Spring 2008: Volume 24, Number 1
Message From the President
Dear Members,
We made it! The blustery days of winter are behind us and we’re
moving full steam ahead into the second quarter of 2008. No longer do I see
the countdown to spring as I drive to work everyday; rather, I see
advertisements reminding me to plant my flowers. Pretty soon, instead of
walking right in and sitting down at my favorite local restaurants, I’ll have to
put my name on a waiting list. And in a few weeks, my dogs will be upset
because they won’t be allowed to walk on the beach again until October.
Now is the time where many businesses start gearing up for the
summertime crowds that frequent our area from Memorial Day through
Labor Day. SMCC is here for you and we would love to help you attract
business in any way we can. Be on the lookout for our 2008-2009 map that is
scheduled to be distributed by Memorial Day weekend. This is a great piece
of literature for both locals and visitors of our area and they can be found at
many local businesses and also at Parkway rest stop 100 in the tourism booth.
Our Sizzlin’ Summer Expo 2008 is scheduled for Wednesday, June
4 at Doolan’s in Spring Lake. Purchasing a table is a great way to showcase
your business and get your name out there. Every year our Expo gets bigger
and better and this one is sure to follow suit. We will have former NY Giant
Keith Elias there to sign autographs and over 13 restaurants already willing to
donate food to our food court. We encourage all members to come!
Admission is free, the food is guaranteed to be great and it’s a fantastic way
to support your Chamber.
As always, I’d like to thank you for your continued support and
dedication to the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce.
Thank you for your continued support of the Chamber.
Kindest regards,
Dana

CORPORATE WELLNESS
Have you asked yourself any of these questions?
• How do I reduce my Healthcare Costs?
• How do I reduce Presenteeism?
• How do I help make my employees healthier?
First, l need to provide a definition of Presenteeism, Wikipedia, defines it as the opposite of absenteeism. In contrast to absenteeism, when
employees are absent from work illegitimately, presenteeism discusses the problems faced when employees come to work in spite of illness,
which can have similar negative repercussion on business performance.
The answer to these questions may be to introduce a Wellness Program!
Are you aware of the following facts about the health of your employees?
• A Holistic approach to wellness and disease management keeps employees healthier
• With 2008 forecasts of double digit increases in health care costs, American companies will be paying more than $8,400/worker
• At any given time, one in 10 workers experience depression costing companies $53 Billion.
• Controlling chronic illness in the US is one of the country’s most compelling challenges, Most of these chronic diseases are for the
most part, curable.
• According to Tommy Thompson, former US Secretary of Health & Human Services, roughly 95% of the 1.7 trillion spent annually
on health care goes to direct medical services. Only 5% allocated to preventing disease and promoting health.
The typical Wellness Program usually includes:
• Health Risk Assessments
• Wellness Coaching
• Smoke and Weight Cessation Programs
• Various Online Components
• Physical Fitness
• Management Reports
It is important to note that, to be successful, these programs must have the full endorsement and backing of management. Without these
elements the program is likely to fail. Successful programs usually include employee incentives to insure employee participation.

upstairs room for the event, along with a delicious buffet of hors d’hoeuvres. A special
thank you to Kelly, Kristin and George of Farrell’s for their professional assistance
throughout the evening. This was the SMCC’s fourth speed networking event and Brick
Chamber’s first. This has quickly become one of the chamber’s most popular events, as it
guarantees at least 17 contacts in one night. It was a very successful event with over 65
people in attendance.
With the first ring of the bell, the ‘A’ group began their two minute introduction
in an effort to leave a lasting impact on their new contact. At the second ring, it was time
to let the ‘B’ group to have a turn. After those two minutes, the ‘B’ group rotated one seat
as the ‘A’ group remained stationary. Those who were not participating in the actual
speed networking mingled among each other and took notes for future speed networking
opportunities. As the final bell rang, the speed networkers commented that it was
beneficial, useful and intense. The SMCC and Brick Chamber hope that everyone took
some valuable contacts away from the evening.

Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Holds
Membership Meeting at The Mill
On March 18, The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) held its
March General Membership Meeting luncheon at The Mill, Old Mill Road, Spring Lake
Heights. Anthony, Merrill and The Mill staff provided a delicious lunch buffet and
professional service in one of their elegant rooms overlooking the lake. Envirotactics,

Dallas.
Jim Dallas gave a very informative and interesting presentation on Environmental
Awareness. He spoke about underwater storage, radon, mold and leaks and how each of
these could be affecting people’s homes. He informed everyone that the State offers
assistance in loans and grants; and underwater storage leaks could be covered in part or in whole by insurance
companies. Mr. Dallas continued with some community awareness that affects the Wall, Sea Girt and Manasquan areas
where harmful chemicals were found in the groundwater due to contaminants from two local dry cleaners. Questions
from the crowd of approximately fifty people were answered, creating an interactive and lively discussion.
SMCC President Dana Gangemi of WayComm
Consulting welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the
following new SMCC members in attendance: Gary Lowe and

Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Holds
Membership Meeting at Doolan’s
The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce held its January General Membership Meeting
breakfast at beautiful Doolan’s on Highway 71 in Spring Lake Heights. Susan Doolan and her staff
provided a delicious buffet accompanied by professional and courteous service in their lovely back dining
room. Thank you to Pavese-McCormick Insurance Companies for sponsoring this wonderful event.
Scott Richards, Chief Operating Officer of ExpressCare, was the guest speaker. Scott has 27 years
of healthcare experience and has worked in nearly every segment of the healthcare sector. He is currently
the Chief Transformation Officer for EMX, a diversified, multi-entity healthcare provider and services
organization that includes Specialty Physician, Urgent Care and Primary Care practices; a Management Services Organization; a
Billing Company; a Medical Malpractice Company; and a not-for-profit Research Foundation.
Despite the previous night’s winter weather, there were sixty in attendance and Scott’s topic of Retail Healthcare was
fascinating to all. He stated that there are currently about 700 retail healthcare centers in the United States and by 2010, that number
is predicted to grow to 5000-6000. These centers are found in or near pharmacies and retail stores so that one can have an all-in-one
shopping experience. Pharmacies and retailers want to be a part of destination shopping and the retail healthcare centers have the
opportunity to provide quality healthcare with convenience and accessibility. These centers offer basic healthcare for common
health issues (sinus pain, blood pressure, sore throats, ear infections), allow opportunities for people who can’t afford insured
healthcare and can identify issues and if necessary, refer the patient to a specialist.
New SMCC President Dana Gangemi warmly welcomed everyone to the meeting and commented that she is honored to be
the new president and is looking forward to a wonderful 2008. She thanked Susan Doolan of Doolan’s for providing the beautiful
venue and delicious buffet and next thanked Pavese McCormick Insurance Companies for
sponsoring the meeting. Dana welcomed and introduced the following new SMCC
members in attendance: Tom Boyle of Tom Boyle, LLC – Renovations, Home
Improvements and Repairs, 1540 Lakewood Road, Manasquan, 732-600-9004; Kathy

Ambassador Committee held its New and Prospective Welcome Party at Crown Beer
Distributors in Manasquan. The Ambassador Committee holds these events several
times each year in an effort to welcome members who have recently joined the
Chamber, and also to introduce prospective members to the Chamber and allow them to
learn about the Chamber.
Approximately eighty people attended this Welcome Party, creating a lively
atmosphere. The Ambassador Committee and Board of Directors welcomed the new
and prospective members as they mingled and participated in the Find the Fibber game.
This game engages its participants and the winners are offered 15% off their
membership. SMCC President and Ambassador Committee Chairperson Dana
Gangemi thanked everyone for attending and hoped to see everyone at future events.
A special thank you to Marc Pimpinella of Crown Beer for graciously hosting
the event at his beautiful venue and also for donating beverages for all to enjoy. The
SMCC would also like to thank new member Tuscany Caterers of Jackson for
generously donating the delicious dinner buffet composed of a variety of Italian
delicacies. Also, thank you to Sheri Sica and Lou Vaccaro of Super Foodtown for

The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce holds WIBC Meeting
The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business Council (WIBC) held its first meeting
of 2008 on January 17 at the Chamber Office in Belmar. Committee Chairperson Tracey Rovito of First Metropolitan
Mortgage welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced guest speaker Ed Kozemchak of Action Coach.
Mr. Kozemchak engaged everyone throughout his presentation ‘What Are Your Business Goals for 2008?’ He
gave advice on how to make and obtain realistic goals for the New Year. He continued by explaining ways to push
oneself to achieve more than what’s been defined. The women broke into small groups and reviewed each other’s goals
and Mr. Kozemchak answered their questions and discussed any further concerns. The next WIBC Meeting will be May
15 at Premier Executive Suites, 2150 Highway 35, Suite 250, Wall from 5:45 to 7:15 pm. The speaker will be Chris
Ruisi of The Coach’s Zone and the topic is ‘Owning the Room.’
