It’s because of the KITTEN SEASON where there are always numerous reports to our phone line on stray kittens found. We were also very busy organising the biggest indoor fund raiser STARLIGHT SOIREE 2016 which took place on June 10. It was a huge success and we had the best turnout. Pictures can be seen on Page 8. From April up to now (KITTEN SEASON) we have already taken in over 100 stray kittens (our vet bills are HUGE!) While many of them have been adopted, there are still many that are waiting for adoptive homes. Right now we are promoting ADOPTING a PAIR of KITTENSs with a REDUCED ADOPTION FEE. For details and the list of kittens up for adoption, please check our website. Finally, I would like you to SAVE the DATE of September 10, 2016 as this is when our annual PET FEST & WALKATHON will take place. Please refer to Page 9 for details of the event. Our cats are WAITING for HOMES at GLOBAL PET FOODS 905-501-0411 Burnhamthorpe/ Creditview I wish you a happy and safe summer! It does not have a shelter, business venue or paid staff. It receives no support from the Government, City or the SPCA. Our funds come from donations, adoption fees and fund raising events. Without a shelter, MHS depends on the kindness of foster parents who open their heart and home to animals in need. By fostering a pet you are helping to SAVE a LIFE. Since 1999, MHS has rescued over 6,000 homeless animals. MHS Is NOT ‘Mississauga Animal Services’, the animal shelter which is run by the City. Of course with success comes gratitude. I am grateful to all the volunteers of MHS involved in helping with happy endings, especially to Susan Wyatt’s instrumental involvement in bringing us together as a family. Also, I hope this may encourage others to express their feelings to those involved in creating happy endings, and to make donations to MHS so they can help more pets in need. Many will remember CASEY. He was the kitten that fell into the evil hands of a human and needed a hip replacement about 2 years ago. MHS came to Casey's rescue and ensured he got the surgery he needed. CASEY Casey has just turned 2. At last weighing he was 9 LBS 12 OZS. The vet said she was both impressed and happy for Casey. He has good muscle mass around his hip. He has healed excellently. He is a happy, healthy and still quite playful, cat. He is mama's Hero. GABBY is a black shadow cat that I also adopted through MHS. I've probably had her for about 2 years. She is still a bit of a nervous cat. She doesn't like when the apartment door is opened or closed. She tends to run and hide when it is. She does not like strangers. BUT, when home with just us, she is a very loving and playful cat. She is mama's Angel. I did not adopt these beautiful fur-babies. They both needed to adopt me as well as each other. I'm so grateful they were given a second chance with humans. I have the funniest, loving, playful pets. With a little time and patience they themselves have become the very best of friends. GABBY I recently took in a fostered cat COCO, now called CHELSEA. She was a stray kitten found in bad shape and with a protruding eye. She needs daily eye medication and a surgery will eventually be needed when she’s older. She’s an angel and I have already told Lily I WILL ADOPT HER! Oh My God!!! How many are there? One, two, three…..and counting??? No, this THRILL is not gambling and it’s not counting money…it’s watching the birth of precious little knownothing PUPPIES!!...in your home! That’s what has been happening in my home for the past 3-4 years. Helping the Mommy dog whelp precious little beings and nurturing them to well behaved (hopefully!) dogs. YOU go through the birthing process with the canine Mom as if it was your child giving birth! AWWW, they pop out and Mommy dog does the rest, opening the birth sac and licking them clean. Lick, lick, lick till the pup gives out a cry or a big breath. Then they sleep. But Mommy dog is NOT done YET. NEXT!!! I went through 3-4 four litters and each one was the UTMOST, FANTASTIC and unique experience! It’s right up there next to giving birth yourself, but WITHOUT the delivery pain! OLIVE or OLLIE OIL was the Mommy of our first letter. She was scared, pregnant, tired, hungry and traveled 15 hours in a rescue van with a dozen dogs from the US pounds rescued from death row. Saving a canine life HAS NO BOUNDARIES! So Ollie gave birth to 5-6 pups…in my kitchen floor early in the morning. I was not even awake yet. I heard a loud yelp from Ollie and JUMPED up from bed, ran out to where the noise came from and saw blood spots! YIKES! I was scared that she had a problem delivery! Nope, she had it ALL under control. In fact, I missed the first 3 births. I was in LaLa dream land. Each birth came ½ hr. apart. So I guess the first was born rd at 6am. I guess the 3 one was a bit tough for her to give out a yelp. So I guided her back to whelping box which we had made for her and she delivered the rest of her litter. I guess she trusted me from the start because she allowed me the honor of positioning her newborns away from the birthing area in the box. It seemed she knew she was in our home to help her and her pups. Oh, she was a very loving attentive Mommy and so was I! I saw how she only left her box to eat and do her personal business and RIGHT back into the box she went. For the first 4 weeks, I watched the pups from crawling like little slugs, to opening eyes, walking like little drunks, to funny mischievous puppies, each with their own individual personalities! th OH, the second month 5-8 week, this was a bit challenging as the pups are walking, running, getting into lots of funny trouble! Even Ollie was barking at her little pups trying to get them to behave! We had them penned in a corner of our kitchen. They were just beautiful, healthy, loving pups! Growing by pounds weekly! And by that time, we had adopted parents coming to see them and ultimately take them to their TUXEDO, one of the loving homes. And we adopted one of them, TUXEDO! pups, adopted by Maria! To this day, the kids on our street ask me if we are getting any more litters. We were the most POPULAR house in our neighbourhood! The kids went through every step from after-birthing to adoption. They helped me feed, clean, play, and teach the pups. It’s a great experience for them to see how precious life is, especially of our dearest “man’s best friend”! “YULIN DOG MEAT Festival” - CALL By Joanna Kurnat for AWARENESS IMAGINE your beloved pet - dog or cat being stolen, brutally killed and served as a dish. Unfortunately, this is reality that takes place in many parts of the world. Despite worldwide protests, the cruel 10 days YULIN DOG MEAT EATING FESTIVAL was held again this year. Every year, since 2009, 10,000 - 15,000 dogs are killed for eating at the festival in Yulin, a city in south China. Many of the dogs are believed to have been pets stolen from their owners or simply picked up off the street. Unfortunately, cats are also on the menu. These animals are captured and transported over long distance under horrific conditions. They are being held in crowded cages without food or water until they are killed.people say that eating dog or cat meat is a tradition in China and it is hypocritical that criticism comes from those people Some that eat meat such as pork, beef or chicken. However, many of us will agree that culture must never be allowed to be an excuse for cruelty to people or animals. Ricky Gervais posted: "Whether you are an atheist or believer, vegan or hunter, you must agree that torturing a dog then skinning it alive is “WRONG". This year, dozens of celebrities, academics and international welfare organizations protested against this cruel YULIN DOG MEAT FESTIVAL, putting more pressure on local authorities than ever before. Some animal lovers resorted to buying some of the dogs in order to rescue them. The truth is, humans are all equally responsible for this regardless of nationality or beliefs. All animals including pigs, cows, chickens, rabbits etc. deserve humane treatment. Yulin Dog Meat Festival is only one of the 1 many examples of mistreating the animals. WE HAVE TO TAKE ACTON! DOG AND CAT MEAT TRADE HAS TO STOP! Free party food and drinks were served and there was a Garage Sale to help raise funds. Some of the ‘MHS alumni’ came and celebrated with us. Pictured here are Maria Chan, her husband and TUXEDO (adopted 6 years ago), and Naomi and DAKOTA (CODA) who was adopted 4 years ago. GLOBAL PET FOODS – “SHOW US YOUR HEART” GLOBAL PET FOODS’ annual “SHOW US YOUR HEART” fund raising campaign was held again this year. A woman walked into my aunt’s animal shelter wanting to have her cat and six kittens spayed and . neutered. our “Is the Mother friendly?” the staff asked. “VERY,” said the woman, casting an eye on the older woman next to her. SPONSORS “That’s how we got into this mess in the first place.” VEGETARIAN LOLLIPOPS Ingredients: Paneer (Cottage Cheese) - 1 cup ( 200 gm) Boiled Potatoes - 2 medium size Chopped Onion - 1 large Baby Corn - 8 Finely chopped Green Chili - 2 Grated Garlic Ginger - 2 tsp Soy Sauce - 1/2 tbsp Black Pepper powder - 1 tsp Corn Flour - 2 tbsp + for dusting Oil for frying Salt to taste Grate the Paneer or simply crumble it. Mix it with all the above ingredients except Oil and Baby corn to form a dough. The dough should not be too hard or too soft. A very soft dough will not hold its shape and too hard a dough will get cracks and wont taste good. Adjust the corn flour if the dough is soft and add some more cottage cheese to make the dough soft. Make medium sized round balls from this dough and pierce the thicker side of the Baby corn in this ball. Press the Paneer ball lightly between your palms to secure it firmly on the Baby corn. Make all the lollipops in the similar way. Keep them in fridge for 15-20 minutes before frying them. This step is optional, but I prefer for two reasons, first is that this method ensures less oil consumed for frying and secondly the lollipops hold their shape firmly. Heat sufficient oil in a wok. Roll the lollipop on the corn flour and tap to remove the excess flour and deep fry for 3-4 minutes on medium heat until crisp and golden brown turning occasionally DID YOU KNOW? Although one sheep may look like any other to a person, members of the same flock have been known to recognize one another even after years of separation. Groups of chickens that live freely establish an order of importance among themselves to determine who eats first and who sleeps where. THANK YOU To all of those who contributed articles to this issue. A big vote of thanks to all of our volunteers, foster parents & donors.
