HOOT! 2016 attendees,
This is the most exciting event in the history of the sanctuary! The support of donors and
advocates over the last eight years has helped Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest reach
a turning point at the same time that chimpanzees in captivity are at a historic moment as
biomedical testing on our closest living relatives winds down. We will be expanding the
sanctuary and welcoming more chimpanzees to the family with your help.
Past events have raised funds for general operating expenses, paying for the care of
Annie, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy, and Negra and the sanctuary’s educational and
advocacy programs.
Tonight, you again have the chance to contribute directly to all aspects of running the
sanctuary. By donating at the HOPE, LOVE, and HOME stations you will earn hearts to
personalize and add to the Heart Board during the Happy Hour. During this time you will also
be able to sample a variety of local beers, wines, and specialty drinks and bid on metal photo
prints of the chimpanzees. Don’t forget to purchase Burrito Bucks Raffle Tickets – your chance
to win $500 to spend however you like at tonight’s event.
We are honored to have special guests Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane
Society of the United States, as well as Laura Bonar, Chief Program and Policy Officer at
Animal Protection of New Mexico. Both guests will address the audience at the beginning of
the Dinner and Live Auction.
The most important and exciting part of the night is the opportunity to donate towards the
Expansion Fund during the Give a HOOT! Raise the Paddle. There are several challenges
to meet tonight, including a $50,000 matching challenge grant from the Chimpanzee
Sanctuary Fund. After paddle raising for the expansion, we’ll take a well-earned break for
sweets during the Dessert Dash.
Thank you for being here tonight and for making a difference for the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees
and the future chimpanzees who will call Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest home!

CSNW VETERINARY TEAM
There are a lot of people who do behind-the-scenes work for the chimpanzees, but the
veterinary professionals who have helped Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest since 2008
deserve special recognition.
They have literally had the lives of the chimpanzees in their hands and have taken on this
responsibility with little or no financial compensation. We have needed their expertise more
in the past eighteen months than in the previous seven years. Veterinarians, vet techs,
anesthesiologists, veterinary students, and human physicians have traveled long distances to
lead and assist in procedures. The peace of mind that comes from realizing that a chimpanzee
with a medical need is in the best hands possible is simply priceless.
We dearly miss the chimpanzees’ first veterinarian, Dr. Mel Richardson, and think of him daily
when we walk by the walkway above Young’s Hill that we named in his honor.

Laura Michalek
fundraising auctioneer
You’ve come a long way baby!
Laura turns the dial to 11 doing
what she does best, and we’re
so excited to have her for our
seventh gala event!
Fundraising Auctioneer
Laura Michalek still relies on the
endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15, she was the first female
winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running
since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks
wouldn’t expect.” Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their
mission, not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest
dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to
sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally
be part of that.” For 15 years prior to becoming a full time Fundraising Professional,
Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally-recognized vintage modern furniture
stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level have been pretty consistent
all these years, so whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a
slightly more developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago
Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole
life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again, and I still
set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”

Amanda Westbrooke
master of ceremonies
Master of Ceremonies Amanda Westbrooke
has long been inspired by the gifts of story
telling. Her Virginia childhood, filled with lessons,
colloquialisms, and the tender stories of tradition
exalted by her three Southern Aunts: Ramona,
Faye, and not least of all Winkie, have landed her
smack dab in the middle of telling stories for
purpose and progress throughout her entire life.
For the past decade, Ms. Westbrooke has served
as host of Tacoma’s City Line Television’s weekly
economic and cultural affairs program. As a natural educator, Ms. Westbrooke wafts and
weaves local tradition with urban progress. With vast experience in human resources,
as a former teacher and curriculum development specialist for First Presbyterian School,
as Director of Education & Outreach for Tacoma’s Little Theatre, and as Strategic Project
Manager for Metro Parks, Ms. Westbrooke’s virtues were not lost on those who have
either worked with her or were led by her.
Ms. Westbrooke, herself committed to peace, justice, fairness, and progress of all types,
was best shown this by her Southern Grandmother, Mary Laila Jones, who created a
cooperative garden of mixed race community members in 1966, for ALL people. "You don’t
have anything until you give it away.” was her mantra.
As a mother to grown daughter Olivia, Ms. Westbrooke would be the first to admit that
the lessons of life have only just begun to tell their story. Her love of gardening, food, films,
fashion, opera, and classical music reflects Ms. Westbrooke’s style, grace, and elegance
that comes natural to her role as your host today.

6. Negra in the Sun
This is the image that epitomizes Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest: Negra,
with her head turned upwards to feel the sun on her face and her eyes closed in
contentment. You can imagine her waiting for her moment in the sun while she
was locked inside a cage within the windowless laboratories where she spent
over 30 years before coming to the sanctuary.
This was one of the first chimpanzee paintings that artist Margaret H. Parkinson
created, after being inspired by the Negra in the Sun photo taken by Co-Director
Diana Goodrich. The print is 8 x 8 inches, printed on stretched canvas.
You have the chance to have this image in your own home—to inspire you each
day and remember what you are contributing towards with your support of the

Satisfy your sweet tooth and work with your tablemates to get your favorite item from the
Dessert Dash spread. Each table has a dessert bid card. All people at the table simply write
their bid number and the amount they would like to contribute towards the table’s dessert on
the dessert bid card. Do this as soon as you sit down at the table so you won’t forget! Auction
volunteers will collect the cards and add up the totals.
At the time of the Dessert Dash, pick your representative to DASH! Laura will announce the
table with the highest collective bid. She will continue to announce tables in decreasing order
of total bid amounts until all of the tables have had a chance to choose a dessert.
When your table is called, your table representative will grab the chalkboard heart with your
table number, dash to the dessert table, and claim the dessert of your choice for your table
by placing the chalkboard heart next to the dessert. Choose among the beautiful dessert
selections made by Brown Sugar Baking Company just for this event, each one more
tempting than the last!
Think carefully about your bid - you don’t want to miss out on your number one choice!
Each dessert serves ten or more. Every dessert is vegan.
Thanks to Brown Sugar Baking Company for all of the goodies and a
bonus dessert from Herban Feast who owns The Foundry. All desserts are
vegan and Brown Sugar Baking Company specializes in allergy-free
baking – see details on the Dessert Dash tables.

13. From Artist Cheryl Feng
I don’t remember exactly when I first heard about Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Northwest (CSNW), but the first donation I made to support CSNW was in 2010.
Since then, I’ve followed CSNW’s blog about the charming, wondrous and
intriguing seven chimpanzees. Between 2010 and 2015, I’ve gone through quite a
few major life changes that culminated in a move and a return to my life-long love
of painting. In 2015, I made a trip to see the chimps in person and though brief,
it was deeply moving. I was utterly impressed by the chimps, the staff and the
facility. I came away wanting to do more to support them.
In this series of paintings, which begins with Burrito and Jamie, I’ve tried to
express my love of the CSNW chimpanzees. I hope I conveyed the awe I have
for these particular beings and how utterly magical they are to me.
13A. Slinky Peanut Burrito
Original Watercolor Painting on Arches Paper, hand-signed by artist Cheryl Feng.
9 x 12 inches (painting), 12 x 16 inches (matted), 15 x 19 inches (framed).
This painting of Burrito is inspired by Chimp Sanctuary Northwest’s blogs. Like
you, I fell in love with videos of Burrito playing with a rainbow slinky. I especially
loved one scene where he’s holding the slinky while his foot is tap, tapping away.
Burrito also seems like quite the gourmand, so I took the liberty of giving him a
peanut in this painting. When I’ve watched him eat, he reminds me of someone
having a lot of fun at a party. The colors and shapes in this painting are reflective
of that experience.
Execution: I used three primary colors of watercolor to paint Burrito. The
watercolor was applied lightly over multiple layers. For the finishing touch, I
added a glaze of ground minerals to Burrito’s body and face and to parts of the
slinky giving this original painting aspects that are irreproducible in prints and
reproductions.

13B. Jamie’s Boot
This painting of Jamie is a colorful interpretation of a CSNW photo of Jamie
looking directly into the camera while holding a boot. I fell in love with the photo
because when I think of Jamie, I first think of her love of boots.
In this painting, I wanted to emphasize her eyes and the boot. I remember her
eyes from my visit to CSNW. Jamie stared at me. Actually she stared at one part
29
of me - my feet. I imagine she was assessing what kind of shoes (or boots) I was
wearing. It was endearing and amusing. But the main reason I emphasize her
eyes in this portrait is because her eyes transfix me, and I hope they will you too.
Execution: I used six colors of watercolor applied lightly over multiple layers
to give depth to the painting while preserving luminosity. In my color-skewed
portraits of animals, I like there to be some glow to represent the life spirit or
soul. In this painting, I wanted the boot to also look almost alive with light from
its association with Jamie. For the finishing touch, I added a glaze of ground
minerals which adds a subtle sparkle and gives this original painting something
that is irreproducible in prints and reproductions.

19. Autographed Copy of The Humane Economy
The Humane Economy: How Innovators and Enlightened Consumers Are
Transforming the Lives of Animals describes a revolution in American business
and public policy that is changing forever how we treat animals and conduct
commerce. Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the US,
31
tells the story from the frontlines, in a book that speaks to both mind and heart.
Advance praise for The Humane Economy by Dr. Jane Goodall: "The Humane
Economy is essential reading for anyone interested in animal welfare. This
fabulous book reveals the inside story of how the fight against human cruelty
to animals is gradually being won and some of the surprising individuals who
have helped to make this happen. HSUS’s Wayne Pacelle is to be congratulated
on writing a fascinating and remarkably comprehensive book, covering animal
issues ranging from factory farms to puppy mills, from trophy hunting to genetic
modification, from medical and pharmaceutical testing to entertainment. Please
help to increase awareness of ongoing animal suffering by sharing this book and
encouraging everyone to take some part in creating a truly humane society."

21. J Butter
Artisan vegan butter hand-crafted by the Sanctuary’s Co-Directors J.B. and Diana!
They began making J Butter based on a recipe found on VeganBaking.net when
they couldn’t find a commercial vegan margarine made without palm oil. The
Indonesian production of palm oil, an ingredient that is ubiquitous in food and
personal care products, is currently very destructive to the environment and
animals, including orangutans.
J Butter, it turns out, is quite delicious. It keeps in the freezer for months, which
means it can be made in large batches. A couple of batches have been made
with love specifically to bring to HOOT! to share with you as a fun way to raise
some money for our chimpanzee friends. Because who doesn’t want handcrafted vegan butter, right?
