LEED for Recreation Facilities
Presented By Architecture 49 -
Achieving LEED certification or high performance building
requires careful planning during the design stage of the
project. In particular, ice and aquatic centres are energy
intensive buildings. While most sustainable features do not
require any further attention after the construction
completion, there are features that require continuous
effort from management and operation staff to ensure the
functionality and efficiency anticipated during the design
process.
The focus of this presentation will be on sustainable
features applicable to recreation facilities and how the
LEED scoring system is applied. A49's Kent Event Centre
(2008) in Washington, USA was the first LEED Gold
spectator facility in North America and the Activa
Sportsplex project (2008) in Kitchener, Ontario was the
first LEED Gold Recreation Centre in Canada.
Trends in Recreation Facilities
Presented By Architecture 49 The presentation will focus on new trends in recreation and
community facility design, along with examples of recently
designed facilities from across the country. Architecture49
will share the experience from the Kin Centre project
awarded the 2013 RFABC Bill Woycik Award for Outstanding
Recreational Facility and St. Catharines Meridian Centre
awarded the 2015 Brownie Award for the revitalization of a
Brownfield site from the Canadian Urban Institute.
Video Surveillance
Presented By Terracom Systems Ltd.
Avigilon has been very busy releasing several new
technologies including Access Control, Multisensor
Cameras, Improved Analytics, New HD Video Appliances.
RFP Writing and Response
Presented By Deb Leroux
RFP Response Kits' are the step that Facilities,
Municipalities, Regions, and all levels of Government are
often under-prepared to take in order to respond quickly
to RFP opportunities.
Completing bids in a professional manner, without
derailing other projects, is a critical component to
improved success in the bid process. Project Managers can
be unrealistic regarding the realities budgets, impacts on
staff and reporting [during projects and post] that have the

potential to provide exponential growth for themselves,
assuring world-class quality results on projects in British
Columbia. Through stronger bid processes, economic
viability will increase, impacting the RFABC region, and the
Province, through employment, commerce and business
vitality.
Chemistry Behind Coatings
Presented by Cloverdale Paint – Vince Smith Presenting
New Federal Government mandated & legislated, VOC
requirements of paint coatings explained. What are paint
VOC's?, why are they bad for the user, building occupant
and the environment. What advantages lower, or zero, VOC
coatings have for the user, the environment and their
performance “duty life cycle”. Green guideline options,
performance standards, substrate preparation standards,
history and industry applicability – MPI (Master Painters
Institute), GreenWise™ & LEED™ v2009 review & LEED v4
update. Review of Epoxy & Polyurethane Technologies
relevant to weathering, moderate chemical and constantly
wet exposure conditions. Discussion of New and
Innovative Coatings currently on the market (Advantages
& Disadvantages).
Concrete Deterioration in Recreation Facilities – Mechanisms
of Deterioration and Repairs
Presented by James Neill and Associates Limited - Duane
Hatch, P.Eng. Presenting
Most concrete structures in recreation facilities will likely
require some concrete repairs during the service life of the
structure. Repair programs generally address concrete
deterioration attributed to reinforcing steel corrosion due
to moisture ingress through cracks in the concrete,
possibly combined with the presence of chlorine and other
aggressive chemicals. Typical causes of concrete
deterioration will be presented. Repair methodologies and
philosophies will be discussed. Case histories illustrating
examples of concrete deterioration and repair programs
will be shown.
Public Speaking
Presented by Toastmasters – Presented by Alexa Loo and
Carolina Abramovich
The average person ranks the fear of public speaking
higher than the fear of death. The truth is, this fear could
be hurting your professional and personal life. In this
session, two seasoned Toastmasters will share tips,
techniques and exercises to conquer your fear of public
speaking.

Enhancing Minor Hockey Relationships
Presented by BC Hockey – Presented by -TBA
BC Hockey strives to “Lead, Develop and Promote Positive
Lifelong Hockey Experiences” in BC and the Yukon through
numerous programs and events. To run these successful
events, BC Hockey maintains strong, positive relationships
with Minor Hockey Associations, facilities and volunteers
who make them all possible. It is important for
Associations and facilities to have the same strong working
relationships. Their leadership in the industry has set
standards and best practices for Minor Hockey
Associations and works with them to ensure each
organization is providing the best service and
programming to their membership. Part of the best
practices BC Hockey offers is their positive parent
approach to encourage a reassuring atmosphere in and
around hockey arenas.

help understand disinfection and cleaning at a molecular
level. Studying new trends and chemical combinations that
help you keep your facility safe and clean. Understanding
how chemicals also impact floor products and whether
your new floor really needs protection anymore.
Demystifying Social Media
Jive started out as a virtual office with two champagneloving partners whose common thread was to shake-up the
PR industry. Armed only with ambitious minds, a laptop,
and cell phone they set a course to make that happen.
Years later; now a team of account managers, copywriters,
media specialists, and digital marketing strategists, known
for vivid media campaigns, sharp social media strategies,
and fluid influencer engagement tactics. Here to discuss
how to open the toolbox, talk about the different channels,
how to just start on social media, goals, which channel for
which audience.

Big Solutions for Real Pool Problems
Presented by Belzona
Guide
Municipal recreation departments typically have the most
complex staff scheduling needs out of all municipal
departments. Hear the most innovative staff scheduling
software company in today's market. Learn about some of
the software options and the benefits of building a more
effective staff scheduling system that accurately tracks
time and attendance, to enable better communication with

This session may unlock valuable and critical steps to
remediate your real pool problems. Pool water and air,
along with high bather loads eventually conspire to attack
building structures. Sooner or later, you'll need smart longlasting solutions. This session will showcase effective and
strategic solutions applied in BC swimming pools,
highlighting repair approaches that last.
