Discipleship 201: Problems and Pitfalls in Prayer
Greetings From Fr. Dave ~ [email protected]
Discipleship 201: Problems and Pitfalls in Prayer:
The Distinction Between Liturgical and Personal Prayer
We began our Prayer 201 Series two weeks ago
talking about going deeper in our prayer, beyond
the simple recitation of various prayers. Christian
prayer is at its core a humble, vital, intimate encounter with God; it is a relationship to nurture, not
a technique to master. This week I want to address
a clarification that helps avoid a lot of confusion
and frustration: the distinction between our private-personal prayer, and our more public or liturgical prayer.
the salvation of all.
A clarification will help at this point. Personal
prayer can be done joined together with many people, such as praying the rosary or doing a devotion
with a large or small group. It is still personal
prayer. And, liturgical prayer could be the celebration of Mass with only a handful of people present—and it is still liturgical prayer. And, when we
confuse the distinction between these two kinds of
praying we risk doing each poorly. For example,
the person who feels frustrated because the liturgical ritual and interaction of a congregation at Mass
are felt as a hindrance and distraction to the private
devotional prayers he or she would like to be saying, is confusing the two forms of prayer and consequently doing both badly. A mature Catholic spirituality will embrace both ways of praying.
Personal prayer, or devotional prayer is the one we
tend to “get” more easily. It is about our offering
ourselves to God, in thanksgiving, surrender, or
intercession. It can include the recitation of various
prayers, novenas, rosary, chaplet, lectio divina, centering prayer and the many forms of meditation
and contemplation. This kind of prayer facilitates
each of us as individuals in connecting with God—
and nurturing that relationship.
This week funeral services were held for Jean Barry
and for Bob Waine. May their souls rest in peace,
Liturgical prayer is different. It is the prayer of and may their families find comfort.
Christ praying through the Church for the world.
The Church does not exist for its own sake, but as
an instrument of salvation for the world. So, when
we pray the Mass we are entering into the prayer

and sacrifice of Jesus with the intention of bringing December 24th: 3:00pm, 5:00pm, 9:00pm
that salvation to the entire world. Other forms of
December 25th: 9:00am
liturgical prayer include the rituals surrounding the
celebration of any of the sacraments and the Liturgy of the Hours. This kind of prayer is ultimately
not so much about our personal intimacy with Jesus, as about our praying as the Body of Christ for

STEPHEN MINISTRY
People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?”
One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People. Stephen Ministers are there:

- HOLY HOUR *** Scheduling change! ***
Youth ministry this year has a special emphasis on adoring the Blessed
Sacrament. This is one of our most ancient prayers—being in the presence of the Body of Christ, speaking to Him and allowing Him to speak
to us.
Our youth group is hosting a special hour of adoration THIS Sunday,
12/14, from 7:15-8:00pm in the church. (This is changed from the 21st,
due to a scheduling conflict.) All are invited to join us as we dedicated
this extra hour to the Son of God who came to us at Christmas—and returns again and again in the Sacrament.
Make this part of your final preparations for the birth of the Lord!

ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Director of Faith Formation
Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) did not have an easy
life. He learned that life goes by quickly and requires hard
work. But he believed that we should be able to pray anytime
and anywhere, even in the midst of a busy day. He created a
prayer called the Examen, which prompts us to reflect on the
day, find God in our ordinary events, notice what is missing
or needs improvement, and look forward to spiritual growth
and God’s blessings. Try this version of St. Ignatius's prayer.
1. Become aware of the presence of God.
2. Review the day with gratitude. Gratitude is the foundation
of our relationship with God. Walk through your day in
the presence of God and note its joys and delights.
3. Pay attention to your emotions. Reflect on the feelings you
experienced during the day. Ask what God is saying
through these feelings.
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the
Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day
that God thinks is particularly important. It may be a vivid
moment or something that seems insignificant.
5. Look toward tomorrow. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow's challenges.
St. Ignatius encouraged people to talk to Jesus like a friend.
End the Daily Examen with a conversation with Jesus. Ask
forgiveness for your sins. Ask for his protection and help. Ask
for his wisdom about the questions you have and the problems you face. Do all this in the spirit of gratitude.

The third Sunday of Advent is known as the Sunday of Joy,
or Gaudete Sunday. (You will notice that the priest will
wear pink vestments to symbolize that the waiting is half
way over). Today’s reading, from John’s Gospel, again tells
us about John the Baptist, who tried to help people prepare
for the coming of the Messiah.
John reminds us that Jesus was sent to change our lives.
How can we as a family change our lives so that we can be
renewed with the presence of the Spirit? One of the problems that we all have, especially during this holiday season, is that we get so busy that we hardly think about what
we are actually celebrating. Brainstorm some things you
can do as a family that will help you keep more focused on
Jesus this Advent season . . . things you can do both by
yourself and some you can do with your family. This week
is filled with celebrations -- take time to learn about some
of the saints that are celebrated during this week, such as:
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Lucy, and Saint John of the
Cross.
