CLAIRBOURN M A G A Z I N E CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 73 FALL 2012 FROM THE HEADMASTER Clairbourn: Student Progress Abounds Watching students develop their talents and abilities is one of the most exciting parts of leading a school, and there was plenty of student growth on display from this past 2011-2012 school year. As an avid runner, I loved seeing students’ enthusiasm for the The Five Mile Club fitness challenge and how some of them even participated in the Pasadena Marathon (see the “Team Clairbourn” article in this issue). It was also wonderful to see the fourth and fifth-graders experience personal breakthroughs in their ability to communicate ideas, project their voices, and command audience attention in the Poetry Alive program. Robert W. Nafie, Ph.D. Headmaster It is even more special, at years’ end, to hear the eighth grade rememberance speeches because the full picture of how each student has grown over the years comes into crystal-clear focus. In this magazine issue, we’ve published excerpts from four speeches (see the Graduation News section) where students share their appreciation for lessons learned in the classroom, on the sports field, and in Chapel, appreciation for the Code of Ethics, and appreciation for the teacher and parent support that helped them grow along the way. In addition to the above content, this magazine contains the school’s Annual Report, the Spotlight on Success section with campus highlights and end-of-theyear awards, and plenty of success stories in the Alumni News section—including the Class of 2008’s college choices. For many of you, reading our magazine in a digital format online will be a new experience, and we’re hoping this change will be a positive one for our Clairbourn family. This move is designed to help the school “go green” by printing and mailing fewer magazines and also to meet the needs of those with tablets and other e-reader devices. But, if you miss the print format, it’s easy to change back. Just email or call the alumni office with your request at [email protected] and we’ll make sure you’ll get the print version again. Looking into the 2012-2013 school year, we’re already off to a great start, and I can’t help but think of all the upcoming stories we’ll be able to share of individual growth and accomplishment that are developing across the campus today. We’re so proud of each and every student. Robert W. Nafie, Ph.D. The purpose of Clairbourn School shall be to demonstrate in a practical way the unlimited nature of all true instruction through educational opportunities which are harmonious with the teachings of Christian Science and in accordance with accepted professional standards of educational excellence. CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 1 2 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • Fall 2012 Poetry Alive Teaching Communication Skills and Confidence Many parents hope their child will become an effective communicator—perhaps someday speaking at a graduation ceremony, corporate meeting, or providing expert advice in the media. With public speaking being one of humanity’s greatest fears, even surpassing the fear of death, it would seem unlikely for most students to overcome their self-consciousness and learn to speak and present professionally. But that is exactly what is happening with fourth and fifth grade students who participate in the Poetry Alive program which is brought to the Clairbourn campus every other year. The main objective is for the students to memorize a poem and act it out in front of an audience. But that simple objective can’t even begin to hint at the transformation which takes place in the student’s presentation skills and levels of courage by the end of the week-long program. Through personal coaching, confidence-building activities, and theatre exercises, students were actually learning to hold an audience in rapt attention as they skillfully projected, gestured, and modulated their tone appropriately with each word and idea in the poem. Poetry Alive program leader Valerie Chamness with student volunteers, Alison Wong, Alyssa Cole, and Caroline Dragos, performing the poem “The Aliens Have Landed” in front of the student assembly. Opposite: Sixth-grader Jacob Valenzuela performing poetry before a live audience. To prepare for the program, teachers assigned students into groups and let them choose a kid-friendly poem from the works of Shel Silverstein, Jeff Moss, or Jack Prelutsky. When the professional actors from Poetry Alive, Josh Daniels and Valerie Chamness, arrived on campus to lead the Poetry Alive program, everyone was ready to get straight to work. Josh and Val, appropriately wearing T-shirts that said “Metaphors Be With You,” got the students fired up with an introductory assembly filled with lively examples of all that poetry can be when expertly presented. Performing Valerie Chamness and Josh Daniels, from Poetry Alive, open the main assembly for students by acting out the poem “The Walrus and the Carpenter.” CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • Fall 2012 3 POETRY ALIVE Ava Marchetti, Mei-Tung Chen, Catherine Chan, Luca Yeghnazar, William Lee, and Brian O’Neil were chosen from the student body to help act out the poem “The Helpful Centipede.” with complete abandon and booming voices, they launched into “The Walrus and the Carpenter,” by Lewis Carroll, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” by Maya Angelou, and “The Helpful Centipede,” by Allan Wolf, which involved student volunteers coming forward from the audience to make a human centipede. Then, they switched gears to poems about feelings like “I Feel Silly,” by Jamie Lee Curtis, and “Angry,” by Sarah Hallbrook. Crowdpleasing favorites followed such as “5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” which, of course, required more enthusiastic volunteers to act out the part of jumping monkeys. Towards the end of the show, Josh and Val 4 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 Fourth-graders Ben Fogel and Logan Palmer work with the program leader Josh Daniels to break down the elements of their poem. brought down the house with the poem “The Aliens Have Landed!” by Kenn Nesbitt, which the students loved for its punchline that all teachers are really aliens. After the assembly, the Poetry Alive team visited classrooms to impart lesson one—understanding the parts of the poem. They advised, “Treat the poem like a script. The first thing you do is read it. Do your cold reading out loud. You have to memorize your lines. Memorization goes infinitely faster if you do it out loud. Do it ten times—no less than that. Do it 20 times if you need to. You can’t do your performance points if you have your script in your hands.” Then, each group was shown how to break down their poem to identify the characters, such as people, animals, and even objects. Next they analyzed the poem’s setting and identified all the actions described. Finally, they were asked to list the feelings and emotions of the different characters. Josh and Val explained, “No one can tell you the meaning of a poem. When we see the poem come to life in a play, all these feelings and little details come out. The skill we’re teaching you here is personalization—taking a piece of literature and having it mean something to yourself.” This founda- POETRY ALIVE tional exercise made all the difference in helping students acquire an overall understanding of the poem’s ideas and nuances that they would later have to communicate to an audience. Lesson two was all about performing— learning the elements of a great performance and learning to manage the challenges it can bring. Josh and Val explained “Being on stage is something you will encounter forever, but no one ever teaches us how to do it! Poetry can help you with your public speaking, and today you’ll get some skills you’ll use for the rest of your lives. So, what do you do about nerves when standing in front of people? Nervousness is energy, and you NEED energy when you’re on stage. Nervousness can be helpful to us if we learn how to use it properly. Now, stage fright is something completely different and it isn’t helpful. Stage fright is caused by fear and causes us to lock up and forget things. Most of us are only dealing with nervousness, and you can turn that energy into something useful on stage. The best tool for doing this is confidence—self-belief that you can do it.” The lesson continued with the four key elements of a great performance. First was the “Confidence Stance” which means planting one’s feet firmly on the floor, shoulder width apart, hips in a straight line, and hands at the sides. Next, was learning to “Face the Audience” which means facing fellow actors at a diagonal so the performer never turns completely away from the audience. It doesn’t feel realistic, Students analyzed, scripted, and cold read their group’s poem. but it keeps everyone involved in the action. The third element was to use one’s body to “Fill the Space.” Stage presence isn’t about the physical size of the actor. It is about the confidence and energy presented. The goal is to make every gesture big, bold, and fully extend the limbs! When pointing to the side, one should imagine pointing out through the wall into the neighboring classroom. The last element was to “Project the Voice” without screaming. Loud voices are achieved by breathing in extra air, and it’s easier to breathe in extra air when assuming the confidence stance on stage. CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 5 POETRY ALIVE Holden Fraser, Julian Arvo, Jack Bartlett, and Owen Timoner give it everything they’ve got to act out a poem called “The Funnel.” Following these performance lessons, students were ready for rehearsals. They first had to rewrite the poem in script form and then cast the parts and block the scenes. Through painstaking practice, they learned to break out of the common habit of presenting poetry with a sing-song delivery. Over and over again they worked on projecting their voices and did jumping jacks and other theater exercises to ensure they were warmed-up for the stage. Josh and Val left each group with these final words of advice, “When performing, it doesn’t matter if you mess up, fall down, forget everything, or if your costume falls off. The audience doesn’t know the script, they don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing. Mistakes happen, so learn to 6 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 hide them. Make it part of the show and keep your confidence.” At week’s end, mentally and physically the students were prepared for Friday’s big performance for parents and students in the Multipurpose building, and the event proved to be enormously entertaining and inspiring to all who attended. When asked about Poetry Alive, fourth grade teacher Mary-Kaye Halferty shared her enthusiasm for the program’s benefits—specifically how it helped her students work as a team, mentally let go of shyness, become better listeners, and even learn comedic delivery skills. Similarly, fifth grade teacher Jonathan Barner shared that, “Poetry Alive is such a wonderful compliment and contrast to other kinds of learning and seat work. As a teacher, it is wonderful to see students, who are not always strong in typical academic activities like math or writing, really come alive and shine in performing. Some students get the chance to demonstrate their leadership abilities and guide the group to a good conclusion. I also think that the more an individual gets up in front of groups to share, the more comfortable the process becomes. Practice does make perfect, or at least easier. It is also a good compliment to their more formal activity of leading Chapel once or twice each year.” POETRY ALIVE New PRICE FAMILY Literary Fund This Poetry Alive program was brought to campus last year thanks to a generous donation during the Annual Book Fair from the Bill and Beth Price family. Their love and support for Clairbourn’s Library and its activities over the years is legendary. As a parting gift to the school, now that their two daughters Erin and Katie have graduated, they established a new Price Family Literary Enrichment Endowment Fund. The purpose of the fund is to ensure that literary programs, like Poetry Alive, will continue to flourish at the school for generations to come. The school warmly thanks the Price family for this generous gift that will have a lasting impact on young lives well into the future. The high number of participants also earned Clairbourn a free tent at the race and publicity on the marathon website and race program. The event was an ideal activity for the Clairbourn community because it was local and had a broad range of races including kids runs of 5k and 10k all the way up to the full 8 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • Fall 2012 marathon as well as a bike tour. “Team Clairbourn” had participants in all events and even had a few top finishers. Many students, who were already racking up miles in the school’s Five Mile Club, signed up for the marathon with their classmates and treated it like a finale to the Five Mile Club challenge. Overall, this activity was a great way to build community, have fun, and raise money for the school, which received 15% of the group’s registration fees. Thanks go to Clairbourn parents Chris Chen and Juli Khoe for making “Team Clairbourn” a reality and supporting the worthy goal of physical fitness for all. CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • Fall 2012 9 Campus Kaleidoscope Music Director Rosemary Kiertzner celebrates obtaining her master’s degree, with music teacher Ann Mize and art teacher Shirley Bonaparte, outside of Munson Chapel at Azusa Pacific University were she gave her final showcase performance. ROSEMARY KIERTZNER: MASTER OF MUSIC Clairbourn’s Music Director Earns a Master’s Degree in Conducting Music director Rosemary Kiertzner showcased her newly honed conducting skills at a concert for friends, family, and classmates last April at Azusa Pacific University’s Munson Chapel. The performance was the final assignment in obtaining her master’s degree in conducting. At the concert, she led the APU Wind Ensemble through four pieces, and the audience was delighted by the program’s variety along with the expression, color, and tone achieved in each piece through her conducting. Rosemary’s love of music started at an early age. She learned to play the trombone and then went on to learn six other band instruments. By 16, she had already completed one year of college as a music major. By 17, she was playing trombone professionally and was a student conductor of the Azusa High School Choir. By 18, she was the student 10 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • Fall FALL2012 2012 conductor of the Citrus College Wind Ensemble and then became a principle trombonist for the Southern California Brass Ensemble and the San Gabriel Brass Choir. After graduating from the University of Washington with a B.A. in music and drama, she taught private lessons, played trombone professionally in concerts and orchestras, and also worked with the Grand Mirage Drum & Bugle Corps of Seattle, Washington, as their director and horn instructor. She served as the high school band director at Don Bosco Technical Institute and College and as an adjudicator for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association judging their competitions and training other adjudicators. In 2007, she became the music director at Clairbourn, and it is with pleasure that the school congratulates her on obtaining her master’s degree. Campus Kaleidoscope Illustrator, author, and naturalist Maryanne Wallace presenting her environmental book series on forests, wetlands, deserts, and more to students at a special assembly. MARYANNE WALLACE ILLUSTRATOR, AUTHOR, & NATURALIST Sharing Her Love of Nature and Ecosystems with Students For Maryanne Wallace, the journey to becoming an expert on ecosystems, a writer, and an artist started with the pets she had in childhood—a dog, cat, and a gerbil. In high school, she even had a pet tarantula. This early exposure to the wonders of nature led her to study biology. She later married a botanist—which meant their family vacations were always spent camping and exploring wetlands, seashores, and other natural areas. Her nature books are directly inspired by these family trips. She has authored the well-known books America’s Forests, America’s Seashores, America’s Wetlands, and others on prairies, deserts, and mountains. Each book covers about 200 species with the details provided from her careful notes and photos she takes on her trips. She says, “When you write about nature, it has to be a hands-on experience. I have to go out in nature and see it.” After her travels, she does further research to ensure accuracy. She also showed students how each book begins as a paper mock-up so she can get a clearer picture of what is needed for the final sketches and descriptions. Following the assembly, she led the students on a walk around campus to collect specimens from nature. She taught them how to respectfully collect leaf samples from the surrounding trees, and then, back in the classroom, showed them how to draw the distinguishing characteristics of their leaf. After working with the students, Maryanne stayed for a special book-signing event for her fans. CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 11 SPOTLIGHT on sUCCESS! SOLES FOR SOULS CHARITY Jasmine Gritton and Shea Corwin brought joy and happiness to others through their independent service project where 400 pairs of shoes were donated to the Soles for Souls charity. They mobilized the student body to bring in their shoes that were no longer needed and then partnered with Clairbourn’s fifth graders who counted and sorted the shoes for their class service project. Both Jasmine and Shea were very happy to have exceeded their original goal of 200 shoes and, all-together, the donations filled two SUVs. They even raised funds to help pay for shipping by selling flip-flops for five dollars. TOMMY CHRISTENSEN WINS BASEBALL AWARD Tommy Christensen, now a fifth-grader at Clairbourn, won a baseball award over the summer during the Western World Series Jasmine Gritton and Shea Corwin with donated shoes. games in July. The WWS baseball tournament involves teams from all over the country between the ages of 8 and 15 yearsold. Tommy received the Offensive Player of the Tournament Award for his hitting performance in the 10 and under age group. He also got to meet the famous Dodgers baseball manager Tommy Lasorda. WHIM ‘N RHYTHM PERFORMS Without a single instrument in sight for accompaniment, students found themselves rockin’ and rollin’ to the beats, rhythms, and melodies produced by the members of Whim ‘n Rhythm, the famous Yale University a cappella women’s singing group. PRE-K CRICKETS MAKE ANOTHER MOVIE Straight from the minds of Clairbourn’s imaginative preschoolers came the idea for “Something from Above,” a space-themed movie written and acted by the Pre-K Cricket students. During the spring semester, they developed the storyline and filmed the movie in their free time, and then showed the film in June to a packed house. The final product was filled with amazing special effects and was wonderfully edited and directed by preschool assistant Kyle Schaberg. Sound for the film and film equipment was provided by former Clairbourn parents Kurt Farquhar and Robert Ito & Susan Pereira-Ito, who all work in the film industry. LA FIESTA SPRING program Preschoolers tape a movie scene in the Development Office. This year’s spring program, “La Fiesta,” directed and choreographed by music director Rosemary Kiertzner, was a fiesta of color, song, and enthusiasm. The students, wearing a variety of traditional outfits, sang and danced their way through a list of festive songs celebrating Latin culture including “Three Caballeros Y Senoritas,” “Buenos Dias,” “Three Ancient Aztecs,” and “La Bamba.” In addition to singing with the chorus, some students served as historical narrators, drummers, soloists, and musicians. The performance was a true showcase of the advancements each child has been making in developing their musical and performance skills throughout the year. SPRING CARNIVAL & ART SHOW Carnival Chairs and Carmen Ductoc earned major kudos last spring for organizing all the elements of the Conner Corley and Sarah Waite performing in the Spring Program. La Fiesta-themed carnival. Jam-packed with festive decorations, performers, and activities, families had everything they needed to enjoy a magical day together. Many parents donated money to sponsor rides, attractions, and food booths, and also gave their time to set up and staff the attractions. There was an iPad giveaway, a cake walk game (with a stunning array of creative cakes), a dunk tank, craft area, face painting, a Super-Soaker® maze, carnival games, and much more. The annual art show, held in the MPB, was also a big hit and provided a cool respite for families from the sun and fast pace of the carnival. I can’t imagine waking up in the morning and not being dropped off at Clairbourn, or not going to Chapel. I can’t imagine not saying hello to all the friends and teachers I have come to love over my time here. I know high school is going to be a great experience, but I will always miss this school and the memories I have fostered here. My first teacher at Clairbourn was Mrs. Taylor, and she was so nice. She made my first year at Clairbourn unforgettable. I felt welcome from the second I stepped into that classroom. First grade was just as great as Kindergarten. Our class went on interesting field trips to JPL and the L.A. Zoo,—opportunities that I am so grateful the school can provide. Second grade was one of my favorite years: that was the year I had Mrs. Wreede, memorized poems like “The Monstrous Glisson-Glop,” and studied the Titanic, communities, and the rainforest. In third grade, I had Ms. Gauthier, who taught me so much: how to improve my writing, how to pay better attention in class, and how to act like a good pioneer! Middle school proved to be a real challenge—at first. Probably the most important lesson I learned was how to manage my time well, and it proved to be a very important lesson. I played Puck in the Shakespeare play and still had time to get through my work. Being in the play will always be one of my favorite Clairbourn memories. At first, I was afraid to come out of my shell and act—I was nervous about what other people might think if I acted weird or silly on stage. But as the weeks rolled by, I realized that it was more important to not be afraid and just have fun—and I did! My three years in middle school were the best three years of my academic life. Even just the ordinary days—the days when we are just walking around, chatting, maybe singing, or running from study hall to math—are a treasure because I was surrounded by such nice people. I am so grateful that I was able to spend time here on this beautiful campus and was able to have such wonderful teachers and such fun, loyal friends. I am grateful that my family has been so supportive during my years here— whether they were helping me study for a math or science test or spending countless hours with the CFA to help enhance my Clairbourn experience. I am grateful that this school has wonderful and unique features such as SMART Boards, computers, enough textbooks for everyone, and beautiful, green trees and lawns—features that many schools don’t have. I’m grateful for the school library and Mrs. Knight who introduced me to the amazing world of books. I’m grateful that I’ve learned so much here—everything from how to multiply double-digit numbers to how to be a good friend. I’ll take everything I’ve learned with me to high school—some of these takeaways being all the memories I have, all of the academic knowledge I have acquired, and knowledge about ethics, morals, and being a good person. And everything I’ve learned is important—as the poster in Mr. Guyer’s room says, “No learning ever goes to waste.” CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 21 GRADUATION 2012 starting to change for me. Not only was I entering middle school, but I was starting to really think about my value system. This was partially due to Clairbourn’s Christian views and Code of Ethics. Electra Williams I had a joyous childhood, and a major contributing factor for this, along with my family, was Clairbourn School. I remember my first day here. I was ready bright and early for school. This was where I met the little version of Erin, and we soon became friends. This was the first great aspect of Clairbourn life that I experienced: an authentic and innocent friendship. Early on, this school taught me to be kind and loving to all my peers, as I would be treated with the same kindness. Clairbourn helped me to cultivate compassion and courtesy very early in life, and its value system was shared and respected by all of us. Clairbourn’s Code of Ethics includes respect, responsibility, honesty, citizenship, and spirituality. Growing up, I was taught to live by these values ingrained in me both at school and at home. Integrity and morality have become integral parts of my character and enable me to know what is right and what is wrong. Both values are important beacons in directing our actions. Singing patriotic songs every morning, as well as saying the Lord’s Prayer all together as a school, elevated my sense of pride in the country that I live in and even enhanced my religious beliefs. Even Clairbourn’s motto, “Truth Without Fear” has influenced my character as a brave and honest individual. Now that I am finishing eighth grade at Clairbourn, I have only marvelous memories of my childhood. I have gained lasting knowledge and experience, I am socially apt, I try to live by a certain Code of Ethics, and I can choose right from wrong. Here at Clairbourn, we felt very relaxed, comfortable, and secure, but at the same time, we were motivated to strive for excellence. It has been a very nurturing environment for me all of these years. I am grateful to all my teachers and to Dr. Nafie, our mentoring headmaster. They were a great source of inspiration to me, and were role models to all of us. I am also grateful to all the parents who worked in harmony with our school and helped create a significant synergy with obvious results. And to conclude, here is a favorite saying by Dr. Seuss for the graduating class: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” I really enjoyed my first few teachers, and I appreciated their guidance. This is another thing that I have learned to be grateful for. I have kept in touch with most of the teachers and have had lasting relationships with them. Teachers are an essential factor in the quality of a school, and the teachers at Clairbourn have done nothing but help me to strive for excellence—to be the best I can. Now skipping forward a couple of years….in sixth grade, life was really 22 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 Audrey Vu, Mary Farley, Albert Chu, Erin Songwang, Daniel Erdody, and Nicole Kiyabu. GRADUATION 2012 finally began to achieve my goals; I was finally able to be proud of myself. Max Vasquez I have been at Clairbourn for almost my whole life. I have grown physically, as well as mentally, during these years, and Clairbourn has always been there to help me along my way. I was taught many lessons, but usually it was the hidden ones which affected me the most. Although learning about the rainforests and American history really did make me much smarter, it was the understanding that school is for learning to understand ourselves and others which has meant the most to me. From third to fifth grade I was often told to behave by my teachers, and I never quite understood that the most important thing was to better myself as a student. All of my teachers tried their best to help me be more focused, but I was slow to learn that lesson. Mrs. Halferty was a great teacher. She worked hard to help me become a better student. I remember being invited with several of my friends to Mrs. Halferty’s house for dinner. It was then that I felt that I wanted to be good student and a better person in general. My parents began to expect more from me, and with their help, I Sports were just as fun and fulfilling as my studies. I am so honored to have been coached by Coach Paciorek, who taught us far more than the fundamentals of sports. Mr. Bonaparte taught me that reading is one of the greatest ways of expanding the mind. If not for him, I feel that I would not even be close to the same person I am today. From second grade all the way up to seventh grade, I enjoyed the company of those in day care. I feel that the little things which we learned from Mr. King and each other affected us in much greater ways than we perceived. I had many good experiences here at Clairbourn. One memory, which I am very fond of, is the process of applying for high school. I did my best and wrote my heart out in those essays because I wanted to do my teachers and Clairbourn justice. In the end, all the work paid off, and I feel now that it was not me serving Clairbourn in my applications, but instead, it was Clairbourn serving me. Having finished these applications, I feel that the journey to most goals is much more important than the final accomplishment. Clairbourn has served me well, it provided a great place to learn and encouraged me to do things that I may not have done otherwise. I will miss the ginkgo trees when their leaves are bright green and new as well as when they are yellow before they blanket Dr. Nafie’s perfect lawn. I will miss the hardworking people who keep Clairbourn looking its best. I will miss Mrs. Cogswell, who is the most charming and gracious late-slip purveyor that could exist. I will miss the peace I feel after Chapel as I go off to class after those harried mornings getting to school. But most of all I will miss each and every individual, teacher, mentor, and friend, who has taught me so many lessons and helped me to be the best I can be. Thank you. Spencer Raines, Paul Callahan, Jack Trager, Nathan Cory, and Tylor Heltsley. CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 23 GRADUATION 2012 Thea McKay I could write a book about all of the wonderful things I have gotten to do here at Clairbourn. I have learned many things along the way—like how to share, how to be compassionate towards others, and how to take responsibility for your actions. My time at Clairbourn has been one of the best times of my life, and I will never forget it. My journey began in preschool. I walked into the classroom clutching my mom’s hand, but soon let go when I met my first friend. Kindergarten was very fun, because it was like a zoo. Miss Gorge was a wonderful teacher. We learned to respect animals and each other and be nice to everyone. Then came first grade. I did not like reading at the time, but now I can go through a whole book in one day. to be patient, calm, and tough to take care of three boys, but somehow our family made it to Oregon. Fourth grade taught me that change is good. We got to move to our own part of campus, and I thought that I was so grown up because I had my own locker. I was in Mr. Barner’s class for fifth grade, and I always had to make sure that I was doing the right thing because I thought that Uncle Buck, the stuffed deer head, had camera eyes. Also, [in class] we read a book called Peppermints in the Parlor. Suddenly, Mr. Barner stopped reading, and he started throwing peppermints at us! We went wild. We dove to get all of the stray peppermints. For some reason, candy always tastes better in school. I was not scared of moving to middle school, I was ready for something new. We had more homework and harder classes, but middle school has been great. Armed with all of the lessons of honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, sharing, and friendship that we have learned here at Clairbourn, we will be able to take whatever life throws our way. We got to go back in time and learn what it was like to live on a Pilgrim ship, what it was like to be on the Titanic, and what it felt like to be a Medieval knight. I have discovered my love for history and acting and got to be a true thespian and perform Shakespeare. I am grateful for all of the friends I have made throughout the years, and I am grateful for all of my teachers for always encouraging me to be the best that I can be. I am grateful for my parents who chose to send me to such a wonderful school. Finally, I am grateful that Clairbourn has helped me to develop into a caring, responsible person. With the Code of Ethics to guide us, we have all grown into wonderful people who are ready to take on the world. Now, I would like to end my speech with a word of advice from my hero, Kwi Gon Gin, “Your focus determines your reality.” This quote has proved true through all of my years at Clairbourn. I was excited for second grade because Mrs. Wreede had a great dog named Troy who came to school every day. I was praying that I would be in her class. I got my wish, but we still had to do work, not just play with Troy. In third grade I was the only person on the Oregon Trail to get an all boy family, and it was hard! I had Jessie Miller, Gabriella Foreman, Jade Bryant, Erin Price, Electra Williams, Thea McKay, Shea Corwin, and Ivahnna Espinoza. 24 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 GRADUATION 2012 James Sobieski. Because Clairbourn is based solidly on spiritual values, the Board of Trustees sees flexibility, resiliency, progress, and abundance embracing our forward movement. The Board has undergone some changes over the last year. In August of 2011, our long time Trustee Alice Holmes retired. She had served the Board since November 2000, retiring as President. In March of this year, Trustee Donna Ballenger retired from the Board as she finalized her plans to move to Arden Wood in San Francisco. Donna had served the Board since July of 2005. We are so very grateful to them both for their years of inspiration and dedication. We miss them, but are very pleased to welcome two new members to the Board; Joanie Rimbenieks and Charlotte Hall. We welcome them into the Clairbourn Family. In January 2012, Trustees attended the California Association of Independent Schools Conference in San Francisco. We learned about many new and exciting teaching developments and attended workshops on a variety of subjects pertaining to independent schools. We are excited about the opening of the fund for the expansion of our Library and look forward to fruitful results. In June, we reviewed the Annual Financial Report for Clairbourn for the past year and are very grateful that the school is in good financial condition and debt free. We are most grateful for the careful and wise attention given to overseeing Clairbourn’s finances. And speaking of gratitude, we express it in great quantities for our wonderful Clairbourn Families Association, our wonderful Staff and Faculty, and our wonderful Head of School. Nearly every week I meet with parents who are looking for ways to provide the excellent education they desire for their children while meeting their other needs. For its part, Clairbourn continues to partner with parents in the search for strategies to make a Clairbourn education more affordable. Many of these efforts have met with success. Others have not. In spite of having a reduced number of students, I am pleased to report that in all areas of our school’s activities, Clairbourn has maintained its foundation of proven educational expectations combined with updated technologies aimed at the next generation of students. We continue to make programmatic, technological, and facilities improvements that make today’s Clairbourn education the best we’ve ever offered. From the youngest Junior Pre-Kindergarten novices to our oldest 8th grade leaders, Clairbourn is providing outstanding educational opportunities for young people in a culture that supports and encourages leadership, ethical decision-making, and social responsibility. Thank you for your helping to forge a strong partnership in the education of our future business, social, and political leaders. No investment is more important. Robert W. Nafie, Ph.D. Headmaster 2011–2012 Operating Expenditures Salaries & Benefits $4,385,258 – 64.7% General Operations $843,684 – 12.4% Mortgage $12, 269 – 0.2% Instructional Program $546,448 – 8.1% Tuition Assistance $537,819 – 7.9% Equipment & Capital Assets $453,676 – 6.7% TOTAL EXPENDITURES $6,779,154 Headmaster Nafie (center) with Clairbourn parents Carol Chen, Andrew and Amza Bossom, Rodney Swan, and Bhart Manwani. CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 51 ANNUAL FUND CHAIR: Annual Report The Clairbourn community is terrific! Last year, when we announced the theme of the Annual Fund, “Invest in Our Children”, everyone rallied behind the Annual Fund! 100% of our families donated funds to add the extras that one expects at a quality independent school—extras such as field trips and assemblies, teacher aides in the Early Childhood Department, technology throughout the school, and specialist teachers in art, drama, music, computers, and physical education. Thank you, Clairbourn families! Carmen Montgomery-Castañeda This record breaking support for the Annual Fund rippled through our friends and extended families. Corporate matching gifts and foundation grants were counted as well. The Board of Trustees reached 100% as did the Faculty! With everyone on board, over $300,000 was raised in record time. When we announced the campaign theme and goals at the “thank you” dinner last fall, those parents who had given $1,000 or more acted as a catalyst to ignite support for the goals of the Annual Fund. Grade-Level Captains led the way, reaching all the families, enlisting their support. Thanks to all of them for their enthusiasm and persistence. It was a great year serving as Chairman of the Annual Fund 2011-12. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. Now let’s do it again, Clairbourn! Carmen Montgomery-Castañeda ANNUAL FUND CHAIR Annual Fund Grade Captains 2011-2012. Carmen Montgomery-Castañeda and her Grade Captains achieved 100% participation in this year’s Annual Fund. It has only been done one other time in Clairbourn’s history. Thanks go to Michelle Lampton, Emily Lanstra, Sherri Notley, Penny Frick, Lisa Dietle, Manny Grace, Casey Grace, Livia Chang, Carmen Ductoc, Julie McIlvery, Trish Coane, Carmen Montgomery-Castañeda, Liana Lee, and Liva Gritton. 52 CLAIRBOURN MAGAZINE • FALL 2012 Annual Report: annual fund Clairbourn School is very grateful for the families and friends who supported the Annual Fund 2011–12. Under the amazing and capable leadership of Deena Willis, Laura Unanue, and Julie Erdody, so many wonderful donations were made to our library! It was a week of literary events, including author visits from Lisa Yee, Ridley Pearson, Pseudonymous Bosch, and Marianne Wallace. Activities on the farm included a Patchwork Poster Contest, Buddy Reading, and parents reading in the classrooms. The Fall Social hosted an entertaining County Fair in support of our farm theme. All these activities supported the continuing development of our library collection. Through the proceeds of the book sales and through a Library Wish List, newly published books, curriculum sets, technology subscriptions, author visits, classroom literary enrichment activities, and original artwork, were all added to our library program. This year Poetry Alive, a week-long poetry workshop was brought to the school as a result of our Library Wish List and the generosity of the Price Family. We are truly grateful for the extraordinary and generous support of our families in building our library resources which benefit the entire school population. Thank you to the many volunteers who gave countless hours in support of our students and reading. We are profoundly grateful to realize the support our library receives. Our theme this year was The Spirit of Aloha, and you continuously demonstrated that spirit through your contributions as willing volunteers, generous donors, and active participants in our many events and activities throughout the year. In doing so, you helped enrich CFA, Clairbourn School, and our children’s educational experience for the 2011-12 year and beyond. CFA actually began working on 2011-12 well before school officially began in September. We started off by welcoming new families in May and followed up over the summer with personalized communication by individual Host Families. September kicked off with a flourish of Pool Parties, Playdates, and Coffees on the Quad to welcome everyone back to school. October’s Fall Social County Fair was a grand ole time for the whole family and a terrific tie-in with the Book Fair’s grand opening. For five straight days Clairbourn’s Read Acres in the big red barn (aka the MPB) was the place to be for books, author visits, and special time with dad on Father’s Visiting Day. In November we teed off with the 23rd Annual Cougar Classic Golf Tournament which had its highest number of lady duffers ever. December meant ringing in the holidays with our philanthropic Holiday Giving program and festive Sugar Plum Breakfast and Holiday Boutique. Now half way through the school year, we dove into 2012 with our January Distinguished Speaker Evening and continued to work hard over the next three months on our biggest event of the year, the 15th Annual Spring Benefit. Held in April at the elegant Jonathan Club, Clairbourn’s Supper Club with the Rat Pack was a fabulous party and highly successful fundraiser—definitely one for the memory books! Two weeks later in May we celebrated La Fiesta Carnival, a day of family fun for the whole community featuring rides, games, food, and Dr. Nafie in the dunk tank. Finally, in June we hosted the annual Staff Appreciation Lunch to thank Clairbourn’s fabulous staff for all they do for CFA and for our children. On top of these annual events, CFA operated our own Cougar Corner snack shop, sold thousands of dollars worth of scrip, held Used Uniform and Spiritwear sales, coordinated refreshments and drivers for our many sports teams, and served hundreds of In-N-Out burgers, Shakey’s pizza slices, KFC strips, and Wienerschnitzel hot dogs at our ever popular Special Lunch Days. In addition, we hosted monthly Parent Meetings complete with door prizes, Cougar Kudos, Spirit of Aloha recognition, and special educational Guest Speakers. Through these efforts, CFA accomplished its dual goals of both serving our community as well as raising significant funds for our children’s school. I’m pleased to report that CFA generated over $275,000 for Clairbourn School for the 2011-12 year. Over 80% of these funds are directed towards covering general operating expenses, with another 17% benefitting the Clairbourn Library through the Book Fair’s Wish List and the Benefit’s Library Expansion Fund, and 3% in donations going towards our Holiday Giving philanthropy, Foothill Unity Center. Thank you all for sharing your Spirit of Aloha and for a truly wonderful year. Special thanks go to the CFA Board, Dr. Nafie, and Clairbourn’s administration and staff for their constant support. It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as your CFA President.
