Karen Storm, Midland’s Career Education Supervisor
The saying, “everything happens for a reason,”
has special meaning for Midland’s Supervisor
of Career Education and Student Support
Programs, Karen Storm. While employed by
another special education school, she ran in
the 1980 Midland Run event and had no idea
that 12 years later she would join the Midland
family and participate in the Run as an employee for the following two decades and
counting.
behavior management program and collaborates with staff to develop, maintain and
implement behavior plans for students.
“The goal of behavior management at
Midland is not for teachers to control the
students’ behaviors, but rather to teach the
students to manage themselves,” explains
Karen. “As students near graduation, a successful job placement seems to have less to
do with academic levels and more to do with
Karen, who holds a M.Ed., teacher of the being able to get along with people and

psychology from Douglass College, believes “Helping students land jobs in their home

Jersey state hiring freeze and I no longer had a
job,” explains Karen. “So I started checking the
want ads and there it was – an opening for a
supervisor at the Midland School.”
Karen’s experience working with people with
autism and her behavior management background helped her land the position. “I was so
excited when I got the job,” says Karen. “I had
never worked at such a large school with so
many students and staff and in such a nice
facility. I loved it from day one and never
looked back!”
As supervisor, Karen’s responsibilities extend
far beyond supervising the support ofice,
teachers and aides. Karen oversees Midland’s

Citizenship Award at Midland’s Award
Ceremony on June 21.
In addition to all this, Karen played a key role
in developing Midland’s community living
program and the super senior program. She
currently chairs various committees, coordinates the staff training program, coaches
“Midland Miler” walking groups and serves
as liaison of the Parent’s Association and
helps execute their annual events.
This past June, Karen planned her 20th
Midland prom. “I never went to my own high
school prom, but have more than made
up for it by attending 20 at Midland,” jokes
Karen, who is proud to have never repeated
a prom theme. “I hope to keep my streak
going,” adds Karen, who says the most
important part about prom is making it a
special and fun evening for the students who
inspire her each day.
“Midland students are amongst the hardest
working students I have ever come across,”
says Karen. “Their perseverance and determination in spite of their disabilities is why I
love to come to work.”
Over the course of her career at Midland,
Karen says she’s developed special bonds
with many students and learned as much from
them as she hopes they’ve learned from her.
“I also can’t tell you how much I’ve learned
from the Midland staff—they amaze me,”
adds Karen. “I always say what sets Midland
apart is how each student is taken under
someone’s wing, from our Principal on down.
And that’s what makes Midland more than a
place to work—it’s my second home.”
From The
President & CEO,
Stephen Bruce
I began my tenure at Midland on
May 13, 2013 excited about joining
such a wonderful organization and
team. Since then, I have continually
been impressed by Midland’s caring
and dedicated staff, the quality of
our program and the children and
adults that we serve. I feel honored
and privileged to lead such an organization.
In addition to providing a continuum
of quality programs, Midland also
offers its students and adults memorable and fun experiences. In my
first six weeks at Midland, students
and adults participated in a wealth
of activities: shore vacations for our
group home residents, the Midland
Run, a performance of an African
drum troop and the Jungle Book,
the Midland Milers lunch and yearbook signings for our students.
An integral part of the Midland experience is our teaching staff. It is
gratifying to see that our staff is
recognized and celebrated for their
efforts. During the same six week
period, there were a variety of events
recognizing staff: a school wide party
and a BBQ for Philip Gartlan, a staff
appreciation luncheon hosted by the
Parents Association and several planned and surprise parties for staff. At
our Staff Service Awards, 11 members of our community were recognized for their service to Midland
ranging from 10 to 40 years!
For me, the most moving experience
during my time here has been
Graduation. On June 14, twenty students graduated and gave heartfelt
speeches thanking those that helped them with this achievement.
Prior to graduation, 60 percent of
our seniors had already secured jobs.
This is in keeping with Midland’s
strong tradition of graduate employment. Over the past 18 years, 65
percent of our students have found
jobs prior to graduation. Moreover,
an impressive 77 percent of people
who graduated within the past 18
years are still employed!
In August we will celebrate another
auspicious occasion with the opening of our sixth group home. Five
Midland graduates will be taking up
residence in Branchburg. We are excited about this new addition and
look forward to finding opportunities to open new homes and continue to build the Midland community.
It is also gratifying to see how donor
support enhances Midlands programs.
In the past year, our supporters have
made the following technological
additions a reality: iPads for every
classroom, a SMART Table and new
Smart Board for our Program Center,
a new intercom system and sound
field amplification systems in several
classrooms. Generous grants have
also enabled us to add safety features such as an electronic lift for
the Health Office to lift students in
wheelchairs and intruder locks for
every classroom. Donations have also
supported our After School Program,
Super Senior Program and Midland
Helping Hands.
While Midland has a lot to celebrate,
we still face some challenges as many
students are kept in district and our
students needs are becoming more
involved.
I look forward to working with you
all to meet these challenges and to
continue to build upon our excellent
programs.

The Gartlan
Celebration A Resounding Success!
The Philip M. Gartlan Retirement Celebration was a huge
success thanks to the hard work of the Celebration Committee and the generous support of our sponsors, families,
staff and friends. We’re proud to report that 346 people
attended the June 1st event and it was a very special
evening for a very special man.
During the program, Phil was given gifts of appreciation
from the Board of Trustees, the Midland Alumni Association and the Midland Parent’s Association. Senator Kip
Bateman presented Phil with an official proclamation of
service to the special education community and Midland
Corporation Board President, Dan O’Connell unveiled a
portrait of Phil that will be displayed in Midland’s Gathering Hall, alongside the Founding parents, the Hardensteins,
and Former Director/Founder, Dr. Edward Scagliotta.
We will all miss you and we will never
forget you, Phil. Enjoy this new and
exciting chapter of your life!

Midland Dedicates
Rock Wall to Criss
On May 17, Midland dedicated the
rock climbing wall to Mr. Keith
Criss, who retired last year from the
P.E. Department after teaching for
38 years at Midland. A plaque was
hung on the rock wall in his honor
that reads, “The Keith Criss "Reaching Higher" Climbing Wall – Honoring his 38 years of Service and
Commitment to Midland students.”
His family joined the Midland staff
in congratulating him for this achievement during the award ceremony.
During his 38 years at Midland,
Keith worked to create and advance
an adapted physical education (APE)
program that includes intramural
basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, cheerleading, and softball, along
with other life-long recreational pursuits, such as golf, swimming, dance,
rock-climbing, horseback riding, pingpong, track and field, Special Olympics, and venturing.
Embedded in each of these unique
APE activities is Keith’s philosophy
to give all students the opportunity
to excel and develop both individual and team skills. This wellrounded approach allows students
at Midland to form fitness habits
that stay with them for life—being
active, eating healthy and most importantly, always trying their best.

That’s why Keith can be proud of
his 38 years. His dedication truly
improved the lives around him. He
will be remembered as the teacher
who taught his students that the
most important skill any athlete can
have is a ‘can do’ attitude.
So it is with much gratitude and
affection that the Midland rock
climbing wall is now dedicated to
Keith Criss—an outstanding educator, role model and teammate.

MAS Residential
Set to Open Sixth
Group Home in Branchburg
This coming September, Midland
Adult Services (MAS) will open its
sixth group home on Parsonage
Hill Road in Branchburg, N.J. The
six bedroom, three bath colonial
situated on a quiet tree-lined street,
will become home to five men that
are Midland School graduates.
“The last time we opened a new
group home was back in 2004,”
says Midland’s President and CEO,
Stephen Bruce. “We are excited to
once again expand our residential
program and provide additional
housing options for people with
developmental disabilities who seek
independence and a place of their
own.”
The new home will also add jobs in
the community. Midland plans to
staff the home with a manager,
assistant manager and five direct
support counselors to provide 24hour care.
“Staffing is only one part of the
equation,” says MAS - Residential
Program Director, Stacey Gravina.
“We have to develop the budget,
complete additional renovations and
get the residents ready for the
move all before opening day,” says
Stacey, who describes the new
house as “perfect” for Midland.
“The best part about this property
is it has a fully accessible addition
and it came that way,” says Stacey.
“The family that owned it had two
children who used wheelchairs, so
the home is complete with ramps,
automatic doors and a full accessible
wing on the main floor. These renovations make it an ideal group home
for residents with mobility issues.”

“We’re proud to provide not just a
house, but a home, to individuals
who truly need it,” says Stacey. “It’s
such a positive thing for both the
Midland and Branchburg Township communities.”
On July 17 and July 24, students from Mrs. Serrano’s
Super Senior class took a trip to Murphy Garden Center
and Florist in Stirling, N.J. for learning and career
exploration. Owner, Mr. Danny Murphy and his sister
and business partner, Mrs. Karen Barber, taught the
students all about running a successful florist and
landscaping business. They talked about giving back to
the community, ordering, meeting with customers,
maintaining equipment, preparing for weddings, taking
care of the garden center and overseeing the entire
operation. Thank you to everyone at Murphy Garden
Center for this wonderful opportunity! To read more

Midland Grads Enter the World of Work
On June 14, twenty students graduated from
the Midland School. During the ceremony,
each graduate delivered a speech about their
Midland experiences, the obstacles they have
overcome and the jobs they look forward to
working.
“Prior to graduation, 60 percent of our graduates already had a job lined up,” says Transition
to Work Supervisor, Mrs. Jane Wilkie. “Now 65
percent are employed and the rest are waiting
to hear back from employers, going on interviews, and in some cases, choosing between
multiple job offers. In this economy, this is something we are very proud of here at Midland.”
This year’s graduates have secured positions
in a variety of companies and organizations in
their home communities including, Panera
Bread in Westfield and Rockaway, Stop n Shop
in Edison, BASS Shoes in Flemington, ShopRite
