your ticket stub(s) or we will not register you. Address labels for your tickets are very helpful too! If you need to cancel a trip or
event after you have signed up, we will do everything we can to refund the cost (minus a $3.00 cancellation fee) by either selling

Michigan’s First State Prison, once the world’s largest
walled prison, is now Armory Arts Village, a resident artists’ community
listed on MSN in the top ten most unique buildings in the world in
which to live. The 25 foot stone and granite wall with guard turrets
surround it. See how this old brick and mortar building has gone from
historic prison to artistic vision. Then, board a bus to fully intact Sevenblock (1934-2007), on the closed area of the Southern Michigan State
Prison. This is where inmates went from the First Prison when it
closed in 1934.
Robert DeNiro filmed the movie “Stone” at Seven-Block.
See how and where prisoners first entering were placed in the holding
cell, given their uniforms, haircuts, numbers and sent to the cells.
Hear stories of lively and famous convicts, wardens, officers, a daring
helicopter escape, Seven-Block’s role during the Detroit riots and
prison reforms.
We will enjoy lunch at the Old Prison Cafe. (No bread or water
here.) Choices include: #1- (The Snitch) Chicken Salad on Croissant,
#2- (The Burglar’s Beef) Bistro Roast Beef on Kaiser Bun or #3- (The
Parolee) Veggie on Homemade Pita. Lunch includes creamy tomato

This 2004 off-Broadway rags-to-riches tale about three young men
who leave their homes in Philadelphia, Detroit and Memphis to seek
fame and fortune at New York’s Apollo Theatre, features the greatest
hits of the Motown era and examines the difference between the
Detroit/Chicago, as well as the Philly and Memphis sound. The show
was “re-launched” in NYC in 2011.

The Green Garage is actually three things: a building located in
the Midtown area of Detroit, a business enterprise and a community
of people dedicated to Detroit’s sustainable future. The building
dates back to 1920, when it was a showroom for Model T-based
automobiles, and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It
was purchased in 2008 by Tom and Peggy Brennan, who, with a
wonderful community of over 200 individuals, have developed plans
for a green, historic renovation. Their principal business focus is
helping start-up triple bottom line businesses grow naturally. They
opened in the fall of 2011.
We’ll enjoy a boxed lunch and listen to a talk about the
development of the Green Garage. For those who are interested, you
will be able to take a short tour to see & learn about the renovation.
Following our tour we will be able to visit a few shops around the
corner along with the Avalon bakery to buy some goodies for home.

Madison Heights Senior Center will host a health
screening on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 9 am through 4:30 pm.
On that day, Life Line Screening will scan the carotid artery in the
neck for plaque build-up, which can lead to stroke, (75% of all
strokes are linked to carotid artery blockage) and the arteries in the
legs for peripheral arterial disease, which is linked to heart disease.
They will also offer a test for aneurysms in the aortic vessel in the
abdomen, a bone density screening to test for osteoporosis, and a
fifth test for atrial fibrillation, which is the most common type of heart
arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat. This is a prevention program, and
with early detection, these problems can be treated. The results are
sent directly to you in about 21 days. These tests which are
noninvasive, completely painless and take about ten minutes each,
are offered for $45 each. Receive discounts when you sign up for the
Stroke/Wellness Package- $139- SAVE $60. Pre-registration is a

2012 Golf League
The 2012 Golf League will begin
Tuesday, May 1 and runs for 16 weeks
through August 14. Men play at Sunnybrook in Sterling Heights. Cost
there is $8.75 per week. If you don’t play, you don’t have to pay.
Women play at Red Oaks in Madison Heights. You will need
to pay for the entire 16 week season. Cost there is $160 paid in full at
the Senior Center by April 13.
A separate deposit of $32 is due by April 13 at the Senior
Center for all golfers and is used for golf trophies and prizes at the
end of the season.
Schedules, league format and golf rules will be sent to all
golfers two weeks prior to play.

commitments through Earth Day. What can you do for Earth Day?
Please join us to help clean up Civic Center Park on 13 Mile Road.
We will have the necessary equipment- you just need to bring a pair
of garden gloves and meet at the Center at 10 am. We will work as a
team and give this wonderful park a good spring cleaning. Following
clean up we will provide pizza and beverages for all volunteers. You
are invited to bring children or grandchildren to join in to help us
clean up Civic Center Park for Earth Day.
For thos who cannot help with clean up (or even if you do
help) we will be selling Earth Day pledges for $1.00 each. You will be
able to write your environmental pledge (“I will turn off the water
when brushing my teeth” et cetera) on a cutout leaf which will be
added to a Humanitree trunk poster. Let’s fill up our tree with lots of
leaves so that we can leave “Mother Earth” as beautiful as when we

This four-week class will focus on exercises specially developed for
seniors from the popular art form of Tai Chi. Tai Chi is well known as
a gentle form of exercise that helps to improve circulation, balance &
joint mobility. Exercises will be done standing and sitting in a chair.

Quilting Group
Join us for weekly quilting sessions on

is unstructured, meaning you can bring

Our loan closet contains wheelchairs,

SHARP – Madison Heights has a
program to help seniors, those that are physically
challenged and deployed servicemen and
women in Madison Heights with home maintenance. The
program is co-sponsored through the North Woodward
Community Foundation (of Troy).
Volunteers perform chores such as plumbing, electrical
work, clean up and removal of debris, changing batteries in
smoke detectors, simple carpentry tasks and other similar jobs
that help seniors keep their homes safe and livable.
Seniors pay only for the materials, not the labor. If you or
someone you know is interested in receiving assistance, or if you
need more information, you can pick up an application at the
Senior Center or call 248.545.3464.
The SHARP program is also looking for volunteers to
perform work at seniors’ homes. If you are able to help, please
call the Center at 248.545.3464.
Have you Heard About the Yard Services Program?
The Madison Heights Yard Services Program
provides free lawn care and snow removal services
for eligible senior citizens and disabled residents.
Recipients receive up to sixteen grass cuts and four
snow removals per year.
In order to qualify for the program, all participants must complete a
new application and income verification every year, be at least
55 years of age or disabled as defined by the Social Security Act
(receiving SSI or SSD) and also occupy the home. If a non-senior/
non-disabled individual lives in the home, applicants will not qualify
for the program. In addition, we need written proof of the total gross
annual income of all persons living in the house over 18 years of age,
and a list of all persons residing in the household regardless of age.

Cleaners!
The basic supplies you’ll need include:
·Distilled white vinegar
·Baking soda
·Olive oil
·Borax (sold in a box in the laundry aisle)
·Liquid castile soap (found in most natural foods stores)
·Essential oils (also found in most natural food stores)
·Microfiber cleaning cloths
·Newspaper
Basic “recipes” and techniques to get you started:
·Glass: Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle.
Spray on glass and wipe clean with old newspaper or a lint-free cloth.
·Countertops and bathroom tile: Mix 2 parts vinegar and 1 part
baking soda with 4 parts water. Apply with a sponge, scour, and wipe
away.
·Floors: Mix 4 cups of white distilled vinegar with about a gallon of
hot water. If desired, add a few drops of pure peppermint or lemon oil
for a pleasant scent. After damp mopping the floors, the smell of
vinegar will dissipate quickly, leaving behind only the scent of the oil.
·Wood furniture: Mix equal parts of lemon juice and olive oil. Apply a
small amount to a cloth, and rub onto the furniture in long, even
strokes.
·Toilet bowl cleaner: Sprinkle a toilet brush with baking soda and
scrub away! Occasionally disinfect your toilet by scrubbing with borax
instead. Wipe the outside of the toilet clean with straight vinegar.
·Disinfectant: Mix 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons vinegar, 3 cups
hot water, and 1/4 teaspoon liquid castile soap. Wipe on with
dampened cloth or use a spray bottle. Wipe clean.
·Mold and mildew: Wipe with straight vinegar.
·Air freshener: Sprinkle essential oil on a cotton ball, and stash it in
a corner of the room. If you have kids, make sure it is out of their reach
as essential oils are very strong and could irritate their skin. Lavender
is a relaxing scent that is great for bedrooms, and cinnamon, clove,
and citrus oils are great for the rest of the house. You can stash a few
in the car too—try peppermint, which may help you to stay alert.
