The First Sunday of Lent
February 14, 2016
World Marriage Day
February 14, 2016
Building Strength
The ritual act of professing our faith
during Sunday Mass is no substitution
for living it in our daily lives. When
we are tested by temptations, our faith
is put to the test, too, and we are faced
with a choice of who we are and how
we want to live. Lent is a time to
examine our choices. Lent is a time to
grow in who we are.
Heavenly Father,
through the intercession of
the Holy Family, help us
treasure the gift of marriage that reflects the love of
Christ for the Church, where the self-giving love of
husband and wife unites them more perfectly and
cooperates in your plan for new life created in your
image.
Just as God led Israel to a “land flowing with milk and
honey” (first reading), so will God lead us to salvation if
each of us “calls on the name of the Lord” (second reading).
For us, though, our desert is the demands of everyday living
and our salvation is found on the cross. Each day we take up
our cross and lay down our life for the sake of others, we are
building strength to resist temptation and come to greater
well-being. Our simple acts of kindness are helping us resist
temptation. Our doing well whatever the task at hand helps
us resist temptation. Our complimenting another or offering
a word of encouragement helps us resist temptation.
We don’t have to go out into the desert to find temptation!
But we do need God’s nearness to resist it. And that God has
promised us.
—Living Liturgy
The Parish Office will be closed on
Monday, February 15th in
observance of the
President’s Day holiday.
A Look at the
YEAR OF MERCY
with Bishop Brom
Saturday, February 27th
10am-noon in the Parish Hall
Everyone is welcome!
Bishop Brom will be here to
explore the concept of “Mercy” in
Sacred Scripture and talk about
the Face of Mercy: Jesus and the
Church. Join us for this free
special presentation!
Help us support men and women
in their vocation of marriage,
especially in difficult times when
they join their sufferings to the Cross.
Help us uphold the institution of marriage
in our society as the place where
love is nurtured and family life begins.
Help us acknowledge that our future
depends on this love and on your
providential care for us. Amen.
Diocese
Of
San
Diego
2016 Annual
Catholic
Appeal
Last weekend we kicked off the Diocese of San
Diego’s 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. Our parish goal
this year is $22,000. Participation in the Annual
Catholic Appeal accomplishes something simple but
profound: it allows us all to be merciful as our Father
is merciful. Because of your gift, so many people will
experience God’s mercy and rest in His peace.
Please make your pledge today!
There are many ways to respond to the
Annual Catholic Appeal:
—A monthly or quarterly pledge
—A one-time cash gift
—A credit card or electronic funds transfer, which may
now be processed by the Diocese, or you may visit
www.sdcatholic.org
—A gift of stocks and bonds
We would love to have 100% participation in this
appeal. We encourage everyone in the parish to
prayerfully consider how you can contribute.

Stewardship—Building up the Community of God
Number of Registered Families receiving envelopes: 694 —an average of 130 of whom tithe weekly using those envelopes
Our GOAL this year: 500 families using their weekly envelopes.
Please contribute using your envelopes.
The Joy of Giving
Amount we need each week to cover parish operating costs:
General Collection, February 7, 2016:
Deficit for the week of February 7, 2016:
$7,155.00
$7,117.00
—$ 38.00
Building Fund—February 7, 2016:
$2,525.00
WOW! What a week for giving...we had about 40 MORE people using their envelopes. Thank you!
Do you give to God from your “first fruits,” the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover?
Do you remember that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day.

St. Augustine High School Scholarship Winners
The Administrations of St. Augustine High School and
St. Didacus Parish School are proud to announce that three
of our eighth grade boys have won scholarships to Saints for
the 2016-2017 school year. Each scholarship is valued at
$10,000. Austin Brown, Kian Kelly, and Ethan Kula were
among the top ten scorers of the High School Placement
Exam. This is the first time in the history of the Saint's scholarship program that three students from one school have
won in a single year. Congratulations to the three young
men, their parents, and especially to the faculty and staff of
St. Didacus Parish School. What an honor for all concerned
and a great validation for the learning that is occurring at
St. Didacus School. May our Lord continue to bless these
young men, their families, and our entire school community.
LEGUMES FOR LENT
Do a Work of Mercy – Feed the Hungry
Buy a Bag of Beans!
This year for Lent we’re supporting the
“Legumes For Lent” Campaign that benefits Casa de los Pobres,
“House of the Poor.” Casa de los Pobres was originally founded in
1957 by Franciscan Sisters in the Colonia Altamira neighborhood of
Tijuana, Mexico. For more than 50 years, Casa de los Pobres has
served the “poorest of the poor” in Tijuana. The poor and destitute
people that come to the Casa’s doors are sick, hungry, frightened,
and cold — but also humble and hopeful. No one is ever turned
away. As you can imagine, the need is great. For the meals and for
the grocery bag program for the elderly, handicapped and families,
they use over 7,000 pounds of dried pinto beans per month which
costs between $4,000 — $5,000.
Since beans are such an absolute staple in the lives of the people
who come to the Casa it would be a great blessing to them for our
parish to join in this Lenten campaign.
They are needing large bags of dried pinto beans or the
equivalent in the form of a check made out to Casa de los Pobres
or a gift card from Costco or Smart & Final (both have outlets in
Tijuana). You can mail checks or gift cards to: Casa de los Pobres,
PO Box 432256, San Ysidro CA 92143-2256. If you would like to
donate actual bags of dried pinto beans please leave them in the
basket at the entrance of the Church.
Friday, February 19th
6:00pm Soup dinner provided by
the Parish Council
7:00pm —Bilingual Taize Prayer Service
This is a prayerful service with time for meditation,
veneration of the cross and silence. The Choir is at its
best and this is a perfect time to slow down and think
about the Lenten season.
THIS Weekend!

The First Sunday of Lent
February 14, 2016
We talk about “having a
relationship with Jesus Christ.”
The corporal works of mercy give
us a powerful real relationship
with Christ, for in the poor, we see
the poor Man of Galilee. In the
naked, we see the naked Man upon
the cross. In the homeless, we encounter the One who
had nowhere to lay his head. In the prisoner, we visit
Christ the condemned. In those who thirst, we meet
the One who cried, “I thirst!” and when we bury the
dead, we face the One who died for us.
—Catechist Handbook
Kid’s Corner
Lent begins with the story of
Jesus being tempted by Satan
in the desert. Why do you
think God allowed Jesus to be
tempted by Satan? Do you
think God ever allows us to be
tempted or tested? There are
many times in our lives that we
are tested. These are the times that God wants us
to call upon the Holy Spirit for the strength to help
us make the right choices.
You can call on the Spirit any time you are tempted
to do something that you know is wrong or that will
hurt someone. The Spirit wants to help you to live
more like Jesus. Use this time during Lent to help
you get into the habit of calling on the Holy Spirit.
He is here to help!

Sunday at the 8:30am
Mass our Catechumens
will receive the Rite of
Sending and the children
will receive the Rite of
Election.
The Rite of Election for
the adults is on Sunday at 4pm. The Rite of Election is
the time that the Catechumens offer testimony of their
faithfulness to the process they began in September.
They will be accompanied by their sponsor. An
integral part of this ceremony with the Bishop is the
signing of the Book of the Elect. When they sign this
book they will seal their covenant with God. Just as
they were signed with His cross in the Rite of Sending,
they are now signing with Him in a promise to know,
love and follow Him throughout their life. As the
bishop signs this same book in the Rite of Election, he
is receiving them into our family of Christ. They are
now called the “elect” and have been elected to receive
the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil Mass.

value than the prayer of the
lips.” —St. Augustine of Hippo

I Domingo de Cuaresma
vida? ¿Qué debo hacer para superarla? ¿Cuáles son
mis tentaciones menores, diarias? ¿Qué debo hacer?

Assistance for Catholic Education
“Our entire community will always be grateful for the support
we receive from the Annual Catholic Appeal,” said Gina Olsen,
principal of St. Rita School. “As an urban school with financial
pressures, it helps us support our teachers and, without it, our
doors would be closed.”
Our beloved Bishop Flores shared with us a beautiful vision
for Catholic education in our diocese. He said, “The role our
Catholic schools play in educating and forming the faith of our
children continues to be invaluable today.
Not only will these children become the Church of tomorrow,
but they will also fill the most important roles in leadership and
ministry as the Church reaches out to the world.”
Your support of the Annual Catholic Appeal helps us make our
vision a reality for Catholic education, making it accessible to
those in need right here in the Diocese of San Diego
Our diocese includes a network of many wonderful Catholic
schools, educating more than 15,000 students each year. Most
of our schools are in great shape, while other schools truly
need our support.
The Annual Catholic Appeal currently provides some funding to
11 schools in need, impacting the lives of over 1,600 students.
This program is called Assistance for Catholic Education.
Over the past ten years with the support of the Annual
Catholic Appeal, Catholic schools in San Diego have received
assistance grants totaling more than five million dollars!
These grants have been made to keep the vital mission of
Catholic education both accessible and affordable for children
of families living in neighborhoods that have been the most
impacted by economic challenges.
Our Response as Stewards
