LAKEVIEW JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1962 'DORIAN DECATUR, ILLINOIS, SPARTANS D -=- IN ACTION DEDICATION TO MR. BILL BROWN It is with a great deal of pleasure that we, the Dorian staff, and the students of Lakeview High School, dedicate the 1962 Dorian to Mr. David William Brown. Mr. Brown a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, came to Lakeview in 1956. During the past six years, he has taught five levels of mathematics. three levels of science, and drivers training. He has also served as a sponsor for two clubs - the Hobby Club and the :Mathematics Club. For the past four years, he has been sponsor chairman for the class of 1962. It is they who know him best. They describe him as understanding, responsible, and a capable teacher, who also has that depth and warmth which make him a real person as well. A firm believer that one should keep in pace with the times, Mr. Brown is presently continuing his education, by working towards his master's degree at the University of Illinois. 5 ADMINIS PRI'\( JP,\L Di/\ 1d \\ Bc~i;:s I II \ B. \f.S E ~lilhkin unh·crsity DE-\N OF GIRLS Velda M. Robinson, MODULES IN During 1961-62 the DccaturLakevicw Plan was put into operation after three years of study and planning on the part of the facult) . Its purpose is to imprm e educational opportunities for Lakeview studt•nts by placing increa~ed responsibility on the students fo1 learning, by using latest research findings to determine group or class size, and by organizing the faculty into teaching teams. In a traditional schedule students meet for one period usually 55 minutes, for 5 days a week. One Miss Casey, a large group presenter, introduces a unit on writing to those enrolled in junior English. :\Ir. Philbrook supcrvi~cs an experiment in chemistry "ith a small group. These students study independently, preparing outside assignments and projects. T he teachers on the teaching tc•am work together to develop cour~e content and to decide coopcratiwly \\hat should be taught and how it should be presented. Emphasis is placed on the use of multimedia teaching aids in order t hat the students can see as well as hear the materials being presented. ACTION teacher is 1 esponsible fm each class group of 30 or 35 stu<ll'nts. Under the Decatur-Lake' iew Plan, students meet in classes of ,·arying size sonwtinws in small groups of 7 to 12 students and sometimes in large gt oup classes of up to 212 studt'nh fot varying lengths of time. Tht•re arc fifteen modules. t'ach lasting 27 minutes during thl' <lay. Largt· gt oups meet for one module tlm•t• days a week, and small groups mt·et for two or three successive modules on the other two days. 01 Miss Rice conducts a Latin class in the lan~·u.11{c laboratory. ::\Ir. Paulson's small group in economic geography has a group discussion. \lrs. Lamar lectures on grammar fundamentals to a large group in beginning French This is based on the theory that people learn more and better when an appeal is made to two senses hearing and seeing. The pictures on these pages illustrate the program's three major learning experiences - largt· group acti,·ity. small group acti\ it}'. and independent study.
