Early that morning they boarded one of the coaches for their 90 minute road trip to discover the story of Salvado—200 years after his birth. The staff had been told they would be walking where Salvado had walked, seeing what he had seen and praying where he had prayed in New Norcia. For many of the staff it was their first visit to the Benedictine town and there were plenty of questions and excitement leading up to this day. For others it was a return to a familiar place where some had childhood memories and others tales of impressing overseas tourists by taking them there to WA's own little bit of Spain. The whole trip had really been due to an idea that Father Jesus Bello, the Duncan Street Chaplain had to make the trip in this bicentennial year. With the geneous help of Toni, Sister Carmel and Dom Chris the day took shape. It was topped off by the catering team's delicious work in creating a welcoming morning tea and stupendous roast dinner for lunch. We all had the chance to visit the new displays in the museum, have a town tour and noon prayers with the monks in the Abbey Church. Before everyone knew it the day was over and it was time to get back on the road to Perth. Being in New Norcia enabled us to gain a greater appreciation of the life and times of Salvado and what was able to begin in New Norcia and also the wonderful hospitality and good work that continues there today. Francisco was one of the Spanish lay monks who helped Rosendo Salvado establish Australia’s only monastic town. The monks are commemorating the bicentenary of the birth of Salvado throughout 2014 so were particularly delighted to host the reunion of his family in this special year. Ventura, a stone cutter by trade, arrived in Western Australia in 1853. He worked with Salvado to establish the mission, eventually leaving in 1856 to work mainly in farming, apart from a period in the 1890s when he spent time pearling at Shark Bay. He would continue to correspond with Salvado throughout his life. His letters are preserved in New Norcia’s extensive archive and there are entries in Salvado’s diaries referencing him. Francisco and Catherine’s great granddaughter, Patricia Mills, travelled from Bluff Point, near Geraldton, for the family gathering. “I loved the reunion,” said Mrs Mills. “I felt such joy catching up and sharing memories with my cousins and their children. Some I hadn’t seen for more than 30 years!” “New Norcia was the perfect location. It was great to see the younger generations being so interested in their forbears, Francisco and Catherine Ventura.” Great great grandson, John Kagi, agreed: “This reunion was the first to include all branches of the Ventura descendants and the first to be held in New Norcia. Being able to hold it in the bicentenary year of Bishop Salvado’s birth, and in July when the countryside surrounding the Monastery is at its best, made it very special. “The success of the weekend was a tribute to the hospitality of the Benedictine community and our thanks go to them and their dedicated staff, all of whom were a delight to work with,” said Mr Kagi. A few staff went by car but most staff travelled on a coach and were heard to say “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Some of the staff had actually attended boarding school in New Norcia in their younger days, so it was a walk down memory lane for them. There were also a number who had never been there before. The countryside was lovely, beautiful and green. We were given an insight into the Rule of St Benedict. For many, it was an eye-opener, understanding and learning how the monks live. We were able to experience some of their prayer times and Mass in the beautiful church. Our spiritual selves were challenged with Lectio Divina and Listening with the Ear of the Heart. Staff from Sacred Heart Primary School outside St. Gertrude’s College NEWSLETTER TITLE PAGE New Norcia, being a Monastic Town has a lot of history and an eerie feeling of peace which is occasionally shattered by a cattle truck or tourist cars passing through the middle. What a pity that middle road cannot be diverted around the outskirts!!!! Possibly the only downside was that because we were such a large group, it meant that we were separated for accommodation to either side of that main highway. A couple of staff were on crutches following holiday accidents and with the addition of rain, it made getting around slightly difficult. However we did manage to support local traders, and were also appreciative of the staff responsible for our meals and tours. After our dinner in the evening, we took part in a DRUMMING workshop, getting into the Rhythm of the Heart. We found that although we all make different noises, we can march together to the beat of the drums!!
