Kitchen and
still have to unwrap and set it up.
The Bingo machine has been giving us some measure
of trouble these past months, could be the moisture in
the air, we are monitoring it closely.
Time for Golf now, hope everyone enjoys their Summer!

IN AND OUT
Once there was a family of skunks who lived in a
hollow tree. There were two baby skunks. Their
names were In and Out.
Now whenever In went out, Out came in, and
whenever Out went out, In came in. If In happened
to be in and wanted to go out, he would not go out
until Out came in. And if Out happened to be in,
and wanted to go out, he would not go out until In
came in.
One day a big storm blew up, and the mother and
father skunks were worried about their children. So
they quickly looked around to see whether In was
in and Out was out or if Out was in and In was out.
Out happened to be in right then. The mother
skunk said to Out, "Out, go out and bring In in,
please. I'm worried about him."
Out said, "Sure thing, Mama." So Out went out,
and for the very first time Out and In were out at
the same time. Just a minute or two later Out came
back in, and In came in behind him. For the first
time in a long time In and Out were in at the same
time.
The mother skunk was amazed. "Out, how did you
find your brother so quickly?" she asked.
"Oh, Mama, it was easy," Out said. "In stinked!"
If you could choose between World Peace and Bill
Gates’ money, what color would your Ferrari be?
A sweet little boy surprised his grandmother one
morning and brought her a cup of coffee. He made it
himself and was so proud. He anxiously waited to
hear the verdict on the quality of the coffee. The
grandmother had never in her life had such a bad cup
of coffee, and as she forced down the last sip she noticed three of those little green army guys in the bottom of the cup. She asked, "Honey, why would three
little green army guys be in the bottom of my
cup?" Her grandson replied, "You know grandma, it's
like on TV, 'The best part of waking up is soldiers in
your cup.' "

THE CHOICE
An old punster made the king the butt of most of
his jokes. Consequently, he was loved by the
people, but hated by the king.
The king endured the ridicule for months. One
day, after hearing people in the streets repeating
some of their favorite quips, he had had enough.
He had the following statement posted around
the royal city:
"By royal decree, anyone who tells a pun will
be hanged by the neck until he is dead."
The old punster kept telling his jokes, including
puns. He was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to be hanged at dawn in a week's time.
The king's conscience was pricked. He didn't
want to execute a citizen for merely telling jokes.
So the king sent a message to the hangman on
the morning of the execution, telling him that the
old man was to be given a pardon if he promised
never to tell another pun.
The old man couldn't imagine living in a world
where he could not tell a pun. So he replied, "No
noose is good news," and died gladly.

THE SECRET BOX
A preacher was told by his doctor that he had only a
few weeks left to live.
He went home feeling very sad, and when his wife
heard the sad news she said to him, "Honey, if there's
anything I can do to make you happy, tell me."
The preacher answered, "You know, dear, there's that
box in the kitchen cabinet with what you always
called "your little secret" in it and you said you never
would want me to open it as long as you lived. Now
that I'm about to go home to be with the Lord, why
don't you show me what's in that secret box of
yours?"
The preacher's wife got out the box and opened the
lid.
It contained $10,000 and three eggs.
"What are those eggs doing in the box?" the preacher
asked. "Well, Honey," she replied, "every time your
sermon was really bad I put an egg in the box.
Now the preacher had been preaching for over forty
years, and seeing only three eggs in that old shoe
box, he started to feel very proud about himself and it
warmed his soul.
"And what about that $10,000?"" he asked.
"Oh, you see," she whispered softly, "every time
there were a dozen eggs in the box, I . . . ummm . . .
sold them . . . and put a dollar in the box."
THE CONTEST
There was a man who entered a local paper's pun
contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that
at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no
pun in ten did.
GOLF
Dave McNabb
It took until May 26th for us to get our opening day at
Golf. The weather has not been very kind on Mondays. Our opening day had fine golf weather—not
too hot and not too cold.
Although the weather was co-operative it will take a
few games to catch up to last years quality.
First Place, with an even score were Vera Ralke,
June Isfeld, Bill Morrison, & Warren Wenzel.
A tie for Second Place at minus 2 were teams of Rod
Allen, Vaughan Cochrane and Desa Bobbie, and the
team of Mike Devlin, Julie Sass, Laurie Stirton and
Larry Weber.
Closest to the hole on number one were Neva St.
Dennis and Jack Klassen .
We hope that the weather will be good through the
month of June.

VOLUNTEER DIRECTOR
Gloria Mattson
Seventy-eight members attended the Volunteer Appreciation Event held on May 1st at the Centre. I am both
amazed at, and grateful for Vera Ralke’s event planning skills. A Big Thanks to Vera’s team of Fred Ralke, Lil
Page, Joan Sigurdson, Linda Shipman, Lyyne Wall, Maureen Anderson, Linda Cochrane, and Joanne McNabb for
their time and effort. An average of 900 jobs were filled each month to a total of approximately 9,500 volunteer
hours in 2013.Thank you to all the volunteers that were unable to attend the appreciation day this year.
Thank you to all the committee and team leaders for encouraging and mentoring new volunteers as needed. Last,
but not least, a big thank you to Jonie and Chris in the office for recruiting and organizing the volunteers using their
computers, sign-up boards and emails, etc.
Special Moments!
May 16th & 17th was our 7th year running of the New
Horizons Yard Sale.
As in past years, the sale was successful however a
little down from previous years. The 12 volunteers
that came out each day did an excellent job of pricing
and displaying the merchandise. Great job volunteers and a big thank you to all! Volunteer hours
totaled just over 98 hours this year.
Also a big thank you to all who donated items for the
sale. Without your donations this event would not
happen. Proceeds from the sale go back into the
Centre.
Thanks to Rod for the use of his truck for pick ups
and Les did an excellent job with signage.
As you can see from the pic a happy group doing
their job. Also some took time for coffee break and
some were trying out the exercise machine. Although
we were able to get someone else to collect the
money, we missed the presence of Peter Froese at
his usual spot.
Many thanks to the staff for their assistance in taking
calls, making signs, etc.
Taoist Tai Chi Society
of Canada—Gimli Branch
Lina Allegro
The window of opportunity is coming
up for the Beginners session of Gimli
Tai chi. It starts on June 3, 2014.
The Taoist Tai Chi™ internal arts are
specifically designed to improve holistic health. The significant degree of
turning and stretching in each of the
movements, combined with the
adaptability of the form to suit individual needs, are just some of the factors that contribute to
its focus on restoring, improving and maintaining health.
The health benefits include: improved circulation, balance and posture; increased strength and flexibility;
and reduced stress. With regular practise, theTaoist Tai
Chi™ internal arts reach deep inside the body to benefit
the entire physiology including the tendons, joints, spine,
connective tissue and internal organs. It restores the calmness and peace of mind that is often lost through the desires and anxieties of daily life.
Although not a substitute for proper medical treatment, the
Tai Chi that we offer can help to improve the health and
quality of life for people dealing health conditions such as
poor circulation, high blood pressure, arthritis, back pain,
joint immobility, respiratory problems, digestive disorders, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia
and many others.

GIMLI
OPEN 7 DAYS
A WEEK
Gimli High School Senior Jazz Band will be holding it’s Annual “Jazz at the Dock” on June 6th from
Noon to 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. If you happen to be in the area stop by for a listen.
Well here we are, back from our final casino trip till
the fall. Our thanks to Bruce and Brenda entertaining us with stories and bingo. To our bus driver Al,
we thank you. A good time was had by all, some
better than others. We had some winners big and
small. Some enjoyed the pool while others had
tours of the area by Danny on a golf cart. We got a
glimpse of the inside of the cabins. They are rented
at $200 a night but can sleep 8 people. All amenities are in the cabin and staff come in to clean. All
you have to bring is your food and many go to the
casino to eat since it is so reasonable. Thursday
buffet was steak with all the trimmings for $5.00,
how can you beat that. On the second day we enjoyed shopping in Devils Lake. A new Super Wallmart is due to open in July. On our return home we
enjoyed the US Duty Free store.
I would like to thank all who have booked the tours
out of Gimli. Without you there would not be a need
for bringing a bus out of the city. In the fall we are
looking at trips to Shooting Star and Northern
Lights. Congratulations to Bruce & Brenda of B&B
Lucky Tours on the birth of a granddaughter in Taiwan called Makayla Maggie.
Have a good summer and enjoy the weather and
keep active.
