Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees
WELCOME
Welcome to the third New Jersey High School Hockey Hall
of Fame Ceremony. The sport has come a long way in the
Garden State since the formation of the North Jersey
Scholastic League in the winter of 1958 - 59. Only five teams
were involved in league competition at that time.
The Sport began to take off after the first state championship
game was held in March of 1976 at Mennen Arena, between
Brick and Chatham Township . Now there are more than 200
high school hockey teams in the state of New Jersey.
Today, recognition is given to the athletic achievements and
exceptional service of 17 individuals and two teams.
Congratulations to all of the 2014 honorees and their families.

Brandon
Some of our favorite childhood
memories involved watching you
play hockey at rinks all over the
country. The way you played was
simply breathtaking and incredibly
fun to watch! We can’t think of a
more deserving person to receive
such an amazing honor! There is
no doubt in our minds you earned
it and we could not be more
proud of you!
Love Always,

The Board of Directors of
the New Jersey High School
Ice Hockey Hall of Fame
would like to sincerely thank
the New Jersey Devils for
their sponsorship of this
event. In addition, we want
to thank the Devils for their
support of the many events
they are involved in that
have increased participation,
interest and growth of our sport throughout the State.
From the beginning the Devils organization has shown all
of us a continuing, active support of high school hockey
and community outreach programs. Their player of the
month celebration, youth nights, team nights, along with so
many other well planned activities show their commitment
to the young men and women of New Jersey.
As host and sponsor of our State High School Hockey
Championships and the related activities they organize for
that event, the Devils have created a major event that
would not be possible without their assistance and generous support. The entire hockey community is extremely
thankful for this dedication to our sport.

Born in Tumba, Sweden in August of 1977, Mats
Carseberg came to the United States with his
family in 1991. As a freshman at West Windsor/

Jersey. Carseberg set more than a dozen school, county and league records
while collecting 225 points (151 goals, 74 assists) in two seasons at West
Windsor-Plainsboro HS. He chose to transfer to Lawrenceville School,

year.
Pat was the last four sport athlete at Seton Hall; he

of the inaugural hockey squad at Seton Hall. Pat
received individual all state honors for hockey and
baseball his junior and senior years. Pat was leading
scorer for the New Jersey Interscholastic League the
first year the Prep entered the league and won the B
championship. In baseball, Pat was the team’s
batting leader in 1971 the first year Seton Hall won
the Greater Newark Championship Crown (the
State’s most prestigious tournament at the time) and
Forward
the Parochial A State Championship. Pat captained
Seton Hall Prep three teams as a senior and received the Essex

total of 104 points. He was known for his speed on the ice and field. At
home on the ice, Bobby’s coaches called him a selfless player, always
looking for his teammates first. After graduation, he played on several
semi-pro teams, but the highlight of his hockey career was an invitation
to try out for the 1976 Olympics in Lake Placid.

The Goret Family
Mike Morreale worked on enhancing the
coverage of high school hockey in the
Garden State for over 17 years as a sports
writer for The Newark Star-Ledger,
serving from 1990-91 through 2006-07.
His coverage of the state included daily
game coverage, a weekly Top 20, annual
All-Area and All-State teams, and the AllCentury Team in 2000. He covered the
sport when there was no separation of
tournaments (public/non-public) as there
is today and staffed the first state
championship series hosted by the New
Jersey Devils at Continental Airlines
Arena in East Rutherford in 1998. In
Contributor
December 2004, Morreale was honored by
the NJSIAA for his contributions to high school sports. In 2008 he earned the
Dr. John J. McMullen Award, presented by the NHL’s Devils to an
individual in support of amateur hockey throughout the state. Morreale,
married and the father of two daughters, currently serves as a staff writer for
the National Hockey League and its website, NHL.com.
Mike Morreale
Ben Leuzzi
Contributor
Ben Leuzzi has been involved in hockey for more than
60 years. One of his first experiences was in 1957 when
he helped to build an ice rink on Passaic Ave. in
Fairfield. A few months later the Willowbrook Rink
opened where Ben, at the age of 18, formed a team
called the Caldwell Jets and he was the owner, manager
and the goalie. The Jets later became part of the Garden
State League. A few years later Ben established the Golden Blades hockey
team which gave high school players a chance to play hockey year round at a
higher level and to get better competitive experience. In the 1970’s Ben
became involved at Seton Hall Prep with Coach John Warchol as a goaltender
coach. He stayed involved by being instrumental in the JV Hockey Program at
Seton Hall Prep so that players would have the opportunity to get better and
advance to the Varsity program. Ben than began coordinating the JV league
which grew to 10 teams in the Essex County area. Ben also coordinated the
Seton Hall summer clinics. Ben’s son Michael was a goalie at Seton Hall Prep
and Providence College. In 1972 Ben opened Verona Sports, where many a
young hockey player goes to purchase their equipment and have their skates
sharpened by Ben’s dad Roland Leuzzi.
Rick, a huge New York Yankees fan,
started full coverage of High School and
college hockey for The Star Ledger
Contributor
during the winter of 1978-79.
He
instituted All-State Teams, Team rankings and the Coach of the Year.
Rick had a High School and College hockey column with the paper
during the 1980’s. A sports writer since the spring of 1973, Rick came up
with the idea for the New Jersey High School Hockey Hall of Fame
during the winter of 2007-08. He formed a committee to put things in
motion for the HOF, and eventually wrote a letter to former Devils
owner Jeff Vanderbeek to get the team’s support for the HOF. Rick, a
history major at Upsala College, has interviewed a number of sports
legends over the years. In hockey that included Herb Brooks. In the
1990’s, he did PR for the Yogi Berra celebrity golf tournament, an event
which helped Scouts with Special Needs. Rick’s all time favorite sports
figure, Yankee legend Mickey Mantle, appeared at that event for a few
years. On the great 1961 club, Rick got to interview Mantle, Berra,
Whitey Ford, Ralph Terry, Johnny Blanchard, Moose Skowron, Bobby
Richardson, manager Ralph Houk and broadcasters Mel Allen and Phil
Rizzuto.
Rick Bliwise
The Gordon Cup has become
symbolic of supremacy in High
School Hockey. Every high school
student who has ever played
hockey in the North Jersey
Scholastic Hockey League has
dreamed of his team winning the
Gordon Cup. Each team that wins
can boast of having achieved the
highest level of skill. The Gordon
Cup is a reminder of how the sport
of high school hockey has grown
in the State of New Jersey from a
minor struggling athletic activity to
a major sport.
