The Feast of Epiphany
Vision Statement
“We, the people of St. Mary’s, envision a Christ centered ,
welcoming community enriched by the gifts
of a diverse heritage.
We remember our past and are open to our future:
living and sharing the Gospel with enthusiasm, joy and
celebration under the guidance and protection
of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.”
Recordamos nuestro pasado y estamos abiertos a nuestro
Perpetuo Socorro".
Happy New Year to one and all!
New Year is a time for resolutions. We make resolutions to see better days
ahead of us. Our hope is that we do not repeat the ugly past, thus we make the
efforts to make corrections of past mistakes.
Making resolution has spiritual significance. By making resolutions, we admit
our own frailty and plan ahead to improve life. Common resolutions, however,
do not include God. Self-dependence over trust in God is characteristic of most resolutions.
I believe if we include God in our resolutions, our resolutions will be effective for 12 months.

This weekend is the Feast of the Epiphany. Epiphany is Greek for manifestation. This feast is Eastern
and is originally the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Western Church celebrated it for many years as the
feast of the Three Kings.
In present age, the Feast of the Epiphany celebrates three manifestations, as follows: 1) manifestation
of the Son to the magi, 2) manifestation of Jesus in the Baptism in Jordan, and 3) the manifestation of Jesus in
the wedding banquet in Cana. These manifestations speak about the glory of God.
o0o
The presents of the magi. We can notice that the magi (kings, astrologers) were named according to
the gifts they presented to Jesus. Melchior brought gold. Caspar (Gaspar) brought frankincense and Balthazar,
myrrh.
John Chrysostom says these gifts are fit for the newborn King. The gifts define Jesus’s being King,
Priest and Prophet.
O0o
There are unique celebrations of the Feast of the Three Kings around the world. For our Mexican
brothers and sisters for example, they bake King’s bagel and inside the bread are small figurines of the baby
Jesus. At the reception after the Mass of the Feast of the Three Kings, the
King’s bagel will be divided and distributed. Whoever gets the figurine inside the bread will be responsible of organizing a food feast on the Feast of
the Presentation of the Lord (February 2). During the food festival, they will
prepare Mexican cuisines like tamales, carne asada, burritos.

Remember that the Christmas Season is not over yet. So it is still
appropriate to greet each one Merry Christmas! Thus let me say: Merry
Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to one and all!
Father Cit

Solemnity of the Epiphany of Our Lord - Jan 4
"The Magi adored a simple child in the arms of Mother
Mary, because in Him they recognized the source of the
dual light that had guided them: the light of the star and
the light of Scripture. They recognized in Him the King of
the Jews, glory of Israel, but also the King of all Peoples." (Pope Benedict XVI, Epiphany 2006)
