A welcome from the
Executive Producer
Good evening and welcome to the Grand Final.
This is the fourth time that Jack and I
have staged Miss Universe New Zealand
and tonight you can expect our biggest and
best show yet. We are delighted that this year
TV3’s online service 3NOW is live-streaming
the show.
Tonight’s show is, of course, going to be
packed with the excitement, tension and the
happiness that are always a feature of this
event. We are delighted to be able to share
with you the special performance that took
place earlier today for the contestants by the
cast of the International Smash Hit Oh What
a Night!, who are now on tour throughout
New Zealand. We welcome NZ diva Ali
Harper who squeezes us in between sell-out
performances of her one-woman show, which
earlier this year she performed in New York.
Frankie Stevens joins us in two capacities tonight, as both a judge and a performer, as
he is well qualified in both disciplines. And, finally, we are honoured that Kiwi superstar
Stan Walker is also joining us ahead of his New Zealand tour later in the year.
This year, all of our judges are home-grown and very much at the top of their game in
regard to knowing what makes a winner. In addition to Frankie, they are Evana Patterson,
Areena Deshpande, Anna Jobsz, and Samala Robinson. The judges’ vote counts for
50 per cent of the overall result, with the public voting making up the remainder.
Tonight, we will take you overseas to the Philippines where we once again held the
finalists’ retreat. This visit was made possible through the generous support of one of
key Platinum Partners, BENCH/, and our great friend Ben Chan. It also seems likely
that our winner tonight will return to Manila for the International Final and so we’ve
promised them a few more days at the luxurious Plantation Bay Resort.
I must take this opportunity to say a very sincere thank you to all of our sponsors—
they all feature in this programme. Their support is crucial to our success and so I urge
you in turn to support them.
And finally on behalf of Miss Universe New Zealand, we would like to say a very
heartfelt and sincere thank-you to each and every one of our finalists. They have all
worked extremely hard on their entrepreneurial endeavours, and it now time for them
to take to the stage and enjoy the culmination of their journey. We wish them all the
very best of luck.

Message from Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach,
Miss Universe 2015
Before my reign, it had been 42 years since the the Philippines had won the title of
Miss Universe. After I was crowned, my mind immediately went to the Philippines and
all those who were at home supporting me. I was overjoyed at having the chance to
represent them and make them proud.
Having the opportunity to work hand in hand with charitable organizations to help
make a difference has been an incredible part of my year so far, and I am so thankful
for the chance to impact others in a positive way. Representing both the Philippines
and those who cannot speak for themselves is a privilege that I do not take lightly.
To all those competing in Miss Universe New Zealand, I wish you the best of luck.
Be kind to one another and enjoy the amazing experience you’re going to share.
You are all confidently beautiful with a heart.
All of my love,
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach

The Miss Universe Organization

MISS UNIVERSE
For over 60 years, women from across the globe have travelled to compete
for the title of Miss Universe. Their journey starts here, where one lucky
contestant will have the opportunity to represent her country at the annual
Miss Universe pageant.
Our organization is uniquely placed to affect change and provide the
women who are a part of our system with the skill sets they need to be
the successful leaders of tomorrow. Now under the new ownership and
guidance by WME|IMG, our global reach is maximized to extend amazing
opportunities to these talented young women.
Research has shown the number-one obstacle for women to overcome
in reaching their potential in any endeavour is a lack of self-confidence. I am
proud to be part of a company which challenges women to get out of their
comfort zones, push their personal envelopes and be fearless.
Our National Directors have provided continued support to our
organization this year and through their efforts, the contestants have
travelled for the opportunity to grow as women and be confident in any
goal they choose to pursue. While we are a competition, the women who
participate also learn to help one another and create a network of friends
and colleagues on which to draw support.
The Miss Universe Organization’s mission is to empower every woman
to have the confidence to sand in any forum, anywhere, and declare, ‘I am
confident, I am secure, I am comfortable in my own skin, I am powerful …
and that is what makes me beautiful.’
A confident woman is a beautiful woman.

very difficult for us not to return in 2017.

thousands already have. Four years on,
the profile and the support you give
us has reached a level that we never
imagined. Even looking back to the glory
days of the ’80s, we are of course now
global with our live stream tonight being
viewed right across the planet.
Without our sponsors, supporters,
volunteers, performers, and, of course,
our finalists, we would not be able to
support Variety—the Children’s Charity,
and they should each be incredibly proud
of their achievements. This year, we have
crossed the $100,000 mark in donations
to this wonderful New Zealand charity,
which helps deserving Kiwi kids.
Thank you to

Miss Universe NZ
Introduction from Miss Universe New Zealand
Your entertainers
Stan Walker is one of the outstanding
talents of our generation. Singer, actor,
and television personality, Stan’s
undeniable vocal-gift and engaging boynext-door charm have already resulted
in him successfully releasing top-selling
singles (the double-platinum ‘Black Box’
and gold ‘Unbroken’) and a platinumselling album (Introducing Stan Walker).
He has won five New Zealand Music
Awards, and five ARIA nominations.
He has collaborated with some of the
world’s leading producers, as well as
UK singer Pixie Lott and New Zealand
rapper Young Sid, on his album From
the Inside Out. A winner of Australian Idol, Stan has also judged two seasons of
The X Factor NZ. Unsurprisingly, with his talent, it is no surprise to learn he has a
movie career, too, including his acclaimed role as Turei in Mt Zion, and most recently
featuring in Taika Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It is a privilege to have him
perform tonight at the Miss Universe New Zealand Grand Final.
Frankie Stevens, NZOM, started his professional
career at 16, moving to Sydney, before heading
to London in 1970, where he won Opportunity
Knocks six times in a row. He sang at both the
Palladium and Albert Hall, and represented Great
Britain in several song contests. Moving to the US,
he performed in Las Vegas and sang with some
of the biggest stars of the era, and on returning
to the UK, was signed by CBS Records and
appeared on numerous TV specials. A stint in
Hawai’i followed, before Frankie returned to New
Zealand in 1982, where he continued to tour and
perform. He judged NZ Idol for three seasons,
acted in The Matrix 2, and today continues to
entertain internationally. He serves as a trustee for
the charity, Across the Water New Zealand, to aid
children who lost their loved ones in the Boxing
Day Tsunami. In addition to performing tonight,
Frankie will also be on our esteemed judging panel.
In the 1960s, four scrappy young
men from New Jersey—Frankie Valli,
Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy
De Vito—had the magic sound that
propelled them from singing under
streetlights to singing in spotlights. With
songs like ‘Sherry’, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’
and ‘Walk Like a Man’, the quartet found
itself at the top of the charts. However,
personal and professional problems
threatened to tear the group apart.
No such thing with these four lads
from Oh What a Night!. They sound
just like the originals and they come direct from the showrooms of Las Vegas. You’ll
hear the authentic, sublime harmonies of New Jersey’s finest. The internationally
acclaimed American cast perform the entire show—one classic hit after another
including solo hits that range from the exuberant rock ’n’ roll nostalgia of Grease, to
spine-tingling show-stealers such as My Eyes Adored You.
TONIGHT’S ENTERTAINERS

Erinmarie Phillips, 20, was born and raised in South
Africa. She moved to New Zealand with her family in
2002. Erinmarie enjoys travelling, sport and new foods.
She works as a teacher aide, a lifeguard and volunteer
first responder for St John Ambulance in Timaru. It
is through these jobs that she is more easily able to
translate her passion for children and their families
by creating a better future for Kiwi kids. After being
given the opportunity to work alongside Variety—the
Children’s Charity, she is now able to help in a way she
never thought she would.
The Miss Universe New Zealand competition has
helped Erinmarie build confidence and provided her with
the platform she needs to support women and children
around New Zealand to follow their dreams. Ultimately
Erinmarie has been very humbled and fortunate to be
a part of the Miss Universe New Zealand journey and
continues to rely on God throughout the remainder of
her journey regardless of the outcome.

From the age of nine, Larissa Allen has spent her
life speaking out publicly about the topics others
find hard talking about, including child abuse, peer
pressure, depression and body image. Larissa, now 25,
continues to volunteer within the platform she feels most
passionate about—youth. She hopes to complete her
recruitment process with the NZ Police to help take this
passion further.
Larissa is a Tauranga local who graduated with a
Bachelor of Communication Studies and currently
works as a marketing and event manager.
An adventurer and adrenaline junkie at heart, she
always has something interesting on the go, whether it’s
trekking the Tongariro Crossing, jumping out of a plane
or diving with sharks. When she has had her adrenaline
fix, you’ll catch her in the kitchen baking delicious treats,
acting in the local theatre show or mentoring students.
Larissa thanks her parents for showing her that
working with people and helping others is the greatest
gift you can receive.
‘My journey in Miss Universe New Zealand has allowed me to grow as a person and create
Jasjot Kaur
everlasting memories.’
Miss Universe New Zealand 2016
Jolita Gray, 20, is an art and design student from
Christchurch who believes that creativity is important in
everyday life. Receiving certificates in both Beauty Skills
Introductory at Aoraki Polytechnic, and Graphic Design
Process and Methods at Yoobee, she is currently
working towards her Certificate in Art and Design at ARA
Institute, hoping to find a career in the creative industry.
Jolita has always been very adventurous and spon
taneous, doing bungee jumping at 14 and sky-diving at
16. She loves to participate in netball, wakeboarding and
hiking. She also loves to bake goodies for family and
friends, make people laugh, keep fit and healthy, and
shop (because what girl doesn’t like retail therapy?)
One thing she wishes to do is empower women to
be comfortable and confident in their own skin. She
reminds herself and others to ‘Take every opportunity
you are given in life because it can lead to bigger and
better things—just like this journey has for me: getting
to travel to a foreign country with diverse girls, making
new friends and having the most fun I ever have, has
been a one in a life-time experience that now remains
memorable forever.’
MEET THE TOP 20
Jade Norman
Jade Norman, 24, from Auckland, is New Zealandborn and raised. She enjoys the outdoors and spending
time with family and friends.
Jade is an animal lover who has ridden horses and
competed in equestrian events for 12 years. She now
enjoys teaching younger riders and says it is extremely
gratifying to be able to share one of her loves as she
watches their confidence and skills grow.
She is a commercial model, has worked as an extra
on TV shows and is currently attending acting classes
which is quickly becoming her greatest passion. ‘I am
very dedicated to the things I am passionate about
which is something I would bring to Miss Universe New
Zealand if I were to win. I believe that life is too precious
for what-ifs and that everyone should go after their goals
with everything they have.’
Tania Dawson, 23, is a secondary school drama and
music studies teacher, from Auckland. She entered
Miss Universe New Zealand to challenge herself and to
live by what she preaches. ‘As a teacher, we encourage
our students to take chances and not to fear failure. The
challenge of overcoming self-doubt is what drew me to
the competition,’ she says.
If she were to win Miss Universe New Zealand,
she would advocate on behalf of education. ‘I believe
that the most important investment a young person
can make is their own education. If they can build a
strong foundation that provides more opportunities for
academic success, better jobs and provides financial
stability, then they have a higher chance of happiness
and success in life. With age beauty can fade, but your
mind can always become wiser.’
Tania rates the best part of her Miss Universe New
Zealand experience to date was the people she shared it
with. ‘The other 19 finalists were amazing on the retreat
and each one has so much to offer. We have all made
some lifelong friendships,’ she says.
Tania Dawson
‘Being given the opportunity to make someone smile is what I’ll never forget. I will take the Miss
Rebecca Hooker
Universe New Zealand retreat experience away with me forever.’

Tijana Selak, 24, was born in Europe, and raised in
Wellington. When she was five, her parents decided to
make the big move to be able to create a better future for
the family. She has a natural love for travel and travelled
all over the world—she believes you meet everyone for
a reason and visiting new places and cultures helps you
gain a new perspective.
Tijana works as a customer service representative at
Westpac and as a dance teacher. Her biggest passions
are dancing and kids, so being able to share her love
for dance while also inspiring the younger generation is
her perfect job. She’s thankful to have this opportunity
with Miss Universe New Zealand which gives her more
of a voice to be able to reach out to people and be that
positive influence everyone needs.
Being surrounded by so many empowering girls
has been refreshing and motivating for her, and says
this completion has been a great example of women
supporting one another.
‘What stood out to me the most was the outstanding resort and hospitality at Plantation Bay.
Being surrounded by 11 acres of paradise with buffet meals every morning for breakfast and
Jolita Gray
don’t get me started on the lagoon, I couldn’t find the end of it!’

Pun-loving, song-writing, smoothie-making 20-year-old
Brittany Rees-Thomas, from Wellington, spends
her weekdays working in insurance and her weekends
volunteering as a youth leader and musician at her church.
Having her first job at 14, she has always been very driven.
She was the Arts Captain at her college, attaining the
Victoria Excellence and Drama Scholarships. Part time,
she is pursuing acting and singing. Although Brittany
loves performing, nothing beats working with people.
‘There is so much hurt and stress out there. I think we can
forget that we have the power to bring joy into someone’s
life, just by sharing it around.’ She believes it’s important
to take time for yourself as well. Baking, drawing and
going to the gym are her avenues of de-stressing.
‘My great grandmother had a saying, “Good, better,
best, never let it rest. Until your good is better, and your
better best.” We should never become complacent, we
should constantly look to do better and be better. Not for
ourselves but for others. This journey has been one of self
discovery and absolute fun. These girls have taught me
so much and I have grown in faith and in love.’

Hannah has been brought up a keen outdoors person
with a great love of animals. Not only does Hannah ride
and compete in showjumping but she also has her junior
driver’s license to race harness racehorses.
Community work is an important thing for Hannah,
so she gives back by instructing at one of the local
Pony Club’s as well as coaching a college netball
team. Community work continues to look good for
Hannah in the future as she is currently training in the
recruitment for the New Zealand Police Force and
hopes to be working with Child Services, then on to

part of Hannah’s life, and she believes that this should
be an important aspect for everyone.
Camilla Hand, 22, lives in Auckland and works fulltime as a Trainee Clinical Perfusionist in heart surgery.
Camilla loves her job which involves pumping blood and
oxygen around the patient’s body to keep them alive
whilst the heart is stopped during cardiac surgery.
Camilla graduated last year with a Bachelor of
Science majoring in physiology, and is currently studying
and training for her postgraduate diploma in clinical
perfusion. Camilla is a passionate, motivated individual
who has a heart for helping others, volunteering at the
children’s hospital and the local retirement home before
obtaining her job at the hospital. Camilla especially loves
how the Miss Universe New Zealand competition is very
involved in Variety—the Children’s Charity and how it
focuses on self-empowerment, confidence and being
beautiful both inside and out.
This competition is something Camilla feels very
privileged to be a part of, as not only has she been able
to experience the beautiful Philippines and made lifetime
friends, she has also been put her out of her comfort

MEET THE Hosts
Your hosts
Stephen McIvor is very well known to SKY Sport audiences
throughout the country, having served as senior anchor since
its first day of broadcast in 1991. He’s covered every sport
imaginable, including the Olympics and the Rugby World
Cup, and has a passion for television. As he puts it, ‘I have
a love for live television any day of the week. Whether it be
studio or outside broadcast, poodle racing to test rugby
league, that’s where I flourish.’ Last year, we saw Stephen
host Miss Universe New Zealand, and we’re delighted to
have him back as MC. Stephen is married and the proud
father of three children.
Sonia Gray is accustomed to telling New Zealand who has
won each week, as Lotto’s main presenter, but tonight the
win she’ll announce is of a different kind entirely. Sonia hosted
for us last year, too, as the other half of our dynamic on-stage
duo. With Zimbabwean and Kiwi pākehā roots, her career
has spanned modelling through to acting, including roles
in Shortland Street, Xena, Hercules and Samoan Wedding,
and Sonia is an active spokeswoman for the Mental Health
Foundation. Sonia is married with twin daughters, Inez and
Thandie.
Our choreographer
Born and raised in New Zealand, Jane Strickland spent
many years nurturing her craft. Her passion for performing
arts has taken her around the world, bringing her back to her
motherland only five years ago. Prior to that, Jane spent her
first few years in the industry performing throughout Australia in
both the musical theatre and corporate worlds. Continuing her
urge to travel, Jane then made the move to high seas, working
for Norwegian Cruise Line as a principal singer–dancer. Jane
is thrilled to be back home working alongside some of the
country’s most dedicated entertainers, as well as being a
core dancer and choreographer for one of New Zealand’s top
commercial dance companies, Momentum Productions.
After having a fabulous time working with the Miss Universe New Zealand ladies at
Stiletto Camp, Jane is very much excited to be this year’s choreographer for the Grand
Final and wishes all the contestants the best of luck.
Anna Jobsz has been running her own business, AJPR,
for 11 years, a boutique PR agency that specializes in
lifestyle, fashion, entertainment and hospitality. Anna

MEET THE TOP 20
Sarah Jane Adams, 21, piqued the interest of the
organizers when she wrote, among other things, that she
was a determined young woman—and since meeting
her at Stiletto Camp we’ve no reason to question that.
The personal trainer–fitness instructor hails from Waiau
Pa, and calls herself a family girl at heart who loves to be
outdoors, read and pay it forward to others.
Sarah Jane also aspires to be a police officer or
firefighter. Her 2016 goal of stepping outside my comfort
zone now finds her at the Grand Final of Miss Universe
New Zealand 2016—and she wants to encourage
others to do the same, and be adventurous.
Hannah Jackson, born and raised in the Deep South,
is 19 years old, currently studying Communications
and Music at the University of Otago. You will find her
competing and performing on stage with her singing
and modelling. Communication and beauty are where
Hannah’s passions lie—she has been training in classical
singing since the age of 7. Singing is a huge part of who
Hannah is and how she communicates: this has given
her the confidence to enter Miss Universe New Zealand,
the ability to perform and refined her as a person.
‘If I were to win the prestigious title of Miss Universe
New Zealand 2016, I believe I have the ability to touch
people’s hearts with my warmth, even though I am a girl
from the cold south. I believe I have the communication
skills, unique personality and vibrant energy to promote
our beautiful country, along with encouraging others to
believe in themselves being confidently beautiful, outside
and in,’ she says.
Hannah believes that beauty comes from within: we
all face challenges and opportunities that define who we
are. She believes that we should always strive to be the
best we can be, as being the best version of yourself is
absolutely paramount!

Milena Taryan
Milena Taryan, 24, is based in Wellington, but was
born in Armenia. She moved to New Zealand in 2008
and is proud to call it her home.
She has been doing Latin American and ballroom
dancing since she was three years old. ‘Dancing is a
huge part of my life—if I stop dancing for a while I feel
guilty. It is like a positive medicine for me. I could not
imagine life without dancing.’
In 2011, she was part of the TV series, So You Think
You Can Dance?, and recently she started adjudicating
competitions. She considers herself to be a creative and
artistic person.
She has won many awards in hairdressing
competitions for her creative hair designs and she also
designs ballroom dance jewellery.
She says that entering Miss Universe New Zealand
was one of the best decisions she has made. ‘Through
the MUNZ journey I have learnt so much and it has
allowed me to grow as a person in many different ways.’
Seresa Lapaz, 24, who hails from Auckland, is a
graduating student with a double degree in Bachelor of
Health Sciences and Bachelor of Science in nutrition.
Seresa recently had the opportunity to work for Diabetes
New Zealand where she thoroughly enjoyed sharing her
passion with the wider community.
Poverty alleviation and children’s education are
causes which she holds close to her heart. Her work
for various charities have given her a platform to voice
out her beliefs. Seresa gained recognition from the
Filipino community and was the recipient of the youth
community work–service award at the Filipino–Kiwi
Hero Awards 2016.
Although she was born in the Philippines, she
considers New Zealand home. It is where she spent
most of her life, moulded her identity, and grew to be
the confidently ataahua person she is today.

Gabrielle Kerdemelidis is a 24-year-old registered
nurse from Christchurch. She specializes in burns, trau
matic wounds and reconstructive plastic surgery, and
is studying towards her master’s degree to become a
nursing practitioner. ‘I grew up spending a lot of time
accompanying my beloved father in and out of hospital
through his battle with cancer. It was from a young age
that I looked up to the staff taking care of him, and I then
set my sights on being in the field.’
Her mother, a health care assistant who specializes
in dementia care, also inspired her. ‘It is the passion I
have for caring that has driven me to enter Miss Universe
New Zealand. I have had ongoing support from family
and friends who truly believe I will embody the position
greatly, and for that I am so grateful.
‘Miss Universe New Zealand has helped me to connect
to my community and enabled me to raise money for
Variety. Taking part in the Entrepreneurial Challenge has
taught me how to approach organizing events, which is
something that I now feel confident to do.’
