Our founding principles are still at work in all we do, especially in our vision statement: uniting the community through service. The articles in this issue of Hope in Action offer several different reflections on this anniversary, including a retrospective on our Meals on Wheels program, an overview of our 45 years, and an article about our summer interns, the latest generation of volunteers who have worked to make our programs possible. We’ll also celebrate our anniversary next month at Feed the Soul—our sixth annual event promises to be lots of fun, so I hope you’ll join us. You can find out more and purchase tickets at mifa.org/feedthesoul. Sincerely, Sally Jones Heinz Executive Director Hope in Action staff Ellen Whitten, Editor [email protected] (901) 529-4507 Santana Singleton, Designer James Seacat, Communications Director Our vision: Uniting the community through service. Our mission: Supporting the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs. The evolution of the Meals on Wheels program serves as an example of MIFA’s ability to perceive and respond to the needs of the community over the years. In 1976, when the Memphis social services community observed a growing need for a meal delivery program for homebound seniors, MIFA submitted a funding request to the Delta Area Agency on Aging. They proposed a cost-effective program that would utilize volunteers to deliver hot lunches to low-income seniors in a four-county area. MIFA won the grant and built its home-delivered meals program on the existing Project MEET congregate meal program, subcontracting with Lutheran Social Services and packaging the food prepared at congregate sites to be delivered to individual clients. Volunteers picked up meals for their routes at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, and MIFA Meals on Wheels was born. In 1981, MIFA took over operation of Project MEET as well, and Virginia Hiett became the first director of the integrated program. Since 1976, MIFA Meals on Wheels has adapted to meet the changing needs of our senior population. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2013 • 3 Until 1984, the Cook Convention Center facilities served as MIFA’s meals kitchen, and when that arrangement ended, MIFA found a space that suited all its needs—the former home of Robilio’s Restaurant and Grocery at 910 Vance Avenue. For the first time in its history, the Memphis Plough Community Foundation provided a loan that allowed MIFA to acquire the property, and MIFA settled into its current home. In addition to the daily provision of meals to seniors in the Memphis area, MIFA Meals on Wheels has also worked to provide this service under special circumstances. In July of 2003, the straight-line winds that came to be known as “Hurricane Elvis” left 300,000 homes without power, some for nearly two weeks. Meals were prepared before MIFA’s facilities lost power, and volunteers were able to check on their clients soon after the storm. MIFA remained without power for several days, and staff and volunteers worked in our 90-degree building to prepare 5,500 shelf-stable meals—canned and packaged foods that require no refrigeration—and deliver them to clients. The city eventually provided a generator to power the meals operation. In 2003, volunteers noticed that some clients were splitting their meals—the only food they might see in a day—with their pets. They appealed to Germantown Animal Welfare League, who began providing pet food for those residents with companion animals and continues to do so today. Today, MIFA Meals on Wheels delivers hot lunches to 1,200 Shelby County seniors each weekday. 4 • Fall 2013 • HOPE IN ACTION mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 For a program like MIFA Meals on Wheels, keeping up with the needs of the community also involves keeping up with technology. In addition to ongoing vehicle maintenance and the upkeep of a sizeable kitchen, a critical component of the program is its database and routing software. After several years of adding, subtracting, and changing routes, drivers found themselves crossing each other’s paths, until 2012, when Michael Mosbey from FedEx volunteered his time and expertise to reevaluate and optimize those routes, saving MIFA $15,000 in gas and overtime. As part of the strategic plan, earlier this year, MIFA Meals on Wheels service ended in Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale counties. On July 1, we transitioned meal delivery in the outer counties to Southwest Human Resource Agency, which specializes in rural meal delivery and can provide meals in a more cost-effective manner. In the fiscal year ending June 30, our program served 2,888 unduplicated clients a total of 404,508 meals. Now we can focus on increasing our Meals on Wheels impact in Shelby County, eventually serving hundreds more. For programs like ours, growth isn’t always about expanding. It’s about evaluating the needs of the moment, anticipating the needs of the future, and responding accordingly. After many strategic changes, we are prepared to expand our services to reach more people in need in our immediate area in an effort to support the independence of those seniors in Memphis and Shelby County. Between 70 and 100 volunteers each weekday make our meal deliveries possible. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • FAll 2013 • 5 Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, when social unrest was at its peak, area churches and community leaders intent on healing the city’s wounds realized they would have to come together to accomplish anything. In September of that year, MIFA was born. Celebrates 45 YEARS The constitution for the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association is unanimously passed, and MIFA is founded 1968 6 • Fall 2013 • HOPE IN ACTION Berkeley Poole is hired as MIFA’s first executive director At the time, advocacy work was not popular, and the community had little faith in the visionary ambitions of MIFA’s leaders. But by April 1969, the organization had raised $30,000 and hired Berkeley Poole as its first executive director. When Gid Smith and Bob Dempsey became co-executive directors in 1972, they did so with the understanding that MIFA did not have the funds to pay them, and the partnership they formed became arguably the most important turning point in MIFA’s history. Smith and Dempsey transformed MIFA into an organization focused on direct action rather than advocacy work. Programs were categorized as “delivery of service” or “systemic change.” In 1974, MIFA began consistently securing grants, beginning with its first VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) contract, and volunteers became an integral part of MIFA’s services. Under the thoughtful leadership of those volunteers, programs like MIFA Meals on Wheels Gid Smith becomes executive director MIFA shifts its focus from communication to action MIFA is awarded its first grant for transportation of seniors through Project MEET 1969 1972 1973 MIFA is awarded its first VISTA contract and becomes a model for the national VISTA program by recruiting volunteers locally Churches and Social Services Fund becomes a MIFA program. It later evolves into Churches and Synagogues Emergency Services and exists today as Emergency Services The Delta Area Agency on Aging awards MIFA a grant for its home-delivered meals program 1974 1975 1976 MIFA and MLGW establish the Plus-1 program 1982 (a MIFA program since 1976), the Mid-South Food Bank (a separate independent entity since 1981) and The Mid-South Senior newspaper (now The Best Times) were created. By the 1980s, MIFA was ready to expand its services to seniors and implement programs for teens and families in crisis. As an increasing number of nonprofits vied for government funding, MIFA bolstered its development efforts under the leadership of Allie Prescott to prepare for the downturn in grant dollars. An era of innovative fundraising efforts began, marked by such projects as Starry Nights, the Circle of Hope campaign, Empty Bowls, and The MIFA Thrift Store. In 1997, Margaret Craddock became executive director. She began at MIFA as a VISTA and lent her years of experience and visionary leadership to carry the organization into a period of new growth, during which programs were expanded and the headquarters at 910 Vance was renovated. Sally Heinz’s leadership, which began in 2011, has been marked by efforts to increase efficiencies and position MIFA for focused program growth. Through the strategic plan which is currently under way, program model changes have been implemented to serve more clients while reducing costs, and methods for measuring economic and qualitative client impact are also in place. The title of the strategic plan is “MIFA at 45: A Strong Foundation for a Greater Future” and serves as a reminder of just how solid this organization is. Moving forward, we will build on that strong foundation to advance our mission, sustain the organization, and adjust to community needs, positioning MIFA to serve at our highest capacity in the future. This summer was no exception, but the four interns we hosted all shared exceptional talent, energy, and commitment to their work for the benefit of our programs and clients. Each of these bright, dedicated students brought keen interest in doing something good for others to their summer of service at MIFA, and each was enriched by their experiences supporting the independence of our vulnerable senior neighbors. Through the national Bonner Scholars network, we welcomed Mitch Mackiw, a junior Politics major at Earlham College in Richmond, IN, whose background in volunteerism and interest in the business side of nonprofit agencies drew him to MIFA. Working primarily with the Hands on Homes program, which underwent both staffing and service model transitions during his six-week internship, Mitch helped manage the client intake and materials procurement processes, coordinated group ramp builds, and advanced MIFA’s Project CARE partnership with MLG&W. Mitch describes his summer at MIFA as transformational. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 Taylor Gardiner, a Rhodes College sophomore from Spartanburg, SC, who is also a Bonner Scholar, was introduced to MIFA last fall when he participated in a student-led community garden project. Returning as a summer intern, he applied his love for meeting people and making them smile as a valued member of the Meals on Wheels and Inter-Faith Relations teams. Greeting volunteers, delivering daily routes, and assisting with program administration taught Taylor the importance of customer service, client care, and accountability, while representing MIFA at public events helped reinforce our vision of uniting the community through service. Rhodes junior Mark Lainoff (left) and Bonner intern Mitch Mackiw (right) ably managed several Hands on Homes construction projects for MIFA, including a recent handicap ramp build for a senior neighbor in North Memphis. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 A Rhodes junior from the D.C. area who is majoring in International Studies and History, Mark Lainoff first came to MIFA last spring to assist with Hands on Homes, which until he started law school in July was staffed by his friend and fellow Rhodes alum Jack Clark. Recognizing the need for MIFA to have a campus-based representative to promote our many opportunities for service, he filled his role as Rhodes student liaison energetically and effectively while also providing oversight for the daily operation of HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2013 • 9 Rhodes Bonner scholar Taylor Gardiner and international intern Jessica Caie welcomed more than 80 Meals on Wheels volunteers each weekday during their summer internships at MIFA. Hands on Homes and administrative support for Meals on Wheels. Mark’s work for MIFA culminated in a recent two-site ramp build for Rhodes students, alumni, faculty, and staff that measurably improved the quality of life for our homebound clients. When Jessica Caie, a Masters candidate in International Relations and Politics from Aberdeen, Scotland, came to Memphis several years ago as an exchange student at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, little did she imagine she would be back here this summer as a MIFA intern. But when 10 • Fall 2013 • HOPE IN ACTION given the opportunity to return to the community she considers a second home, Jessica volunteered her services enthusiastically. Like Taylor, her work was concentrated in volunteer coordination and compliance for Meals, and she also provided valuable support services for our development staff. Jessica loved learning about agency and program operations from the inside out, and MIFA loved having such a capable, conscientious, and cheerful contributor to our team. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 SHARE THE PENNIES ON YOUR MLGW BILL Share the Pennies is a new program sponsored by MLGW and MIFA that encourages MLGW customers to round their utility bills up to the next dollar to support local seniors. A native of Spanish Fort, Alabama, Anne is an alumna of Rhodes College and was a co-founder of Dress for Success in Memphis. She says, “After 12 years in corporate marketing at Morgan Keegan, I wanted to shift my career to raising awareness and funds for an organization that was close to my heart. MIFA was at the top of my career wish list and I feel incredibly lucky to be here!” Anne and her husband John live in Midtown and have two children—Phillip, a sophomore in high school, and Frances, a sophomore in college.
