Wolfe, Alumni Relations/Advancement Assistant Thank you to The Camera Box for providing pictures for this issue of our Annual Report/Trinity Triangle. 2 TriniTy HigH ScHool AnnuAl reporT WELCOME Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Trinity: Thank you for your generosity and support of Trinity High School over this past year. As you read through this report, you will see that a total of more than $700,000 in restricted and unrestricted gifts was received – the highest figure in our 49 year history. We are especially grateful to all of our donors given the ongoing uncertain status of the economy here and around the world. The annual fund’s single most important objective is to provide the best possible learning experience for our students. Over these pages you will see evidence, be it academically, through apostolic service, or a host of co-curricular and social activities, of how our remarkable students excel – a direct result of your support. It is not just the quality and quantity of their performances, but the dedication and selflessness with which they achieve success. We are blessed with an incredible faculty and staff, enthusiastic students, and generous and caring alumni, parents and friends. This annual report is only one reflection of that fact. As we move forward to continue the tradition of excellence in education begun almost 50 years ago, please know how grateful we are to all of you for your commitment to improving life and learning at Trinity High School. Sincerely, Dr. David Bouton Principal/Head Learner = = = = = = = = = = = BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2011-2012 Maureen Murphy Andres ’75, Chair Dr. Jeffrey Conforti Rev. William Forrey Rev. Michael Grab Rev. Businesses direct funds that would otherwise go to taxes towards a non-profit scholarship organization. One such foundation, Neumann Scholarship Foundation provides partial scholarships to students in the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Harrisburg. For more information on how you can participate and help the students and families of Trinity High School, please call Janet Quigley, Director of Advancement, at 717-761-2228 or e-mail [email protected] Thank you to the following businesses which generously gave to the Neumann Scholarship Foundation to benefit Trinity High School students for the 2012-2013 academic year: ACS Claim Service, Inc. Anonymous Assured Claimant Transport Service, Inc. Carlisle Syn-Tec, Inc. Daily Underwriters of America JFC Staffing Associates Keystone Tax Associates, LLC NRG Controls Select Specialty Hospital Thank you to the following Educational Improvement Tax Credit foundations that have made contributions from businesses to Trinity High School: Bravo Foundation Bridge Educational Foundation We are sincerely grateful to all the businesses participating in the EITC program that have chosen Trinity as the recipient of their tax credits; our alumni, families, and friends who established Named Scholarships and/or donated specifically to the tuition assistance fund; and our “tuition angels” who sponsored one or more students’ full tuition. Their generosity allows our families to choose Trinity High School for their children. We are pleased to report that 189 students received tuition assistance for the 2012-2013 academic year, ranging from $100 to full tuition ($6,575). In addition, seven new scholarships were established for the Class of 2016 this year. Each of the scholarships total $6,000, $3,000 of which will be awarded the first year, with $1,000 awarded each of the following three years, based upon established criteria. Seven incoming freshman students were awarded these scholarships. 14 TriniTy HigH ScHool AnnuAl reporT ENDOWMENTS – A SOUND INVESTMENT IN A BETTER FUTURE Endowments ensure secure, perpetual income for Trinity High School. All you have to do is: Log on to www.giantfoodstores.com/aplus to designate our school online (Trinity Code – 01255) or send an e-mail with your Giant BONUSCARD number to [email protected] SCRIP PROGRAM Now it’s easier than ever to shop, dine or give a gift- all while earning tuition credits! The Advancement Office has now started keeping gift cards in stock for area retailers. Gift cards are available for: Panera, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Carraba’s, Outback Steakhouse, Subway, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Home Goods, Kohl’s, Boscov’s, JC Penney, Barnes & Noble and Dick’s. Orders for additional vendors will be made on the first Tuesday of each month. WHAT IS SCRIP? Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for our organization. HOW SCRIP GENERATES REVENUE FOR YOU The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Our school buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to families like yours for full face value. The discount – from two to fifteen percent or more – is our school’s revenue, which we then split with our families – earning them tuition credits. SCRIP IS “SHOPPING CART FUNDRAISING” Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything. Participants produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. FIND OUT MORE Ask your scrip coordinator listed below for the latest participating retailer list. Then put your shopping dollars to work for our school! [email protected]. Advertise Your Business Trinity offers an affordable alternative to advertising your product or service through the school’s Field & Gym Banner Program. Support your school and familiarize thousands of local consumers with your logo and services. So what makes that difference? Perspective. It’s one of the most important aspects a person must consider in any situation.” TriniTy TriAngle 21 ALUMNI SUCCESS Trinity alumnus Mark Butler truly believes in selling “good stuff cheap.” As President and CEO of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, one of the most successful retail companies in America, Mark doesn’t view his job as work; it’s a part of his life. “People are happier and more successful doing what they like doing,” he remarked. Well said and so true. Moving from his hometown of Mountain Top, a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania, in the early 70’s, Mark and his family settled in Mount Holly Springs. Mark began his education in Central PA at St. Patrick School in Carlisle. When it came time for high school, his neighborhood friends went to a nearby public school, but Mark’s parents chose Trinity High School for their son. “My mom and dad made a staunch commitment to Catholic education. Trinity mirrored the morals and values I was already receiving at home on a daily basis,” he said. When asked about his Trinity days, Mark reminisced about teachers, classes, and classmates - many of whom he is still friends with today. “I remember Mr. Cackovic as being passionate and animated,” Butler said. When asked what his favorite subject at Trinity was, he stated without hesitation, “P.E.,” and quickly remembered what the acronym COBO stood for – Challenge of Brotherly Opposition. Mark said that accounting class would be his second choice, quickly adding that “academics weren’t my strong point.” With Mark’s rise to president of one of Central PA’s fastest growing companies, that seems hard to believe. After graduating from Trinity in 1976, Mark answered an advertisement in the newspaper for a job at a local lumber company. One might say this was the stepping stone for an extraordinary career. While earning only $2.88 an hour, Mark gained invaluable knowledge and honed a sharp mind for business - thanks to his boss, Mort Bernstein. Mort became Mark’s mentor, teacher, and friend, and Mark credits Mort’s guidance and example for his success today. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, the lumber industry in Central Pennsylvania was buffeted by many forces: the Three Mile Island emergency, local competition, and the economy in general. So, Mort Bernstein, his friends Ollie Rosenberg and Harry Coverman, and Mark embarked on a new venture and founded Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in 1982, with the first store located in Mechanicsburg. Over the next two decades, Ollie’s grew from just 2 stores to over 120 in 13 states, with over 3,500 employees. Mark was named President and CEO of the company in 2003. Mark has been the recipient of numerous awards, both locally and statewide. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Kasey Kahne Foundation and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. In 2007, when the Senators Partners bought Harrisburg’s minor league baseball team from the City, Mark became a co-investor/ co-owner of the Senators. But that hasn’t distracted Mark from his first love – Ollie’s. For the past 10 years, Ollie’s has remained one of our region’s 50 fastest-growing companies, according to the Central PA Business Journal. Mark is proud to report that this year he has two companies on the list – Ollie’s and the Harrisburg Senators. When asked what advice he would give to Trinity students today, Mark said simply, “hard work pays, take chances,” and quoting from Winston Churchill “…failure is never fatal; courage is what counts”. The Trinity family is proud of Mark Butler! Good for your Heart…Good for your Brain: Trinity Health Club We all know that regular exercise is one of the key components of staying healthy. As little as 30 minutes a day of some type of physical activity can help with weight control, lower blood pressure, and reduce stress. But did you know that you can actually improve your memory and, for students, their grades? A Trinity friend, Development Board member, and parent, Brad Hollinger is a strong believer in the positive effects of daily exercise, and is a staunch supporter of the connection between exercise and the brain and the impact it has on young adults. That is why he is providing Trinity High School with an amazing gift – funding for the construction of a fitness and wellness center (dubbed the Trinity Health Club). “Mr. Hollinger approached Trinity last year with his idea to build a facility that will be accessible to all students and staff,” said Principal Dr. David Bouton. “This addition will create an inviting place where every student and staff member can participate in physical activity each day. In addition, learning about and utilizing the equipment in the fitness center can be incorporated into our current PE curriculum.” In Spark, a book written by John J. Ratey, M.D., the connection between physical activity and the brain is explored. Programs following the Spark 24 TriniTy Triangle method have started up in schools throughout the country, and along with it came some pretty impressive results. In Dr. Ratey’s research, he came across an article which simply stated, “exercise elevates Miracle-Gro throughout the brain.” Schools that have adopted the Spark method found their students to be more motivated and invigorated. “Thanks to Mr. Hollinger, we can now provide our students not only a safe, comfortable place to keep fit, but the added benefit of participating in our own study of the body-mind connection. Through a grant from the Highmark Healthy High 5 program several years ago for the purchase of heart-rate monitors, our students can now use those monitors along with cardio equipment, giving both themselves and their instructors an accurate picture of the intensity of their workout and of their level of fitness,” said Bouton. “As we lead our young men and women into the 21st century with the values, learning skills, and life skills that Trinity provides, we are proud that our graduates will also possess healthy habits of mind, body, and spirit that will sustain them throughout adult life.” The Trinity Health Club is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2013. He was selected as a member of Harvard’s REU summer intern program and is researching “biomimetic micro robotics” – he will be building a small-scale, life-like replica of a centipede, which will move just like a real centipede and be flexible enough to be stepped on without being fully crushed. The final model will most likely be used as a reconnaissance drone, with full video and audio outputs, for soldiers in future conflicts. The idea is that by creating robots that completely resemble real-life, living creatures, we come closer and closer to advanced robots seen in science fiction all the time. Even at this point it almost sounds like science fiction! And, with any luck, Matthew will be attending Graduate School there after graduating from Bucknell next year. The reason I am writing to inform you all of this is to reinforce the incredible value of a Trinity education and how much of an impact it has made on Matthew’s life. He often attributes his intellectual curiosity, work ethic, and ability to learn to his high school career, which not only challenges students, but truly impacts their learning and imprints upon them important values they will carry for the rest of their life. Who ever thought that Harvard would be a possibility, let alone a reality? Too often I am asked, “Why Trinity?” Many people think that a good education is equivalent to the amount of programs offered, to the size of a school and the scope of its curriculum. But this opportunity just reinforces the fact that a true education lies in the dedication of faculty and commitment to excellence; quality over quantity. I am sure you hear this a lot, but I felt the need to say “keep up the good work.” Trinity has had a profound influence on me and my children, and I am so grateful to all of you for continuing this proud tradition. I hope you realize what you all do for your students every day, and that all of their successes in life can be traced back to the lessons learned at this school. And so, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, and please ever strive to uphold the standards that make Trinity what it is. Dear Friends, As many of you are already aware, Toni Clouse Myers, class of ’81 died as a result of criminal homicide on July 15, 2006. Since that day, Toni’s sisters (Shelly Clouse Morrow,’80, and Wendy Clouse Deibler ’83) decided to organize a fund raiser in memory of Toni with proceeds going to Domestic Violence of Cumberland and Perry Counties. To date this event has raised approximately $100,000 for the victims of domestic violence. Last year members of the class of ’81 joined in the event, and celebrated a mini class reunion, with committee member Debbie O’Brien Burger. This year they will be celebrating the 4th Annual Toni Clouse Myers Sunflower Ball on October 27, 2012 at the Radisson Hotel in Camp Hill. It is an evening of awareness, fundraising, and FUN! We welcome any support you can give for this worthy event by joining us at the event this year, monetary donations, or auction item donations. More information for this year’s event can be found at www.dvscp.org/sunflower.html. We are forever grateful for your caring and compassion. The focus of the study was to determine if a proposed capital fundraising campaign has a good chance of success; i.e., how much money Trinity can reasonably raise, how long it would take to do so, identification of potential leaders and donors, and identification of strengths and weaknesses of the school. A series of confidential interviews with the school’s board and staff, key supporters, and prospective major donors was conducted, along with an online survey for current/past parents, alumni and friends. Trinity’s feasibility study was conducted by fundraising consultants from Kirby-Smith Associates. This report will be posted on the school’s website and, for current parents, on Edline in the near future. Here is a summary of the results of the general on-line survey, completed by 333 individuals: ➢ 58% rated their overall view of Trinity High School as very good; 22% rated it as superior ➢ 42% consider themselves to be involved in the school; 21% are very involved ➢ Trinity’s top three strengths were: 1. academics/college acceptances/preparation; 2. faith/community/discipline/service; and 3. Extra-curricular activities/athletics ➢ 83% are aware of our Master Plan, with 46% rating it as good; 24% rating it as excellent ➢ 52% felt a capital campaign was a realistic way to raise the funds, with 55% confident that we could raise the money needed throughout a 5 year period. ➢ 80% of participants replied that they would be supportive/very supportive Thank you for your input regarding our forthcoming capital campaign. We look forward to sharing the results of the feasibility study with you and moving forward with our plan to address the most crucial projects – projects that are key to Trinity’s continued success. CHANGES IN THE HALLS OF TRINITY Two faculty members said farewell to Trinity High School at the end of the 2011-2012 school year as they retire and begin the next chapters in their lives. Together, they have served a total of 61 years teaching hundreds of young adults. Jim McGovern – Mr. McGovern taught English for more than three decades! In addition to teaching English, Mr. McGovern coached many of our sports teams, most recently the golf team, and was moderator for the junior class. His quick wit and vast knowledge on a variety of subjects made him not only a great teacher, but a great colleague. Bob Casey – Mr. Casey began his teaching career at THS in 1984. Besides his work in the classroom teaching English, Mr. Casey moderated the Debate and Forensics Clubs, Chorus, and Stage Crew, and directed numerous musicals throughout the years. His laugh was infectious, and he was loved by the students, faculty, and staff. Mr. Casey’s wife, Michele is an alumnus, as are their children, Jamie and Kathlene. In addition, Trinity also said good-bye to the following faculty and staff: Wanda Gabler taught Religion and joined the faculty in 2000. Her seven children graduated from THS - Tyson, Colin, Evan, Shana, Hanna, Logan, and Quintin. Noreen Campbell, a Trig/Pre Calculus and Algebra teacher joined the faculty in 2009. Her three children also graduated from Trinity - Catherine, Kerry, and Hannah. Dennis Bupp taught Chemistry and has been a member of the faculty since 2009. Olivia Fuhrman King was the library assistant and joined the staff in 2010. In addition to being an alumnus herself, her three boys graduated from THS - Brendan, Nicholas, and Colin. These talented individuals will be missed. We would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to advancing our school in so many ways. We wish them luck on their various endeavors in life and ask that they keep the Trinity experience close to their hearts. TriniTy Triangle 28 ALUMNI ADVERTISING: SHARE YOUR SUCCESS! These stories will be included in a commemorative book for Trinity’s 50th Anniversary in 2013/14. We have heard several nostalgic stories so far… did you know that students wanted the school’s mascot to be the Trinity Tombstones rather than the Shamrocks? As you all know, there is a small cemetery beside the school. Rumor has it that the students were overruled by the Brothers! Another alum recounted a fond gym class memory of Coach Cackovic, yelling at guys slacking off during gym class by telling them that “they’ll be in trouble when the Soviets invaded!” We want your stories, tidbits of interesting information, or pictures of your days at THS. We look forward to talking with you soon! HOMECOMING WEEKEND 2012 is proving to be a busy one this year! Thurs., October 11th – The excitement begins with a bonfire to get everyone “pumped” as the ‘Rocks take on Boiling Springs Fri. evening. Fri., October 12th – Stop by the Alumni tent to purchase your ticket and catch up with friends. Then join us after the game in the lobby outside the auditorium for refreshments and fun. Congratulations to Christina Davies’12, first place winner of the second annual Art of Green Spaces poster contest sponsored by Project EverGreen and Birds & Blooms magazine, a Reader’s Digest publication. More than 1,800 posters were received, with twelve contest winners from eight states chosen as winners in four categories, grades K-2, 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Christina was 1st place winner of the grades 10-12 category. Congratulations Christina! We’re proud of you! TriniTy TriAngle 29 Trinity High School NON-PROFIT ORG.
