The birth of classic cuisine in India can be attributed largely
to necessity. As early civilizations sought ways to preserve their food,
they discovered a large family of ingredients that would not only
preserve food but would also promote good health. Blending amazing
spices became an art form over time. Achieving the perfect proportion
of spices that are flavorful but not hot, is absolutely vital to the creation
of authentic, delicious Indian dishes.
Your luncheon includes a buffet featuring appetizers,
vegetable entrees, meat entrees, soup, rice, dessert and beverage.
Following our lunch we will take a tour of the Oakland Pet
Adoption Center. There we will meet the staff and animals and hear
of the many pleasures and benefits of animal adoption. Refreshments
will be served.

Seven small, emotionally powerful portraits of Jesus by
Rembrandt and his students are displayed together for the first time in
this exhibition of 64 intimate works. See how Rembrandt broke from
the convention of showing Jesus as a divine, perfect figure by
portraying him as a compassionate, complex human being.

Tips for a Happy and Healthy New Year!
Dreams of finding an old car in a barn are a daily reality here! The
Gilmore Car Museum has been named one of the top five museums
in the nation. This unique museum features over 200 antique,
classic and collector cars on display. It began in 1963 as a hobby of
Donald S. Gilmore. The Gilmore’s established a non-profit
foundation and then opened the museum to the public for the first
time in 1966. After we tour the museum, we have a delectable lunch
included at Schuler’s, a Michigan gem since the 1930s.

Leoncavallo’s beloved play within a play. 1860‘s Italy sets the stage
as a theater troupe led by Canio and his actress wife Nedda arrives
in town. When Canio begins to suspect the real reason his wife’s
performance as an adultress is so convincing, their comedic
production takes a sinister turn.

“Ernie” is set on Harwell’s last night at Comerica Park in
September of 2009, prior to his moving thank you speech to his
adopted and beloved city of Detroit. Just before he walks onto the

about him, coaxing Harwell into giving one final broadcast- the
“broadcast of his life”.

End Senior Hunger
There are over 6 million seniors
threatened by hunger in our country according to Meals on Wheels
Association of America. And the problem is growing. The New York
Times reported that the price of food increased 3.9% in February
alone, the biggest jump in a one-month span since 1974.
For seniors, this could mean making a choice between
spending money on food or paying for other necessities. And even if
an older adult has the resources to purchase food, finding
transportation to get to the grocery store or not having the functional
ability to prepare meals independently can lead to malnourishment.
Older and disabled adults can get help through a number of
federal and state-supported programs, which can often be used
together. For more information on any of these programs, contact the
Area Agency on Aging, 1-B at 1.800.852.7795. Michigan’s
Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly (MiCAFE) is also
available to help you understand what benefits are available and help
you apply. Call MiCAFE at 1.877.664.2233 or visit
www.elderlawofmi.org/micafe.
The SNAP Program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program), formerly known as food stamps, estimates that only 30% of
qualified seniors take advantage of the program due to either a
perceived stigma or difficulty getting to the government office or
store. Recipients receive a “Bridge Card” that looks and works like a
debit card and is used to purchase approved grocery items at
participating stores.
Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)
provides qualified older adults with Michigan-grown products from
authorized farmers markets and roadside stands throughout
Michigan. Recipients receive coupons that can be redeemed for
food at participating markets and stands. It’s important to know that
many farmers markets now accept Bridge Cards as well.
Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is for
those 60+. It supplies nutritious USDA foods distributed to older
adults through public and non-profit private local agencies. Call
517.373.4336.
Meals on Wheels and congregate dining programs are
designed to make sure those over 60 have access to nutritious food.
It differs from other programs because eligibility is not based on
income, but rather the recipient’s ability to prepare their own meals
or get out to the grocery store. The program delivers food right to the
doors of seniors who are homebound, while seniors who are able to
get out are invited to dine at sites in the community, usually in senior
centers. Oakland County Mobile Meals (OCMM) is located in our
center. For more information, contact them at 248.398.0990.
Local, Non-Profit Food Programs help older or disabled
adults throughout the six-county region. These programs often
receive food from federally funded USDA food programs in addition
to receiving money or food donations from the local community. Call
the AAA 1-B at 1.800.852.7795 to see what’s available in your area.
You can help too! Donations are always needed. Several
agencies hold food drives throughout the year. Drop off extra food
when you can. OCMM always needs help. Volunteer to package food
or deliver meals to seniors. Monetary donations are also accepted.

The Senior Companion Program
The Senior Companion Program is a national
volunteer program that enables people 55 years of age
and over to stay active and healthy through participation
in much needed community services. Senior
Companion volunteers provide non-medical support to
adults (21 years of age and over) with Alzheimer’s disease, chronic
mental illness, developmental disabilities, as well as the physically
frail and homebound. They provide clients with friendship and
companionship, support and encouragement, assistance with daily
tasks and assistance with errands and appointments. Senior
Companions are required to serve 20 hours per week either in a
client’s home or in a community setting.
Senior Companions receive an hourly non-taxable
stipend, which is guaranteed to not affect rent, taxes or any public
assistance. Volunteers also receive reimbursement for
transportation, a meal or meal reimbursement each service day,
annual physical exams, as well as socialization, training and formal
recognition events.

One Person at a Time
Baby It’s Cold Outside!
As the seasons change and your family migrates indoors for the
winter, a lot of energy can be wasted to keep your family and your
home comfortable. Between 40 and 70% of all home energy is
wasted, but we could save about half of that by buying efficient
appliances and taking energy-saving measures.
Here are Some Inexpensive Solutions to Consider
Cover your air conditioner: If you can’t remove your window unit,
consider covering it both inside and out.
Caulk it: Small spaces and gaps around windows and pipes and
wires entering the home create energy wasting drafts that can cut the
efficiency of your heating system.
Block drafts: Draft blockers are foam plates that fit behind light
switches and electrical outlets to reduce drafts that enter through
those spaces. You can get a packet of 10 for about $3 and they’re
easy to install with just a screwdriver.
Upgrade your thermostat: Changing your thermostat to a
programmable one allows you to control the temperature in your
home at different times of the day without you being home. Keep the
heat off when you’re out of the house and set it to turn back up before
you get home which can save 12% or more on your energy bill.
Perform regular maintenance. If you have a forced air furnace,
make sure to clean or change the furnace filter about once a month.
Most furnaces will need to be professionally cleaned and tuned once
a year.
Reflective Window Film: Place these thin, plastic sheets directly on
the inside of window panes and glass doors. The film reflects inside
heat back into your home, reducing the amount that is conducted
outside through windows. The film costs about $10 a window and is
easy to put on — it adheres to the window directly, or with the help of
water from a spray bottle.
Storm Window Kits: It can be expensive to have storm windows
installed throughout your house, but there is a less-expensive way to
weatherproof home windows. Storm window kits consist of plastic film
or sheets to cover the window. Attaching the plastic is done with tape
or tacks. Prices range from about $3 to $10 per window.
Weatherstripping: Create a tight seal around all your windows to
reduce heated and cooled air from escaping outside. Weatherstrips
are plastic, foam, felt or rubber strips that fit around window and door
frames with a self-adhesive backing. Prices vary, but average about
$5 per window or door
