CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB,
A giant of the seas
The CMA CGM Group took delivery on 10th of November, in South Korea, of the CMA CGM
CHRISTOPHE COLOMB. New flagship of the Group, it is to date, one of the world’s largest container
ship.
The vessel is operated on FAL service (linking Asia to Europe) and operated in partnership with
Maersk.
Rotation is as follows: Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Yantian, Algeciras, Rotterdam,
Bremerhaven.

Deck arrangements
Whereas a container ship usually has a single superstructure on deck, CMA CGM Christophe Colomb
distinguishes itself by the position of its superstructure, located in the front, which maximizes space
utilization, guarantees a better visibility from the bridge and reinforces the vessel’s hull. Moreover, the
tanks of CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB, located underneath the superstructure, are protected by the
double hull of the vessel, in compliance with the MARPOL 12A regulation which will come into effect in
August 2010.
The location of the engine room, close to the propeller also maximizes space utilization.

Fight climate change
In line with the Group’s commitment to the environment and sustainable development, CMA CGM
Christophe Colomb integrates numerous environmental technologies that actively contributes to
the battle against global warming, and limits the environmental footprint of its activities.
An electronic injection system for the engine:
This latest generation of engines, significantly reducing consumption
of fuel (-3%) and oil (-25%).
A twisted leading edge rudder:
The vessel is equipped with this innovative rudder. Its leading edge is
orientated to optimize the flow of water, considerably reducing energy
consumption and CO2 emissions.
A Pre-Swirl Stator ®:
CMA CGM Christophe Colomb is the first vessel of the Group to be
fitted with this ingenious new device. The Pre-Swirl Stator ® alters the
inflow angles to the propeller to maximize propulsion efficiency.
Together with the twisted leading edge rudder it optimizes a ship’s
hydrodynamics to cut fuel consumption and greenhouse gas
emissions by 2% to 4%.
An optimized hull design improving the hydrodynamics of the vessel, as well as the equipment
required to connect to a port’s electricity supply during operations.

Preserve the marine environment
CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB also has additional tanks for treating bilge, engine and
grey water. All equipment on deck is electric to eliminate the problem of hydraulic fluid leaks.
CMA CGM CHRISTOPHE COLOMB is equipped with a new pollution prevention technique
called the Fast Oil Recovery System.
Developed by JLMD, this reliable, safe and simple system enables hydrocarbons to be rapidly
recovered at any time without going through the hull.
Each tank is fitted with connecting pipes so that hot water can be injected in and hydrocarbons
extracted.
Initially developed for petrol tankers, the technique has been adapted for container ships
thanks to joint efforts by the JLMD Ecologic Group and the CMA CGM Group’s New Building
Department.
