On September 8, I preached a sermon that I called, A Church for
the 21st Century. In my message, I made six statements that
describe the kind of church that I think is relevant in today’s
world. What I hoped you would hear is that this is the kind of
church I think God wants Main Street UMC to be, a church that:
 Believes that Jesus is the way
 Believes in the power of grace
 Believes in miracles
 Is clear about its purpose
 Has an ancient-future faith
 Passes on its faith to the next generations

As I prepared that sermon, I realized that there are many more
things I could (or should) have said about the church in the 21st
century. If I had it to do all over again, I would have emphasized
that when planning ministry, a church for the 21st century thinks
about people in the church family and the people who are not yet
part of the church family. This is vitally important. It means that
we must pay closer attention to the world around us and to the
people God wants us to serve. It means that we must make an
investment in programs and ministry that help us fulfill our
mission to help future generations become faithful followers of
Jesus Christ. It means that we must make an investment—both
time and money—in programs and ministry that will help people
who are outside of the church have a life-changing encounter
with Jesus Christ.
I’m telling you this now, because in the coming weeks and
months, you will be hearing about plans for 2014 and our
operating budget. I’m going to ask you to make a tangible,
financial commitment to God’s work through Main Street’s
ministry. You’ll also be hearing about opportunities to serve God
in a variety of ministry programs, and I’m going to be asking you
My hope is that you will come to see that your gifts of time and money
are both a response to God’s love and grace—a recognition that God
has given you all that you have and made you all that you are—and a
way of participating in everything that God is doing to transform lives
through Main Street Church. If you will make this investment, I believe
you will see a return that is beyond your ability to imagine.
Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish
abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in
the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.

6th Grade through 12th Grade Seniors – We invite you to
come and participate with Main Street Youth!
On Sept 22nd, the Youth, those who have their Driver’s
License or are receiving their Learner’s Permit soon, took a
Rite of Passage with Prayer covenant. Everyone should feel
safe on the road with our new drivers from Main Street!
Thank you to our Youth Volunteer Steven Brown who taught
everyone how to change a tire and many aspects about car
maintenance!
Matthew Curry and Tommy Merritt are two youth from our
church going on a mission trip to Guatemala in November.
Tommy’s mother Lisa, who teaches Main Street’s preschool
Sunday School class and supports youth activities, and sister
Reba are going as well. The trip costs $1200 per person,
and we are collecting donations to support their trip. If you
would like to contribute, please mark your check in the memo
line for Guatemala mission trip.
Thank you to the youth and families for hosting the Spaghetti
Dinner on Sept. 29th to support the Guatemala mission trip.
On October 5th, the youth will meet at 6:30 pm in the church
parking lot and go to Twizted Creationz in Crimora. What
began as a fun Halloween party for kids has turned into an
annual tradition of scaring away cancer at Twizted Creationz
Haunted Forest. All received donations are given to Creative
Works Farm Camp LIGHT (Love-Inspire-Give Hope-Teach).
Come out for a night of fun and clean scares! Even if you’re
not interested in going through the forest, come join us as
there are activities outside of the forest. Donations of $10 per
person will be needed to enter the forest. Scholar hips are
available, please see Tracy if interested.
Youth Night on October 6th will be themed Apples Galore
and So Much More!
On October 13th, the youth will meet at 4:30 pm for youth
night. Jim and Judy McKinney will be our hosts and take us
GeoCaching!

October 20th, please meet in the church parking lot at 2:30
pm. We will be going to the Concert Choir show at
Waynesboro High School.
Youth Night on October 27thwill be themed “Shine Your Light”
Give Away with Pumpkin Carving.
Angels Among Us will be the Christmas Mission Project for
Main Street UMC again this year. The angels will be
available on October 27th. There are three ways you may
choose to participate: 1) Take an angel and shop yourself, 2)
Take an angel and return it with the monetary amount on the
back of the tag and the youth will shop for you, or 3)
contribute any dollar amount to the Angel Project and as the
money collected grows, the youth will pull tags and shop. All
gifts will be dedicated on December 8th and taken to the
Salvation Army on December 8th following the 11:00 am
worship service.

October 6—Children will sing at the 11:00 am Worship Service. Please
plan to meet in the Music Room at 10:45 am to practice and get robes on.
October 6 at the 8:30 am Worship Time only—We will begin our First
Older Elementary Children's Church which will include 2nd-5th
Grade. We will begin a lesson series called "Angry Words" which is used
in conjunction with the game Angry Birds. We hope that your tween will
join us at 8:30 am for this special Children's Church that is beginning.
We are still in need of volunteers for this Older Elementary Children's
Church. If you are interested in hearing more or want to come check it

October 12 at 10:00 am Family Pumpkin Picking—We will meet at the
church parking lot at 10:00 am and drive to a local pumpkin patch to pick
pumpkins together. Everyone is welcome!!
October 23, 6:00-8:00 pm Old Timey Harvest Party at the home of Mandy
Williams. Our Wonderful Wednesday Special Event for this month will
be an Old Timey Harvest Party for the children at the home of Mandy
Williams. We will meet in the Bunny Room at 6:00 pm and drive the
Church van to the home of Mandy Williams. Parents will pick up
children at Mandy's house. Please contact Mandy for more information.
October 31: Downtown Trick or Treat and Block Party to follow. We will
be participating with other local organizations in the Waynesboro
Downtown Trick or Treat. We will be having a block party in the church
parking lot following the Trick or Treat that will include music, dancing,
games, and food. If you are interested in dressing up and setting up a
game, helping with music and dancing, helping with greeting and crowd
control or just being a smiling face to welcome trick or treaters, please
contact Mandy Williams.
December 7 Waynesboro Christmas Parade We are preparing for the
Waynesboro Christmas Parade. The theme is Christmas in Toyland. We
hope this will be a churchwide activity, and all are welcome to help and
be in the parade. The more the merrier!
October 9th we will have a Parade Planning meeting at 6:15 pm in the
Conference Room. If you are interested, please plan to join us for that
meeting or contact Mandy Williams at [email protected]

The Main Street Food Pantry operates from
Monday through Thursday, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., to assist people in
our community in need of food. Financial or food donations are
accepted. Contact Doug Edwards (942-3787) or Joe Duncan

Prayer Shawl Ministry
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting on Sunday, October
13, in the library after the 11:00 am worship service. Bring yarn
and knitting needles or crochet hook and join us for this
meaningful ministry. No experience needed! Contact Sharon
O’Dell at 943-9750 for more information.
Current Sermon Series
During the month of October, Pastor Neil Hough is preaching a
sermon series called: Tell Me a Story. As we read the Gospel
accounts of Jesus’ ministry, we discover that he told a lot of
stories. These stories are called parables. Through the parables,
Jesus taught about God, the Kingdom of God, God’s grace, and
faithful living. In this series, we’re looking at some of the parables
that speak to our lives, considering how we should interpret them
and what they mean for us as followers of Jesus. (Don’t forget
that audio files of past sermons are available on the church’s
website.)
Coming in November – Three Simple Rules
During the month of November at Main Street, we will have a
sermon series and church-wide study called Three Simple
Rules. From the beginning of the Methodist movement, John
Wesley established General Rules for the members of the
Methodist Society. These rules are still part of United Methodist
doctrine and apply to 21st century life. Using a book by Bishop
Reuben Job (entitled Three Simple Rules), we’ll look at the rules
and consider what they mean for us today. Look for more
information in eSpires, bulletins, and the November Lighted
Spire.
The weather is cooler, and the leaves are changing into their
beautiful new coats!
Our school is in full swing, and the children are learning so much!
Every other Tuesday, Senor Diego gives them a Spanish lesson
that is so much fun! On Wednesday, we have music together
and learn some wonderful new songs. Beginning in October,
Ann Walker will be coming to read to our classes once a month.
In our spare time, we’re learning how to walk in a line, take turns,
share, use an inside voice, and our academic lessons too!
I have been so impressed with the love and generosity of this
church! Not a day goes by that someone doesn’t stop by to
check on our progress or offer their help in some way. Just a few
weeks ago, I asked the congregation to help us purchase two
white boards for our 4-year-old classrooms. Lo and behold, my
prayers were answered in the form of some generous donors. I
cried when I saw the checks. I cannot thank you enough for your
kindness toward our school. Your gifts will be a blessing to the
children of our school for many years to come!
Our Open House for church members is coming soon! You
are cordially invited to attend Wednesday, October 23 from
5:30—6:30 pm. You will get your chance to visit our classrooms,
talk to our teachers, view some of the children’s progress, and
get an idea what our days are like. It is our way of welcoming
you as a congregation to our school and thanking you for your
continued support. We can’t wait to see you there! May God

Project Research and Design Task Force Report
If you’ve been seeing folks walking around with clipboards,
tape measures and samples, I’m sure you’ve wondered
what they’re up to. What you’ve been seeing are members
of the Project Research and Design Task Force getting
specification and cost estimates for numerous maintenance
and enhancement projects that you made comment on last
spring through a church-wide survey.
The Task Force has many dreams for making our facility
welcoming and comfortable for new folks seeking to hear
Jesus’ Word and for the older ones who have trouble
hearing and viewing activities and programs in the
sanctuary and fellowship hall. You’ve probably noticed a
real uptick in the children and youth ministries. The Task
Force recognizes the need to meet the technology needs to
which they’ve grown accustomed in school and at home.
Maybe you’ve noticed the wrinkled carpet in the sanctuary.
Maybe you’ve observed the peeling paint on the sanctuary
ceiling or the finish on the pew in front of you. These items
were fresh and new at one time, but like many things, have
a shelf life and are ready for update.
The Task Force wants to enhance the grounds of Main
Street too. A path is being planned to run between the
General Wayne and church parking lots for upper lot
parkers.
You may also hear about changes to the
playground that will change its design and be made
appropriate for a wider age range of children.
Plans continue to develop and take shape. No final
decisions have been made. And, your support will be
important to ensure the completion of whatever Church
Council approves. If you have questions about the
