Fourth Sunday of Easter
Right Here and Right Now
The role of a shepherd was very
well known in Palestine, and they
knew that a flock of sheep knew
their master by the sound of his
voice. Jesus compared his
followers to sheep, and he was
their shepherd. When he spoke,
the people knew very well what
he was talking about. He promised
them eternal life if they accepted
him as Master and lord of their
lives.
He offers that to us right here and
now. All the littleness of our earthly life would be gone and
we would know the splendor of being loved by God. He
promised a life that would know no end. Death would be the
beginning of living forever. He promised a life that was
secure. Nothing could snatch that life from his hand. It did
not mean that they would be saved from sorrow, suffering, or
death. It did mean that they would know the serenity and
power of God.
Jesus made a tremendous claim to the crowd of Jews, and he
showed them his tremendous trust in God. He had been
speaking to them about his sheep and his flock and that no
one would ever take them away from him. He revealed that
his Father gave him the sheep, and both the sheep and he
were secure in his Father’s hand. Jesus was so sure of
himself because he was sure of his Father. He then told them
and us that he and the Father were one.
Jesus is saying that the unity between himself and the Father
is the same unity he wants for us. His prayer is that all Christians be united in love as he is united in love with the Father.
—The Bread of Life
Jesus reassures us in this week’s Gospel
that “no one can take us out of his hand.”
Because using the hands is often such a
powerful gesture, it ought to come as no
surprise to us that hands are used as a
symbol in all of our Catholic sacraments.
Four of the sacraments (baptism, confirmation, sacrament of the sick, holy orders)
expressly call for an imposition of the hands that includes actual physical touch. The other three sacraments (Eucharist, penance, marriage)
use extended hands. The gesture of extended hands usually signifies
an epiclesis, which means calling down the Holy Spirit in blessing and/
or consecration. In all cases the symbolic gesture with hands conveys
the intimacy with which God chooses to be connected with us.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
April 17, 2016
A Message from
Pope Francis
Is
God
calling
you?
On this day dedicated
to prayer for vocations,
I urge all the faithful to
assume their responsibility for the care and discernment of vocations. When the
Apostles sought someone to take the place of Judas
Iscariot, Saint Peter brought together one hundred and
twenty of the brethren and in order to chose seven
deacons, a group of disciples was gathered. Saint Paul
gave Titus specific criteria for the selection of presbyters.
Still today, the Christian community is always present in
the discernment of vocations, in their formation and in
their perseverance.
We ask the Lord to grant to all those who are on a vocational journey a deep sense of belonging to the Church;
and that the Holy Spirit may strengthen among Pastors,
and all of the faithful, a deeper sense of communion,
discernment and spiritual fatherhood and motherhood.
Father of mercy, who gave your Son for our salvation and
who strengthens us always with the gifts of your Spirit,
grant us Christian communities which are alive, fervent
and joyous, which are fonts of fraternal life, and which
nurture in the young the desire to consecrate themselves
to you and to the work of evangelization. Sustain these
communities in their commitment to offer appropriate
vocational catechesis and ways of proceeding towards
each one’s particular consecration. Grant the wisdom
needed for vocational discernment, so that in all things
the greatness of your merciful love may shine forth. May
Mary, Mother and guide of Jesus, intercede for each
Christian community, so that, made fruitful by the Holy
Spirit, it may be a source of true vocations for the service
of the holy People of God.
Please pray that young men and women hear and
respond generously to the Lord's call to the
priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of
apostolic life or secular institutes. You can find
many resources to promote a culture of
vocations on the United Conference of Catholic
Bishops website: www.usccb.org/vocations/
Pope Francis posted his first
Instagram on March 19th and today
has more than 2.2 million followers.

Number of Registered Families receiving envelopes: 694 —an average of 130 of whom tithe weekly using those envelopes
Our GOAL this year: 500 families using their weekly envelopes.
Please contribute using your envelopes.
The Joy of Giving
Amount we need each week to cover parish operating costs:
General Collection, April 10, 2016:
Deficit for the week of April 10, 2016:
Building Fund—April 10, 2016:

Because the disciples heard Our Lord’s call, they were able to spread the Gospel message with strength
and vitality. We, too, can experience that same joy if we take time to open our hearts, listen to God, ask for
His direction and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our lives and our decisions.

Corporal Works of Mercy
Shelter the Homeless—
Catholic Charities’
Rachel’s Women’s Center
Rachel’s Women’s Center helps women
in need to find access to programs and
services. In 2015, 1,933 women visited
Rachel’s Women’s Center. 492 women
were assessed by their mental health team for ongoing
care. They answered 153 emergency calls for assistance:
72 mental health calls, 70 medical issue calls and 11 calls
from women reporting personal assault on the street. 246
women were sheltered and housed. 26 women enrolled in
The Tomorrow Project (90% of participants are over the
age of 46. Almost all women report issues with drugs,
alcohol and/or mental illness).
Rachel’s Women’s Center is offering
real hope and solutions to these
women. You may be wondering how
you could make a difference in these
women’s lives. There are volunteer
opportunities available and you can
find out more information by checking out the Catholic
Charities website at: www.ccdsd.org/programs/homelesswomens-services/ or call them directly at 619-236-9074.
You can also help out by donating
items from their wish list:
Toilet paper
Paper towels
Meal service supplies: paper plates, bowls, napkins, plastic
utensils, 6 oz cups
Wash clothes & bath towels
Combs, brushes, hair picks
Laundry detergent
Deodorant
Razors
Money is always good, too! Make your check out to
Catholic Charities and in the memo line write “Rachel’s
Women’s Center” and mail it directly to: Catholic Charities,
349 Cedar Street, San Diego CA 92101-3197.
You can bring your donations directly to Rachel’s Women’s
Center at 759 8th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. You may
also drop them off at the Parish Office during the month of
April and we can deliver them for you.
Another way to get involved is to pray for all those involved
in this important ministry.
On our Cover is a photo of a mid-3rd century fresco
of “The Good Shepherd” in the Catacomb of
St. Calixtus Church in Rome.

My Closest Moment to God
I think that my closest moment to God
was at the Easter Vigil Mass. On this
day, all Catholics are waiting to hear
the good news the next morning that
Jesus is alive again. For young people
like me, it seems like a weird thing to
be contemplating the death and resurrection of a person that lived a very
long time ago, but at this Mass it seemed like the most natural
thing in the world. The warmth and glow of the fire outside the
church and under the stars made me feel the peaceful presence
of God. One would think that you might feel closest to God
when you are on towering mountains, near vast oceans, or
looking upon one of God’s great creations in nature. However,
on this somewhat normal Easter Vigil, something about the
presence of my neighbors, friends, family and parish
community made me feel like God was with me.
God can come to people in many ways, and I felt like He came
to me in an ordinary yet beautiful way. It wasn’t a situation
where I had to stand awkwardly and quietly in reverence, but a
time where I could smile because I was surrounded by my
friends and even had a laugh when the wind almost blew out
their candles. When I lit my own small candle from the big fire
in the middle, it made me feel special because I had my own
little flame to nurture and protect in the darkness. I always
thought that when God was near me, it would be something
mysterious and hard to understand, but I felt God in a way that
made perfect sense. In John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the Light of
the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but
will have the Light of life.” Well on that night, I literally had
the Light. Even when we had to blow out the candles when we
went into the church, I still had the “Light of life” inside me,
and I still do.

Amoris Laetitia
“The Joy of Love”
Last week, Pope Francis released
the post-synodal apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia” or “The Joy of Love.” This is
Pope Francis’ prayerful reflection on the discussions and
outcomes of two synods of bishops: an Extraordinary
Synod in 2014, and an Ordinary Synod in 2015, both on
the topic of marriage and the family. The exhortation is
meant to share with the Church the Holy Father's
teaching. You can read the full text at the Vatican’s
website: Vatican.va.

Bienvenidos
Como ser una Iglesia de
brazos abiertos
¿Que hago YO para que la
Iglesia sea una comunidad
donde cada uno se sienta
acogido y comprendido,
a mi.”
