King-Bruwaert House Legacy and Leaders Fall 2015 King-Bruwaert House, 6101 S. County Line Road, Burr Ridge, IL 60527 Julie Ryan, Senior Director of Admissions & Community Development www.king-bruwaert.com / [email protected] / 630-230-9520 Legacy and Leaders is a newsletter produced by the Admissions & Community Development Department. The purpose of the publication is to recognize the volunteers, donors, and organizations that support King-Bruwaert House. The Best is Yet to Come... King-Bruwaert House and The Community House were privileged to bring legendary comedian Tom Dreesen to Hinsdale for a special performance of “An Evening of Laughter and Stories of Sinatra” on Monday, September 21st at The Community House. A packed house of 250 people were entertained by the opening act, The KB Adorables, who performed “New York, New York”. Ly Hotchkin, who proved she is no one’s “Second Banana,” introduced our headliner, Tom Dreesen, who took the stage for about 90 minutes and shared humorous jokes, stories of his upbringing in Harvey Illinois, and regaled the crowd with his 13 years of travels all over the county as the opening performer for Frank Sinatra. Tom Dreesen after his performance with Kate Vogts, Active Adult Director, and Jeni Fabian, Executive Director, both from The Community House with Julie Ryan, Senior Director of Admissions and Community Development, and Bonnie Kohout, Director of Marketing, both from King-Bruwaert House. K-B House Board Member, Michael Meagher, a close friend of Tom Dreesen’s, was instrumental in bringing “the hardest working man in show business” to our community. “It was my pleasure to ask Tom to perform and facilitate this program,” commented Mike Meagher. He added, “It was a win-win situation for The Community House and K-B House. We were able to offer the highest quality entertainment to the Hinsdale area while gaining exposure for both organizations.” Mike’s contact, coupled with the sponsorships of the Anderson/Jones Speaker Series from The Community House, All Trust Home Care, Beary Landscaping, Mavco Generations~Mavon Insurance Center, and The Northern Trust Company, provided additional support to keep the ticket costs free for K-B House residents and at a very low cost for the community. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the audience and judging by the success of the evening, the first of many to come. Most of the stories Tom told about Frank Sinatra resonated with the audience, especially his philosophy of taking care of “the little guy” by giving out $100 bills as tips. Sinatra always wore a tuxedo to perform out of respect for the audience, whether it was before the President of the United States or a guy who saved up his earnings all year to buy tickets. Finally, when Sinatra was older and getting toward the end of his career, he still believed “The Best is Yet to Come.” These were truly inspirational words for the audience and Godair Park residents, Neighbors, Paul & Moira Naffah, enjoy our residents. Minnie & Don Sandstedt. K-B House hospitality before the show. KB Adorables Rose Ann Hoof of the Woods of King-Bruwaert; Barbara Schafer, Director of the KB Adorables; and Marie Novotny of Godair Park. Dave & Julie Bossert of the Woods with their friends who happen to be on the Woods waiting list, Sheila & Cassius MacDiarmid. Peg & Mike Meagher. Mike has been a King-Bruwaert House Board Member since 2007. Page 2 Fall 2015 Message from the President At our Legacy and Leaders Dinner on May 13, 2015, the Board of Directors had the opportunity to recognize the 30-year career of retiring Executive Director, Carl Baker, while welcoming a new era with recently hired Chief Executive Officer, Terri Bowen. During the dinner, we recognized generous donors who contributed significantly during the last year and paid tribute to new members of our Legacy Society, a group that has committed to naming King-Bruwaert House in their estate plans. During our initial strategic planning meetings this year, we identified the many strengths identified with K-B House. We kept returning to the number one factor that we feel sets us apart from every other retirement community in the United States – namely, the people connected to K-B. When we survey residents or the greater community, they point to the people associated with K-B House that make such an important difference. Staff who provide the highest levels of care for our residents; the residents themselves who support K-B House through their participation in activities, their positive remarks in the community and their generosity to our mission; and our dedicated Board members who bring their professional experience and personal connections. While we acknowledge that people really make the difference, our Board realizes that we need to maintain and update our historic manor house and ensure that our independent living communities reflect the needs of the senior adults in our community. Our Board is working diligently to study and assess the ever changing and competitive marketplace, analyzing trends in senior housing, and conducting focus groups to see what our community wants for the future. We will make every effort to share what we have learned and communicate how we intend to respond in the coming years. Within this newsletter, you will note, sadly, that we experienced an unprecedented number of resident losses this year. This is certainly reflected in our community coming together, united in a grieving process that included many personalized memorial services. We would like to thank so many family members and friends for contributing generously to memorial donations. You will also read about members of our K-B community who have pledged their support in the form of Endowed Scholarships to assist in the education of our dedicated and caring staff. Finally, you will see photos from several events we hosted during the last year that showcase our residents and their vibrant and engaged lives. As a life-long Hinsdale resident and a proud 20-year Board member, I consider myself fortunate to be part of the K-B lineage. Having a parent who lived in the Woods of King-Bruwaert, I have been able to witness the unique care and compassion that has long been part of the K-B tradition. I wholeheartedly agree with Chicago Tribune columnist Barbara Brotman and her assessment of King-Bruwaert House - we are a retirement community “Shangri-la” and we intend to remain that way. Barbara was invited to speak at K-B after writing about the common, yet complex process of moving an aging parent from another state to a senior living community. The column, published in April, resonated with many K-B and local families who had made the difficult decision to move a loved one away from their home. Barbara spoke firsthand about her own experience of transitioning her mother from New York to Chicago. After years of scheduling urgent flights to the Big Apple to deal with medical emergencies and doctor appointments, Barbara found herself questioning the safety of leaving a 90-something parent on her own. The decision to move her mother eventually worked out well, although Barbara noted that New York will forever be home to her. While visiting K-B, Barbara met with several out-of-state residents who spoke of their decision to move to K-B in order to be closer to family members. Elizabeth Larson, William Voss and Marianne Andre shared heart-felt stories about the challenges associated with leaving their homes, packing up belongings and starting new lives in a new location. After hearing their experiences, Barbara wrote another column June 9, reflecting on their perspectives. “Our parents know the other half (of the story),” Brotman wrote. “What is it like to move to a new city where you know no one but your child? To leave a home where you have lived for decades?” Brotman went on to describe K-B as a “senior citizen Shangri-La.” “King-Bruwaert is a historic Georgian manor home on 35 wooded acres crisscrossed with walking paths,” she wrote. “Residents sing the praises of new friends, a caring staff and a constant thrum of activity.” King-Bruwaert House Receives Three Endowed Scholarships During the last year, two Woods residents have decided to create three different Endowed Scholarships in order to ensure that their funds continue in perpetuity to benefit the staff of King-Bruwaert House. George Rinder, Woods Resident since 1995, wanted to honor the memory of his wife, Shirley, who passed away earlier in 2015. The Rinders often remarked that the 20 years they lived at K-B House were a very happy part of their 67 years together. To acknowledge the nursing care that Shirley received during her stays in the House, George decided to create the Shirley Latham Rinder Memorial Scholarship. This Endowed Scholarship will benefit both nurses and other staff at K-B House. Memorial donations were earmarked for the Scholarship and George plans to fund the remainder with a donation from his estate. Martin and Pat Jahn, new residents in the Woods, also recognized the outstanding nursing care and services that staff at K-B provides. Their first endowed scholarship is earmarked for nursing. Their second scholarship has been established for the maintenance department. The Jahns felt that they wanted to recognize the hard work of the maintenance department and encourage the members of the team. This scholarship will enable them to obtain further training or specialization in technical aspects of buildings and grounds as well as affording them the opportunity to enroll in classes for an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. King-Bruwaert House greatly appreciates the support from our residents which truly sets us apart from other retirement communities. We can continue to recognize and retain our staff because of the generosity of friends and families of King-Bruwaert House. George & Shirley Rinder celebrate Shirley’s birthday in 2013 with a party in our Founders Room. George has committed to creating an Endowed Scholarship in memory of Shirley Latham Rinder. Martin & Pat Jahn contribute to two Endowed Scholarships, one in Nursing and one in Maintenance. Page 4 Fall 2015 Reinvesting in Our Grounds King-Bruwaert House is known for our beautiful grounds, stately trees, serene ponds, and walking paths whether it is on our 35-acre main campus or 20-acre Godair Park. Beginning this year, we began a multi-year project to reinvest in our grounds. This 4-5 year plan will allow us to be fiscally responsible and environmentally conscious while removing dead, diseased, and invasive plants and trees; surveying our healthy trees; and developing a plan to retain our historic ecosystem. We began with a revitalization of the pond at Godair Park. Initially, the pond was cleared of invasive and non-native plants before new plants were added to the shoreline. The original size of the pond was retained, but because of the planting materials, it gives an impression of being larger. Stones were added to the shoreline and the walking path was refinished. Finally, some carp and goose protection was installed. The residents at Godair Park are very pleased with the results of the pond and look forward to seeing the changes during the different seasons. On the main campus, the Reforestation Project is currently underway, with many trees identified as damaged and needing removal. Most of the trees that need to be cut down are Ash. Some are dead and pose a safety concern due to their location near the cottages or a walking path. While trees are being removed, other invasive plants will be eradicated as well. We will keep a natural look, but give naturally growing plants the opportunity to grow. An arborist will complete a tree survey to review the kinds of trees, locations, age, and life expectancy. After the survey is complete in January 2016, we will develop a plan for selecting trees and will begin planting in Spring 2016. “The Board of Directors, residents, and staff share in the stewardship of our land and realize the responsibility of caring for our natural environment belongs to us all.” said Natalie Zelman, Horticultural Therapist and Manager of Life Enrichment. “We know that the work we do now on our grounds will be here for generations to come. Future residents will look back on us and say ‘job well done’.” Senator Roskam Visits K-B House By: Bonnie Kohout King-Bruwaert CEO Terri Bowen presents Congressman Peter Roskam (R-6th District) with the Leading Age Partners in Quality award during a recent visit to K-B. The award recognizes Congressman Roskam for his commitment and dedication to advancing senior adult services and initiatives. Fall 2015 Page 5 Legacy Society Dinner The 8th Annual Legacy Society Dinner, held on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, offered the KingBruwaert House community the picture-perfect setting to honor the 30-year career of retiring Executive Director, Carl F. Baker. In addition, we were able to thank generous annual donors, induct a record 11 new members into the Legacy Society recognizing their intention to name K-B House in their estate plans, acknowledged special vendor contributors, and highlighted our first 2 Endowed Scholarships. The evening began with a welcome from Chief Executive Officer, Terri Bowen, who reflected on her past year at K-B House during her remarks. “King-Bruwaert House is a very distinctive place both in terms of this beautiful building and grounds and the people who live and work here. From the time I started here about a year ago, I feel like I have been welcomed into this special community. It is truly like a family.” After a meal that featured Carl Baker’s favorite dishes, such as, salad with blue cheese dressing, filet mignon, and banana cream pie, Senior Director of Admissions & Community Development, Julie Ryan, introduced a tribute video that was created with Director of Marketing, Bonnie Kohout. Julie reported that, “Bonnie and I didn’t give anyone who spoke a script or notes; we just had them speak from the heart. There were many tears because of their kind words and sentiments. You’ll find yourself nodding and agreeing with what they say.” John Kayser, President of the Board of Directors, presented Carl with a watch and recalled humorous stories from past Board Meetings. He continued by talking seriously about the hallmark of Carl’s 30 years as Executive Director of K-B House and his legacy. “Carl had many accomplishments while Executive Director of K-B House including modernizing the historic building; adding the Healthcare wing, Suzanne’s Place, and the clinic; and constructing the Woods of King-Bruwaert. His greatest achievement is his ability to hire the best staff and retain them. K-B House is what it is today because of the people and Carl Baker is responsible for that.” Carl Baker (center), retiring Executive Director of K-B House, is flanked by Bill Whitney, who was a member of the Board when Carl was recruited 30 years ago and Jim Parsons, who has been on the Board since 2007. Martin Gross, Board Secretary, and Bob Vogele, resident of Godair Park look forward to the 8th Annual Legacy & Leaders Dinner. Following John’s presentation, Carl remarked about how rewarding his 30 years at K-B House were. He spoke about receiving thank you letters from residents and their families as being one of the most rewarding parts of his job because those were the direct result of the staff’s care and concern for the residents. He went on to say, “I believe one of the most important assets K-B has is the tenured and caring staff who come in each day with kindness and a smile to perform their jobs.” The final part of the Program included a special recognition of the 11 new Legacy Society Donors; special vendor donors; and the addition of K-B House’s first two Endowed Scholarships. We are unique in our generous donors and are very grateful for all their support. In his closing speech, Jim Parsons, Chair of the Development Committee, said, “During this Dinner, I have the opportunity to visit with dear friends and neighbors that I haven’t seen in years. I’m happy to know that K-B House cares for the senior adults in our community.” Woods residents, Don & Jane Gralen added K-B House to their estate plans this year. We recognize the generosity of Ruth Van Gelder, K-B House resident, who has decided to add K-B House to her will. Marge Kayser, Mary Klingenberger, Board Member, and John Kayser, Board President, enjoy cocktail hour before the Legacy & Leaders Dinner. CEO, Terri Bowen enjoys conversation with Jerrie Callantine, Woods Resident, after the dinner to celebrate the Callantine's decision to join the Legacy Society. Page 6 Fall 2015 Financial Breakfast Presentation John B. Leo, Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer for The Northern Trust Company was the featured speaker for our Financial Breakfast Presentation on Tuesday, November 25, 2014. His topic was, “Global Investment Strategy: Time for the Economy to Carry the Ball”. Before his insightful talk, Woods Resident, Bob Dederick, former Chief Investment Officer at Northern Trust, entertained the audience with stories of his experiences at Northern before introducing John. John concluded his presentation by summarizing these nine important bullet points. John Leo, Bob Dederick, and John Grube pose after the Breakfast Presentation. • Global growth remains fragile • Inflation a non-issue: Central Banks more concerned with deflation • Central Banks remain in various stages of accommodation: implementation and exit • Gravitational force to keep global interest rates low for longer • Global liquidity continues to provide tailwind to risk assets • Corporate earnings will drive equity returns going forward: US earnings strong, EU earnings spring-loaded for economic recovery, and Emerging Markets exposure to global growth a positive • Expect a reversion to the mean in terms of equity market returns • It’s all about setting expectations: well forecast interest rate increases are relatively easily digested • Expect more volatility: uncertain macro and geopolitical risk will inject more volatility into a relatively complacent global capital markets K-B House has enjoyed a great partnership with Northern Trust over the years. Many of our residents have their investments managed at Northern Trust. We have benefited from the experience of Board Members who worked at Northern Trust who advised us in our Endowment, budget, and other fiscal matters. Former Board Member from 1996-2004, Dave Fox, held the positions of Chairman and CEO. Current Board Treasurer, John Grube, was an Executive Vice President. Flag Ceremony Dusty & Carol Hanson helped recognize all of our Veterans during a flag raising ceremony on July 31, 2015 to celebrate our new flag pole and flag. By: Bonnie Kohout Members of American Legion Post 43 and the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3875 of Naperville officiated at a ceremony July 31 dedicating a new flag and flag pole on the grounds of King-Bruwaert House, 6101 S. County Line Road, Burr Ridge. More than 60 residents and staff members participated in the dedication that included the pledge of allegiance, patriotic readings, the singing of the national anthem and a memorable playing of taps. Post members also offered individual recognitions of all those residents and staff who served in the military. Leila Ronning waves her flag to show patriotism and pride. Fall 2015 Page 7 Memorial Donations King-Bruwaert House’s memorial program is a special way to honor those who are no longer living with us, recognize the exceptional care they received, and validate the impact this person had in their lives. Whether the resident lived at K-B House for a short time, or spent many years here in various levels of care, the Board of Directors and staff feel each loss very deeply. The staff creates a deep bond with both the resident and family so when the resident is no longer with us, the family who no longer visits is a loss as well. In order to give Board, residents, and staff more opportunities to honor the deceased and help grieve, the Department of Social Work has instituted a Community Memorial Service that we host for families who may have lost a loved one in the last year. This gives the whole community the opportunity to grieve for residents who have passed. Often family members choose to have a personal memorial service at K-B House which is officiated by our Chaplain, Rev. RitaKay Lochner. For residents who pass between now and the end of the calendar year, another Community Memorial Service is scheduled for January 13, 2016. “That's why we come together - to give and receive sympathy and offer God's blessing to those who are mourning," said Rev. RitaKay. Over the last year, many family and friends have generously contributed to memorials. They are listed here.
