Hindman ‘68 Fred Krehbiel ‘55 HEAD OF SCHOOL Paul Barton ABOUT THE AVERY COONLEY SCHOOL The Avery Coonley School is an independent, non-denominational school enrolling bright and academically gifted boys and girls from age three through eighth grade. Each year, students from approximately 40 surrounding communities attend the school, giving strong testimony to the school’s widespread reputation for educational excellence. The school was founded in 1906 by Queene Ferry (Mrs. Avery) Coonley, whose desire to offer an alternative to traditional public institutions was inspired by the educational philosophy of John Dewey and other progressive thinkers of her day. This philosophy is based on the concept that school should encourage a child to become an enthusiastic participant in the learning process. Mrs. Coonley began her first school in a cottage on the Coonley Estate in Riverside, Illinois. The present school facility was built in 1929 and received listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Reflecting the belief that education is a lifelong process, the school seeks to instill a sense of joy and excitement about learning at an early age. Hallmarks of an Avery Coonley School education include small class size, an accomplished and dedicated faculty, and a wide spectrum of learning opportunities. The challenging curriculum is designed to foster critical and creative thinking, self-reliance, and concern for others. 4 WELCOME Dear Friends of The Avery Coonley School, It is our honor and pleasure to welcome everyone to the 32nd Annual Auction of The Avery Coonley School. This event is vitally important as funds raised play an important role in fulfilling the school’s mission of providing an exemplary independent school education for each of our students. Further, our school community is strengthened through the volunteerism and friendship generated by this event. A wonderfully creative and energetic group of volunteers has produced another exciting Auction. Under the dedicated leadership of Auction Chairs, Zainab Baig and Brendan Sheehy, the Auction Committee has worked tirelessly to provide our guests with a delicious dinner, entertaining surroundings, and an exciting array of gifts and services. We acknowledge the many Auction volunteers for their commitment of time, talent, and personal resources. We also wish to thank the many contributors whose donations comprise the live and silent auctions, the members of the Fleur de Lis Society for their leadership gifts, and the corporate sponsors for their underwriting support. Truly, it is only through the cooperative efforts of so many kind and generous friends that we are able to have such a fine and profitable event. Thank you for supporting our mission and celebrating together the conclusion of another successful school year through your presence here this evening. Have a wonderful evening! We are pleased that you are with us tonight as we gather together as a community to show our support for The Avery Coonley School. This year’s Auction theme was inspired by the 1956 French film The Red Balloon which follows a young boy who befriends a red balloon and takes a journey with it through the streets of Paris. Like this young boy, our students have begun their life’s journey. We are so fortunate for the educational experiences and adventures the School provides. We extend very special thanks to the dedicated faculty of our school. Each school day, they prepare our students for the world ahead by instilling in them a love of learning that will last them a lifetime. We have truly enjoyed working on the Auction with such an exceptionally talented and dedicated committee of volunteers. The philanthropic example set by our founder, Mrs. Coonley, is evident in the wonderful spirit and commitment of our volunteers. Without the philanthropic support of our donors, this event would not be possible. We share our most heartfelt appreciation for the generosity of our parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and the business community for each and every donation. We are thankful for the opportunity to work together. Now, we encourage everyone to bid high and bid often, all to benefit our wonderful students, as their dreams take flight. Merci, Zainab Baig and Brendan Sheehy 2014 AUCTION CHAIRS 8 Thank you! The donors and volunteers on the following pages are gratefully acknowledged for supporting The Red Balloon. Special recognition is shared with the members of the faculty, who in dedicated service to the students, are the foundation of this community. Special thanks to Steven Bosco for his extraordinary support of the Auction as Director of Technology and to our amazing Maintenance Department for their dedication to this special event. Most importantly, the students of ACS bring intelligence, energy, and joy to the school each day. They are the inspiration for the Auction. The Society, established in 1990, is a critical component of this event as it enables the school to put more of the funds raised directly into programs that benefit our children. Sincere appreciation is shared with all contributors to the Fleur de Lis Society. CLASS MEMORY BOOKS 23 FUND-A-NEED RENOVATION OF THE MOCHEL COMMONS Each year we ask our Auction guests to “raise their paddles” to make a charitable contribution to a worthy philanthropic project. These projects, which have included the restoration of the Rock Pond, the renovation of the Old Library, SMART boards for the classrooms, and the playground equipment, benefit the entire student body. Since its inception, Fund-A-Need has raised $475,000 that has directly enhanced our children’s experiences. This year’s project is the renovation of an area that is at the heart of the school, The Mochel Commons. The Commons was constructed as part of the 1993 school addition and its furniture and décor are original to this time. This central space connects, both physically and socially, the Early School, Lower School and Middle School, providing a well-utilized place vital for academics, recreation, and sustenance. Here, students enjoy their lunchtime with one another, share exhibits, and come together before and after school with their friends. Families gather here as well for receptions to celebrate special events and to work on volunteer projects. 24 FUND-A-NEED FUND-A-NEED The proposed renovations will make the Commons more welcoming and will increase the flexibility and functionality of this important space. Beth Trebelhorn-Treleven www.tre2creative.com 773.350.3240 This year’s Auction theme was inspired by the 1956 French film The Red Balloon by filmmaker Albert Lamorisse and follows the adventures of a young boy who befriends a red balloon and takes a journey with it through the streets of Paris. Much like our children, this young boy discovers his dreams through exploration, loyalty, and enduring friendship.
