16 YEARS OF SERVICE TO KGH
By Roz Annunziato
In the late 90’s, as I contemplated retirement, I began to look for volunteering
opportunities to fill in some of my anticipated leisure time. I wasn’t sure where I wanted
to volunteer, but I knew that it had to be the right fit for me. At that time on one of
the back pages of the Buffalo News, right next to the comics, they had a volunteer
column. It listed available opportunities in Buffalo. One day, I saw Kevin Guest House
listed and thought it sounded like a possibility, so I phoned and made an appointment
to go in for an interview and a tour of the house. Jenn Ann Burger was the Director at
the time. She took me around and explained the duties. I liked what I saw and agreed
to become a volunteer. That was sixteen years ago and I hope to be here for at least
sixteen more.
Long time volunteer—Roz Annunziato
Initially, I was still teaching and so I would come in on Saturday, sit at the table in the
old staff kitchen (now Pam’s office) and correct papers, answer the phone and drink
lots of coffee. It was very, very quiet.
When I retired in 2000, Jenn Ann said that she would like me to come in during the

week. She said I would like it so much more because there would be more activity.
I got very nervous because I had no office skills and thought I would have all these

secretarial duties. Not so. I started coming in on Wednesdays and truly enjoyed
working the desk. The office duties consisted of answering the phone, making
reservations, checking people out and working the copy machine. I was a big girl. I
could do that.
I also worked special events, such as the Niagara Frontier Builders’ Home Show,
the Festival of Trees, Affaire of the Heart, Oktoberfest and Open House. I had been
researching the history of the house and gotten to know about the Speyser and Beer
families who had owned the house from 1904 to 1972. I decided to dress up in turn of
the century costume and give guided tours of the house during Open House. It was

fun and I became the “ghost” of Ernestine Speyser who with her husband, purchased
encounter along the way. Here, at Kevin Guest House, the many wonderful guests I
have had occasion to meet and greet have been a blessing in my life. Their stories and
circumstances tug at your heart. I even met the brother of a girl I had known in 1964,
while I attended the University of Puerto Rico. Amazing to say the least.
Last but not least, the staff and the other volunteers here at the house have been
absolutely wonderful to work with. I now work every Friday and I can honestly say
that it is one of the most enjoyable days of my week.

Greetings AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
“In Finnish, the month of Tammikuu (January) means the heart of the winter and because the name
literally means Oak moon, it can be inferred that the oak tree is the heart of grand forest with many
valuable trees as opposed to the typical Arctic forests which are typically pine and spruce.” (Wikipedia)
To me, this is the heir of Kevin Guest House; as mighty as an old Oak tree and as everlasting as the
great pine. Our house, built in 1865 of wood and plaster, is a mighty house built to last. Rich in
history, Kevin Guest House is one of the last remaining asymmetrical Queen Anne style homes in the
Buffalo Niagara Medical campus; but more importantly an anchor in the once residential Fruit Belt
neighborhood of Buffalo.
In 2013 we served 1,046 people. 1,046 people leaving their neighborhoods, cities, towns, and many times their states, to have
treatments and receive care which is often times life-saving. Buffalo is gaining great respect for its medical knowledge, treatment and outcomes, but that’s on the clinical side. The outpatients we serve, whom we call guests, have a great need to be here,
just minutes away from the care of their practitioners. The families we serve have just as great a need for our services as the
patients, although that need is often times less apparent. These guests are either here to be close to their loved ones in the area
hospitals, or here as a caregiver for our guests receiving outpatient care. Either way, it is imperative that all of our guests have the comfort in knowing their belongings are safe and their lodging comforting. They need us. Those reading who have stayed with us know this;
I’m not saying anything you haven’t experienced. But our readers which have never needed our service directly or haven’t experienced
the need to travel for medical care, need to know our importance. Please friend us on Facebook (shameless plug,) and share your story
of your stay, your family, and most importantly, your need for Kevin Guest House.
2014 will prove to be an exciting year. We will celebrate our 42nd anniversary with a re-dedication ceremony and celebration on July
24th, which will include a special unveiling for all of those who attend. But, equally, if not more exciting, we will begin our Capital
Campaign! Yes, after our completion of the feasibility study and many more conversations and information gathering, the vote was a
resounding “Yay.”
This means a lot more work for us as we begin to form committees, work out details, and share our challenges and goals to be successful
in our $2.5 million campaign to build a great new house that will allow us to better serve those we know and to open our doors to the
many others that we have been unable to care for due to the limitations of our 1865 home. We will build with you, our guests, in mind.
Most notably, all suites and bone marrow apartments, will have a private bath, (two in the apartments,) with walk-in shower and bench,
and suites will sleep four to six adults comfortably. Did I mention our new home will come complete with an elevator? Yep, an elevator!
We will finally be able to open our doors to those individuals with mobility challenges in a warm and caring space. There is so much more
to say, but a little mystery for now is a good thing, or so I am told.
However, I will add this one note; we cannot do this alone, or without you, our readers, our families and our friends. Simply put, we will
need dollars to build this home – 12,000 square feet of new space, green-friendly, handicap accessible, ability to double those we care
for, decrease our wait-list etc. So, I ask you to save your pennies, or even dollars. We will need the help and support of our foundations,
corporate friends, volunteers, staff, board and ever so importantly, for our small caring home, you.
Thank you for all you do for us and for the hundreds of guests who stay with us each year. Without you, we would not be able to deliver
our vital mission to outpatients and families who desperately need our care and support.
P.S. Please note that no City, County, State or Federal tax dollars have been used in our expansion planning and this first phase of the infrastructure
work. It has been paid by private gifts to whom and for whom we are ever grateful.
Kevin Guest House, the nation’s first Hospital
Hospitality House, offers a safe, warm, secure
respite providing comfort, support and affordable
accommodations for patients and their loved ones seeking

We hit the Jackpot at the Affaire of the Heart 21...the House wins!, raising
more than $63,000 at our 21st annual signature event. The event was held
in the historic Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhan’s and featured fantastic
food by Oliver’s, Jack Civiletto and the Pyramid Band, auctions, basket
raffles and more! A special moment of the evening was the presentation
of the Kevin Garvey Award to Merle and Janice Whitehead of RealtyUSA,
steadfast supporters of Kevin Guest House and our mission. Thank you
to our distinguished speaker and friend. Dr. Donald Trump, President &
CEO of Roswell Park Cancer Institute for his inspiring words about our
partnership and the future of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
