RENOVATING AND EXPANDING A FULLY OPERATIONAL EMERGENCY AND TRAUMA CENTER FOR HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER. HackensackUMC's Emergency and Trauma Center (ETC) treats more than 111,000 patients every year, making it one of the busiest ETCs in the state of New Jersey. Gilbane is currently managing the construction of HackensackUMC's renovation and expansion project. Being conducted in five phases, the project will increase efficiency and bring state-of-the-art facilities to HackensackUMC's patients. Once complete the ETC will have more patient beds, larger patient rooms, BUILDING MORE THAN BUILDINGS® BUILDING NEW JERSEY private rooms, physician technology access in patient rooms, five trauma bays and a 12 bed cardiac pod. All work is being conducted right in the heart of the Emergency and Trauma Center. Through comprehensive planning and scheduling, each phase is chartered to ensure the ETC remains fully operational during construction. This requires continuous movement and careful choreography–building temporary spaces, relocating ETC functions while working on new spaces, moving functions into newly completed new spaces, and building temporary bypass corridors to maintain flow through the ETC. Recently, Gilbane started the second part of Phase 3, which is to relocate the ETC's waiting room. Last year, Gilbane completed Phases 1 and 2 in time for HackensackUMC to serve as the trauma center for Super Bowl XLVIII which was held at MetLife Stadium. The first two phases included work on 29 private patient rooms, Page 2 Hackensack University Medical Center Emergency and Trauma Center five trauma bays, two provider stations, a reconfigured ambulance drive, relocation of the Pediatric Emergency Department with triage bays, and private EMS. Throughout the project patients are encouraged to participate in a survey to rate construction activity and how easy it is to find their way through the ETC. Patients have provided positive feedback, saying the facilities remain clean and clear direction and signage are a huge help in navigating the active construction site within the operational Emergency and Trauma Center. High patient satisfaction and client ratings have led Gilbane to additional BUILDING MORE THAN BUILDINGS® BUILDING NEW JERSEY work within the hospital, including work on the first floor corridor, maternity area conference room renovations, replacement of the CT scan room, and facilitating emergency lobby repairs. The HackensackUMC Emergency and Trauma Center renovation and expansion project is scheduled for completion in August 2016. Project financing was arranged through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with a fast-track, 26-month construction completion schedule. As Construction Manager, Gilbane managed a six-day per week accelerated project schedule in order to meet the project's timeline. Such a tight schedule presented challenges regarding the quality of construction and installed materials. Gilbane’s veteran team of key personnel successfully implemented a Quality-in-Construction (QIC) program to address daily all aspects of the process from document review and coordination with the Architect/Engineer to final inspections and acceptance of the work. Gilbane assigned an “Inspections” Superintendent to focus on the inspection process, including scheduling and ensuring that all inspections were conducted plus securing all required approvals from the Owner, Architect/Engineer and local officials. This allowed for the timely installation of materials and construction without sacrificing the design intent. Close communication and collaboration with the trade contractors also facilitated meeting the fast-track schedule. More than 100 coordination drawings for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems installation were developed with the trade contractors, and various successful solutions were jointly developed and implemented in the field throughout the project.
