Career Path Planning –
Essentials for the Professional
Who is managing your career? Most engineers have no one but
themselves to depend on. How have you prepared yourself to
manage your career? Have you committed the education,
experience, skills development and discipline necessary to manage
your career effectively and efficiently? YOU must take control and
manage your career.
The Career Quest Institute (copyrighted) defines Career
Management as “the dedicated planning, directing, and controlling of
one’s progress through their worklife in pursuit of occupational
professions through the skillful application of professional activities,
development, opportunities, services, and accomplishments and
personal development through training and time management to
achieve the goals necessary for a successful career.
Many tools are utilized in successful career management including a
professional network and active resume package. The importance of
a professional network cannot be over emphasized. The building of
an effective network is done over a long period of time. And your
resume should be your audit of the accomplishments achieved from
the implementation of your career plan. Only YOU can make a
successful career happen.
This program will offer insight into current career management
techniques and provide benchmarking opportunities with other
professionals.

programs remaining. Our February 20th IIE-SJC
Technical Dinner Meeting was outstanding. Mr.
James R. Wilk’s Utilizing Sound Engineering
Techniques to Support Lean Initiatives
presentation was excellent and everyone
attending enjoyed the Q&A period and the
informative MAYNARD handouts. They included
a MAYNARD White Paper on Improving
Workforce Performance and Eliminating
Waste, Decoding the DNA of the Toyota
Production System, reprinted from the Harvard
Business Review and MAYNARD’S Company
Profile. If you have not been able to join us for
one of our technical dinner meeting programs this
year, you still have the opportunity to attend the
two remaining technical presentations and a great
joint plant tour of Coca-Cola with APICS.
hosts the IIE Region 2 Student Conference.
Your IIE South Jersey Senior Chapter has
donated $100 to support this program. You can
make a positive contribution to the careers of our
IIE Region 2 Student Members by being a
Technical Paper Judge or a Guest Speaker at this
Student Conference. We need volunteers now to
be Technical Paper Judges. This requires you to
be present Saturday, April 6, 2002, to listen to
the oral presentations and complete the judging.
We still need an IT speaker to make a
presentation on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 1:00
PM. The presentation slot with Q&A is 1 hour
and 15 minutes. The presentation needs to
support the conference theme, Industrial
Engineering & Information Technology:
Utilizing the Information Explosion Through
Industrial Engineering.
Last month we celebrated Engineer’s Week February 17-23, 2002. What did you do to
participate in E-Week? If you were not able to
actively participate, you still have the balance of
the year to “make something happen” in support
of your profession. “Make it so”.
We have begun planning the 2002-2003 Program
Year for the IIE South Senior Chapter No.
132. The election of Officers & Directors will be
in May 2002. The new Board of Directors will
take office on June 1, 2002 and immediately
begin planning the programs for the upcoming
year. You are encouraged to become a candidate
or participate in the nomination process as we
call for nominations this month and April 2002 in
our IIE-SJC Chapter Newsletter and from the
floor of our IIE-SJC Technical Dinner Meetings.
You possess the authority to make change. You
exercise responsibility by voting change with
your participation and support. You exercise
accountability by becoming a leader. Your
Chapter and profession need your participation
and support to seize the future.
Call Tom Masapollo today and RSVP to attend
our March 20th program, Career Path Planning
by two of our own IIE South Jersey Chapter
Directors. Mr. Ed Ball, our Chapter’s Web
Master and Mr. Kevin Drevik, Director-At-Large
will be our guest speakers. You do not want to
miss their presentation on Career Path
Planning. This subject defies consistency and is
wrought with changes no individual can keep up
with. You want to take advantage of this
program that will bring you up to date on
industrial engineering careers. Our April 17th
Technical Dinner Meeting will be a joint meeting
with APICS. Mr. Gerry Najerian is our guest
speaker on Supply Chain Management. These
two meetings are being held at the QUALITY INN
where you will enjoy excellent facilities, great
food and good company.

The IIE South Jersey Senior Chapter Employment Assistance Network suffered a
setback in February when the coordinator’s personal computer suffered a major
crash. Unfortunately, the address book containing the mailing list was lost. We
think that we have recovered most of the list. However, the existing list may
contain names of members who wished to be dropped, and may NOT contain
some members who wish to receive the notifications (both Type I and Type II
errors.) Therefore, we are asking anyone who wishes to receive Email
notifications of position openings to contact the coordinator at the following
Email address to make sure your name is on the list.
[email protected]
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
For anyone who is unfamiliar with the Employment Assistance Network, this is
how it works. The coordinator maintains a mailing list of individuals who wish
to hear about openings in Industrial Engineering and related fields in the area
(and sometimes outside the area). When we hear about an open position, we
Email information about the position to everyone on the mailing list. If any
individual member has interest in the position, they contact the source directly.
This way, the names on the list are kept confidential. We do not attempt to do
any matching or screening and we steadfastly refuse to pass out the list of names
to headhunters.
We also ask ALL members who may know about an opening to help your fellow
IIE Members by sending the information along to the above address. We
maintain contact with other IIE Senior & Student Chapters to capitalize on
information that they may have as well.
Since the recession hit full swing in October, we have noticed a significant
decline in openings being publicized. It has actually been several months since
the last opening we were made aware of.

attention to a critical few items, and avoiding
unproductive distractions. This means focusing
on weak links and the root causes that
perpetuate them. Identifying weak links is
usually pretty easy. It’s rooting out their causes
that take a bit of thinking. This column
suggests a bit of a how-to for this effort.
There is one thing, however, that characterizes many
tough issues. They can be defined most clearly by the
conflicts or dilemmas that they put us into. If you have
difficulty extricating yourself from such a tough spot,
make a list the major symptoms related to it that you
would like to be free of. Then define each of these
symptoms in terms of the dilemma of conflict they put you
in.
At this point, you could attack each symptom by delving
deeper into why its individual dilemma seems
insurmountable. Tools like the classic “Five Whys” or,
even better, the structured TOC thinking process known
as the conflict diagram (or cloud) can help this analysis.
But the different symptomatic solutions may not play well
together and lead to new conflicts, or there may be some
deeper core conflict that, if missed, will re-infect the
locally improved system.
So before attacking the individual dilemmas, step back a
bit and look at them together. The various objectives, the
requirements needed by the objectives, and conflicting
approaches to satisfy the requirements will usually have
some similarity associated with them. (Again, the
common structure of the TOC conflict cloud is handy
here.) If there are commonalities among the conflicts,
maybe there is a common core conflict that can
encompass them all.
Identify that core conflict and attack its perpetuating
assumptions; then use its solution to align the solutions
for the symptoms into a coherent strategy.
Like I said, keep it simple -- by focusing on the real root
causes, i.e., the assumptions that perpetuate the core
conflict and drive erroneous responses throughout the
system in question.
What are your real conflicts? Think about it.
Contest. Mr. Bruce Bishop, IIE
South Jersey Senior Chapter
Director has volunteered to be one
of the three Technical Paper Judges.
We need two more volunteers to
complete the judging panel.
TECHNICAL PAPER JUDGE
The Technical Paper Judge commitment only
requires you to be in attendance on Saturday,
April 6, 2002. The oral presentations begin at
2:45 PM Saturday afternoon in GITC 1400,
NJIT, Newark, New Jersey. Technical Paper
Judges are guest of the Region 2 Conference and
can attend the entire program, starting with the
Ice Breaker Friday evening.
The technical papers that reach this competition
level are always excellent and on the cutting edge
of the industrial engineering profession. As a
judge, you will receive the papers one week prior
to the Region 2 Student Conference to permit
reading and judging of the written portion of the
contest. Truly, the oral presentations with
graphical aids are the highlight of the contest and
the final judging area. Upon the conclusion of the
oral presentations, the judges must complete the
judging in private. The winners will be announced
at the Awards Banquet that evening at 7:45 PM
at Seabras Rodizio, Newark City, New Jersey.
Please volunteer your services and make a
difference. Call Bob Siebeneicher at 609-3521975 or Email at [email protected] to
become an IIE-NJIT Region 2 Student
Conference Technical Paper Judge by March 20,
2002. The judges can carpool and share the day,
with the South Jersey Chapter picking up the
expenses.

AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR QUALITY
PRINCETON SECTION
SPECIAL WORKSHOP - MARCH 28 : 8 AM - 5 PM
WHAT IS THE THEORY OF CONSTRAINTS (TOC)
AND WHAT CAN IT DO FOR MY
ORGANIZATION?
For organizations that want to improve their
operations relative to their current state and/or to
their competition, the Theory of Constraints (TOC)
provides clear guidance to quickly identify
constraints and leverage capabilities, resulting in
breakthroughs to significant new levels of
performance.
QUIZ ANSWER
How many? 3?
Wrong, there are 6!! - - No Joke.
Read it again.
Common views of performance improvement tend to
focus primarily on short term cost reduction or on
incremental refinements of current practices.
Replacing such limiting views with a shift of mindset
and management focus to the goal of sustainable
growth of throughput, TOC-based initiatives provide
organizations with real and rapid current results as
well as a clear roadmap to future success.
The reasoning behind it is ……..
The brain cannot process "OF".
Incredible or what?
Anyone who counts all 6 "F's" on the first go
is a genius. (Maybe.)
Three is normal; four is quite rare.

“I feel that the most important reason for IIE membership is often
overlooked during our value assessment. The important reason is
simply the survival of industrial engineering as a recognized and
respected engineering discipline by such groups as ABET. We, as
industrial engineers, need to have a sense of responsibility to our
profession and its continued growth. Being an active member of IIE
is one way we can assure the future for industrial engineering.”
