The Schnirrings taught their daughters, Carolyn Dungan and Kathy Germeraad, the importance of giving back to their community. to file a separate tax return. This is then public information, which means anyone has access to how much you are giving and to whom. You can be more discreet about your giving through the Community Foundation.” For more than 35 years, Carolyn and Dan Dungan and Kathy and Randy Germeraad have been very active in the Springfield community. They have all served on many civic boards and spent countless hours volunteering for community needs. They have also given financially to causes in which they believe strongly. Separate funds allow each family to focus on interests specific to them. For the Dungan family, it is the arts. Carolyn and Dan’s son and daughter, Colin and Caitlin, were very involved with art and music, respectively, throughout school. All three families have established donor-advised funds at the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln. Their family company, Springfield Electric Supply Company, also has a fund established for larger corporate gifts. The families Carrie Germeraad, Scott Germeraad, Colleen Ryan Germeraad, Caitlin Dungan, Colin Dungan decided to work with the “I’m interested in expanding the arts in the Community Foundation to establish funds rather community,” Carolyn Dungan said. “It’s always than starting a private foundation for giving. They one of the first things that is cut in schools. Not felt that it was easier to have the Community every student is great at math and science, Foundation manage their funds while allowing English or history. We think the arts help a student them more flexibility in their giving. They’ve given of their time and money. They firmly believe in philanthropy and nine years ago, they decided working with the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln would be the best way to continue their efforts. “We all benefit. We all have potential needs and if you have the opportunity to help others, you should,” Wilfred Lam said. “The Foundation is a good way to do that.” In 2005, the Springfield couple established the Wilfred and Esther Lam Fund, a donor-advised fund, with the Community Foundation. It’s proven to be a mutually beneficial situation. “We have always been giving and before we would give by other methods. With the Foundation, we have funds totally ready,” Esther Lam said. “It makes it a lot easier to give. It works out well.” The Lams are varied in their charitable giving, although they have focused a large effort throughout the decades on supporting the Chinese Bible Church and Central Illinois Foodbank. Esther Lam served on the Foodbank board for 10 years. She also has been active on the Lincoln Land Community College Foundation, volunteers at the homeless overflow shelter and served on several other organizations throughout the years. Charitable work, not just giving money, is something the Lams believe in greatly. “The Lord is so good to us,” Esther Lam said. “We have so much abundance. You have to ask, how much do you need? …. Writing a check is easy. It’s getting in there and helping out, working.” The Lams' philanthropic beliefs were passed down from their own parents. Esther Lam’s parents were originally from China before political uprising forced them to become refugees in Hong Kong. Despite the upheaval, the parents did not shy away from helping others. Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln VOLUME 11, ISSUE 2 // SUMMER 2014 Wilfred and Esther Lam “My own parents, we have inherited the legacy from them,” Esther Lam said. “Even when they didn’t have much, they shared. I’ve never seen them refuse anyone who needed something.” The Lams instilled a similar belief in their three children, Cynthia, Andrew and Phillip, who are all active in charitable giving. “I am so proud of my children,” Esther Lam said. “Volunteering and giving is not a novelty to them. It’s just a way of life. It’s just what you do. It’s not a burden, it’s a privilege.” The Lams also believe in the strength of individuals supporting charitable causes and the manner in which organizations like the Community Foundation spur that effort. “You have to see what the rest of the world is doing compared to the American system. … America allows each individual person to give to what they think is valuable instead of the government,” Wilfred Lam said. “It makes organizations stronger when they have to be in a situation where people want to support it.” For a list of people or organizations with established funds at the Community Foundation, or for information on how to start your own donor-advised fund, please visit www.CFLL.org or call 217-789-4431. Her responsibilities include organizing, planning, directing, and evaluating the Community Foundation’s financial functions. Betsy comes with a wealth of experience, having spent nearly 17 years at H.D. Smith where she most recently served as Manager of Treasury Operations. Prior to her role at H.D. Smith, she worked in the nonprofit sector for Bradley University’s Controller’s office. “I am excited to start a new challenge through my role at the Community Foundation and feel fortunate to be joining such a respected organization,” said Betsy. “I look forward to working with the team to further grow the Community Foundation and serve the wonderful people of central Illinois!” Betsy holds a B.A. degree in Accounting and an M.B.A., both from the University of Illinois Springfield. She and her husband Mike reside in Rochester with their sons Zane and Sawyer. Betsy replaces Mary Rechner who served as the Community Foundation’s parttime accountant for five years until her retirement in June 2014. We thank Mary for her steadfast dedication to the Community Foundation and wish her and her husband Bob all the best! Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln VOLUME 11, ISSUE 2 // SUMMER 2014 c o n t i n u e d f r o m pa g e “Education is where our hearts are. We feel that a strong educational system is essential in making the community stronger and preparing our children for the future. Having excellent public schools is a factor in attracting new people to Springfield. A strong educational system may also provide an incentive for people to remain in the community.” Mary and Bill Schnirring use their fund to focus more on assisting those in poverty. All three families have participated in the Community Grants Program administered through the Community Foundation. Each year, grant requests from charities are sent to donors with donor-advised funds interested in being exposed to new funding opportunities. This program enables multiple funds to combine resources to provide for a project that might be larger than one fund can support. This is where the Dungan and Germeraad children were first introduced to giving from their families’ funds. When the Community Grant process begins, Carolyn and Kathy circulate the list of grant requests to their children, Caitlin and Colin Dungan, Carrie Germeraad, and Scott and Colleen Ryan Germeraad. Each family decides as a group which grants to fund for that year. “It’s a great way for all of us to learn about the needs of the community and it is always fun to see what the kids’ interests are. Each year the needs change and so do the grants funded,” Carolyn Dungan said. Bill and Mary Schnirring surprised their grandchildren at the end of 2013 by establishing a donor-advised fund for each of them. They now have the opportunity to personalize their giving. Caitlin Dungan and Scott Germeraad and his wife, Colleen, live in the Springfield area. Carrie Germeraad and her cousin, Colin Dungan, live in Chicago. Although they are still interested in the needs in Springfield, they look forward to having the flexibility to donate to causes that interest them in Chicago. Having a donor-advised fund enables you to make donations anywhere, not just in the Springfield area. Colin thinks they can make an impact in each of their communities, Chicago, Springfield, and Rochester. Colin commented, “Having our individual fund is a great way for all of us to pursue our diverse interests and donate to causes we want to 1 support. It is continuing the legacy of giving our parents and grandparents started.” This next generation of philanthropists realizes that monetary donations aren’t the only way to give back to their communities. “Our family is extremely blessed,” said Scott Germeraad, “and this community has been very good to our family. It’s only right to give back and help the community that has given us so much in return. Our parents and grandparents have been great role models. They have taught us that it takes more than just donating money when being supportive. Donating your time and effort is also extremely important in giving back to the community.” Caitlin Dungan expanded upon that theme. She explained, “Giving back is an essential part to having a healthy community. I view ‘giving’ not just in monetary terms, but also in time. Donating money to important causes, funds and organizations is vital to their longevity and mission and giving one’s time can only enhance that donation and truly affect organizations and people in need.” These young philanthropists have acted upon their views. The five cousins have donated their time to Habitat for Humanity, the “Compass Program” through the Family Service Center, United Way, Junior League, The Hope School “Style of Hope,” the Springfield Art Association, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Scott and Colleen Germeraad have also become active in the Community Foundation’s Young Philanthropists and look forward to hosting its next event for families at the Schnirring Farm on September 13. Colleen Germeraad is a member of the Foundation’s Women for Women group that supports causes helping women and children. It seems evident that the idea of philanthropy has truly been embraced by this younger generation. Caitlin commented, “One of my favorite quotes comes from St. Francis of Assisi. He said, ‘For it is in giving that we receive.’” This simple statement is so powerful and absolutely true. Through giving, one can receive so much and be able to have an impact on people’s lives and the chance to make a difference in any community. T H E F O U N D AT I O N • 4 Tryon’s Generosity will continue with Memorial Fund Leon Tryon gave and gave and gave some more. He didn’t need attention or accolades for it. He just did it. That giving spirit inspired his family to recently establish the Leon Tryon Memorial Fund through the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln. “He was a very, very giving person. He gave when no one was looking all the time,” said Doug Skinner, Tryon’s son-in-law. “He gave to so many people and he never made it known to anyone.” “We like the way it is flexible and tax deductible for people who want to give,” Skinner said. “…I want it to be professionally managed and administered. I want it to be something we can call on long-term. (The Community Foundation) is a great spot for establishing something professional.” For more information on donor-advised funds, please contact the Foundation at 217-789-4431. Tryon passed away March 21. The family knew he had a giving spirit, but with each person who went to the memorial service relaying stories of what he had done for them, the family learned more about how giving the farmer from the Morrisonville area was to his friends and neighbors. Skinner, his wife Kari and mother-in-law Linda established the Fund prior to the memorial, allowing mourners to give to the Fund. “(My wife and mother-in-law) were thankful something was going to be there for an ongoing tribute to him,” Doug Skinner said. “I wanted his style of giving and his generosity to carry on.” "Young ministers, senior ministers, he helped all of them and took time to mentor them." The Fund will focus on continuing Tryon’s work with VisionWay Christian School in Taylorville. The school holds classes for pre-K through high school students. Tryon helped found the school and was extremely active in the Taylorville Christian Church, serving as an elder. During his time at the church, he advised a multitude of ministers that passed through the Taylorville area throughout the years. “Young ministers, senior ministers, he helped all of them and took time to mentor them,” Tryon said. The family may choose to use the fund to benefit other entities as time passes. That flexibility and logistical expertise was part of the allure of establishing the fund through the Community Foundation. Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln VOLUME 11, ISSUE 2 // SUMMER 2014 R E P O R T T O T H E C O M M U N I T Y CHAIR’S MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY n behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln, thank you for following and supporting our work over the past year. Like many of you, I’ve enjoyed spending most of my life in central Illinois and have seen a lot of changes occur in the community during that time. Organizations have come and gone while others have thrived, neighborhoods have evolved, school districts have expanded and consolidated, and the economy has faltered and flourished. As our community has changed, I’ve tried to do the same with my approach to giving to issues I am passionate about. If you would, please take a moment to imagine with me. Think of the issue you care about most in your community. Arts and culture? Health and wellness? Senior citizens? Education? Now – imagine a permanent community funding source for that cause. Wherever your passion lies, imagine the ways in which the community could be improved by having an endowment fund to support that issue. As part of its mission to “connect people who care with causes that matter,” the Community Foundation is making a concerted effort to help turn your dreams into a reality. I encourage you to learn more about Field of Interest Funds, which bring you right to the heart of the issue that moves you. By establishing or contributing to a Field of Interest Fund, you can focus your giving on a specific area of concern and put the income from your Fund toward that endeavor – forever. While change is inevitable, it’s encouraging to know that I can help ensure permanent support for the causes I care about the most. I hope you enjoy paging through our 2013 Report to the Community and perhaps become inspired by the variety of ways in which your Community Foundation can connect you to the causes you care about the most! Very truly yours, Katherine S. Today, the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln is one of more than 700 community foundations in the United States, collectively managing more than $48 billion in assets and making grants of approximately $4.5 billion a year to improve life in their communities. There are more than 1,700 community foundations worldwide. T H E F O U N D AT I O N • 1 4 F O U N D AT I O N E V E N T S Women for Women Awards Largest Grant to Date On April 10th Women for Women announced that Mental Health Centers of Central Illinois (MHCCI) is the recipient of its sixth – and largest – annual grant award. The 2014 grant award, totaling $30,000, will support MHCCI’s “MOSAIC Moms” program, which is part of a larger community initiative to transform the way mental healthcare is provided in the Springfield area. Melissa Stalets, director for The Children’s MOSAIC Project, described the robust nature of the program. “We are ecstatic to be able to build upon the successes of the MOSAIC Project,” said Stalets. “MOSAIC Moms will be a robust collaboration among Mental Health Centers of Central Illinois, Springfield Public Schools, Family Service Center, and Community Child Care Connection to address the mental health and wellbeing of women and children who have very limited social support.” MOSAIC Moms will offer three services to help meet the social and emotional needs of low-income single mothers and their children in the Springfield area, including facilitated parent/ child groups, delivery of home-based mental health services, and consultation to home visitors and case managers who work with the target population. In addition to the grant award, three local women were recognized for their tireless dedication to fostering positive change in the lives of others. “Women Helping Women” awards were presented to Karen Hasara, Rachel Kocis and Penny Wollan-Kriel. Special thanks to INB for again hosting the group’s grant reception, and congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients and Women for Women members for making a difference in the lives of women and children in our community! Farley provided keynote remarks at Women for Women’s event, which also featured updates from 2014 grant recipient Mental Health Centers of Central Illinois and Jane Denes, chair of Women for Women’s Steering Committee. By joining Women for Women, members become part of a distinguished and accomplished group of more than 100 women who have combined their financial resources to help local women and families achieve their goals and take control of their lives. Members contribute $1,000 annually to The Women’s Fund – a permanent endowment at the Community Foundation through which annual grants are made. ••• Young Philanthropists were treated to a special kick-off event at the SIU Pearson Museum, where Dr. Kevin Dorsey, dean and provost for SIU School of Medicine, welcomed the group and talked about the importance of philanthropy and community involvement. Guests learned how Young Philanthropists has invigorated young leaders by introducing them to the power of community philanthropy. Since it was founded in 2006, the group has awarded $41,000 to programs that support children and youth issues. Membership is $125 annually – 100% of which is directed to The Future Fund, a permanent endowment at the Community Foundation through which annual grants are made. Many thanks to SIU for hosting the Young Philanthropists Kick-Off Event and to US Bank for sponsoring the giving circle in 2014! ••• To learn more or join a giving circle, please visit the Community Foundation’s website at www.CFLL.org or call 217-789-4431.
